²⁴ When her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb. ²⁵ The first came out reddish all over like a hairy garment; and they named him Esau (hairy). ²⁶ Afterward his brother came out, and his hand grasped Esau’s heel, so he was named Jacob (^[a]one who grabs by the heel, supplanter). Isaac was sixty years old when Rebekah gave birth to them.

⁴ To Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau, and to Esau I gave [the hill country of] Mount Seir to possess; but Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt.

³⁴ Abraham became the father of Isaac. The sons of Isaac: Esau and Israel (Jacob).

⁸ And God gave Abraham a covenant [a formal agreement to be strictly observed] of [which] circumcision [was the sign]; and so [under these circumstances] Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day; and Isaac [became the father] of ^[a]Jacob, and Jacob [became the father] of the ^[b]twelve patriarchs.^(A)
