Nag-asawa si Isaac

24 Matandang-matanda na noon si Abraham, at pinagpapalang mabuti ni Yahweh. Sinabi niya sa pinakamatanda niyang alipin na kanyang katiwala, “Ilagay mo ang iyong kamay sa pagitan ng aking mga hita at manumpa ka. Sumumpa ka sa akin sa pangalan ni Yahweh, ang Diyos ng langit at ng lupa, na hindi ka rito sa Canaan pipili ng mapapangasawa ng aking anak na si Isaac. Pumunta ka sa bayan kong tinubuan, at pumili ka sa aking mga kamag-anak doon ng mapapangasawa niya.”

“Kung ayaw pong sumama ng mapipili ko, maaari po bang si Isaac na ang papuntahin doon?” tanong ng alipin.

“Aba, hindi! Huwag mong papupuntahin doon si Isaac,” tugon ni Abraham. “Nilisan ko ang tahanan ng aking ama at iniwan ang lupain ng aking mga kamag-anak sapagkat dito ako pinapunta ni Yahweh, ang Diyos ng kalangitan. Nangako siyang ibibigay ang lupaing ito sa aking lahi. Magsusugo siya ng kanyang anghel na mauuna sa iyo upang tulungan ka sa pagpili ng mapapangasawa ng aking anak. Ngayon, kung ayaw sumama ng mapipili mo, wala ka nang pananagutan sa akin. Ngunit huwag mong papuntahin doon ang anak ko!” Kaya't inilagay ng alipin ang kanyang kamay sa pagitan ng hita ng panginoon niyang si Abraham, at nanumpang susundin ito.

10 Naghanda ang alipin ng sampung kamelyo ng kanyang panginoon. Matapos kargahan ng maraming panregalo, naglakbay siya patungong Mesopotamia, sa lunsod na tinitirhan ni Nahor. 11 Pagsapit sa labas ng lunsod, huminto siya at pinaluhod ang mga kamelyo sa tabi ng balon ng tubig na naroon. Sa gayong oras, tuwing magdarapit-hapon, dumarating ang mga babae para umigib. 12 Siya'y nanalangin nang ganito: “Yahweh, Diyos ng panginoon kong si Abraham, maging matagumpay nawa ang aking lakad; tuparin po ninyo ang inyong pangako sa aking panginoong si Abraham. 13-14 Tatayo po ako rito sa tabi ng balon at hihintayin ang pagdating ng mga babae buhat sa lunsod, para umigib. Ako po'y makikiinom sa isa sa kanila. Kapag sinabi niyang, ‘Uminom ka, at paiinumin ko rin ang iyong mga kamelyo,’ iyon na sana ang babaing inihanda ninyo para sa inyong aliping si Isaac. Sa gayon malalaman kong tinupad na ninyo ang inyong pangako sa aking panginoon.”

15 Hindi pa natatapos ang kanyang panalangin, dumating si Rebeca na may pasan na banga ng tubig. Siya ay anak ni Bethuel at apo ni Milca na asawa ni Nahor na kapatid ni Abraham. 16 Siya'y dalaga pa at napakaganda. Lumusong siya sa kinaroroonan ng balon, pinuno ang kanyang banga, at umahon. 17 Sumalubong agad ang alipin at sinabi, “Maaari bang makiinom?”

18 “Aba, opo,” sagot ng babae. At inalalayan niya ang banga habang umiinom ang alipin. 19 Nang ito'y makainom na ay sinabi pa ng dalaga, “Paiinumin ko na rin po ang inyong mga kamelyo hanggang gusto nila.” 20 Isinalin niya sa painuman ang laman ng banga at pabalik-balik siyang sumalok hanggang sa mapainom ang lahat ng kamelyo. 21 Tahimik na pinagmasdan ng alipin ang dalaga at iniisip kung iyon na kaya ang sagot ni Yahweh sa kanyang panalangin.

22 Matapos makainom ang mga kamelyo, inilabas ng alipin ang dala niyang mamahaling singsing[a] at dalawang pulseras na pawang lantay na ginto, at ibinigay sa dalaga. 23 Pagkatapos, ito'y tinanong niya, “Sino ba ang iyong mga magulang? Maaari ba kaming makituloy sa inyo ngayong gabi?”

24 Sumagot ang babae, “Ako po'y anak ni Bethuel na anak nina Nahor at Milca. 25 Maluwag po sa amin at maraming pagkain para sa inyong mga hayop.”

26 Pagkarinig niyon, lumuhod ang alipin at sumamba kay Yahweh, 27 “Purihin si Yahweh, ang Diyos ng panginoon kong si Abraham! Hindi siya sumira sa kanyang pangako. Pinatnubayan niya ako sa pagpunta sa bahay ng mga kamag-anak ng aking panginoon.”

28 Nagmamadaling umuwi ang dalaga at isinalaysay ang buong pangyayari sa tahanan ng kanyang ina. 29 Si Rebeca ay may kapatid na lalaki na ang pangalan ay Laban. Patakbo siyang pumunta sa balong kinaroroonan ng lalaki 30 nang marinig niya ang salaysay ng kanyang kapatid, at makita ang singsing[b] at ang mga pulseras na suot nito. Nakita nga niya ang tao sa tabi ng balon, pati ang kanyang mga kamelyo. 31 Sinabi ni Laban, “Bakit nandiyan po kayo sa labas? Tayo na po sa amin, lalaking pinagpala ni Yahweh! Nakahanda na po ang pagpapahingahan ninyo at ang sisilungan ng inyong mga kamelyo.”

32 Sumama nga ang alipin. Pagdating sa bahay, ibinabâ ni Laban ang karga ng mga kamelyo at pinakain ang mga hayop. Ang alipin nama'y binigyan niya ng tubig upang maghugas ng paa pati ang mga kasama nito. 33 Binigyan siya ng pagkain, ngunit sinabi ng alipin, “Sasabihin ko muna ang aking pakay bago ako kumain.”

“Sige, sabihin ninyo,” sabi ni Laban.

34 Ganito ang salaysay niya: “Ako po'y alipin ni Abraham. 35 Pinagpala ni Yahweh ang aking panginoon. Pinarami ang kanyang mga kawan ng tupa, kambing at baka. Pinagkalooban rin siya ng maraming pilak at ginto, mga aliping babae at lalaki, mga kamelyo at asno. 36 Ang asawa niyang si Sara ay nagkaanak pa kahit siya'y matanda na. Ang anak na ito ang tanging tagapagmana ng kanilang kayamanan. 37 Ako po'y pinanumpa ng panginoon kong si Abraham na hindi ako kukuha sa Canaan ng mapapangasawa ng anak niyang ito. 38 Dito po niya ako pinapunta sa mga kamag-anak ng kanyang mga magulang upang ihanap ng mapapangasawa ang kanyang anak. 39 Tinanong ko po siya ng ganito: ‘Kung ang babaing mapili ko ay hindi sumama sa akin, ano po naman ang aking gagawin?’ 40 Ang sagot po niya'y sasamahan ako ng anghel ni Yahweh upang magtagumpay sa aking lakad. Dito raw sa angkan ng kanyang ama ako kumuha ng mapapangasawa ng kanyang anak. Iyan po ang utos sa akin. 41 Ang sabi pa niya sa akin, ‘Kung sundin mo ito, natupad mo na ang iyong tungkulin. Kung tanggihan ka naman ng aking mga kamag-anak, wala ka nang pananagutan sa akin.’

42 “Pagdating ko po sa may balon kanina, ako'y nanalangin nang ganito: ‘O Yahweh, Diyos ng panginoon kong si Abraham, panagumpayin mo ang aking gagawin! 43 Tatayo po ako sa may tabi ng balong ito at kapag may dumating na dalaga upang umigib, ako'y makikiinom. 44 Kapag ako'y pinainom pati ang aking mga kamelyo, iyon na po sana ang pinili ninyo upang mapangasawa ng anak ng aking panginoon.’ 45 Hindi pa natatapos ang aking panalangin, dumating nga si Rebeca na pasan ang isang banga. Lumusong siya sa bukal at sumalok ng tubig. Nakiusap po ako sa kanyang ako'y painumin. 46 At hindi lamang ako ang pinainom, pati po ang aking mga kamelyo. 47 Tinanong ko po siya, ‘Kanino kang anak?’ Ang sagot po'y, ‘Kay Bethuel na anak ng mag-asawang Nahor at Milca.’ Kaya't kinabitan ko siya ng hikaw sa ilong at sinuotan ng mga pulseras sa braso. 48 Pagkatapos, ako'y lumuhod at sumamba kay Yahweh, sa Diyos ng panginoon kong si Abraham, sapagkat pinatnubayan niya ako at inihatid sa tahanang ito. At dito ko nga natagpuan ang dalagang dapat mapangasawa ng kanyang anak. 49 Kaya hinihiling kong sabihin ninyo sa akin kung sang-ayon kayo sa hangad ng aking panginoon. Kung hindi naman, sabihin din ninyo at nang malaman ko naman kung ano ang aking gagawin.”

50 Sumagot ang mag-amang Bethuel at Laban, “Dahil ang bagay na ito'y mula kay Yahweh, wala na kaming masasabing anuman. 51 Isama mo si Rebeca pag-uwi mo upang mapangasawa ng anak ng iyong panginoon, ayon sa sinabi ni Yahweh.” 52 Pagkarinig nito, ang alipin ni Abraham ay muling nagpatirapa at nagpuri kay Yahweh. 53 At inilabas niya ang mga damit at mga hiyas na ginto't pilak para kay Rebeca. Binigyan din niya ng mamahaling regalo ang kapatid nitong si Laban at ang kanilang ina.

54 Pagkatapos, ang alipin at ang mga kasama nito ay kumain na at uminom, at doon na nga nagpalipas ng gabi. Kinabukasa'y nagpaalam na siya. 55 Ngunit hiniling ng ina at ng kapatid ni Rebeca na magpalipas muna ng isang linggo o sampung araw bago umalis.

56 Ngunit sinabi ng alipin, “Sapagkat pinagtagumpay ako ni Yahweh sa aking lakad, pahintulutan na po ninyo akong magbalik sa aking panginoon.”

57 “Kung gayon,” sabi nila, “tawagin natin si Rebeca at tanungin kung ano ang kanyang pasya.” 58 “Sasama ka na ba sa taong ito?” tanong nila.

“Opo,” tugon niya. 59 Kaya si Rebeca at ang kanyang yaya ay pinahintulutan nilang sumama sa alipin ni Abraham at sa mga kasama nito, 60 matapos basbasan nang ganito:

“Ikaw nawa, O Rebeca ay maging ina ng marami,
at sa lunsod ng kaaway, ang iyong lahi ang magwagi.”

61 Nang handa na ang lahat, si Rebeca at ang mga utusan niyang babae ay sumakay sa kamelyo, at umalis kasunod ng alipin ni Abraham.

62 Nang panahong iyon, si Isaac ay naninirahan sa lupain ng Negeb. Minsan, napadako siya sa ilang ng Beer-lahai-roi. 63 Nang magtatakipsilim, siya'y namasyal sa kaparangan at nakita niyang may dumarating na mga kamelyo. 64 Natanaw ni Rebeca si Isaac kaya't bumabâ siya sa sinasakyang kamelyo, 65 lumapit sa aliping sumundo sa kanya at nagtanong, “Sino ang lalaking iyan na papalapit sa atin?”

“Siya po ang aking panginoon,” sagot nito. Kumuha ng belo si Rebeca at tinakpan ang kanyang mukha.

66 Isinalaysay ng alipin kay Isaac ang mga ginawa niya. 67 Pagkatapos, dinala ni Isaac si Rebeca sa tolda ni Sara na kanyang ina at ito'y naging asawa niya. Minahal ni Isaac si Rebeca at siyang naging kaaliwan niya sa pagkamatay ng kanyang ina.

24 And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: and the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things.

And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh:

And I will make thee swear by the Lord, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell:

But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac.

And the servant said unto him, Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land: must I needs bring thy son again unto the land from whence thou camest?

And Abraham said unto him, Beware thou that thou bring not my son thither again.

The Lord God of heaven, which took me from my father's house, and from the land of my kindred, and which spake unto me, and that sware unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from thence.

And if the woman will not be willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be clear from this my oath: only bring not my son thither again.

And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and sware to him concerning that matter.

10 And the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master, and departed; for all the goods of his master were in his hand: and he arose, and went to Mesopotamia, unto the city of Nahor.

11 And he made his camels to kneel down without the city by a well of water at the time of the evening, even the time that women go out to draw water.

12 And he said O Lord God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham.

13 Behold, I stand here by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water:

14 And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master.

15 And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder.

16 And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up.

17 And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher.

18 And she said, Drink, my lord: and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink.

19 And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also, until they have done drinking.

20 And she hasted, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again unto the well to draw water, and drew for all his camels.

21 And the man wondering at her held his peace, to wit whether the Lord had made his journey prosperous or not.

22 And it came to pass, as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a golden earring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold;

23 And said, Whose daughter art thou? tell me, I pray thee: is there room in thy father's house for us to lodge in?

24 And she said unto him, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, which she bare unto Nahor.

25 She said moreover unto him, We have both straw and provender enough, and room to lodge in.

26 And the man bowed down his head, and worshipped the Lord.

27 And he said, Blessed be the Lord God of my master Abraham, who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, the Lord led me to the house of my master's brethren.

28 And the damsel ran, and told them of her mother's house these things.

29 And Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban: and Laban ran out unto the man, unto the well.

30 And it came to pass, when he saw the earring and bracelets upon his sister's hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, Thus spake the man unto me; that he came unto the man; and, behold, he stood by the camels at the well.

31 And he said, Come in, thou blessed of the Lord; wherefore standest thou without? for I have prepared the house, and room for the camels.

32 And the man came into the house: and he ungirded his camels, and gave straw and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet, and the men's feet that were with him.

33 And there was set meat before him to eat: but he said, I will not eat, until I have told mine errand. And he said, Speak on.

34 And he said, I am Abraham's servant.

35 And the Lord hath blessed my master greatly; and he is become great: and he hath given him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, and menservants, and maidservants, and camels, and asses.

36 And Sarah my master's wife bare a son to my master when she was old: and unto him hath he given all that he hath.

37 And my master made me swear, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell:

38 But thou shalt go unto my father's house, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son.

39 And I said unto my master, Peradventure the woman will not follow me.

40 And he said unto me, The Lord, before whom I walk, will send his angel with thee, and prosper thy way; and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my kindred, and of my father's house:

41 Then shalt thou be clear from this my oath, when thou comest to my kindred; and if they give not thee one, thou shalt be clear from my oath.

42 And I came this day unto the well, and said, O Lord God of my master Abraham, if now thou do prosper my way which I go:

43 Behold, I stand by the well of water; and it shall come to pass, that when the virgin cometh forth to draw water, and I say to her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water of thy pitcher to drink;

44 And she say to me, Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels: let the same be the woman whom the Lord hath appointed out for my master's son.

45 And before I had done speaking in mine heart, behold, Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down unto the well, and drew water: and I said unto her, Let me drink, I pray thee.

46 And she made haste, and let down her pitcher from her shoulder, and said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: so I drank, and she made the camels drink also.

47 And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou? And she said, the daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bare unto him: and I put the earring upon her face, and the bracelets upon her hands.

48 And I bowed down my head, and worshipped the Lord, and blessed the Lord God of my master Abraham, which had led me in the right way to take my master's brother's daughter unto his son.

49 And now if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me: and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left.

50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, The thing proceedeth from the Lord: we cannot speak unto thee bad or good.

51 Behold, Rebekah is before thee, take her, and go, and let her be thy master's son's wife, as the Lord hath spoken.

52 And it came to pass, that, when Abraham's servant heard their words, he worshipped the Lord, bowing himself to the earth.

53 And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah: he gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things.

54 And they did eat and drink, he and the men that were with him, and tarried all night; and they rose up in the morning, and he said, Send me away unto my master.

55 And her brother and her mother said, Let the damsel abide with us a few days, at the least ten; after that she shall go.

56 And he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing the Lord hath prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master.

57 And they said, We will call the damsel, and enquire at her mouth.

58 And they called Rebekah, and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go.

59 And they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham's servant, and his men.

60 And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them.

61 And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah, and went his way.

62 And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahairoi; for he dwelt in the south country.

63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming.

64 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the camel.

65 For she had said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant had said, It is my master: therefore she took a vail, and covered herself.

66 And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done.

67 And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother's death.

A Bride for Isaac

24 Now Abraham (A)was old, well advanced in age; and the Lord (B)had blessed Abraham in all things. So Abraham said (C)to the oldest servant of his house, who (D)ruled over all that he had, “Please, (E)put your hand under my thigh, and I will make you (F)swear[a] by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that (G)you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell; (H)but you shall go (I)to my country and to my family, and take a wife for my son Isaac.”

And the servant said to him, “Perhaps the woman will not be willing to follow me to this land. Must I take your son back to the land from which you came?”

But Abraham said to him, “Beware that you do not take my son back there. The Lord God of heaven, who (J)took me from my father’s house and from the land of my family, and who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, (K)‘To your [b]descendants I give this land,’ (L)He will send His angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there. And if the woman is not willing to follow you, then (M)you will be released from this oath; only do not take my son back there.” So the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore to him concerning this matter.

10 Then the servant took ten of his master’s camels and departed, (N)for all his master’s goods were in his hand. And he arose and went to Mesopotamia, to (O)the city of Nahor. 11 And he made his camels kneel down outside the city by a well of water at evening time, the time (P)when women go out to draw water. 12 Then he (Q)said, “O Lord God of my master Abraham, please (R)give me success this day, and show kindness to my master Abraham. 13 Behold, here (S)I stand by the well of water, and (T)the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. 14 Now let it be that the young woman to whom I say, ‘Please let down your pitcher that I may drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink, and I will also give your camels a drink’—let her be the one You have appointed for Your servant Isaac. And (U)by this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master.”

15 And it happened, (V)before he had finished speaking, that behold, (W)Rebekah,[c] who was born to Bethuel, son of (X)Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, came out with her pitcher on her shoulder. 16 Now the young woman (Y)was very beautiful to behold, a virgin; no man had known her. And she went down to the well, filled her pitcher, and came up. 17 And the servant ran to meet her and said, “Please let me drink a little water from your pitcher.”

18 (Z)So she said, “Drink, my lord.” Then she quickly let her pitcher down to her hand, and gave him a drink. 19 And when she had finished giving him a drink, she said, “I will draw water for your camels also, until they have finished drinking.” 20 Then she quickly emptied her pitcher into the trough, ran back to the well to draw water, and drew for all his camels. 21 And the man, wondering at her, remained silent so as to know whether (AA)the Lord had made his journey prosperous or not.

22 So it was, when the camels had finished drinking, that the man took a golden (AB)nose ring weighing half a shekel, and two bracelets for her wrists weighing ten shekels of gold, 23 and said, “Whose daughter are you? Tell me, please, is there room in your father’s house for us [d]to lodge?”

24 So she said to him, (AC)“I am the daughter of Bethuel, Milcah’s son, whom she bore to Nahor.” 25 Moreover she said to him, “We have both straw and feed enough, and room to lodge.”

26 Then the man (AD)bowed down his head and worshiped the Lord. 27 And he said, (AE)“Blessed be the Lord God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken (AF)His mercy and His truth toward my master. As for me, being on the way, the Lord (AG)led me to the house of my master’s brethren.” 28 So the young woman ran and told her mother’s household these things.

29 Now Rebekah had a brother whose name was (AH)Laban, and Laban ran out to the man by the well. 30 So it came to pass, when he saw the nose ring, and the bracelets on his sister’s wrists, and when he heard the words of his sister Rebekah, saying, “Thus the man spoke to me,” that he went to the man. And there he stood by the camels at the well. 31 And he said, “Come in, (AI)O blessed of the Lord! Why do you stand outside? For I have prepared the house, and a place for the camels.”

32 Then the man came to the house. And he unloaded the camels, and (AJ)provided straw and feed for the camels, and water to (AK)wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him. 33 Food was set before him to eat, but he said, (AL)“I will not eat until I have told about my errand.”

And he said, “Speak on.”

34 So he said, “I am Abraham’s servant. 35 The Lord (AM)has blessed my master greatly, and he has become great; and He has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male and female servants, and camels and donkeys. 36 And Sarah my master’s wife (AN)bore a son to my master when she was old; and (AO)to him he has given all that he has. 37 Now my master (AP)made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell; 38 (AQ)but you shall go to my father’s house and to my family, and take a wife for my son.’ 39 (AR)And I said to my master, ‘Perhaps the woman will not follow me.’ 40 (AS)But he said to me, ‘The Lord, (AT)before whom I walk, will send His angel with you and [e]prosper your way; and you shall take a wife for my son from my family and from my father’s house. 41 (AU)You will be clear from this oath when you arrive among my family; for if they will not give her to you, then you will be released from my oath.’

42 “And this day I came to the well and said, (AV)‘O Lord God of my master Abraham, if You will now prosper the way in which I go, 43 (AW)behold, I stand by the well of water; and it shall come to pass that when the virgin comes out to draw water, and I say to her, “Please give me a little water from your pitcher to drink,” 44 and she says to me, “Drink, and I will draw for your camels also,”—let her be the woman whom the Lord has appointed for my master’s son.’

45 (AX)“But before I had finished (AY)speaking in my heart, there was Rebekah, coming out with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down to the well and drew water. And I said to her, ‘Please let me drink.’ 46 And she made haste and let her pitcher down from her shoulder, and said, ‘Drink, and I will give your camels a drink also.’ So I drank, and she gave the camels a drink also. 47 Then I asked her, and said, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ And she said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bore to him.’ So I put the nose ring on her nose and the bracelets on her wrists. 48 (AZ)And I bowed my head and worshiped the Lord, and blessed the Lord God of my master Abraham, who had led me in the way of truth to (BA)take the daughter of my master’s brother for his son. 49 Now if you will (BB)deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me. And if not, tell me, that I may turn to the right hand or to the left.”

50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, (BC)“The thing comes from the Lord; we cannot (BD)speak to you either bad or good. 51 (BE)Here is Rebekah before you; take her and go, and let her be your master’s son’s wife, as the Lord has spoken.”

52 And it came to pass, when Abraham’s servant heard their words, that (BF)he worshiped the Lord, bowing himself to the earth. 53 Then the servant brought out (BG)jewelry of silver, jewelry of gold, and clothing, and gave them to Rebekah. He also gave (BH)precious things to her brother and to her mother.

54 And he and the men who were with him ate and drank and stayed all night. Then they arose in the morning, and he said, (BI)“Send me away to my master.”

55 But her brother and her mother said, “Let the young woman stay with us a few days, at least ten; after that she may go.”

56 And he said to them, “Do not [f]hinder me, since the Lord has prospered my way; send me away so that I may go to my master.”

57 So they said, “We will call the young woman and ask her personally.” 58 Then they called Rebekah and said to her, “Will you go with this man?”

And she said, “I will go.”

59 So they sent away Rebekah their sister (BJ)and her nurse, and Abraham’s servant and his men. 60 And they blessed Rebekah and said to her:

“Our sister, may you become
(BK)The mother of thousands of ten thousands;
(BL)And may your descendants possess
The gates of those who hate them.”

61 Then Rebekah and her maids arose, and they rode on the camels and followed the man. So the servant took Rebekah and departed.

62 Now Isaac came from the way of (BM)Beer Lahai Roi, for he dwelt in the South. 63 And Isaac went out (BN)to meditate in the field in the evening; and he lifted his eyes and looked, and there, the camels were coming. 64 Then Rebekah lifted her eyes, and when she saw Isaac (BO)she dismounted from her camel; 65 for she had said to the servant, “Who is this man walking in the field to meet us?”

The servant said, “It is my master.” So she took a veil and covered herself.

66 And the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. 67 Then Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent; and he (BP)took Rebekah and she became his wife, and he loved her. So Isaac (BQ)was comforted after his mother’s death.

Isaac and Rebekah

24 Now Abraham was old, well advanced in years. And the Lord (A)had blessed Abraham in all things. And Abraham said to his servant, (B)the oldest of his household, who had charge of all that he had, (C)“Put your hand under my thigh, that I may make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and God of the earth, that (D)you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell, (E)but will go to my country and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son Isaac.” The servant said to him, “Perhaps the woman may not be willing to follow me to this land. Must I then take your son back to the land from which you came?” Abraham said to him, “See to it that you do not take my son back there. The Lord, the God of heaven, (F)who took me from my father's house and from the land of my kindred, and who spoke to me and swore to me, (G)‘To your offspring I will give this land,’ (H)he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there. But if the woman is not willing to follow you, then (I)you will be free from this oath of mine; only you must not take my son back there.” So the servant (J)put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master and swore to him concerning this matter.

10 Then the servant took ten of his master's camels and departed, taking all sorts of choice gifts from his master; and he arose and went to (K)Mesopotamia[a] to the city of Nahor. 11 And he made the camels kneel down outside the city by the well of water at the time of evening, the time when (L)women go out to draw water. 12 And he said, “O Lord, (M)God of my master Abraham, (N)please grant me success today and show steadfast love to my master Abraham. 13 Behold, (O)I am standing by the spring of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. 14 Let the young woman to whom I shall say, ‘Please let down your jar that I may drink,’ and who shall say, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels’—let her be the one whom you have appointed for your servant Isaac. (P)By this[b] I shall know that you have shown steadfast love to my master.”

15 Before he had finished speaking, behold, Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel the son of (Q)Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, came out with her water jar on her shoulder. 16 The young woman (R)was very attractive in appearance, a maiden[c] whom no man had known. She went down to the spring and filled her jar and came up. 17 Then the servant ran to meet her and said, “Please give me a little water to drink from your jar.” 18 She said, “Drink, my lord.” And she quickly let down her jar upon her hand and gave him a drink. 19 When she had finished giving him a drink, she said, “I will draw water for your camels also, until they have finished drinking.” 20 So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough and ran again to the well to draw water, and she drew for all his camels. 21 The man gazed at her in silence to learn whether the Lord had prospered his journey or not.

22 When the camels had finished drinking, the man took a gold ring weighing a half shekel,[d] and two bracelets for her arms weighing ten gold shekels, 23 and said, “Please tell me whose daughter you are. Is there room in your father's house for us to spend the night?” 24 She said to him, (S)“I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.” 25 She added, “We have plenty of both straw and fodder, and room to spend the night.” 26 (T)The man bowed his head and worshiped the Lord 27 and said, “Blessed be the Lord, (U)the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken (V)his steadfast love and his faithfulness toward my master. As for me, the Lord (W)has led me in the way to the house of my master's kinsmen.” 28 Then the young woman ran and told her mother's household about these things.

29 Rebekah had a brother whose name was (X)Laban. Laban ran out toward the man, to the spring. 30 As soon as he saw the ring and the bracelets on his sister's arms, and heard the words of Rebekah his sister, “Thus the man spoke to me,” he went to the man. And behold, he was standing by the camels at the spring. 31 He said, “Come in, (Y)O blessed of the Lord. Why do you stand outside? For I have prepared the house and a place for the camels.” 32 So the man came to the house and unharnessed the camels, and gave (Z)straw and fodder to the camels, and there was (AA)water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him. 33 Then food was set before him to eat. But he said, “I will not eat until I have said what I have to say.” He said, “Speak on.”

34 So he said, “I am Abraham's servant. 35 The Lord (AB)has greatly blessed my master, and he has become great. He has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male servants and female servants, camels and donkeys. 36 And Sarah my master's wife (AC)bore a son to my master when she was old, and (AD)to him he has given all that he has. 37 (AE)My master made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell, 38 but you shall go to my father's house and to my clan and take a wife for my son.’ 39 I said to my master, ‘Perhaps the woman will not follow me.’ 40 But he said to me, ‘The Lord, (AF)before whom I have walked, will send his angel with you and (AG)prosper your way. You shall take a wife for my son from my clan and from my father's house. 41 Then you will be free from my oath, when you come to my clan. And if they will not give her to you, you will be free from my oath.’

42 “I came today to the spring and said, (AH)‘O Lord, the God of my master Abraham, if now you (AI)are prospering the way that I go, 43 behold, I am standing (AJ)by the spring of water. Let the virgin who comes out to draw water, to whom I shall say, “Please give me a little water from your jar to drink,” 44 (AK)and who will say to me, “Drink, and I will draw for your camels also,” let her be the woman whom the Lord has appointed for my master's son.’

45 “Before I had finished (AL)speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came out with her water jar on her shoulder, and she went down to the spring and drew water. I said to her, ‘Please let me drink.’ 46 She quickly let down her jar from her shoulder and said, ‘Drink, and I will give your camels drink also.’ So I drank, and she gave the camels drink also. 47 Then I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ She said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bore to him.’ (AM)So I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her arms. 48 (AN)Then I bowed my head and worshiped the Lord and blessed the Lord, (AO)the God of my master Abraham, who had led me by the right way[e] to take (AP)the daughter of my master's kinsman for his son. 49 Now then, if you are going to (AQ)show steadfast love and faithfulness to my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, that I may turn to the right hand or to the left.”

50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, “The thing has come from the Lord; we cannot (AR)speak to you bad or good. 51 Behold, Rebekah is before you; take her and go, and let her be the wife of your master's son, (AS)as the Lord has spoken.”

52 When Abraham's servant heard their words, (AT)he bowed himself to the earth before the Lord. 53 And the servant brought out jewelry of silver and of gold, and garments, and gave them to Rebekah. He also gave to her brother and to her mother costly ornaments. 54 And he and the men who were with him ate and drank, and they spent the night there. When they arose in the morning, he said, (AU)“Send me away to my master.” 55 Her brother and her mother said, “Let the young woman remain with us a while, at least ten days; after that she may go.” 56 But he said to them, “Do not delay me, since the Lord has prospered my way. Send me away that I may go to my master.” 57 They said, “Let us call the young woman and ask her.” 58 And they called Rebekah and said to her, “Will you go with this man?” She said, “I will go.” 59 So they sent away Rebekah their sister and (AV)her nurse, and Abraham's servant and his men. 60 And they blessed Rebekah and said to her,

“Our sister, may you (AW)become
    thousands of ten thousands,
and (AX)may your offspring possess
    the gate of those who hate him!”[f]

61 Then Rebekah and her young women arose and rode on the camels and followed the man. Thus the servant took Rebekah and went his way.

62 Now Isaac had returned from (AY)Beer-lahai-roi and was dwelling in the Negeb. 63 And Isaac went out (AZ)to meditate in the field toward evening. And he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, there were camels coming. 64 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she dismounted from the camel 65 and said to the servant, “Who is that man, walking in the field to meet us?” The servant said, “It is my master.” So she took her veil and covered herself. 66 And the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. 67 Then Isaac brought her into the tent of Sarah his mother and took Rebekah, and she became his wife, and he loved her. So Isaac was (BA)comforted after his mother's (BB)death.
