23 Fue la vida de Sara ciento veintisiete años; tantos fueron los años de la vida de Sara. 2 Y murió Sara en Quiriat-arba, que es Hebrón, en la tierra de Canaán; y vino Abraham a hacer duelo por Sara, y a llorarla. 3 Y se levantó Abraham de delante de su muerta, y habló a los hijos de Het, diciendo: 4 Extranjero y forastero soy entre vosotros;(A) dadme propiedad para sepultura entre vosotros,(B) y sepultaré mi muerta de delante de mí. 5 Y respondieron los hijos de Het a Abraham, y le dijeron: 6 Óyenos, señor nuestro; eres un príncipe de Dios entre nosotros; en lo mejor de nuestros sepulcros sepulta a tu muerta; ninguno de nosotros te negará su sepulcro, ni te impedirá que entierres tu muerta. 7 Y Abraham se levantó, y se inclinó al pueblo de aquella tierra, a los hijos de Het, 8 y habló con ellos, diciendo: Si tenéis voluntad de que yo sepulte mi muerta de delante de mí, oídme, e interceded por mí con Efrón hijo de Zohar, 9 para que me dé la cueva de Macpela, que tiene al extremo de su heredad; que por su justo precio me la dé, para posesión de sepultura en medio de vosotros. 10 Este Efrón estaba entre los hijos de Het; y respondió Efrón heteo a Abraham, en presencia de los hijos de Het, de todos los que entraban por la puerta de su ciudad, diciendo: 11 No, señor mío, óyeme: te doy la heredad, y te doy también la cueva que está en ella; en presencia de los hijos de mi pueblo te la doy; sepulta tu muerta. 12 Entonces Abraham se inclinó delante del pueblo de la tierra, 13 y respondió a Efrón en presencia del pueblo de la tierra, diciendo: Antes, si te place, te ruego que me oigas. Yo daré el precio de la heredad; tómalo de mí, y sepultaré en ella mi muerta. 14 Respondió Efrón a Abraham, diciéndole: 15 Señor mío, escúchame: la tierra vale cuatrocientos siclos de plata; ¿qué es esto entre tú y yo? Entierra, pues, tu muerta. 16 Entonces Abraham se convino con Efrón, y pesó Abraham a Efrón el dinero que dijo, en presencia de los hijos de Het, cuatrocientos siclos de plata, de buena ley entre mercaderes.
17 Y quedó la heredad de Efrón que estaba en Macpela al oriente de Mamre, la heredad con la cueva que estaba en ella, y todos los árboles que había en la heredad, y en todos sus contornos, 18 como propiedad de Abraham, en presencia de los hijos de Het y de todos los que entraban por la puerta de la ciudad. 19 Después de esto sepultó Abraham a Sara su mujer en la cueva de la heredad de Macpela al oriente de Mamre, que es Hebrón, en la tierra de Canaán. 20 Y quedó la heredad y la cueva que en ella había, de Abraham, como una posesión para sepultura, recibida de los hijos de Het.

23 Sara vivió ciento veintisiete años, 2 y murió en Quiriat-arbá, o sea la ciudad de Hebrón, en la tierra de Canaán. Abraham lloró por la muerte de Sara y le guardó luto. 3 Luego salió de donde estaba el cadáver de Sara y fue a decirles a los hititas de aquel lugar:
4 —Aunque soy un extranjero entre ustedes, véndanme un sepulcro para enterrar a mi esposa.
5 Y los hititas le contestaron:
6 —¡Por favor, señor, escúchenos! Usted es entre nosotros un escogido de Dios. Entierre a su esposa en el mejor de nuestros sepulcros, pues ninguno de nosotros le negará su sepulcro para eso.
7 Entonces Abraham se puso de pie, hizo una reverencia ante los hititas, 8 y les dijo:
—Si de veras quieren que yo entierre aquí a mi esposa, por favor pídanle de mi parte a Efrón, el hijo de Sóhar, 9 que me venda la cueva de Macpelá, que está en la orilla de sus terrenos. Yo le pagaré el precio total de la cueva, y así seré dueño de un sepulcro en este lugar.
10 Como Efrón el hitita estaba allí entre ellos, le contestó a Abraham de manera que pudieran escucharlo sus paisanos y también todos los que pasaban por la entrada de la ciudad:
11 —¡No, señor mío, por favor! Yo le regalo el terreno, y la cueva que está en el terreno. Mis paisanos son testigos de que yo se lo regalo. Entierre usted a su esposa.
12 Pero Abraham volvió a hacer una reverencia a los habitantes del lugar 13 y le contestó a Efrón delante de todos:
—¡Por favor, escúcheme usted! Le ruego que acepte el dinero por el terreno, y después enterraré allí a mi esposa.
14 Entonces Efrón le contestó:
15 —Escúcheme, señor mío: el terreno vale cuatrocientas monedas de plata. Por esa cantidad no vamos a discutir, así que entierre usted a su esposa.
16 Abraham aceptó pagar la cantidad que Efrón había mencionado en presencia de los hititas, y le pagó en plata contante y sonante. 17 De esta manera el terreno de Efrón que estaba en Macpelá, al oriente de Mamré, es decir, el terreno con la cueva y todos los árboles que estaban dentro del terreno, 18 pasaron a ser propiedad de Abraham. De ello fueron testigos los hititas y todos los que pasaban por la entrada de la ciudad.
19 Después de esto Abraham enterró a Sara en la cueva que estaba en el terreno de Macpelá, al oriente de Mamré, lugar que también es conocido con el nombre de Hebrón, y que está en Canaán. 20 Así quedó en posesión del terreno y de la cueva que allí había, la cual los hititas le vendieron para sepultura.

23 And Sarah lived[a] one hundred and twenty-seven years; these were the years of the life of Sarah. 2 And Sarah died in Kiriath Arba; that is Hebron, in the land of Canaan. 3 And Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her. And Abraham rose up from his dead, and he spoke to the Hittites[b] and said, 4 “I am a stranger and an alien among you; give to me my own burial site[c] among you so that I may bury my dead from before me.” 5 And the Hittites[d] answered Abraham and said to him, 6 “Hear us, my lord, you are a mighty prince[e] in our midst. Bury your dead in the choicest of our burial sites. None of us will withhold his burial site[f] from you for burying your dead.” 7 And Abraham rose up and bowed to the people of the land, to the Hittites.[g] 8 And he spoke with them, saying, “If you are willing[h] that I bury my dead from before me, hear me and intercede for me with Ephron the son of Zohar, 9 that he may sell[i] to me the cave of Machpelah which belongs to him,[j] which is at the end of his field. At full value let him sell[k] it to me in your midst as a burial site.”[l] 10 Now Ephron was sitting among the Hittites.[m] And Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the hearing of the Hittites[n] with respect to all who were entering the gate of his city, and said, 11 “No, my lord, hear me. I give you the field and the cave which is in it, I also give it to you in the sight of the children of my people I give it to you. Bury your dead.” 12 And Abraham bowed before the people of the land. 13 And he spoke to Ephron in the hearing of the people of the land, saying, “If only you will hear me[o]—I give the price of the field. Take it from me that I may bury my dead there.” 14 And Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him, 15 “My lord, hear me. A piece of land worth four hundred shekels of silver—what is that between me and you? Bury your dead.” 16 Then Abraham listened to Ephron, and Abraham weighed for Ephron the silver that he had named[p] in the hearing of the Hittites:[q] four hundred shekels of silver at the merchants’ current rate.[r] 17 So the field of Ephron which was in the Machpelah, which was near Mamre—the field and the cave which was in it, with all the trees that were in the field, which were within all its surrounding boundaries—passed[s] 18 to Abraham as a property in the presence of the Hittites,[t] with respect to all who were entering the gate of his city. 19 And thus afterward Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah near Mamre; that is Hebron, in the land of Canaan. 20 And the field and the cave which was in it passed[u] to Abraham as a burial site[v] from the Hittites.[w]

The Death of Sarah
23 Sarah lived to be a hundred and twenty-seven years old. 2 She died at Kiriath Arba(A) (that is, Hebron)(B) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep over her.(C)
3 Then Abraham rose from beside his dead wife and spoke to the Hittites.[a](D) He said, 4 “I am a foreigner and stranger(E) among you. Sell me some property for a burial site here so I can bury my dead.(F)”
5 The Hittites replied to Abraham, 6 “Sir, listen to us. You are a mighty prince(G) among us. Bury your dead in the choicest of our tombs. None of us will refuse you his tomb for burying your dead.”
7 Then Abraham rose and bowed down before the people of the land, the Hittites. 8 He said to them, “If you are willing to let me bury my dead, then listen to me and intercede with Ephron son of Zohar(H) on my behalf 9 so he will sell me the cave of Machpelah,(I) which belongs to him and is at the end of his field. Ask him to sell it to me for the full price as a burial site among you.”
10 Ephron the Hittite was sitting among his people and he replied to Abraham in the hearing of all the Hittites(J) who had come to the gate(K) of his city. 11 “No, my lord,” he said. “Listen to me; I give[b](L) you the field, and I give[c] you the cave that is in it. I give[d] it to you in the presence of my people. Bury your dead.”
12 Again Abraham bowed down before the people of the land 13 and he said to Ephron in their hearing, “Listen to me, if you will. I will pay the price of the field. Accept it from me so I can bury my dead there.”
14 Ephron answered Abraham, 15 “Listen to me, my lord; the land is worth four hundred shekels[e] of silver,(M) but what is that between you and me? Bury your dead.”
16 Abraham agreed to Ephron’s terms and weighed out for him the price he had named in the hearing of the Hittites: four hundred shekels of silver,(N) according to the weight current among the merchants.(O)
17 So Ephron’s field in Machpelah(P) near Mamre(Q)—both the field and the cave in it, and all the trees within the borders of the field—was deeded 18 to Abraham as his property(R) in the presence of all the Hittites(S) who had come to the gate(T) of the city. 19 Afterward Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave in the field of Machpelah(U) near Mamre (which is at Hebron(V)) in the land of Canaan.(W) 20 So the field and the cave in it were deeded(X) to Abraham by the Hittites as a burial site.(Y)
