⁷ And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” ⁸ Abraham said, ^(A)“God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together.

⁹ When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and ^(B)laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. ¹⁰ Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. ¹¹ But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” ¹² He said, ^(C)“Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for ^(D)now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.” ¹³ And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. ¹⁴ So Abraham called the name of that place, ^(E)“The Lord will provide”;^[a] as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”^[b]

⁵¹ Truly, truly, ^(A)I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never ^(B)see death.” ⁵² The Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon! ^(C)Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet ^(D)you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never ^(E)taste death.’ ^53 (F)Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself out to be?” ⁵⁴ Jesus answered, ^(G)“If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. ^(H)It is my Father who glorifies me, ^(I)of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’^{[a] 55} But ^(J)you have not known him. ^(K)I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be ^(L)a liar ^(M)like you, but I do know him and I keep his word. ^56 (N)Your father Abraham ^(O)rejoiced ^(P)that he would see my day. ^(Q)He saw it and was glad.” ⁵⁷ So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?”^{[b] 58} Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, ^(R)I am.” ⁵⁹ So ^(S)they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.
