The Birth of Isaac
21 The Lord came to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised.(A) 2 Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the appointed time God had told him.(B) 3 Abraham named his son who was born to him – the one Sarah bore to him – Isaac.(C) 4 When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God had commanded him.(D) 5 Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.(E)
6 Sarah said, ‘God has made me laugh, and everyone who hears will laugh with me.’[a](F) 7 She also said, ‘Who would have told Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne a son for him[b] in his old age.’
Hagar and Ishmael Sent Away
8 The child grew and was weaned, and Abraham held a great feast on the day Isaac was weaned. 9 But Sarah saw the son mocking – the one Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham.(G) 10 So she said to Abraham, ‘Drive out this slave with her son, for the son of this slave will not be a coheir with my son Isaac! ’(H)
11 This was very distressing to[c] Abraham because of his son. 12 But God said to Abraham, ‘Do not be distressed[d] about the boy and about your slave. Whatever Sarah says to you, listen to her, because your offspring will be traced through Isaac,(I) 13 and I will also make a nation of the slave’s son(J) because he is your offspring.’
14 Early in the morning Abraham got up, took bread and a waterskin, put them on Hagar’s shoulders, and sent her and the boy away. She left and wandered in the Wilderness of Beer-sheba. 15 When the water in the skin was gone, she left the boy under one of the bushes 16 and went and sat at a distance, about a bow shot away, for she said, ‘I can’t bear to watch the boy die! ’ While she sat at a distance, she[e] wept loudly.(K)
17 God heard the boy crying, and the[f] angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, ‘What’s wrong, Hagar? Don’t be afraid, for God has heard the boy crying from the place where he is. 18 Get up, help the boy up, and grasp his hand, for I will make him a great nation.’ 19 Then God opened her eyes,(L) and she saw a well. So she went and filled the waterskin and gave the boy a drink. 20 God was with the boy, and he grew; he settled in the wilderness and became an archer. 21 He settled in the Wilderness of Paran, and his mother got a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
Abraham’s Covenant with Abimelech
22 At that time Abimelech, accompanied by Phicol the commander of his army,(M) said to Abraham, ‘God is with you in everything you do.(N) 23 Swear to me by God here and now, that you will not break an agreement with me or with my children and descendants. As I have been loyal to you, so you will be loyal to me and to the country where you are a resident foreigner.’
24 And Abraham said, ‘I swear it.’ 25 But Abraham complained to Abimelech because of the well that Abimelech’s servants had seized.(O)
26 Abimelech replied, ‘I don’t know who did this thing. You didn’t report anything to me, so I hadn’t heard about it until today.’
27 Abraham took flocks and herds and gave them to Abimelech, and the two of them made a covenant.(P) 28 Abraham separated seven ewe lambs from the flock. 29 And Abimelech said to Abraham, ‘Why have you separated these seven ewe lambs? ’
30 He replied, ‘You are to accept the seven ewe lambs from me so that this act[g] will serve as my witness that I dug this well.’ 31 Therefore that place was called Beer-sheba[h](Q) because it was there that the two of them swore an oath. 32 After they had made a covenant at Beer-sheba, Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, left and returned to the land of the Philistines.
33 Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beer-sheba, and there he called on the name of the Lord, the Everlasting God.(R) 34 And Abraham lived as a foreigner in the land of the Philistines for many days.

— Dios me ha hecho alegrarme, y todos los que sepan que he tenido un hijo, se alegrarán conmigo.
7 Y añadió:
— ¡Quién le iba a decir a Abrahán que Sara amamantaría hijos! Sin embargo, yo le he dado un hijo, a pesar de su vejez.
Agar e Ismael son expulsados
8 El niño creció y fue destetado; el día en que lo destetaron Abrahán ofreció un banquete.
9 Un día, Sara vio que el hijo que Abrahán había tenido de la egipcia Agar jugaba con su hijo Isaac; 10 dijo entonces a Abrahán:
— ¡Echa de aquí a esa esclava y a su hijo! Porque el hijo de esa esclava no va a compartir la herencia con mi hijo Isaac.
11 Esto le dolió mucho a Abrahán, porque Ismael también era hijo suyo. 12 Pero Dios le dijo:
— No te angusties por el muchacho ni por tu esclava. Hazle caso a Sara, porque la descendencia que llevará tu nombre será la de Isaac. 13 Pero también del hijo de la esclava haré una gran nación, porque es descendiente tuyo.
14 Al día siguiente, Abrahán se levantó de madrugada, tomó pan y un odre de agua, lo cargó a hombros de Agar y la despidió con el niño. Ella se marchó y anduvo sin rumbo por el desierto de Berseba. 15 Cuando se acabó el agua del odre, dejó al niño bajo un arbusto, 16 se alejó y se sentó a solas a la distancia de un tiro de arco, pues no quería verle morir. Sentada a distancia lloró amargamente.
17 Dios escuchó al niño llorar, y desde el cielo el mensajero de Dios llamó a Agar y le dijo:
— ¿Qué te pasa, Agar? No temas, pues Dios ha escuchado los sollozos del niño que está ahí. 18 ¡Anda, vete a donde está el muchacho y agárralo con fuerza de la mano, porque yo haré de él una gran nación!
19 Entonces Dios le abrió a Agar los ojos y vio un pozo de agua. Enseguida fue allá, llenó el odre y dio de beber al niño. 20 Dios protegió al niño, y este fue creciendo. Vivía en el desierto y era un buen tirador de arco; 21 habitó en el desierto de Parán y su madre lo casó con una mujer egipcia.
Alianza entre Abrahán y Abimélec
22 En aquel tiempo Abimélec, acompañado de Picol, jefe de su ejército, dijo a Abrahán:
— Dios está contigo en todo lo que haces. 23 Por tanto, júrame por Dios, aquí mismo, que no me traicionarás ni a mí, ni a mis hijos, ni a mis parientes, sino que me tratarás a mí y al país que te ha acogido con la misma lealtad que yo te he mostrado.
24 Abrahán respondió:
— Te lo juro.
25 Pero Abrahán llamó la atención a Abimélec por causa de un pozo de agua del cual los siervos de Abimélec se habían apropiado por la fuerza. 26 Y Abimélec le dijo:
— No tengo idea de quién pudo haber hecho esto. Yo no sabía nada de esto y tampoco tú me habías dicho nada.
27 Entonces Abrahán tomó algunas ovejas y vacas, se las dio a Abimélec y los dos hicieron una alianza. 28 Después Abrahán apartó siete corderas del rebaño, 29 por lo que Abimélec le preguntó:
— ¿Para qué has apartado estas siete corderas?
30 Abrahán le respondió:
— Para que estas siete corderas que hoy te regalo sirvan de testimonio de que yo cavé este pozo.
31 Por esa razón, aquel lugar se llamó Berseba, pues allí los dos hicieron un juramento.
32 Una vez sellada la alianza en Berseba, Abimélec en compañía de Picol, el jefe de su ejército, regresó al país de los filisteos. 33 Allí, en Berseba, Abrahán plantó un tamarisco, y en ese lugar invocó el nombre del Señor, el Dios eterno. 34 Durante mucho tiempo Abrahán habitó en el país de los filisteos.

Isaac Is Born(A)
21 And the Lord (B)visited Sarah as He had said, and the Lord did for Sarah (C)as He had spoken. 2 For Sarah (D)conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, (E)at the set time of which God had spoken to him. 3 And Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him—whom Sarah bore to him—(F)Isaac.[a] 4 Then Abraham (G)circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, (H)as God had commanded him. 5 Now (I)Abraham was one hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. 6 And Sarah said, (J)“God has [b]made me laugh, and all who hear (K)will laugh with me.” 7 She also said, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? (L)For I have borne him a son in his old age.”
Hagar and Ishmael Depart(M)
8 So the child grew and was weaned. And Abraham made a great feast on the same day that Isaac was weaned.
9 And Sarah saw the son of Hagar (N)the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, (O)scoffing.[c] 10 Therefore she said to Abraham, (P)“Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, namely with Isaac.” 11 And the matter was very [d]displeasing in Abraham’s sight (Q)because of his son.
12 But God said to Abraham, “Do not let it be displeasing in your sight because of the lad or because of your bondwoman. Whatever Sarah has said to you, listen to her voice; for (R)in Isaac your seed shall be called. 13 Yet I will also make (S)a nation of the son of the bondwoman, because he is your [e]seed.”
14 So Abraham rose early in the morning, and took bread and [f]a skin of water; and putting it on her shoulder, he gave it and the boy to Hagar, and (T)sent her away. Then she departed and wandered in the Wilderness of Beersheba. 15 And the water in the skin was used up, and she placed the boy under one of the shrubs. 16 Then she went and sat down across from him at a distance of about a bowshot; for she said to herself, “Let me not see the death of the boy.” So she sat opposite him, and lifted her voice and wept.
17 And (U)God heard the voice of the lad. Then the (V)angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said to her, “What ails you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is. 18 Arise, lift up the lad and hold him with your hand, for (W)I will make him a great nation.”
19 Then (X)God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. And she went and filled the skin with water, and gave the lad a drink. 20 So God (Y)was with the lad; and he grew and dwelt in the wilderness, (Z)and became an archer. 21 He dwelt in the Wilderness of Paran; and his mother (AA)took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
A Covenant with Abimelech
22 And it came to pass at that time that (AB)Abimelech and Phichol, the commander of his army, spoke to Abraham, saying, (AC)“God is with you in all that you do. 23 Now therefore, (AD)swear[g] to me by God that you will not deal falsely with me, with my offspring, or with my posterity; but that according to the kindness that I have done to you, you will do to me and to the land in which you have dwelt.”
24 And Abraham said, “I will swear.”
25 Then Abraham rebuked Abimelech because of a well of water which Abimelech’s servants (AE)had seized. 26 And Abimelech said, “I do not know who has done this thing; you did not tell me, nor had I heard of it until today.” 27 So Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Abimelech, and the two of them (AF)made a [h]covenant. 28 And Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves.
29 Then Abimelech asked Abraham, (AG)“What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs which you have set by themselves?”
30 And he said, “You will take these seven ewe lambs from my hand, that (AH)they may be my witness that I have dug this well.” 31 Therefore he (AI)called that place [i]Beersheba, because the two of them swore an oath there.
32 Thus they made a covenant at Beersheba. So Abimelech rose with Phichol, the commander of his army, and they returned to the land of the Philistines. 33 Then Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and (AJ)there called on the name of the Lord, (AK)the Everlasting God. 34 And Abraham stayed in the land of the Philistines many days.
