The Birth of Isaac
21 The Lord came to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised.(A) 2 Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the appointed time God had told him.(B) 3 Abraham named his son who was born to him—the one Sarah bore to him—Isaac.(C) 4 When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God had commanded him.(D) 5 Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.(E)
6 Sarah said, “God has made me laugh, and everyone who hears will laugh with me.”[a](F) 7 She also said, “Who would have told Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne a son for him[b] in his old age.”
Hagar and Ishmael Sent Away
8 The child grew and was weaned, and Abraham held a great feast on the day Isaac was weaned. 9 But Sarah saw the son mocking—the one Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham.(G) 10 So she said to Abraham, “Drive out this slave with her son, for the son of this slave will not be a coheir with my son Isaac!” (H)
11 This was very distressing to[c] Abraham because of his son. 12 But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed[d] about the boy and about your slave. Whatever Sarah says to you, listen to her, because your offspring will be traced through Isaac,(I) 13 and I will also make a nation of the slave’s son(J) because he is your offspring.”
14 Early in the morning Abraham got up, took bread and a waterskin, put them on Hagar’s shoulders, and sent her and the boy away. She left and wandered in the Wilderness of Beer-sheba. 15 When the water in the skin was gone, she left the boy under one of the bushes 16 and went and sat at a distance, about a bowshot away, for she said, “I can’t bear to watch the boy die!” While she sat at a distance, she[e] wept loudly.(K)
17 God heard the boy crying, and the[f] angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What’s wrong, Hagar? Don’t be afraid, for God has heard the boy crying from the place where he is. 18 Get up, help the boy up, and grasp his hand, for I will make him a great nation.” 19 Then God opened her eyes,(L) and she saw a well. So she went and filled the waterskin and gave the boy a drink. 20 God was with the boy, and he grew; he settled in the wilderness and became an archer. 21 He settled in the Wilderness of Paran, and his mother got a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
Abraham’s Covenant with Abimelech
22 At that time Abimelech, accompanied by Phicol the commander of his army,(M) said to Abraham, “God is with you in everything you do.(N) 23 Swear to me by God here and now, that you will not break an agreement with me or with my children and descendants. As I have been loyal to you, so you will be loyal to me and to the country where you are a resident alien.”
24 And Abraham said, “I swear it.” 25 But Abraham complained to Abimelech because of the well that Abimelech’s servants had seized.(O)
26 Abimelech replied, “I don’t know who did this thing. You didn’t report anything to me, so I hadn’t heard about it until today.”
27 Abraham took flocks and herds and gave them to Abimelech, and the two of them made a covenant.(P) 28 Abraham separated seven ewe lambs from the flock. 29 And Abimelech said to Abraham, “Why have you separated these seven ewe lambs?”
30 He replied, “You are to accept the seven ewe lambs from me so that this act[g] will serve as my witness that I dug this well.” 31 Therefore that place was called Beer-sheba[h](Q) because it was there that the two of them swore an oath. 32 After they had made a covenant at Beer-sheba, Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, left and returned to the land of the Philistines.
33 Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beer-sheba, and there he called on the name of the Lord, the Everlasting God.(R) 34 And Abraham lived as an alien in the land of the Philistines for many days.

The Birth of Isaac
21 Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah(A) as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised.(B) 2 Sarah became pregnant and bore a son(C) to Abraham in his old age,(D) at the very time God had promised him.(E) 3 Abraham gave the name Isaac[a](F) to the son Sarah bore him. 4 When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him,(G) as God commanded him. 5 Abraham was a hundred years old(H) when his son Isaac was born to him.
6 Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter,(I) and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” 7 And she added, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”(J)
Hagar and Ishmael Sent Away
8 The child grew and was weaned,(K) and on the day Isaac was weaned Abraham held a great feast. 9 But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham(L) was mocking,(M) 10 and she said to Abraham, “Get rid of that slave woman(N) and her son, for that woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac.”(O)
11 The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son.(P) 12 But God said to him, “Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring[b] will be reckoned.(Q) 13 I will make the son of the slave into a nation(R) also, because he is your offspring.”
14 Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar.(S) He set them on her shoulders and then sent her off with the boy. She went on her way and wandered in the Desert of Beersheba.(T)
15 When the water in the skin was gone, she put the boy under one of the bushes. 16 Then she went off and sat down about a bowshot away, for she thought, “I cannot watch the boy die.” And as she sat there, she[c] began to sob.(U)
17 God heard the boy crying,(V) and the angel of God(W) called to Hagar from heaven(X) and said to her, “What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid;(Y) God has heard the boy crying as he lies there. 18 Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.(Z)”
19 Then God opened her eyes(AA) and she saw a well of water.(AB) So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.
20 God was with the boy(AC) as he grew up. He lived in the desert and became an archer. 21 While he was living in the Desert of Paran,(AD) his mother got a wife for him(AE) from Egypt.
The Treaty at Beersheba
22 At that time Abimelek(AF) and Phicol the commander of his forces(AG) said to Abraham, “God is with you in everything you do.(AH) 23 Now swear(AI) to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or my descendants.(AJ) Show to me and the country where you now reside as a foreigner the same kindness I have shown to you.”(AK)
24 Abraham said, “I swear it.”
25 Then Abraham complained to Abimelek about a well of water that Abimelek’s servants had seized.(AL) 26 But Abimelek said, “I don’t know who has done this. You did not tell me, and I heard about it only today.”
27 So Abraham brought sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelek, and the two men made a treaty.(AM) 28 Abraham set apart seven ewe lambs from the flock, 29 and Abimelek asked Abraham, “What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs you have set apart by themselves?”
30 He replied, “Accept these seven lambs from my hand as a witness(AN) that I dug this well.(AO)”
31 So that place was called Beersheba,[d](AP) because the two men swore an oath(AQ) there.
32 After the treaty(AR) had been made at Beersheba,(AS) Abimelek and Phicol the commander of his forces(AT) returned to the land of the Philistines.(AU) 33 Abraham planted a tamarisk tree(AV) in Beersheba, and there he called on the name of the Lord,(AW) the Eternal God.(AX) 34 And Abraham stayed in the land of the Philistines(AY) for a long time.

21 Herren såg till Sara så som han hade lovat, och Herren gjorde med Sara som han hade sagt. 2 Sara blev havande och födde en son åt Abraham på hans ålderdom, just vid den tid som Gud hade sagt honom. 3 Abraham gav den son som Sara hade fött åt honom namnet Isak. 4 Och Abraham omskar sin son Isak när han var åtta dagar gammal, som Gud hade befallt honom. 5 Abraham var etthundra år när hans son Isak föddes. 6 Sara sade: "Gud har fått mig att le. Alla som får höra detta kommer att le med mig." 7 Och hon sade: "Vem hade kunnat säga Abraham att Sara skulle amma barn? Men nu har jag fött en son på hans ålderdom!"
Ismael och Hagar drivs bort
8 Barnet växte och blev avvant, och den dag då Isak avvandes gjorde Abraham en stor fest. 9 Men då Sara såg att den egyptiska kvinnans son hånskrattade, den son som Hagar fött åt Abraham, 10 sade hon till Abraham: "Driv ut den här slavinnan och hennes son, för den här slavinnans son skall inte dela arvet med min son, med Isak." 11 Abraham tog mycket illa vid sig för sin sons skull. 12 Men Gud sade till Abraham: "Tag inte illa vid dig för pojkens och din slavinnas skull. Lyd Sara i allt hon säger till dig, ty det är genom Isak som du skall få din avkomma. 13 Men också slavinnans son skall jag göra till ett folk, eftersom han är din avkomling."
14 Tidigt nästa morgon tog Abraham bröd och en lädersäck med vatten och gav det till Hagar. Han lade det på hennes axlar och lät henne gå tillsammans med pojken. Hon gav sig i väg och irrade omkring i Beer-Shebas öken. 15 När vattnet i lädersäcken hade tagit slut, övergav hon pojken under en buske 16 och gick och satte sig en bit bort, på ett bågskotts avstånd, ty hon tänkte: "Jag orkar inte se på när pojken dör." Där hon nu satt på något avstånd brast hon i gråt.
17 Då hörde Gud pojkens röst, och Guds ängel ropade till Hagar från himlen och sade till henne: "Hur är det, Hagar? Var inte rädd! Gud har hört pojkens rop där han ligger. 18 Gå och res upp honom och tag hand om honom. Jag skall göra honom till ett stort folk." 19 Och Gud öppnade hennes ögon, så att hon fick syn på en brunn med vatten. Hon gick dit och fyllde sin lädersäck med vatten och gav pojken att dricka.
20 Gud var med pojken, och denne växte upp och bodde i öknen och blev bågskytt. 21 Han bosatte sig i öknen Paran, och hans mor tog en hustru åt honom från Egypten.
Abraham sluter förbund med Abimelek
22 Vid den tiden kom Abimelek med sin befälhavare Pikol och sade till Abraham: "Gud är med dig i allt du gör. 23 Lova mig nu med ed inför Gud att du inte sviker mig eller mina barn och efterkommande, utan visar mig och det land där du bor som främling samma godhet som jag har visat dig." 24 Abraham sade: "Ja, jag svär."
25 Men Abraham förebrådde Abimelek för att hans tjänare hade lagt beslag på en vattenbrunn. 26 Abimelek svarade: "Jag vet inte vem som har gjort det. Själv har du ingenting sagt och jag har inte hört något om det förrän i dag." 27 Då tog Abraham får och nötboskap och gav åt Abimelek, och de slöt förbund med varandra. 28 Men Abraham ställde sju lamm av hjorden åt sidan. 29 Då sade Abimelek till Abraham: "Vad betyder de sju lammen som du har ställt åt sidan?" 30 Han svarade: "Dessa sju lamm skall du ta emot av mig till ett vittnesbörd om att det är jag som har grävt brunnen." 31 Sedan kallades platsen Beer-Sheba,[a] eftersom de båda svor eden där.
32 Och de slöt förbund vid Beer-Sheba, och därefter bröt Abimelek och hans befälhavare Pikol upp och återvände till filisteernas land. 33 Abraham planterade en tamarisk vid Beer-Sheba och åkallade där Herrens, den evige Gudens, namn. 34 Sedan bodde Abraham som främling i filisteernas land en lång tid.
