Ang Pagsilang ni Isaac
21 Ngayon, inalala ng Panginoon si Sara ayon sa kanyang ipinangako. 2 Nagbuntis si Sara at nanganak ng lalaki kahit matanda na si Abraham. Isinilang ang sanggol sa panahon na sinabi noon ng Dios. 3 Pinangalanan ni Abraham ang sanggol na Isaac.
4 Nang walong araw na ang sanggol, tinuli siya ni Abraham ayon sa iniutos sa kanya ng Dios. 5 Nang ipinanganak si Isaac, 100 taong gulang na si Abraham. 6 Sinabi ni Sara, “Pinatawa ako ng Dios, at kahit sinong makarinig ng tungkol sa nangyari sa akin ay matatawa rin. 7 Sino kaya ang makapagsasabi kay Abraham na makakapagpasuso pa ako ng sanggol? Pero nagkaanak pa ako kahit matanda na siya.”
8 Lumaki si Isaac, at nang araw na naawat na siya sa pagsuso sa kanyang ina, nagdaos si Abraham ng isang malaking handaan.
Pinalayas si Hagar at si Ishmael
9 Isang araw, nakita ni Sara na tinutukso ni Ishmael si Isaac. (Si Ishmael ay anak ni Abraham kay Hagar na Egipcio.) 10 Kaya sinabi ni Sara kay Abraham, “Palayasin mo ang babaeng alipin at ang anak niya, dahil ang anak ng babaeng alipin ay hindi maaaring makibahagi sa mamanahin ng anak kong si Isaac.” 11 Labis itong ikinalungkot ni Abraham dahil anak din niya si Ishmael. 12 Pero sinabi ng Dios sa kanya, “Hindi mo dapat ikalungkot ang tungkol kay Ishmael at kay Hagar. Sundin mo ang sinabi ni Sara, dahil kay Isaac magmumula ang mga lahi na aking ipinangako. 13 At tungkol naman kay Ishmael, bibigyan ko rin siya ng maraming lahi at magiging isang bansa rin sila, dahil anak mo rin siya.”
14 Kinabukasan, maagang kumuha si Abraham ng pagkain at tubig na nakalagay sa sisidlang-balat, at inilagay niya ito sa balikat ni Hagar. Pagkatapos, umalis si Hagar kasama ang kanyang anak. Naglakbay sila sa ilang ng Beersheba na hindi alam kung saan sila pupunta. 15 Nang naubos na ang kanilang tubig, iniwan niya ang anak niya sa ilalim ng isa sa mga mababang punongkahoy 16 at lumakad siya na may layong mga 100 metro mula sa kanyang anak. Doon siya umupo at umiiyak na nagsabi sa kanyang sarili, “Hindi ko matitiis na pagmasdan ang kamatayan ng anak ko.”
17 Ngayon, narinig ng Dios ang iyak ng bata. Kaya sinabi ng anghel ng Dios kay Hagar mula roon sa langit, “Ano ang gumugulo sa iyo Hagar? Huwag kang matakot; narinig ng Dios ang iyak ng anak mo. 18 Tumayo ka at ibangon mo ang bata, dahil gagawin kong malaking bansa ang kanyang mga lahi.” 19 Pagkatapos, may ipinakita ang Dios sa kanya na isang balon. Pumunta siya roon at nilagyan ng tubig ang sisidlan niya. Pagkatapos, pinainom niya ang kanyang anak.
20-21 Hindi pinabayaan ng Dios si Ishmael hanggang lumaki ito. Doon siya tumira sa ilang ng Paran at naging isa siyang mahusay na mamamana. Dumating ang panahon na pinapag-asawa siya ng kanyang ina sa isang Egipcio.
Ang Kasunduan nina Abraham at Abimelec
22 Nang panahong iyon,[a] pumunta si Abimelec kay Abraham kasama ang kumander ng mga sundalo niya na si Picol. Sinabi ni Abimelec kay Abraham, “Tinutulungan ka talaga ng Dios sa lahat ng ginagawa mo. 23 Kaya, mangako ka rito sa pangalan ng Dios na hindi mo ako pagtataksilan pati na ang aking mga lahi. Ipakita mo ang kabutihan mo sa akin at sa lugar na ito na tinitirhan mo ngayon, tulad din ng ipinakita kong kabutihan sa iyo.” 24 Sumagot si Abraham, “Isinusumpa ko.”
25 Pero dumaing si Abraham kay Abimelec tungkol sa balon na inagaw ng mga alipin niya. 26 Sinabi ni Abimelec, “Hindi ko alam kung sino ang gumawa niyan. Hindi mo naman ako sinabihan, at ngayon ko lang nalaman iyon.” 27 Kaya kumuha si Abraham ng mga tupa at baka, at ibinigay niya kay Abimelec. Pagkatapos, gumawa silang dalawa ng kasunduan. 28 Kumuha rin si Abraham ng pitong babaeng tupa at ibinukod ito. 29 Nagtanong si Abimelec, “Para kanino ang pitong babaeng tupa na ibinukod mo?” 30 Sumagot si Abraham, “Tanggapin mo ang pitong babaeng tupa na ito bilang katibayan na ako ang naghukay ng balong iyan.” 31 Dahil sa sumpaan nila, ang lugar na iyon ay tinawag na Beersheba.[b]
32 Pagkatapos ng sumpaan nila roon sa Beersheba, bumalik si Abimelec at si Picol sa lupain ng mga Filisteo. 33 Nagtanim si Abraham ng isang punongkahoy na tamarisko roon sa Beersheba at sumamba siya sa Panginoon, ang Dios na walang hanggan. 34 Nanirahan si Abraham sa lupain ng mga Filisteo sa mahabang panahon.

A Baby for Sarah
21 The Lord ·cared for [visited] Sarah as he had said and did for her what he had promised. 2 Sarah ·became pregnant [conceived] and gave birth to a son for Abraham in his old age. Everything happened at the time God had said it would. 3 Abraham named his son Isaac, the son Sarah gave birth to. 4 He circumcised [17:10] Isaac when he was eight days old as God had commanded.
5 Abraham was one hundred years old when his son Isaac was born. 6 And Sarah said, “God has made me laugh [C the name Isaac is related to a Hebrew word meaning “laugh”]. Everyone who hears about this will laugh ·with [or at] me. 7 No one thought that I would ·be able to have Abraham’s child [L suckle/nurse children], but even though Abraham is old I have given him a son.”
Hagar and Ishmael Leave
8 Isaac grew, and when he ·became old enough to eat food [was weaned], Abraham gave a great feast [L on the day of his weaning]. 9 But Sarah saw ·Ishmael [L the son of Hagar the Egyptian] ·making fun of Isaac [laughing; or playing]. 10 So Sarah said to Abraham, “·Throw [Drive] out this slave woman and her son. Her son should not inherit anything; my son Isaac should receive it all [Gal. 4:21—5:1].”
11 This ·troubled [distressed; upset] Abraham very much because Ishmael was also his son. 12 But God said to Abraham, “Don’t be ·troubled [distressed; upset] about the boy and the slave woman. Do ·whatever [all] Sarah tells you. ·The descendants I promised you will be from [L The seed will be named for you through] Isaac. 13 I will also make the ·descendants of Ishmael [L the son of your slave woman] into a great nation because he is your ·son [L seed], too.”
14 Early the next morning Abraham [L got up and] took some food and a ·leather bag full [skin] of water. He gave them to Hagar and sent her away. Carrying these things and her son [L on her shoulder], Hagar went and wandered [C the verb may imply moving aimlessly and without hope] in the ·desert [wilderness] of Beersheba [C an area in the northern part of the Negev, southern Canaan].
15 Later, when all the water was ·gone [finished] from the ·bag [skin], Hagar put her son under a bush. 16 Then she went a good way off, the distance of a bowshot, and sat down across from him. She thought, “My son will die, and I cannot watch this happen.” She sat there across from him and began to cry.
17 God heard the ·boy crying [L sound/voice of the boy], and God’s ·angel [messenger; 16:7] called to Hagar from heaven. He said, “What is wrong, Hagar? Don’t be afraid! God has heard the ·boy crying [L the sound/voice of the boy] there. 18 ·Help [Get up and lift] him up and take him by the hand. I will make ·his descendants [L him] into a great nation.” [C Ishmael is considered the ancestor of the Arab people.]
19 Then God [L opened her eyes and] showed Hagar a well of water. So she went to the well and filled her ·bag [skin] with water and gave the boy a drink.
20 God was with the boy as he grew up. Ishmael lived in the ·desert [wilderness] and became an archer. 21 He lived in the Desert of Paran [C a region in the eastern Sinai peninsula], and his mother found a wife for him in Egypt [C Hagar’s original homeland].
Abraham’s Bargain with Abimelech
22 ·Then [At that time] Abimelech came with Phicol, the commander of his army, and said to Abraham, “God is with you in everything you do. 23 So ·make a promise to me here before [swear to me by] God that you will ·be fair [L not deal falsely] with me and my children and my descendants. Be ·kind [loyal] to me and to this land where you have lived as a ·stranger [sojourner; wanderer; resident alien]—as ·kind [loyal] as I have been to you.”
24 And Abraham said, “I ·promise [swear].” 25 Then Abraham ·complained to [reproved; reproached] Abimelech about Abimelech’s servants who had seized a well of water.
26 But Abimelech said, “I don’t know who did this. You never told me [L and I have not heard] about this before today.”
27 Then Abraham gave Abimelech some sheep and cattle, and they made an ·agreement [covenant; treaty]. 28 Abraham also put seven female lambs ·in front of Abimelech [L apart by themselves].
29 Abimelech asked Abraham, “Why did you put these seven female lambs by themselves?”
30 Abraham answered, “Accept these lambs from ·me [L my hand] to ·prove that you believe [verify/witness that] I dug this well.”
31 So that place was called Beersheba [21:14; C meaning either “well of seven” or “well of promise”] because they ·made a promise to each other [swore an oath] there.
32 After Abraham and Abimelech ·made the agreement [L cut a covenant/treaty] at Beersheba, Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, went back to the land of the Philistines [C a region on the southern Mediterranean coast of Canaan].
33 Abraham planted a tamarisk tree at Beersheba and prayed to the Lord, the ·God who lives forever [eternal God]. 34 And Abraham lived as a ·stranger [wanderer; sojourner; resident alien] in the land of the Philistines for ·a long time [L many days].

The Birth of Isaac
21 Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah(A) as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised.(B) 2 Sarah became pregnant and bore a son(C) to Abraham in his old age,(D) at the very time God had promised him.(E) 3 Abraham gave the name Isaac[a](F) to the son Sarah bore him. 4 When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him,(G) as God commanded him. 5 Abraham was a hundred years old(H) when his son Isaac was born to him.
6 Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter,(I) and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” 7 And she added, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”(J)
Hagar and Ishmael Sent Away
8 The child grew and was weaned,(K) and on the day Isaac was weaned Abraham held a great feast. 9 But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham(L) was mocking,(M) 10 and she said to Abraham, “Get rid of that slave woman(N) and her son, for that woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac.”(O)
11 The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son.(P) 12 But God said to him, “Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring[b] will be reckoned.(Q) 13 I will make the son of the slave into a nation(R) also, because he is your offspring.”
14 Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar.(S) He set them on her shoulders and then sent her off with the boy. She went on her way and wandered in the Desert of Beersheba.(T)
15 When the water in the skin was gone, she put the boy under one of the bushes. 16 Then she went off and sat down about a bowshot away, for she thought, “I cannot watch the boy die.” And as she sat there, she[c] began to sob.(U)
17 God heard the boy crying,(V) and the angel of God(W) called to Hagar from heaven(X) and said to her, “What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid;(Y) God has heard the boy crying as he lies there. 18 Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.(Z)”
19 Then God opened her eyes(AA) and she saw a well of water.(AB) So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.
20 God was with the boy(AC) as he grew up. He lived in the desert and became an archer. 21 While he was living in the Desert of Paran,(AD) his mother got a wife for him(AE) from Egypt.
The Treaty at Beersheba
22 At that time Abimelek(AF) and Phicol the commander of his forces(AG) said to Abraham, “God is with you in everything you do.(AH) 23 Now swear(AI) to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or my descendants.(AJ) Show to me and the country where you now reside as a foreigner the same kindness I have shown to you.”(AK)
24 Abraham said, “I swear it.”
25 Then Abraham complained to Abimelek about a well of water that Abimelek’s servants had seized.(AL) 26 But Abimelek said, “I don’t know who has done this. You did not tell me, and I heard about it only today.”
27 So Abraham brought sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelek, and the two men made a treaty.(AM) 28 Abraham set apart seven ewe lambs from the flock, 29 and Abimelek asked Abraham, “What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs you have set apart by themselves?”
30 He replied, “Accept these seven lambs from my hand as a witness(AN) that I dug this well.(AO)”
31 So that place was called Beersheba,[d](AP) because the two men swore an oath(AQ) there.
32 After the treaty(AR) had been made at Beersheba,(AS) Abimelek and Phicol the commander of his forces(AT) returned to the land of the Philistines.(AU) 33 Abraham planted a tamarisk tree(AV) in Beersheba, and there he called on the name of the Lord,(AW) the Eternal God.(AX) 34 And Abraham stayed in the land of the Philistines(AY) for a long time.
