20 And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the south country, and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur, and sojourned in Gerar.
2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah.
3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man's wife.
4 But Abimelech had not come near her: and he said, Lord, wilt thou slay also a righteous nation?
5 Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this.
6 And God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her.
7 Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine.
8 Therefore Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ears: and the men were sore afraid.
9 Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? and what have I offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done.
10 And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What sawest thou, that thou hast done this thing?
11 And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife's sake.
12 And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.
13 And it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my father's house, that I said unto her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt shew unto me; at every place whither we shall come, say of me, He is my brother.
14 And Abimelech took sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and womenservants, and gave them unto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife.
15 And Abimelech said, Behold, my land is before thee: dwell where it pleaseth thee.
16 And unto Sarah he said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver: behold, he is to thee a covering of the eyes, unto all that are with thee, and with all other: thus she was reproved.
17 So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bare children.
18 For the Lord had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham's wife.

Abraham y Abimélec
20 Abraham partió desde allí en dirección a la región del Néguev y se quedó a vivir entre Cades y Sur. Mientras vivía en Guerar, 2 Abraham decía que Sara, su esposa, era su hermana. Entonces Abimélec, rey de Guerar, mandó buscar a Sara y la tomó por esposa. 3 Pero aquella noche Dios apareció a Abimélec en sueños y le dijo:
—Puedes darte por muerto a causa de la mujer que has tomado, porque ella es casada.
4 Pero como Abimélec todavía no había tenido relaciones sexuales con ella, contestó:
—Señor, ¿acaso vas a destruir a un pueblo inocente? 5 Como Abraham me dijo que ella era su hermana, y ella me lo confirmó, yo hice todo esto con la conciencia tranquila[a] y con las manos limpias.
6 —Sí, ya sé que has hecho todo esto con tu conciencia tranquila —le respondió Dios en el sueño—; por eso no te permití tocarla, para que no pecaras contra mí. 7 Pero ahora devuelve esa mujer a su esposo, pues él es profeta y va a interceder por ti para que vivas. Si no lo haces, debes saber que sin duda morirás junto con todos los tuyos.
8 En la madrugada del día siguiente, Abimélec se levantó y llamó a todos sus servidores para contarles en detalle lo que había ocurrido, y un gran temor se apoderó de ellos. 9 Entonces Abimélec llamó a Abraham y reclamó:
—¡Qué nos has hecho! ¿En qué te he ofendido, que has traído un pecado tan grande sobre mí y sobre mi reino? ¡Lo que me has hecho no tiene nombre! 10 ¿Qué pretendías conseguir con todo esto?
Al reclamo de Abimélec, 11 Abraham contestó:
—Yo pensé que en este lugar no había temor de Dios y que por causa de mi esposa me matarían. 12 Pero en realidad ella es mi hermana, porque es hija de mi padre aunque no de mi madre; y además es mi esposa. 13 Cuando Dios me ordenó dejar la casa de mi padre y andar errante, yo le dije a mi esposa: “Te pido que muestres tu amor por mí y que dondequiera que vayamos, digas siempre que soy tu hermano”.
14 Abimélec tomó entonces ovejas y vacas, esclavos y esclavas, y se los regaló a Abraham. Además, le devolvió a su esposa Sara 15 y dijo:
—Mira, ahí está todo mi territorio; quédate a vivir donde mejor te parezca.
16 Mientras a Sara le dijo:
—He dado a tu hermano mil piezas de plata, que servirán de compensación por todo lo que te ha pasado; así todos sabrán que eres inocente.
17 Entonces Abraham oró a Dios y Dios sanó a Abimélec; además, permitió que su esposa y sus siervas volvieran a tener hijos, 18 pues a causa de lo ocurrido con Sara, la esposa de Abraham, el Señor había hecho que todas las mujeres en la casa de Abimélec quedaran estériles.

Abraham and Abimelech
20 From there Abraham journeyed toward the territory of the Negeb and lived between (A)Kadesh and Shur; and he (B)sojourned in (C)Gerar. 2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, (D)“She is my sister.” And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah. 3 (E)But God came to Abimelech (F)in a dream by night and said to him, “Behold, you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man's wife.” 4 Now Abimelech had not approached her. So he said, (G)“Lord, will you kill an innocent people? 5 Did he not himself say to me, ‘She is my sister’? And she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ In the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my hands I have done this.” 6 Then God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know that you have done this in the integrity of your heart, and it was I who kept you from sinning (H)against me. Therefore I did not let you touch her. 7 Now then, return the man's wife, (I)for he is a prophet, so that he will pray for you, and you shall live. But if you do not return her, know that you shall surely die, you (J)and all who are yours.”
8 So Abimelech rose early in the morning and called all his servants and told them all these things. And the men were very much afraid. 9 Then Abimelech called Abraham and said to him, “What have you done to us? And how have I sinned against you, that you have brought on me and my kingdom a great sin? You have done to me things that ought not to be done.” 10 And Abimelech said to Abraham, “What did you see, that you did this thing?” 11 Abraham said, “I did it because I thought, (K)‘There is no fear of God at all in this place, and (L)they will kill me because of my wife.’ 12 Besides, (M)she is indeed my sister, the daughter of my father though not the daughter of my mother, and she became my wife. 13 And when (N)God caused me to wander from my father's house, I said to her, ‘This is the kindness you must do me: at every place to which we come, (O)say of me, “He is my brother.”’”
14 Then Abimelech (P)took sheep and oxen, and male servants and female servants, and gave them to Abraham, and returned Sarah his wife to him. 15 And Abimelech said, “Behold, (Q)my land is before you; dwell where it pleases you.” 16 To Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given (R)your brother a thousand pieces of silver. It is (S)a sign of your innocence in the eyes of all[a] who are with you, and before everyone you are vindicated.” 17 Then (T)Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech, and also healed his wife and female slaves so that they bore children. 18 For the Lord (U)had closed all the wombs of the house of Abimelech because of Sarah, Abraham's wife.
