God maakt alles (vervolg)

2 Zo maakte God de hemel en de aarde en alles wat daarop leeft en groeit. 2 Op de zevende dag was alles af en maakte God niets meer. Op de zevende dag rustte God uit van al zijn werk. 3 God zegende de zevende dag en maakte er een heilige dag van, omdat Hij toen uitrustte van het maken van de hemel en de aarde.

4 Zo zijn de hemel en de aarde ontstaan. Zo heeft de Heer God de hemel en de aarde gemaakt.

De tuin van Eden

5 In het begin waren er nog helemaal geen struiken op de aarde. Er groeide zelfs geen gras. Want de Heer God had het nog niet laten regenen. Er was ook nog niemand om de grond te bewerken. 6 Er steeg damp op uit de aarde. Die damp zorgde ervoor dat de grond vochtig bleef. 7 Toen de Heer God de hemel en de aarde maakte, maakte Hij ook de mens. Hij maakte hem van het stof van de aarde en blies de levensadem in zijn neus. Zo werd de mens een levend wezen.

8 Ook maakte de Heer God een tuin in Eden (= 'prachtig'), in het Oosten. Daar zette Hij de mens neer die Hij had gemaakt. 9 Ook zorgde de Heer God ervoor dat daar allerlei bomen groeiden. Prachtige bomen met heerlijke vruchten. Midden in de tuin stonden de boom van eeuwig leven en de boom van kennis van goed en kwaad.

10 In de tuin van Eden was de bron van een rivier, die de tuin vochtig hield. Deze rivier splitst zich in vier andere rivieren. 11 De eerste rivier heet de Pison. Hij stroomt om het hele land Havila heen, waar goud wordt gevonden. 12 Dat goud is heel zuiver. Verder vind je daar ook balsemhars en sardonyx.[a] 13 De tweede rivier is de Gihon. Hij stroomt om het hele land Ethiopië heen. 14 De derde rivier is de Hidekel.[b] Hij stroomt naar het oosten van Assur. De vierde rivier is de Eufraat.

15 De Heer God zette de mens in de tuin van Eden, om voor de tuin te zorgen. 16 Hij waarschuwde hem: "Je mag van alle bomen in de tuin eten zoveel je wil. 17 Maar je mag niet eten van de boom van kennis van goed en kwaad. Want op de dag dat je daarvan eet, zul je sterven."

God maakt de vrouw

18 En de Heer God zei: "Het is niet goed dat de mens alleen is. Ik zal iemand maken die bij hem past en die hem kan helpen."

19 De Heer had van het stof van de aarde alle dieren en alle vogels gemaakt. Daarna had Hij ze naar Adam (= 'mens' of 'stof') gebracht. Want Adam mocht alle dieren namen geven. En zoals Adam de dieren noemen zou, zo zouden ze voortaan heten. 20 Adam gaf aan al het vee, aan alle vogels en aan alle wilde dieren een naam. Maar hij zag er niemand bij die bij hem paste en die hem zou kunnen helpen. 21 Toen zorgde de Heer God ervoor dat Adam in een diepe slaap viel. En terwijl Adam sliep, nam Hij één van zijn ribben weg. Daarna maakte Hij die plaats weer dicht met vlees. 22 Van die rib maakte de Heer God een vrouw. Hij bracht haar naar Adam. 23 Toen zei Adam: "Dit is eindelijk iemand die bij mij past! Ze is van mijn eigen vlees en bloed gemaakt. Ik zal haar 'mannin' noemen, omdat ze uit de man gemaakt is."

24 Daarom zal een man weggaan bij zijn vader en moeder en van zijn vrouw houden en trouw aan haar zijn.[c] Vanaf dan zijn ze één geheel. 25 En Adam en zijn vrouw waren allebei naakt, maar ze schaamden zich niet.

Când Domnul Dumnezeu[c] a făcut pământul şi cerurile, 5 pe pământ nu era încă nici o plantă verde, iar iarba câmpului încă nu încolţise pentru că Domnul Dumnezeu încă nu dăduse ploaie pe pământ şi nu era nici un om ca să lucreze pământul, 6 ci doar un abur se ridica de pe pământ şi uda toată suprafaţa pământului. 7 Atunci Domnul Dumnezeu l-a modelat pe Adam[d] din ţărâna pământului şi a suflat în nările lui suflare de viaţă, iar Adam a devenit un suflet viu. 8 Domnul Dumnezeu a plantat o grădină în Eden, în răsărit. Acolo l-a pus pe Adam, omul pe care l-a modelat. 9 Domnul Dumnezeu a făcut să crească din ţărâna pământului tot felul de pomi care sunt plăcuţi la vedere şi buni de mâncat; de asemenea, în mijlocul grădinii se aflau pomul vieţii şi pomul cunoaşterii binelui şi răului. 10 Un râu curgea din Eden ca să ude grădina, iar de acolo se despărţea în patru braţe. 11 Numele primului braţ era Pişon; el curgea împrejurul[e] ţării Havila, unde era aur. 12 Aurul acelei ţări era bun; de asemenea, acolo se găseau bedelion[f] şi piatră de onix. 13 Numele celui de-al doilea braţ era Ghihon. El curgea împrejurul ţării Cuş[g]. 14 Numele celui de-al treilea braţ era Tigru; el curgea la răsăritul Asurului. Numele celui de-al patrulea braţ era Eufrat.

15 Domnul Dumnezeu l-a luat pe Adam şi l-a aşezat în grădina Eden, ca să o lucreze şi să o păzească. 16 Domnul Dumnezeu i-a poruncit lui Adam: „Poţi să mănânci din orice pom din grădină, 17 dar din pomul cunoaşterii binelui şi răului să nu mănânci, pentru că în ziua în care vei mânca din el vei muri negreşit!“

18 Apoi Domnul Dumnezeu a zis: „Nu este bine ca Adam să fie singur; îi voi face un ajutor potrivit.“ 19 Astfel, Domnul Dumnezeu a modelat din ţărână toate animalele câmpului şi toate păsările cerului şi le-a adus la Adam, ca să vadă ce nume le va da. Şi numele pe care Adam i l-a dat fiecărei vieţuitoare, acela a rămas. 20 Adam le-a dat nume tuturor vitelor, păsărilor cerului şi fiarelor câmpului; însă pentru el nu s-a găsit nici un ajutor potrivit. 21 Aşa că Domnul Dumnezeu a trimis un somn adânc peste Adam, iar acesta a adormit. Atunci Domnul a luat una dintre coastele lui şi a închis carnea la locul ei. 22 Şi, din coasta pe care a luat-o din Adam, Domnul Dumnezeu a făcut o femeie şi i-a adus-o lui Adam. 23 Atunci Adam a exclamat:

„În sfârşit, aceasta este os din oasele mele
    şi carne din carnea mea;
ea se va numi «femeie[h]»,
    pentru că a fost luată din bărbat.“

24 De aceea bărbatul îşi va lăsa tatăl şi mama şi se va uni cu soţia lui, iar ei vor deveni un singur trup.

25 Omul şi soţia lui erau goi, dar nu le era ruşine.

2 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.(A)

2 By the seventh day(B) God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.(C) 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy,(D) because on it he rested(E) from all the work of creating(F) that he had done.

Adam and Eve

4 This is the account(G) of the heavens and the earth when they were created,(H) when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

5 Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth[a] and no plant had yet sprung up,(I) for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth(J) and there was no one to work the ground, 6 but streams[b] came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. 7 Then the Lord God formed(K) a man[c](L) from the dust(M) of the ground(N) and breathed into his nostrils the breath(O) of life,(P) and the man became a living being.(Q)

8 Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden;(R) and there he put the man he had formed. 9 The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees(S) that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life(T) and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.(U)

10 A river(V) watering the garden flowed from Eden;(W) from there it was separated into four headwaters. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah,(X) where there is gold. 12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin[d](Y) and onyx are also there.) 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush.[e] 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris;(Z) it runs along the east side of Ashur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.(AA)

15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden(AB) to work it and take care of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;(AC) 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,(AD) for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”(AE)

18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”(AF)

19 Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals(AG) and all the birds in the sky.(AH) He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called(AI) each living creature,(AJ) that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.

But for Adam[f] no suitable helper(AK) was found. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep;(AL) and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs[g] and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib[h](AM) he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

23 The man said,

“This is now bone of my bones
    and flesh of my flesh;(AN)
she shall be called(AO) ‘woman,’
    for she was taken out of man.(AP)”

24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united(AQ) to his wife, and they become one flesh.(AR)

25 Adam and his wife were both naked,(AS) and they felt no shame.
