⁸ Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden;^(A) and there he put the man he had formed. ⁹ The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees^(B) that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life^(C) and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.^(D)

²² And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us,^(A) knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life^(B) and eat, and live forever.” ²³ So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden^(C) to work the ground^(D) from which he had been taken. ²⁴ After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side^[a] of the Garden of Eden^(E) cherubim^(F) and a flaming sword^(G) flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.^(H)

² down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life,^(A) bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.^(B)

¹⁴ “Blessed are those who wash their robes,^(A) that they may have the right to the tree of life^(B) and may go through the gates^(C) into the city.^(D)
