By the seventh day(A) God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.(B) Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy,(C) because on it he rested(D) from all the work of creating(E) that he had done.

Adam and Eve

This is the account(F) of the heavens and the earth when they were created,(G) when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth[a] and no plant had yet sprung up,(H) for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth(I) and there was no one to work the ground, but streams[b] came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. Then the Lord God formed(J) a man[c](K) from the dust(L) of the ground(M) and breathed into his nostrils the breath(N) of life,(O) and the man became a living being.(P)

Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden;(Q) and there he put the man he had formed. The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees(R) that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life(S) and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.(T)

10 A river(U) watering the garden flowed from Eden;(V) from there it was separated into four headwaters. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah,(W) where there is gold.

The Sabbath

12 Then the Lord said to Moses, 13 “Say to the Israelites, ‘You must observe my Sabbaths.(A) This will be a sign(B) between me and you for the generations to come,(C) so you may know that I am the Lord, who makes you holy.(D)

14 “‘Observe the Sabbath, because it is holy to you. Anyone who desecrates it is to be put to death;(E) those who do any work on that day must be cut off from their people. 15 For six days work(F) is to be done, but the seventh day is a day of sabbath rest,(G) holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day is to be put to death. 16 The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath,(H) celebrating it for the generations to come as a lasting covenant. 17 It will be a sign(I) between me and the Israelites forever, for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.(J)’”(K)

18 When the Lord finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai,(L) he gave him the two tablets of the covenant law, the tablets of stone(M) inscribed by the finger of God.(N)

11 I gave them my decrees and made known to them my laws, by which the person who obeys them will live.(A) 12 Also I gave them my Sabbaths(B) as a sign(C) between us,(D) so they would know that I the Lord made them holy.(E)

13 “‘Yet the people of Israel rebelled(F) against me in the wilderness. They did not follow my decrees but rejected my laws(G)—by which the person who obeys them will live—and they utterly desecrated my Sabbaths.(H) So I said I would pour out my wrath(I) on them and destroy(J) them in the wilderness.(K) 14 But for the sake of my name I did what would keep it from being profaned(L) in the eyes of the nations in whose sight I had brought them out.(M) 15 Also with uplifted hand I swore(N) to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them into the land I had given them—a land flowing with milk and honey, the most beautiful of all lands(O) 16 because they rejected my laws(P) and did not follow my decrees and desecrated my Sabbaths. For their hearts(Q) were devoted to their idols.(R) 17 Yet I looked on them with pity and did not destroy(S) them or put an end to them in the wilderness. 18 I said to their children in the wilderness, “Do not follow the statutes of your parents(T) or keep their laws or defile yourselves(U) with their idols. 19 I am the Lord your God;(V) follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.(W) 20 Keep my Sabbaths(X) holy, that they may be a sign(Y) between us. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God.(Z)

21 “‘But the children rebelled against me: They did not follow my decrees, they were not careful to keep my laws,(AA) of which I said, “The person who obeys them will live by them,” and they desecrated my Sabbaths. So I said I would pour out my wrath on them and spend my anger(AB) against them in the wilderness.(AC)
