The Temptation and Fall of Man(A)

Now (B)the serpent was (C)more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”

And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the (D)fruit of the trees of the garden;

22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?”

He said, (A)“I do not know. Am I (B)my brother’s keeper?”

10 And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood (C)cries out to Me from the ground. 11 So now (D)you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. A fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth.”

13 And Cain said to the Lord, “My [a]punishment is greater than I can bear! 14 Surely You have driven me out this day from the face of the ground; (E)I shall be (F)hidden from Your face; I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth, and it will happen that (G)anyone who finds me will kill me.”

15 And the Lord said to him, [b]“Therefore, whoever kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him (H)sevenfold.” And the Lord set a (I)mark on Cain, lest anyone finding him should kill him.

The Profane Fire of Nadab and Abihu

10 Then (A)Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, (B)each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered (C)profane fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them. So (D)fire went out from the Lord and devoured them, and they died before the Lord. And Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke, saying:

‘By those (E)who come near Me
I must be regarded as holy;
And before all the people
I must be glorified.’ ”

So Aaron held his peace.
