¹⁶ And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; ¹⁷ but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil ^(A)you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it ^(B)you^[a] shall surely ^(C)die.”

The Temptation and Fall of Man^(A)

3 Now ^(B)the serpent was ^(C)more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”

² And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the ^(D)fruit of the trees of the garden;

²² Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”— ²³ therefore the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden ^(A)to till the ground from which he was taken. ²⁴ So ^(B)He drove out the man; and He placed ^(C)cherubim ^(D)at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of ^(E)life.

⁹ Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?”

He said, ^(A)“I do not know. Am I ^(B)my brother’s keeper?”

¹⁰ And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood ^(C)cries out to Me from the ground. ¹¹ So now ^(D)you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. ¹² When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. A fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth.”

¹³ And Cain said to the Lord, “My ^[a]punishment is greater than I can bear! ¹⁴ Surely You have driven me out this day from the face of the ground; ^(E)I shall be ^(F)hidden from Your face; I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth, and it will happen that ^(G)anyone who finds me will kill me.”

¹⁵ And the Lord said to him, ^[b]“Therefore, whoever kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him ^(H)sevenfold.” And the Lord set a ^(I)mark on Cain, lest anyone finding him should kill him.

⁵ Then ^[a]the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every ^(A)intent^[b] of the thoughts of his heart was only evil ^[c]continually. ⁶ And ^(B)the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and ^(C)He was grieved in His ^(D)heart. ⁷ So the Lord said, “I will ^(E)destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.”

The Profane Fire of Nadab and Abihu

10 Then ^(A)Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, ^(B)each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered ^(C)profane fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them. ² So ^(D)fire went out from the Lord and devoured them, and they died before the Lord. ³ And Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke, saying:

So Aaron held his peace.

The Law of the Burnt Offering

⁸ Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ⁹ “Command Aaron and his sons, saying, ‘This is the ^(A)law of the burnt offering: The burnt offering shall be on the hearth upon the altar all night until morning, and the fire of the altar shall be kept burning on it. ^10 (B)And the priest shall put on his linen garment, and his linen trousers he shall put on his body, and take up the ashes of the burnt offering which the fire has consumed on the altar, and he shall put them ^(C)beside the altar. ¹¹ Then ^(D)he shall take off his garments, put on other garments, and carry the ashes outside the camp ^(E)to a clean place. ¹² And the fire on the altar shall be kept burning on it; it shall not be put out. And the priest shall burn wood on it every morning, and lay the burnt offering in order on it; and he shall burn on it ^(F)the fat of the peace offerings. ¹³ A fire shall always be burning on the ^(G)altar; it shall never go out.

⁸ Remember, I pray, the word that You commanded Your servant Moses, saying, ^(A)‘If you ^[a]are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations;
