³¹ Then the firstborn said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man in the land to sleep with us as is the custom of all the land. ³² Come, let’s get our father to drink wine so that we can sleep with him and preserve our father’s line.”

²³ She conceived and bore a son, and said, “God has taken away my shame.”^(A)

³ They said to me, “The remnant in the province,^(A) who survived the exile, are in great trouble and disgrace. Jerusalem’s wall has been broken down, and its gates have been burned down.”^(B)

²⁵ “The Lord has done this for me. He has looked with favor in these days to take away my disgrace^(A) among the people.”
