The Sign of the Covenant
17 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said to him, “I am God Almighty;[a] walk before me, and be blameless. 2 And I will make my covenant between me and you, and will make you exceedingly numerous.” 3 Then Abram fell on his face; and God said to him, 4 “As for me, this is my covenant with you: You shall be the ancestor of a multitude of nations. 5 No longer shall your name be Abram,[b] but your name shall be Abraham;[c] for I have made you the ancestor of a multitude of nations. 6 I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you. 7 I will establish my covenant between me and you, and your offspring after you throughout their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring[d] after you. 8 And I will give to you, and to your offspring after you, the land where you are now an alien, all the land of Canaan, for a perpetual holding; and I will be their God.”
9 God said to Abraham, “As for you, you shall keep my covenant, you and your offspring after you throughout their generations. 10 This is my covenant, which you shall keep, between me and you and your offspring after you: Every male among you shall be circumcised. 11 You shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you. 12 Throughout your generations every male among you shall be circumcised when he is eight days old, including the slave born in your house and the one bought with your money from any foreigner who is not of your offspring. 13 Both the slave born in your house and the one bought with your money must be circumcised. So shall my covenant be in your flesh an everlasting covenant. 14 Any uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin shall be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant.”

3 Allora Abramo si prostrò con la faccia a terra e Dio gli parlò, dicendo: 4 «Quanto a me, ecco il patto che faccio con te: tu diventerai padre di una moltitudine di nazioni; 5 non sarai più chiamato Abramo[a], ma il tuo nome sarà Abraamo[b], poiché io ti costituisco padre di una moltitudine di nazioni[c]. 6 Ti farò moltiplicare grandemente, ti farò divenire nazioni e da te usciranno dei re. 7 Stabilirò il mio patto fra me e te e i tuoi discendenti dopo di te, di generazione in generazione; sarà un patto eterno per il quale io sarò il Dio tuo e della tua discendenza dopo di te. 8 A te e alla tua discendenza dopo di te darò il paese dove abiti come straniero: tutto il paese di Canaan, in possesso perenne; e sarò loro Dio».
9 (B)Poi Dio disse ad Abraamo: «Quanto a te, tu osserverai il mio patto: tu e la tua discendenza dopo di te, di generazione in generazione. 10 Questo è il mio patto che voi osserverete, patto fra me e voi e la tua discendenza dopo di te: ogni maschio tra di voi sia circonciso. 11 Sarete circoncisi; questo sarà un segno del patto fra me e voi. 12 All’età di otto giorni, ogni maschio sarà circonciso tra di voi, di generazione in generazione: tanto quello nato in casa, quanto quello comprato con denaro da qualunque straniero e che non sia della tua discendenza. 13 Quello nato in casa tua e quello comprato con denaro dovrà essere circonciso; il mio patto nella vostra carne sarà un patto perenne. 14 L’incirconciso, il maschio che non sarà stato circonciso nella carne del suo prepuzio, sarà tolto via dalla sua gente: egli avrà violato il mio patto».

17 Als nun Abram 99 Jahre alt war, erschien ihm der Herr und sprach zu ihm: Ich bin Gott, der Allmächtige[a]. Wandle vor mir und sei untadelig[b]!
2 Und ich will meinen Bund schließen zwischen mir und dir und will dich über alle Maßen mehren!
3 Da fiel Abram auf sein Angesicht. Und Gott redete weiter mit ihm und sprach:
4 Siehe, ich bin der, welcher im Bund mit dir steht; und du sollst ein Vater vieler Völker werden.
5 Darum sollst du nicht mehr Abram[c] heißen, sondern Abraham[d] soll dein Name sein; denn ich habe dich zum Vater vieler Völker gemacht.
6 Und ich will dich sehr, sehr fruchtbar machen und will dich zu Völkern machen; auch Könige sollen von dir herkommen.
7 Und ich will meinen Bund aufrichten zwischen mir und dir und deinem Samen[e] nach dir von Geschlecht zu Geschlecht als einen ewigen Bund, dein Gott zu sein und der deines Samens nach dir.
8 Und ich will dir und deinem Samen nach dir das Land zum ewigen Besitz geben, in dem du ein Fremdling bist, nämlich das ganze Land Kanaan, und ich will ihr Gott sein.
9 Und Gott sprach weiter zu Abraham: So bewahre du nun meinen Bund, du und dein Same nach dir, von Geschlecht zu Geschlecht!
10 Das ist aber mein Bund, den ihr bewahren sollt, zwischen mir und euch und deinem Samen nach dir: Alles, was männlich ist unter euch, soll beschnitten werden.
11 Und ihr sollt am Fleisch eurer Vorhaut beschnitten werden. Das soll ein Zeichen des Bundes sein zwischen mir und euch.
12 Jedes Männliche von euren Nachkommen soll bei euch beschnitten werden, wenn es acht Tage alt ist, sei es im Haus geboren oder um Geld erkauft von irgendwelchen Fremden, die nicht von deinem Samen sind.
13 Was in deinem Haus geboren oder um Geld erkauft wird, soll unbedingt beschnitten werden. So soll mein Bund an eurem Fleisch sein, ein ewiger Bund.
14 Und ein unbeschnittener Mann, einer, der sich nicht beschneiden lässt am Fleisch seiner Vorhaut, dessen Seele soll ausgerottet werden aus seinem Volk, weil er meinen Bund gebrochen hat!

17 Quand Abram eut quatre-vingt-dix-neuf ans, l’Eternel lui apparut et lui dit : Je suis le Dieu tout-puissant. Mène ta vie sous mon regard et comporte-toi de manière intègre 2 afin que j’établisse mon alliance avec toi et que je multiplie ta descendance à l’extrême.
3 Abram se prosterna, la face contre terre, et Dieu ajouta : 4 Pour moi, voici quelle est mon alliance avec toi : Tu deviendras le père d’une multitude de peuples. 5 Désormais ton nom ne sera plus Abram (Père éminent), mais Abraham, car je ferai de toi le père d’une multitude de peuples[a]. 6 Je multiplierai à l’extrême le nombre de tes descendants et je te donnerai d’être à l’origine de divers peuples ; des rois même seront issus de toi. 7 Je maintiendrai pour toujours mon alliance avec toi, et avec ta descendance après toi, de génération en génération. En vertu de cette alliance, je serai ton Dieu et celui de ta descendance après toi. 8 Je te donnerai, ainsi qu’à ta descendance, ce pays de Canaan où tu vis maintenant en étranger. Il sera votre propriété pour toujours. Et je serai le Dieu de ta descendance[b].
9 Puis Dieu ajouta : De ton côté, tu respecteras les clauses de mon alliance, toi et ta descendance, de génération en génération. 10 Voici quelle est mon alliance avec vous et avec ta descendance, quels en sont les termes que vous devrez respecter : tous ceux qui sont de sexe masculin parmi vous seront circoncis[c]. 11 Vous porterez cette marque dans votre chair, et cela sera le signe de l’alliance entre moi et vous. 12 De génération en génération, tout garçon devra être circoncis à l’âge de huit jours. Cela s’applique aussi à tout garçon né dans ta maison, et aux étrangers qui auront été achetés comme esclaves, et qui ne sont pas de ta descendance. 13 Tous sans exception seront circoncis, qu’ils soient nés dans ta maison ou acquis à prix d’argent ; ainsi le signe de mon alliance sera gravé dans votre chair. C’est là une alliance à perpétuité. 14 Celui qui n’aura pas été circoncis sera retranché de son peuple parce qu’il n’aura pas respecté les clauses de mon alliance.
