여종 하갈
16 그런데 아브람의 아내 사래는 아이를 낳지 못하였다. 그 여자에게는 하갈이라고 하는 이집트 출신의 여종이 있었다. 2 사래가 아브람에게 말하였다. “주께서 저에게 아이를 주시지 않습니다. 그러니 제 여종과 잠자리를 같이하십시오. 어쩌면 제가 그 여종을 통하여 가문을 일으킬 수도 있겠습니다.”
아브람은 아내의 말을 옳게 여겼다. 3 그리하여 아브람이 가나안 땅에서 살아온 지 십 년이 지났을 때 그의 아내 사래가 이집트 출신의 여종 하갈을 아브람에게 주어 아내로 삼게 하였다. 4 아브람이 하갈과 잠자리를 같이하니 하갈이 아브람의 아기를 임신하였다.
하갈은 자기가 아브람의 아이를 임신한 것을 알았다. 그러자 여주인인 사래가 전처럼 받들어 모셔야 할 사람으로 보이지 않았다. 5 사래가 아브람에게 말하였다. “제가 지금 받고 있는 이 부당한 대우는 모두 당신 탓입니다. 제가 제 여종을 당신 팔에 안겨 드렸더니 그 애가 자신이 임신한 사실을 알고는 저를 전처럼 받들지 않습니다. 주께서 당신과 저 사이에 판단해 주시기를 바랍니다.”
6 아브람이 사래에게 말하였다. “하갈은 당신의 여종이니 당신 손에 달렸소. 그러니 당신 마음 내키는 대로 하시오.” 그러자 사래는 하갈을 구박하기 시작하였고 하갈은 사래를 피해 달아나고 말았다.
하갈의 아들 이스마엘
7 주의 천사가 광야에 있는 샘 옆에서 하갈을 찾아냈다. 그 샘은 술로 가는 길 옆에 있었다. 8 천사가 말하였다. “사래의 여종 하갈아, 네가 어디에서 왔느냐? 그리고 어디로 가고 있느냐?”
하갈이 대답하였다. “저는 저의 여주인 사래에게서 도망치고 있습니다.”
9 그러자 주의 천사가 하갈에게 말하였다. “너는 네 여주인에게로 돌아가서 네 여주인에게 복종하여라.” 10 천사는 거기에 덧붙여 말하였다. “내가 네 자손을 크게 불어나게 하겠다. 그들의 수가 너무 많아 셀 수 없게 될 것이다.”
11 주의 천사는 이어서 이렇게 말하였다.
“하갈아, 네가 지금 아이를 가졌으니
곧 아들을 낳을 것이다.
아이의 이름을 이스마엘[a]이라고 지어라.
네가 구박 받는다는 소리를
주께서 들으셨기 때문이다.
12 이스마엘은 들나귀처럼 자유분방한 사람이 될 것이다.
그는 모든 사람과 맞서 싸울 것이고
모든 사람은 그와 맞서 싸울 것이며[b]
그의 모든 형제들 가까이에 자리 잡고 살 것이다.”
13 하갈이 자기에게 말씀하신 하나님을 이렇게 불렀다. “당신은 나를 보시는 하나님[c]이십니다.” 그것은 그 여자가 이렇게 말하였기 때문이다. “이런 곳에서도 나를 보시고 나를 돌보시는 하나님을 내가 뵙다니!” 14 그리하여 그 샘이 브엘라해로이[d]라고 불리게 되었다. 그 샘은 지금도 가데스와 베렛 사이에 있다.
15 하갈이 아브람의 아들을 낳았다. 아브람은 하갈이 낳은 아들에게 이스마엘이라는 이름을 지어 주었다. 16 하갈이 아브람의 아들 이스마엘을 낳았을 때 아브람은 여든여섯 살이었다.

16 (A)Salaayi mukyala wa Ibulaamu yali teyamuzaalira mwana; 2 (B)Salaayi n’agamba Ibulaamu nti, “Laba Mukama tampadde mwana; weebake n’omuweereza wange, oboolyawo nnyinza okufuna abaana mu ye.”
Awo Ibulaamu n’awulira eddoboozi lya Salaayi.[a] 3 (C)Bw’atyo Ibulaamu bwe yali yaakamala emyaka kkumi mu nsi ya Kanani, Salaayi mukazi we n’addira Agali Omumisiri, omuweereza we n’amuwa Ibulaamu abeere mukazi we. 4 Ibulaamu ne yeegatta ne Agali, Agali n’aba olubuto.
Agali bwe yalaba ng’ali lubuto, n’anyooma Salaayi, mugole we. 5 (D)Salaayi n’agamba Ibulaamu nti, “Ekibi ekinkoleddwako kibeere ku ggwe. Nakuwa omuweereza wange mu kifuba kyo naye bw’alabye ng’ali lubuto n’annyooma. Mukama atulamule nze naawe!” 6 Naye Ibulaamu n’agamba Salaayi nti, “Laba, omuweereza wo ali mu buyinza bwo; mukole nga bw’oyagala.” Awo Salaayi natandika okubonyaabonya Agali; Agali n’adduka okuva w’ali.
Agali ne Isimayiri
7 (E)Malayika wa Mukama n’amusanga ku nsulo y’amazzi mu ddungu, ensulo y’amazzi eri ku kkubo eriraga e Ssuuli. 8 N’agamba nti, “Agali, omuweereza wa Salaayi, ovudde wa era ogenda wa?” N’amuddamu nti, “Nziruka mugole wange Salaayi.”
9 Malayika wa Mukama n’amugamba nti, “Ddayo eri mugole wo omugondere.” 10 (F)Era Malayika wa Mukama n’amugamba nti, “Ezadde lyo ndiryaza waleme kubeerawo asobola kulibala.”
11 (G)Ate malayika wa Mukama n’amugamba nti,
“Laba, olina omwana mu nda yo,
aliba wabulenzi,
olimutuuma Isimayiri,
kubanga Mukama ategedde okubonaabona kwo.
12 (H)Aliba ng’entulege,
anaalwananga na buli muntu
era na buli muntu anaalwananga naye,
era anaabanga mu bulabe
ne baganda be.”
13 (I)Awo n’akoowoola erinnya lya Mukama eyayogera naye, n’agamba nti, “Oli Katonda alaba”, kubanga yagamba nti, “Ndabidde ddala Katonda ne nsigala nga ndi mulamu nga maze okumulaba.” 14 Oluzzi kye lwava luyitibwa Beerirakayiro, luli wakati wa Kadesi ne Beredi.
15 (J)Awo Agali n’azaalira Ibulaamu omwana owoobulenzi, Ibulaamu n’atuuma mutabani wa Agali gwe yamuzaalira, erinnya Isimayiri. 16 Ibulaamu yali wa myaka kinaana mu mukaaga Agali bwe yamuzaalira Isimayiri.

Hagar and Ishmael
16 Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, (A)had borne him no children. And she had (B)an Egyptian maidservant whose name was (C)Hagar. 2 (D)So Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the Lord (E)has restrained me from bearing children. Please, (F)go in to my maid; perhaps I shall [a]obtain children by her.” And Abram (G)heeded the voice of Sarai. 3 Then Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar her maid, the Egyptian, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife, after Abram (H)had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan. 4 So he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress became (I)despised in her [b]eyes.
5 Then Sarai said to Abram, [c]“My wrong be upon you! I gave my maid into your embrace; and when she saw that she had conceived, I became despised in her eyes. (J)The Lord judge between you and me.”
6 (K)So Abram said to Sarai, “Indeed your maid is in your hand; do to her as you please.” And when Sarai dealt harshly with her, (L)she fled from her presence.
7 Now the (M)Angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, (N)by the spring on the way to (O)Shur. 8 And He said, “Hagar, Sarai’s maid, where have you come from, and where are you going?”
She said, “I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai.”
9 The Angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress, and (P)submit yourself under her hand.” 10 Then the Angel of the Lord said to her, (Q)“I will multiply your descendants exceedingly, so that they shall not be counted for multitude.” 11 And the Angel of the Lord said to her:
“Behold, you are with child,
(R)And you shall bear a son.
You shall call his name [d]Ishmael,
Because the Lord has heard your affliction.
12 (S)He shall be a wild man;
His hand shall be against every man,
And every man’s hand against him.
(T)And he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.”
13 Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, You-Are-[e]the-God-Who-Sees; for she said, “Have I also here [f]seen Him (U)who sees me?” 14 Therefore the well was called (V)Beer Lahai Roi;[g] observe, it is (W)between Kadesh and Bered.
15 So (X)Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram named his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. 16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
