Hagar and Ishmael
16 Now Sarai,(A) Abram’s wife, had borne him no children.(B) But she had an Egyptian slave(C) named Hagar;(D) 2 so she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children.(E) Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.”(F)
Abram agreed to what Sarai said. 3 So after Abram had been living in Canaan(G) ten years,(H) Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. 4 He slept with Hagar,(I) and she conceived.
When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.(J) 5 Then Sarai said to Abram, “You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the Lord judge between you and me.”(K)
6 “Your slave is in your hands,(L)” Abram said. “Do with her whatever you think best.” Then Sarai mistreated(M) Hagar; so she fled from her.
7 The angel of the Lord(N) found Hagar near a spring(O) in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur.(P) 8 And he said, “Hagar,(Q) slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?”(R)
“I’m running away from my mistress Sarai,” she answered.
9 Then the angel of the Lord told her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her.” 10 The angel added, “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.”(S)
11 The angel of the Lord(T) also said to her:
“You are now pregnant
and you will give birth to a son.(U)
You shall name him(V) Ishmael,[a](W)
for the Lord has heard of your misery.(X)
12 He will be a wild donkey(Y) of a man;
his hand will be against everyone
and everyone’s hand against him,
and he will live in hostility
toward[b] all his brothers.(Z)”
13 She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,(AA)” for she said, “I have now seen[c] the One who sees me.”(AB) 14 That is why the well(AC) was called Beer Lahai Roi[d];(AD) it is still there, between Kadesh(AE) and Bered.
15 So Hagar(AF) bore Abram a son,(AG) and Abram gave the name Ishmael(AH) to the son she had borne. 16 Abram was eighty-six years old(AI) when Hagar bore him Ishmael.

16 Now Abram’s wife Sarai had not borne a child for him. She had an Egyptian servant girl whose name was Hagar. 2 So Sarai told Abram, “You are well aware that the Lord has prevented me from giving birth to a child. Go have sex with my servant, so that I may possibly bear a son[a] through her.”
Abram listened to Sarai’s suggestion, 3 so Abram’s wife Sarai took her Egyptian servant, Hagar, and gave her as a wife to her husband Abram. This took place[b] ten years after Abram had settled in the land of Canaan. 4 He had sex with Hagar, and she became pregnant. When she realized that she was pregnant, she looked with contempt on her mistress.
5 Then Sarai told Abram, “My suffering is your fault! I gave you my servant so you could have sex with her,[c] and when she discovered that she was pregnant, she looked on me with contempt. May the Lord judge between you and me!”
6 Abram answered Sarai, “Look, your servant is under your control, so do to her as you wish.”[d] So Sarai dealt so harshly with Hagar[e] that she ran away from Sarai.[f]
7 The angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the desert on the road to Shur. 8 “Hagar, servant of Sarai,” he asked, “Where are you coming from and where are you going?”
She answered, “I am running away from my mistress Sarai.”
9 The angel of the Lord told her, “You must go back to your mistress and submit to her authority.” 10 The angel of the Lord also told her, “I will greatly multiply your offspring, who will be too many to count.
11 “Look, you are pregnant and will give birth to a son,” the angel of the Lord continued to say to her. “You will name him Ishmael,[g] because the Lord has heard your cry of[h] misery. 12 As a man, he’ll be uncontrollable.[i] He’ll[j] be against everyone, everyone will be against him,[k]and he’ll live in conflict with[l] all of his relatives.”
13 So she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are ‘God who sees,’ because I have truly seen the one who looks after me.”
14 That’s why the spring was called, “The Well of the Living One who Looks after Me.” It was between Kadesh and Bered.
15 Hagar eventually gave birth to Abram’s son. Abram named his son whom Hagar bore Ishmael. 16 Abram was 86 years old when Hagar gave birth to Ishmael for Abram.

Sarai şi Agar
16 Sarai, nevasta lui Avram, nu-i născuse(A) deloc copii. Ea avea o roabă(B) egipteancă, numită Agar(C). 2 Şi Sarai a zis(D) lui Avram: „Iată, Domnul m-a făcut(E) stearpă; intră(F), te rog, la roaba mea; poate că voi avea copii de la ea.” Avram a ascultat(G) cele spuse de Sarai. 3 Atunci, Sarai, nevasta lui Avram, a luat pe egipteanca Agar, roaba ei, şi a dat-o de nevastă bărbatului său, Avram, după ce Avram locuise(H) ca străin zece ani în ţara Canaan. 4 El a intrat la Agar, şi ea a rămas însărcinată. Când s-a văzut ea însărcinată, a privit cu dispreţ(I) pe stăpână-sa. 5 Şi Sarai a zis lui Avram: „Asupra ta să cadă batjocura aceasta, care mi se face! Eu însumi ţi-am dat în braţe pe roaba mea, şi ea, când a văzut că a rămas însărcinată, m-a privit cu dispreţ. Să judece(J) Domnul între mine şi tine!” 6 Avram(K) a răspuns Saraiei: „Iată(L), roaba ta este în mâna ta; fă-i ce-ţi place!” Atunci, Sarai s-a purtat rău cu ea, şi Agar(M) a fugit de ea.

7 Îngerul Domnului a găsit-o lângă un izvor de apă în pustie, şi anume lângă izvorul(N) care este pe drumul ce duce la Şur(O). 8 El a zis: „Agar, roaba Saraiei, de unde vii şi unde te duci?” Ea a răspuns: „Fug de stăpâna mea Sarai.” 9 Îngerul Domnului i-a zis: „Întoarce-te la stăpână-ta şi supune-te(P) sub mâna ei.” 10 Îngerul Domnului i-a zis: „Îţi voi înmulţi(Q) foarte mult sămânţa şi ea va fi atât de multă la număr, că nu va putea fi numărată.” 11 Îngerul Domnului i-a zis: „Iată, acum eşti însărcinată şi vei naşte un fiu, căruia îi vei pune numele(R) Ismael[a], căci Domnul a auzit mâhnirea ta. 12 El va fi ca(S) un măgar sălbatic printre oameni; mâna lui va fi împotriva tuturor oamenilor, şi mâna tuturor oamenilor va fi împotriva lui şi va locui în(T) faţa tuturor fraţilor lui.” 13 Ea a numit Numele Domnului care-i vorbise: „Tu eşti Dumnezeul care mă vede[b]!” Căci a zis ea: „Cu adevărat, am văzut(U) aici spatele Celui ce m-a văzut!” 14 De aceea, fântâna aceea s-a numit „Fântâna(V) Celui viu care mă vede[c]”; ea este între(W) Cades şi Bared. 15 Agar(X) a născut lui Avram un fiu şi Avram a pus fiului pe care i l-a născut Agar numele Ismael(Y). 16 Avram era de optzeci şi şase de ani când i-a născut Agar pe Ismael.

2 And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the Lord hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.
3 And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.
4 And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.
5 And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the Lord judge between me and thee.
6 But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thine hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.
7 And the angel of the Lord found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.
8 And he said, Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.
9 And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.
10 And the angel of the Lord said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.
11 And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Behold, thou art with child and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the Lord hath heard thy affliction.
12 And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.
13 And she called the name of the Lord that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?
14 Wherefore the well was called Beerlahairoi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
15 And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son's name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael.
16 And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram.
