Sarai and Hagar
16 Abram's wife, Sarai, had not given birth to any children. She had an Egyptian servant. The servant's name was Hagar. 2 Sarai said to Abram, ‘The Lord has not let me have any children. Go and sleep with my servant. Then if she gives birth, her children will be my family.’ Abram agreed to do this.[a]
3 Abram had now been living in Canaan for ten years. Sarai gave her Egyptian servant, Hagar, to him. She became like another wife for Abram.
4 Abram had sex with Hagar and she became pregnant. When Hagar knew that she was pregnant, she no longer respected Sarai.
5 Then Sarai said to Abram, ‘It is because of you that Hagar is now insulting me. I gave her to you so that you could have sex with her. Now she is pregnant and she does not respect me. The Lord will decide who is right, you or me.’
6 Abram said to Sarai, ‘Hagar is your servant and you have authority over her. Do to her whatever you think is right.’ Then Sarai caused trouble for Hagar. So Hagar ran away from Sarai.
7 The angel of the Lord found Hagar. She was by a spring of water in the desert. The spring was near the road to Shur. 8 The angel said, ‘Sarai's servant, Hagar, where have you come from? Where are you going?’ Hagar replied, ‘I am running away from Sarai. I am her servant.’
9 The angel of the Lord told Hagar, ‘Go back to Sarai. You are her servant and you must obey her.’
10 The angel also said, ‘I will make the number of your descendants become very many. They will be too many for people to count.’
11 The angel of the Lord said to Hagar,
‘Now you are pregnant and you will give birth to a son.
When you cried in pain, the Lord heard you,
so you must give your son the name “Ishmael”.[b]
12 Like a wild donkey, nobody will be able to rule him.
He will fight against everyone, and everyone will fight against him.
He will think that everyone is his enemy.
He will keep away from his brothers.’
13 When Hagar heard what the angel said, she said to herself, ‘I have seen the God who sees me!’ So she called the Lord ‘The God who sees me.’ 14 That is why they called the well in that place ‘Beer Lahai Roi’.[c] The well is between Kadesh and Bered.
15 After some time Hagar gave birth to a son. Abram was his father. Abram gave his son the name ‘Ishmael’. 16 Abram was 86 years old when Hagar gave birth to Ishmael.

16 亞伯蘭的妻子撒萊沒有生育，她有個婢女名叫夏甲，是埃及人。 2 撒萊對亞伯蘭說：「耶和華不讓我生育，請你與我的婢女同房，也許我可以藉著她生子立後。」亞伯蘭同意了撒萊的話。 3 於是，撒萊把埃及婢女夏甲給亞伯蘭做妾。那時亞伯蘭已經在迦南住了十年。 4 亞伯蘭與夏甲同房，她就懷了孕。夏甲知道自己懷了孕，就輕視女主人撒萊。 5 撒萊對亞伯蘭說：「我受氣都是因為你。我把婢女放在你懷裡，她仗著自己懷了孕就輕視我，願耶和華在你我之間主持公道。」 6 亞伯蘭對撒萊說：「婢女在你手中，隨你處置。」於是，撒萊苦待夏甲，夏甲就逃走了。
7 耶和華的天使在曠野中通往書珥之路的水泉旁找到了夏甲， 8 便問她：「撒萊的婢女夏甲，你從哪裡來？要到哪裡去？」她回答說：「我是從女主人撒萊那裡逃出來的。」 9 耶和華的天使對她說：「你要回到女主人那裡順服她。」 10 又說：「我必使你的後代多得不可勝數。」 11 接著又說：「你現在懷了孕，將來會生一個男孩，你要給他取名叫以實瑪利[a]，因為耶和華已經聽見你痛苦的哀聲。 12 這孩子性情必像野驢，他要跟人作對，人也要跟他作對。他必與他所有的弟兄為敵。」 13 夏甲稱對她說話的耶和華為「看顧人的上帝」，她說：「我竟然在這裡看見了看顧我的上帝。」 14 因此，她稱加低斯和巴列之間的那口井為庇耳·拉海·萊[b]。
15 後來夏甲為亞伯蘭生了一個兒子，亞伯蘭給他取名叫以實瑪利。 16 夏甲生以實瑪利時，亞伯蘭八十六歲。

6 Abramu anati, “Wantchito wakoyu ali mʼmanja mwako. Chita naye chilichonse chimene ukuganiza kuti ndi chokukomera.” Tsono Sarai anazunza Hagara mpaka anathawa.
7 Mngelo wa Yehova anamupeza Hagara pafupi ndi chitsime mʼchipululu. Chinali chitsime chimene chili mʼmphepete mwa msewu wopita ku Suri. 8 Ndipo mngeloyo anati, “Hagara, iwe wantchito wa Sarai, ukuchokera kuti ndipo ukupita kuti?”
Iye anayankha, “Ndikuthawa mbuye wanga Sarai.”
9 Mngelo wa Yehova anamuwuza kuti, “Bwerera kwa mbuye wako ndipo ukamugonjere. 10 Ndidzakupatsa zidzukulu zambiri zoti munthu sangaziwerenge.”
11 Mngelo wa Yehova uja anamuwuzanso kuti,
“Ndiwe woyembekezera
ndipo udzabala mwana wamwamuna.
Udzamutcha dzina lake Ismaeli,
pakuti Yehova wamva kulira chifukwa cha kuzunzika kwako.
12 Iye adzakhala munthu wa khalidwe ngati mʼmbulu wamisala;
adzadana ndi aliyense
ndipo anthu onse adzadana naye,
adzakhala mwaudani pakati pa abale ake
onse.”
13 Hagara anatcha Yehova amene anamuyankhula uja dzina loti: “Ndinu Mulungu amene mumandiona,” popeza anati, “Ndakumana ndi Yehova atatha kundikomera mtima.” 14 Nʼchifukwa chake chitsime chija chimene chili pakati pa Kadesi ndi Beredi chinatchedwa Beeri-lahai-roi.
15 Tsono Hagara anamuberekera Abramu mwana wamwamuna ndipo Abramu anamutcha mwanayo Ismaeli. 16 Pamene Hagara anamubalira Ismaeli nʼkuti Abramuyo ali ndi zaka 86.
