Abram Promised a Son

15 After these things ^(A)the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying,

² But Abram said, “Lord ^[b]God, what will You give me, since I ^[c]am childless, and the ^[d]heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” ³ Abram also said, “^[e]Since You have given me no ^[f]son, ^[g]one who has been ^(E)born in my house is my heir.” ⁴ Then behold, the word of the Lord came to him, saying, “This man will not be your heir; ^(F)but one who will come from your own ^[h]body shall be your heir.” ⁵ And He took him outside and said, “Now look toward the heavens and ^(G)count the stars, if you are able to count them.” And He said to him, “^(H)So shall your ^[i]descendants be.” ^6 (I)Then he believed in the Lord; and He ^[j]credited it to him as righteousness.

¹³ Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Your servants to whom You ^(A)swore by Yourself, and said to them, ‘I will ^(B)multiply your ^[a]descendants as the stars of the heavens, and ^(C)all this land of which I have spoken I will give to your ^[b]descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.’”

^37 (A)Because He loved your fathers, He chose ^[a]their descendants after them. And He ^[b](B)personally brought you from Egypt by His great power,

⁶ For you are ^(A)a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be ^(B)a people for His personal possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the ^[a]earth.

⁷ “^(C)The Lord did not ^[b]make you His beloved nor choose you because you were greater in number than any of the peoples, since you were the fewest of all peoples, ⁸ but because the Lord loved you and kept the ^(D)oath which He swore to your forefathers, ^(E)the Lord brought you out by a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of ^[c]slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. ⁹ Know therefore that the Lord your God, ^(F)He is God, ^(G)the faithful God, ^(H)who keeps ^[d]His covenant and ^[e]His faithfulness to a thousand generations for those who ^(I)love Him and keep His commandments;

⁹ But you are ^(A)a chosen people, a royal ^(B)priesthood, a ^(C)holy nation, ^(D)a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you ^(E)out of darkness into His marvelous light;
