¹⁸ So Abram went to live near the great trees of Mamre^(A) at Hebron,^(B) where he pitched his tents. There he built an altar to the Lord.^(C)

² She died at Kiriath Arba^(A) (that is, Hebron)^(B) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep over her.^(C)

¹⁹ Afterward Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave in the field of Machpelah^(A) near Mamre (which is at Hebron^(B)) in the land of Canaan.^(C)

³¹ and Hebron;^(A) and to those in all the other places where he and his men had roamed.

David Anointed King Over Judah

2 In the course of time, David inquired^(A) of the Lord. “Shall I go up to one of the towns of Judah?” he asked.

The Lord said, “Go up.”

David asked, “Where shall I go?”

“To Hebron,”^(B) the Lord answered.

³ David also took the men who were with him,^(A) each with his family, and they settled in Hebron^(B) and its towns.

¹¹ The length of time David was king in Hebron over Judah was seven years and six months.^(A)
