⁹ Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.”^(A)

¹⁰ Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain^(B) of the Jordan toward Zoar^(C) was well watered, like the garden of the Lord,^(D) like the land of Egypt.^(E) (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom^(F) and Gomorrah.)^{(G) 11} So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company: ¹² Abram lived in the land of Canaan,^(H) while Lot^(I) lived among the cities of the plain^(J) and pitched his tents near Sodom.^{(K) 13} Now the people of Sodom^(L) were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.^(M)

¹⁴ The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west.^{(N) 15} All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring^[a] forever.^{(O) 16} I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted.^{(P) 17} Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land,^(Q) for I am giving it to you.”^(R)

¹⁰ The land you are entering to take over is not like the land of Egypt,^(A) from which you have come, where you planted your seed and irrigated it by foot as in a vegetable garden. ¹¹ But the land you are crossing the Jordan to take possession of is a land of mountains and valleys^(B) that drinks rain from heaven.^{(C) 12} It is a land the Lord your God cares for; the eyes^(D) of the Lord your God are continually on it from the beginning of the year to its end.

¹³ So if you faithfully obey^(E) the commands I am giving you today—to love^(F) the Lord your God and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul^(G)— ¹⁴ then I will send rain^(H) on your land in its season, both autumn and spring rains,^(I) so that you may gather in your grain, new wine and olive oil.
