De lijst met de namen van de volken.
10 Dit is de familie van Sem, Cham en Jafet, de zonen van Noach. Dit zijn de zonen die zij na de overstroming kregen.
2 De zonen van Jafet waren: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Mesech en Tiras.
3 De zonen van Gomer waren: Askenaz, Rifat en Togarma.
4 De zonen van Javan waren: Elisa en Tarsis. Ook is hij de voorvader van de Kittieten en de Dodanieten. 5 Dat zijn de volken die op de eilanden en langs de kust gingen wonen. Ze woonden in verschillende gebieden, verdeeld volgens hun stammen en families, met allemaal een eigen taal.
6 De zonen van Cham waren: Kush, Mizraïm, Put en Kanaän.
7 De zonen van Kush waren: Seba, Havila, Sabta, Raëma en Sabtecha.
De zonen van Raëma waren: Scheba en Dedan. 8 Kush kreeg een zoon: Nimrod. Nimrod was de eerste grote heerser op aarde. 9 Hij was een geweldig jager in de ogen van de Heer. Daarom werd er voortaan wel gezegd van iemand die net zó was: "Hij is een Nimrod in de ogen van de Heer." 10 De belangrijkste steden van zijn koninkrijk waren Babel, Erech, Akkad en Kalne, in het land Sinear. 11 Vanuit het land Sinear trok hij naar Assur en bouwde Ninevé, Réhobot, Ir, Kala en Resen. 12 Resen was een grote stad tussen Ninevé en Kala.
13 Mizraïm is de voorvader van de Ludieten, de Anamieten, de Lehabieten, de Naftuhieten, 14 de Patrusieten, de Kasluhieten (waaruit de Filistijnen zijn ontstaan) en de Kaftorieten.
15 Kanaän werd vader van Sidon, zijn eerste zoon, en Het. 16 Hij is de voorvader van de Jebusieten, de Amorieten, de Girgasieten, 17 de Hevieten, de Arkieten, de Sinieten, de Arvadieten, de Zemarieten en de Hamatieten. 18 Daarna verspreidden de verschillende families van Kanaän zich. 19 De grens van het gebied van de Kanaänieten liep van Sidon in de richting van Gerar tot Gaza, in de richting van Sodom, Gomorra, Adama en Zeboïm tot Lasa.
20 Dit waren de zonen van Cham. Ze woonden in verschillende gebieden, verdeeld volgens hun stammen en families, met allemaal een eigen taal.
21 Ook Sem, de broer van Jafet, kreeg zonen. Sem was de oudste zoon van Noach. Sem was de overgrootvader van Heber. 22 De zonen van Sem waren: Elam, Assur, Arpachsad, Lud en Aram.
23 De zonen van Aram waren: Uz, Hul, Geter en Mas.
24 Arpachsad kreeg een zoon: Sela. Sela kreeg een zoon: Heber.
25 Heber kreeg twee zonen: de ene heette Peleg (= 'scheiding'), want in zijn tijd werd de aarde gedeeld. De andere zoon, de broer van Peleg, heette Joktan.
26 De zonen van Joktan waren: Almodad, Selef, Hazarmavet, Jera, 27 Hadoram, Uzal, Dikla, 28 Obal, Abimaël, Scheba, 29 Ofir, Havila en Jobab. Dat waren de zonen van Joktan. 30 Ze woonden vanaf Mescha naar het oosten, in de richting van de bergen van Sefar.
31 Dit waren de zonen van Sem. Ze woonden in verschillende gebieden, verdeeld volgens hun stammen en families, met allemaal een eigen taal.
32 Dit zijn de families van de zonen van Noach. Deze families werden volken, die zich na de grote overstroming over de aarde verspreidden.
De toren van Babel
11 In het begin was er op de hele aarde maar één taal. 2 Toen de mensen naar het oosten trokken, kwamen ze bij een vlakte in het land Sinear. Daar gingen ze wonen. 3 Ze zeiden tegen elkaar: "Laten we van klei bouwstenen bakken." Ze bouwden ermee en metselden ze met asfalt op elkaar. 4 Toen zeiden ze: "Laten we een stad bouwen met een toren waarvan de top tot in de hemel komt. Laten we er zo voor zorgen dat iedereen ontzag voor ons heeft. Dan zullen we niet over de hele aarde verspreid raken."
5 Toen kwam de Heer vanuit de hemel naar de aarde. Hij wilde de stad en de toren bekijken die de mensen aan het bouwen waren. 6 Hij zei: "Ze zijn nu één volk, met één taal. Niets zal onmogelijk voor hen zijn. Dit is nog maar het begin van al hun plannen. Daar zal Ik een eind aan maken. 7 Laten We naar beneden gaan en hun taal in de war maken, zodat ze elkaar niet meer begrijpen." 8 Zo verspreidde de Heer hen van daar over de hele aarde. Ze stopten met de bouw van de stad. 9 De mensen noemden de stad Babel (= 'verwarring') omdat de Heer daar de taal van de mensen verward heeft. Zo verspreidde de Heer hen vanuit die stad over de hele aarde.
De familie van Sem
10 Dit is de familie van Sem.
Toen Sem 100 jaar was, kreeg hij een zoon: Arpachsad. Dat was twee jaar na de overstroming. 11 Sem leefde nog 500 jaar nadat Arpachsad was geboren en kreeg nog meer zonen en dochters.
12 Toen Arpachsad 35 jaar was, kreeg hij een zoon: Sela. 13 Arpachsad leefde nog 403 jaar nadat Sela was geboren en kreeg nog meer zonen en dochters.
14 Toen Sela 30 jaar was, kreeg hij een zoon: Heber. 15 Sela leefde nog 403 jaar nadat Heber was geboren en kreeg nog meer zonen en dochters.
16 Toen Heber 34 jaar was, kreeg hij een zoon: Peleg. 17 Heber leefde nog 430 jaar nadat Peleg was geboren en kreeg nog meer zonen en dochters.
18 Toen Peleg 30 jaar was, kreeg hij een zoon: Rehu. 19 Peleg leefde nog 209 jaar nadat Rehu was geboren en kreeg nog meer zonen en dochters.
20 Toen Rehu 32 jaar was, kreeg hij een zoon: Serug. 21 Rehu leefde nog 207 jaar nadat Serug was geboren en kreeg nog meer zonen en dochters.
22 Toen Serug 30 jaar was, kreeg hij een zoon: Nahor. 23 Serug leefde nog 200 jaar nadat Nahor was geboren en kreeg nog meer zonen en dochters.
24 Toen Nahor 29 jaar was, kreeg hij een zoon: Terach. 25 Nahor leefde nog 119 jaar nadat Terach was geboren en kreeg nog meer zonen en dochters.
26 Toen Terach 70 jaar was, kreeg hij drie zonen: Abram, Nahor en Haran.
De familie van Terach
27 Dit is de familie van Terach. Terach kreeg drie zonen: Abram, Nahor en Haran. Haran kreeg een zoon: Lot. 28 Haran stierf toen zijn vader Terach nog leefde. Hij stierf in Ur in het land van de Chaldeeën, waar hij ook geboren was. 29 Abram en Nahor trouwden. Abrams vrouw heette Saraï en Nahors vrouw heette Milka. Milka was een dochter van Haran. Haran had twee dochters: Milka en Jiska. 30 Saraï kon geen kinderen krijgen.
31 Terach vertrok met zijn zoon Abram, zijn kleinzoon Lot (de zoon van Haran) en Saraï, de vrouw van Abram, uit Ur in het land van de Chaldeeën. Hij wilde met hen naar het land Kanaän gaan. Maar toen ze in Haran kwamen, bleven ze daar. 32 Terach stierf in Haran. Hij was toen 205 jaar.
Abram wordt door God geroepen
12 Toen zei de Heer tegen Abram: "Vertrek uit je land. Verlaat je familie en het huis van je vader. Ga naar het land dat Ik je zal wijzen. 2 Ik zal een groot volk van je maken. Ik zal je zegenen en je naam zal overal bekend worden. En je zal tot een zegen zijn. 3 Als mensen jou goed behandelen, zal Ik goed voor hén zijn. En als mensen jou slecht behandelen, zal Ik slecht voor hén zijn. En door de zegen die op jou is, zullen alle volken van de aarde gezegend worden."
4 Toen vertrok Abram, zoals de Heer tegen hem had gezegd. Zijn neef Lot ging met hem mee. Abram was 75 jaar toen hij uit Haran wegging. 5 Hij vertrok met zijn vrouw Saraï en Lot, de zoon van zijn broer, en met alles wat zij bezaten, al hun vee, en alle slaven die ze in Haran gekocht hadden. Ze trokken naar het land Kanaän. 6 Toen ze daar aankwamen, trok Abram verder door het land tot aan de plaats Sichem, bij de eikenbomen van Moré. In die tijd woonden de Kanaänieten in dat land.
7 Toen kwam de Heer bij Abram en zei: "Ik ga dit land later aan jouw familie geven." Abram bouwde een altaar voor de Heer op de plaats waar Hij naar hem toe gekomen was. 8 Toen brak hij zijn tenten af en trok in zuidelijke richting naar de bergen aan de oostkant van Bet-El. Daar zette hij zijn tenten weer op, tussen Bet-El in het westen en Ai in het oosten. Hij bouwde er een altaar voor de Heer en aanbad daar de Heer. 9 Van daar trok Abram steeds verder naar het zuiden.
Abram in Egypte
10 Toen kwam er hongersnood in Kanaän. Daarom trok Abram naar Egypte. Daar wilde hij blijven wonen zolang er in Kanaän hongersnood was. Want het was een heel zware hongersnood. 11 Toen hij bij de grens van Egypte kwam, zei hij tegen zijn vrouw Saraï: "Je bent een mooie vrouw. 12 Als de Egyptenaren je zien, zullen ze mij vermoorden om met jou te kunnen trouwen. Ze zullen me doden omdat je mijn vrouw bent. 13 Zeg daarom dat je mijn zus bent. Dan zullen ze me goed behandelen en me in leven laten." 14 Toen Abram Egypte binnentrok, zagen de Egyptenaren dat Saraï een heel mooie vrouw was. 15 De dienaren van de farao vertelden hem over haar. Daarom liet de farao Saraï naar zijn paleis brengen. 16 En hij was goed voor Abram, omdat hij met Saraï wilde trouwen. Hij gaf hem schapen, koeien, ezels, slaven, slavinnen, vrouwtjes-ezels en kamelen.[a]
17 Maar de Heer strafte de farao en iedereen in zijn paleis met allerlei ziekten, omdat hij Saraï, de vrouw van Abram, bij zich in huis had gehaald. 18 Toen riep de farao Abram en zei: "Waarom heb je dit gedaan? Waarom heb je me niet verteld dat ze je vrouw is? 19 Waarom heb je gezegd dat ze je zus is? Ik was bijna met haar getrouwd! Hier is je vrouw weer. Neem haar mee en verdwijn!" 20 En de farao gaf zijn mannen het bevel om Abram met zijn vrouw en met alles wat hij had, het land uit te zetten.

De nakomelingen van Noach
10 Dit zijn de nakomelingen van Sem, Cham en Jafet, de drie zonen van Noach, want na de watervloed werden hun zonen geboren. 2 De zonen van Jafet waren Gomer, Magog, Madai, Jawan, Tubal, Mesech en Tiras.
3 De zonen van Gomer waren Askenaz, Rifat en Togarma. 4 De zonen van Jawan waren Elisa, Tarsis, de Kittieten en de Dodanieten. 5 Hun nakomelingen werden de zeevaarders die langs de kust wonen en ieder een eigen taal hebben.
6 De zonen van Cham waren Kus, Misraïm, Put en Kanaän. 7 De zonen van Kus waren Saba, Chawila, Sabta, Rama en Sabtecha. 8 De zonen van Rama waren Seba en Dedan. Een van de nakomelingen van Kus heette Nimrod. Hij werd de eerste machthebber op aarde. 9 Hij was een geweldig jager, door niemand overtroffen. De naam Nimrod werd een begrip voor de mensen. Zij zeiden: ‘Hij is een Nimrod,’ waarmee dan werd bedoeld dat iemand een geweldenaar was. 10 De basis van zijn koninkrijk waren de steden Babel, Uruk, Akkad en Kalne in het land Sinear. 11,12 Van daaruit trok hij naar Assyrië en bouwde daar Ninevé, Rechobot-Ir, Kalach en Resen. Die laatste stad lag tussen Ninevé en Kalach en was de belangrijkste stad van het rijk.
13,14 Misraïm was de voorvader van de Ludieten, de Anamieten, de Lehabieten, de Naftuchieten, de Patrusieten, de Kasluchieten, waaruit de Filistijnen zijn voortgekomen en de Kretenzers.
15-19 Kanaäns oudste zoon heette Sidon en diens broer heette Chet. De volgende volken zijn afstammelingen van Kanaän: de Jebusieten, de Amorieten, de Girgasieten, de Chiwwieten, de Arkieten, de Sinieten, de Arwadieten, de Semarieten en de Hamatieten. De nakomelingen van Kanaän verspreidden zich van Sodom, Gomorra, Adma en Seboïm tot Lesa. 20 Al deze volken, die zich overal verspreidden en veel verschillende talen spraken, waren nakomelingen van Cham.
21 Eber was een afstammeling van Sem, de oudste broer van Jafet. 22 Hier volgen de zonen van Sem: Elam, Assur, Arpachsad, Lud en Aram. 23 De zonen van Aram waren Us, Chul, Geter en Mas. 24 De zoon van Arpachsad heette Selach en diens zoon heette Eber. 25 Eber kreeg twee zonen: Peleg (dat betekent Verdeeldheid, tijdens zijn leven verdeelde God de talen van de mensen) en Joktan. 26-30 Joktan was de vader van Almodad, Selef, Chasarmawet, Jerach, Hadoram, Uzal, Dikla, Obal, Abimaël, Seba, Ofir, Chawila en Jobab. De afstammelingen van Joktan leefden in het gebied tussen Mescha en het in het oosten gelegen gebergte van Sefar. 31 Al deze mensen waren afstammelingen van Sem, verdeeld per geslacht, taal, land en volk.
32 Dit was het geslachtsregister van Noach en zijn zonen. Door de geslachten heen verspreidden hun afstammelingen zich over de aarde en vormden zo de volken.
De toren van Babel
11 In die tijd spraken alle mensen één taal. 2 De bevolking groeide en trok in oostelijke richting. Toen ontdekte men in het land Sinear een grote vlakte, waar het goed wonen was. Veel mensen trokken daarheen en het werd een dichtbevolkt gebied.
3 De bewoners van die vlakte waren van plan een grote stad te bouwen en een hoge toren die tot in de hemel reikte. Een eeuwig monument voor de bouwers. 4 ‘Op die manier krijgen we een centrale plaats voor onze mensen, zodat we niet steeds verder hoeven te zwerven,’ meenden zij. En zo begon de bouw van de stad. Ze bakten stenen en als cement gebruikten ze asfalt. 5,6 Toen de Here de bouw van de stad en de toren zag, zei Hij: ‘Kijk eens wat zij al bereiken nu ze nog maar aan het begin van hun samenwerking staan. Voor dit volk met zijn ene taal zal voortaan niets meer onmogelijk zijn! 7 Laten Wij afdalen en hun verschillende talen geven, zodat zij elkaar niet meer begrijpen!’ 8 Op die manier verspreidde God de mensen over de hele aarde en zij stopten met de bouw van de stad. 9 Daarom werd die stad Babel (Verwarring) genoemd. Dat was de plaats waar de Here verwarring onder de mensen stichtte door hun verschillende talen te geven en over de hele aarde te verspreiden.
10,11 Hier is nog eens een opsomming, nu uitgebreider, van de nakomelingen van Sem. Twee jaar na de grote watervloed—Sem was toen honderd jaar oud—kreeg hij een zoon, Arpachsad. Na diens geboorte leefde Sem nog vijfhonderd jaar en kreeg nog vele zonen en dochters.
12,13 Toen Arpachsad vijfendertig jaar was, werd zijn zoon Selach geboren. Na Selachs geboorte leefde Arpachsad nog vierhonderddrie jaar en kreeg nog meer zonen en dochters.
14,15 Selach was dertig bij de geboorte van zijn zoon Eber. Daarna leefde hij nog vierhonderddrie jaar en kreeg nog meer zonen en dochters.
16,17 Eber was vierendertig toen zijn zoon Peleg werd geboren. Hij leefde toen nog vierhonderddertig jaar en kreeg nog meer zonen en dochters.
18,19 Peleg was dertig toen zijn zoon Reü geboren werd. Hij leefde toen nog tweehonderdnegen jaar en kreeg nog meer zonen en dochters.
20,21 Bij Serugs geboorte was Reü tweeëndertig jaar. Daarna leefde hij nog tweehonderdzeven jaar en kreeg in die tijd nog meer zonen en dochters.
22,23 Serug was dertig toen zijn zoon Nachor werd geboren. In de tweehonderd jaar die hij daarna nog leefde, kreeg hij nog meer zonen en dochters.
24,25 Toen Terach werd geboren, was zijn vader Nachor zesentwintig. Nachor leefde nog honderdnegentien jaar en kreeg nog meer zonen en dochters.
26 Toen Terach zeventig was, kreeg hij drie zonen: Abram, Nachor en Haran. 27 Haran had een zoon, Lot. 28 Haran stierf echter jong in zijn geboorteland (Ur der Chaldeeën), zodat zijn vader hem overleefde. 29 In de tussentijd trouwde Abram met zijn halfzuster Sarai en Nachor trouwde met Milka, de dochter van Haran. Haran was ook de vader van Jiska.
30 Sarai was onvruchtbaar en kreeg geen kinderen.
31 Op een goede dag brak Terach op vanuit Ur der Chaldeeën om samen met Abram, Harans zoon Lot en Abrams vrouw Sarai naar het land Kanaän te gaan. Onderweg bleven zij echter in de stad Haran en vestigden zich daar. 32 Daar stierf Terach. Hij was tweehonderdvijf jaar oud geworden.
De farao door Abram misleid
12 Eerder had de Here Abram de opdracht gegeven: ‘Verlaat uw land en uw familie en ga naar het land dat Ik u zal wijzen. 2 Dan zal Ik u de vader van een groot volk maken. Ik zal u zegenen en uw naam overal beroemd maken. U zult vele anderen tot een zegen zijn. 3 Als iemand u zegent, zal Ik hem zegenen en als iemand u vervloekt, zal Ik hem vervloeken. U zult voor alle volken een zegen zijn.’
4 Abram gehoorzaamde de Here en vertrok met zijn neef Lot. Abram was toen vijfenzeventig jaar. 5 Hij nam zijn vrouw Sarai, zijn neef Lot en al zijn bezittingen mee: vee en slaven die hij in Haran had verzameld. Zo kwamen zij in Kanaän aan.
6 Trekkend door het land kwamen zij in de buurt van Sichem, bij het eikenbos Moré. In dat gebied leefden in die tijd Kanaänieten. 7 Daar verscheen de Here opnieuw aan Abram en zei: ‘Dit land zal Ik aan uw nageslacht geven.’ Abram bouwde een altaar op de plaats waar hij de Here ontmoette. 8 Daarna trok hij in zuidelijke richting naar het heuvelachtige gebied tussen Betel in het westen en Ai in het oosten. Hij zette daar zijn tent op, bouwde een altaar voor de Here en aanbad Hem. 9 Zo trok Abram steeds verder naar het zuiden in de richting van de Negev.
10 Er brak echter een zware hongersnood uit in Kanaän en Abram besloot naar Egypte uit te wijken. 11-13 Toen zij de grens van Egypte naderden, begon Abram zich zorgen te maken. Hij zei tegen zijn vrouw Sarai: ‘Je bent een knappe vrouw. Als de Egyptenaren jou zien, zouden ze mij wel eens kunnen doden om jou te krijgen. Daarom kun je beter zeggen dat je mijn zuster bent. Dan zullen de Egyptenaren mij goed behandelen, ter wille van jou!’ 14,15 En inderdaad, zo gauw de Egyptenaren de schoonheid van Sarai zagen, brachten zij hun koning, de farao, op de hoogte. Hij nam Sarai op in zijn harem. 16 De farao overlaadde Abram met geschenken: schapen, runderen, ezels, slaven, slavinnen en kamelen. 17 Maar de Here stuurde zware plagen over de hele hofhouding, omdat de farao Sarai in zijn harem had opgenomen.
18 Toen riep de farao Abram bij zich. ‘Wat hebt u mij aangedaan? Waarom hebt u gezegd dat Sarai uw zuster was, zodat ik haar als mijn vrouw heb genomen? Waarom hebt u mij niet verteld dat zij uw vrouw is? 19 Hoe kon u haar aan mij afstaan door te zeggen dat zij uw zuster is? Neem haar maar terug en vertrek!’ 20 Begeleid door een gewapend escorte werden Abram en zijn vrouw met al hun bezittingen het land uitgezet.

13 Egypt was the father of

15 Canaan(AJ) was the father of
Sidon(AK) his firstborn,[g](AL) and of the Hittites,(AM) 16 Jebusites,(AN) Amorites,(AO) Girgashites,(AP) 17 Hivites,(AQ) Arkites, Sinites, 18 Arvadites,(AR) Zemarites and Hamathites.(AS)
Later the Canaanite(AT) clans scattered 19 and the borders of Canaan(AU) reached from Sidon(AV) toward Gerar(AW) as far as Gaza,(AX) and then toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboyim,(AY) as far as Lasha.
20 These are the sons of Ham by their clans and languages, in their territories and nations.
The Semites(AZ)
21 Sons were also born to Shem, whose older brother was[h] Japheth; Shem was the ancestor of all the sons of Eber.(BA)
22 The sons of Shem:
Elam,(BB) Ashur,(BC) Arphaxad,(BD) Lud and Aram.(BE)
23 The sons of Aram:
Uz,(BF) Hul, Gether and Meshek.[i]
24 Arphaxad was the father of[j] Shelah,
and Shelah the father of Eber.(BG)
25 Two sons were born to Eber:
One was named Peleg,[k] because in his time the earth was divided; his brother was named Joktan.
26 Joktan was the father of
Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, 27 Hadoram, Uzal,(BH) Diklah, 28 Obal, Abimael, Sheba,(BI) 29 Ophir,(BJ) Havilah and Jobab. All these were sons of Joktan.
30 The region where they lived stretched from Mesha toward Sephar, in the eastern hill country.
31 These are the sons of Shem by their clans and languages, in their territories and nations.
32 These are the clans of Noah’s sons,(BK) according to their lines of descent, within their nations. From these the nations spread out over the earth(BL) after the flood.
The Tower of Babel
11 Now the whole world had one language(BM) and a common speech. 2 As people moved eastward,[l] they found a plain in Shinar[m](BN) and settled there.
3 They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks(BO) and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone,(BP) and tar(BQ) for mortar. 4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens,(BR) so that we may make a name(BS) for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered(BT) over the face of the whole earth.”(BU)
5 But the Lord came down(BV) to see the city and the tower the people were building. 6 The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language(BW) they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us(BX) go down(BY) and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”(BZ)
8 So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth,(CA) and they stopped building the city. 9 That is why it was called Babel[n](CB)—because there the Lord confused the language(CC) of the whole world.(CD) From there the Lord scattered(CE) them over the face of the whole earth.
From Shem to Abram(CF)
10 This is the account(CG) of Shem’s family line.
Two years after the flood, when Shem was 100 years old, he became the father[o] of Arphaxad.(CH) 11 And after he became the father of Arphaxad, Shem lived 500 years and had other sons and daughters.
12 When Arphaxad had lived 35 years, he became the father of Shelah.(CI) 13 And after he became the father of Shelah, Arphaxad lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.[p]
14 When Shelah had lived 30 years, he became the father of Eber.(CJ) 15 And after he became the father of Eber, Shelah lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.
16 When Eber had lived 34 years, he became the father of Peleg.(CK) 17 And after he became the father of Peleg, Eber lived 430 years and had other sons and daughters.
18 When Peleg had lived 30 years, he became the father of Reu.(CL) 19 And after he became the father of Reu, Peleg lived 209 years and had other sons and daughters.
20 When Reu had lived 32 years, he became the father of Serug.(CM) 21 And after he became the father of Serug, Reu lived 207 years and had other sons and daughters.
22 When Serug had lived 30 years, he became the father of Nahor.(CN) 23 And after he became the father of Nahor, Serug lived 200 years and had other sons and daughters.
24 When Nahor had lived 29 years, he became the father of Terah.(CO) 25 And after he became the father of Terah, Nahor lived 119 years and had other sons and daughters.
26 After Terah had lived 70 years, he became the father of Abram,(CP) Nahor(CQ) and Haran.(CR)
Abram’s Family
27 This is the account(CS) of Terah’s family line.
Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor(CT) and Haran. And Haran became the father of Lot.(CU) 28 While his father Terah was still alive, Haran died in Ur of the Chaldeans,(CV) in the land of his birth. 29 Abram and Nahor(CW) both married. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai,(CX) and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milkah;(CY) she was the daughter of Haran, the father of both Milkah and Iskah. 30 Now Sarai was childless because she was not able to conceive.(CZ)
31 Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot(DA) son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law(DB) Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and together they set out from Ur of the Chaldeans(DC) to go to Canaan.(DD) But when they came to Harran,(DE) they settled there.
32 Terah(DF) lived 205 years, and he died in Harran.
The Call of Abram
12 The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household(DG) to the land(DH) I will show you.(DI)
2 “I will make you into a great nation,(DJ)
and I will bless you;(DK)
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing.[q](DL)
3 I will bless those who bless you,
and whoever curses you I will curse;(DM)
and all peoples on earth
will be blessed through you.(DN)”[r]
4 So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot(DO) went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old(DP) when he set out from Harran.(DQ) 5 He took his wife Sarai,(DR) his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated(DS) and the people(DT) they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan,(DU) and they arrived there.
6 Abram traveled through the land(DV) as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh(DW) at Shechem.(DX) At that time the Canaanites(DY) were in the land. 7 The Lord appeared to Abram(DZ) and said, “To your offspring[s] I will give this land.(EA)”(EB) So he built an altar there to the Lord,(EC) who had appeared to him.
8 From there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel(ED) and pitched his tent,(EE) with Bethel on the west and Ai(EF) on the east. There he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.(EG)
9 Then Abram set out and continued toward the Negev.(EH)
Abram in Egypt(EI)
10 Now there was a famine in the land,(EJ) and Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe.(EK) 11 As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai,(EL) “I know what a beautiful woman(EM) you are. 12 When the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me but will let you live. 13 Say you are my sister,(EN) so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared because of you.”
14 When Abram came to Egypt, the Egyptians saw that Sarai was a very beautiful woman.(EO) 15 And when Pharaoh’s officials saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh, and she was taken into his palace. 16 He treated Abram well for her sake, and Abram acquired sheep and cattle, male and female donkeys, male and female servants, and camels.(EP)
17 But the Lord inflicted(EQ) serious diseases on Pharaoh and his household(ER) because of Abram’s wife Sarai. 18 So Pharaoh summoned Abram. “What have you done to me?”(ES) he said. “Why didn’t you tell me she was your wife?(ET) 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’(EU) so that I took her to be my wife? Now then, here is your wife. Take her and go!” 20 Then Pharaoh gave orders about Abram to his men, and they sent him on his way, with his wife and everything he had.

32 And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran.
12 Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee:
2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
4 So Abram departed, as the Lord had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.
5 And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.
6 And Abram passed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land.
7 And the Lord appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the Lord, who appeared unto him.
8 And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the Lord, and called upon the name of the Lord.
9 And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south.
10 And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land.
11 And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon:
12 Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive.
13 Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister: that it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee.
14 And it came to pass, that, when Abram was come into Egypt, the Egyptians beheld the woman that she was very fair.
15 The princes also of Pharaoh saw her, and commended her before Pharaoh: and the woman was taken into Pharaoh's house.
16 And he entreated Abram well for her sake: and he had sheep, and oxen, and he asses, and menservants, and maidservants, and she asses, and camels.
17 And the Lord plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai Abram's wife.
18 And Pharaoh called Abram and said, What is this that thou hast done unto me? why didst thou not tell me that she was thy wife?
19 Why saidst thou, She is my sister? so I might have taken her to me to wife: now therefore behold thy wife, take her, and go thy way.
20 And Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him: and they sent him away, and his wife, and all that he had.
