The Beginning

1 In the beginning^(A) God created^(B) the heavens^(C) and the earth.^(D) ²Now the earth was formless^(E) and empty,^(F) darkness was over the surface of the deep,^(G) and the Spirit of God^(H) was hovering^(I) over the waters.

Genesis 1:22-27

New International Version

²²God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.”^(A) ²³And there was evening, and there was morning^(B)—the fifth day.

²⁴And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures^(C) according to their kinds:^(D) the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so.^(E) ²⁵God made the wild animals^(F) according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds.^(G) And God saw that it was good.^(H)

²⁶Then God said, “Let us^(I) make mankind^(J) in our image,^(K) in our likeness,^(L) so that they may rule^(M) over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky,^(N) over the livestock and all the wild animals,^[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

²⁷So God created^(O) mankind^(P) in his own image,^(Q)
in the image of God^(R) he created them;
male and female^(S) he created them.^(T)

²⁵Husbands, love your wives,^(A) just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her^(B) ²⁶to make her holy,^(C) cleansing^[a] her by the washing^(D) with water through the word, ²⁷and to present her to himself^(E) as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.^(F) ²⁸In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives^(G) as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. ²⁹After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— ³⁰for we are members of his body.^(H) ³¹“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”^[b]^(I) ³²This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church.
