God’s Promise to Noah

So God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them: (A)“Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth. (B)And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be on every beast of the earth, on every bird of the air, on all that move on the earth, and on all the fish of the sea. They are given into your hand. (C)Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. I have given you (D)all things, even as the (E)green herbs. (F)But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood. Surely for your lifeblood I will demand a reckoning; (G)from the hand of every beast I will require it, and (H)from the hand of man. From the hand of every (I)man’s brother I will require the life of man.

“Whoever (J)sheds man’s blood,
By man his blood shall be shed;
(K)For in the image of God
He made man.
And as for you, (L)be fruitful and multiply;
Bring forth abundantly in the earth
And multiply in it.”

Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying: “And as for Me, (M)behold, I establish (N)My covenant with you and with your [a]descendants after you, 10 (O)and with every living creature that is with you: the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you, of all that go out of the ark, every beast of the earth. 11 Thus (P)I establish My covenant with you: Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.”

12 And God said: (Q)“This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: 13 I set (R)My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. 14 It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud; 15 and (S)I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember (T)the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” 17 And God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth.”

Noah and His Sons

18 Now the sons of Noah who went out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. (U)And Ham was the father of Canaan. 19 (V)These three were the sons of Noah, (W)and from these the whole earth was populated.

20 And Noah began to be (X)a farmer, and he planted a vineyard. 21 Then he drank of the wine (Y)and was drunk, and became uncovered in his tent. 22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside. 23 (Z)But Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and went backward and covered the nakedness of their father. Their faces were [b]turned away, and they did not see their father’s nakedness.

24 So Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done to him. 25 Then he said:

(AA)“Cursed be Canaan;
A (AB)servant of servants
He shall be to his brethren.”

26 And he said:

(AC)“Blessed be the Lord,
The God of Shem,
And may Canaan be his servant.
27 May God (AD)enlarge Japheth,
(AE)And may he dwell in the tents of Shem;
And may Canaan be his servant.”

28 And Noah lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years. 29 So all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years; and he died.

Nations Descended from Noah(AF)

10 Now this is the genealogy of the sons of Noah: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. (AG)And sons were born to them after the flood.

(AH)The sons of Japheth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras. The sons of Gomer were Ashkenaz, [c]Riphath, and Togarmah. The sons of Javan were Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and [d]Dodanim. From these (AI)the coastland peoples of the Gentiles were separated into their lands, everyone according to his language, according to their families, into their nations.

(AJ)The sons of Ham were Cush, Mizraim, [e]Put, and Canaan. The sons of Cush were Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabtechah; and the sons of Raamah were Sheba and Dedan.

Cush begot (AK)Nimrod; he began to be a mighty one on the earth. He was a mighty (AL)hunter (AM)before the Lord; therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod the mighty hunter before the Lord.” 10 (AN)And the beginning of his kingdom was (AO)Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. 11 From that land he went (AP)to Assyria and built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir, Calah, 12 and Resen between Nineveh and Calah (that is the principal city).

13 Mizraim begot Ludim, Anamim, Lehabim, Naphtuhim, 14 Pathrusim, and Casluhim (AQ)(from whom came the Philistines and Caphtorim).

15 Canaan begot Sidon his firstborn, and (AR)Heth; 16 (AS)the Jebusite, the Amorite, and the Girgashite; 17 the Hivite, the Arkite, and the Sinite; 18 the Arvadite, the Zemarite, and the Hamathite. Afterward the families of the Canaanites were dispersed. 19 (AT)And the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon as you go toward Gerar, as far as Gaza; then as you go toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha. 20 These were the sons of Ham, according to their families, according to their languages, in their lands and in their nations.

21 And children were born also to Shem, the father of all the children of Eber, [f]the brother of Japheth the elder. 22 The (AU)sons of Shem were Elam, Asshur, (AV)Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram. 23 The sons of Aram were Uz, Hul, Gether, and [g]Mash. 24 [h]Arphaxad begot (AW)Salah, and Salah begot Eber. 25 (AX)To Eber were born two sons: the name of one was [i]Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan. 26 Joktan begot Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, 27 Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, 28 [j]Obal, Abimael, Sheba, 29 Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. All these were the sons of Joktan. 30 And their dwelling place was from Mesha as you go toward Sephar, the mountain of the east. 31 These were the sons of Shem, according to their families, according to their languages, in their lands, according to their nations.

32 (AY)These were the families of the sons of Noah, according to their generations, in their nations; (AZ)and from these the nations were divided on the earth after the flood.

The Tower of Babel

11 Now the whole earth had one language and one [k]speech. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land (BA)of Shinar, and they dwelt there. Then they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and [l]bake them thoroughly.” They had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar. And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower (BB)whose top is in the heavens; let us make a (BC)name for ourselves, lest we (BD)be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”

(BE)But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. And the Lord said, “Indeed (BF)the people are one and they all have (BG)one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they (BH)propose to do will be withheld from them. Come, (BI)let Us go down and there (BJ)confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.” So (BK)the Lord scattered them abroad from there (BL)over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city. Therefore its name is called [m]Babel, (BM)because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.

Shem’s Descendants(BN)

10 (BO)This is the genealogy of Shem: Shem was one hundred years old, and begot Arphaxad two years after the flood. 11 After he begot Arphaxad, Shem lived five hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.

12 Arphaxad lived thirty-five years, (BP)and begot Salah. 13 After he begot Salah, Arphaxad lived four hundred and three years, and begot sons and daughters.

14 Salah lived thirty years, and begot Eber. 15 After he begot Eber, Salah lived four hundred and three years, and begot sons and daughters.

16 (BQ)Eber lived thirty-four years, and begot (BR)Peleg. 17 After he begot Peleg, Eber lived four hundred and thirty years, and begot sons and daughters.

18 Peleg lived thirty years, and begot Reu. 19 After he begot Reu, Peleg lived two hundred and nine years, and begot sons and daughters.

20 Reu lived thirty-two years, and begot (BS)Serug. 21 After he begot Serug, Reu lived two hundred and seven years, and begot sons and daughters.

22 Serug lived thirty years, and begot Nahor. 23 After he begot Nahor, Serug lived two hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.

24 Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and begot (BT)Terah. 25 After he begot Terah, Nahor lived one hundred and nineteen years, and begot sons and daughters.

26 Now Terah lived seventy years, and (BU)begot [n]Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

Terah’s Descendants

27 This is the genealogy of Terah: Terah begot (BV)Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Haran begot Lot. 28 And Haran died before his father Terah in his native land, in Ur of the Chaldeans. 29 Then Abram and Nahor took wives: the name of Abram’s wife was (BW)Sarai,[o] and the name of Nahor’s wife, (BX)Milcah, the daughter of Haran the father of Milcah and the father of Iscah. 30 But (BY)Sarai was barren; she had no child.

31 And Terah (BZ)took his son Abram and his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Abram’s wife, and they went out with them from (CA)Ur of the Chaldeans to go to (CB)the land of Canaan; and they came to Haran and dwelt there. 32 So the days of Terah were two hundred and five years, and Terah died in Haran.

Promises to Abram(CC)

12 Now the (CD)Lord had said to Abram:

“Get (CE)out of your country,
From your family
And from your father’s house,
To a land that I will show you.
(CF)I will make you a great nation;
(CG)I will bless you
And make your name great;
(CH)And you shall be a blessing.
(CI)I will bless those who bless you,
And I will curse him who curses you;
And in (CJ)you all the families of the earth shall be (CK)blessed.”

So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother’s son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and (CL)the [p]people whom they had acquired (CM)in Haran, and they (CN)departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan. Abram (CO)passed through the land to the place of Shechem, (CP)as far as [q]the terebinth tree of Moreh. (CQ)And the Canaanites were then in the land.

(CR)Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, (CS)“To your [r]descendants I will give this land.” And there he built an (CT)altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him. And he moved from there to the mountain east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to the Lord and (CU)called on the name of the Lord. So Abram journeyed, (CV)going on still toward the [s]South.

Abram in Egypt

10 Now there was (CW)a famine in the land, and Abram (CX)went down to Egypt to dwell there, for the famine was (CY)severe in the land. 11 And it came to pass, when he was close to entering Egypt, that he said to Sarai his wife, “Indeed I know that you are (CZ)a woman of beautiful countenance. 12 Therefore it will happen, when the Egyptians see you, that they will say, ‘This is his wife’; and they (DA)will kill me, but they will let you live. 13 (DB)Please say you are my (DC)sister, that it may be well with me for your sake, and that [t]I may live because of you.”

14 So it was, when Abram came into Egypt, that the Egyptians saw the woman, that she was very beautiful. 15 The princes of Pharaoh also saw her and commended her to Pharaoh. And the woman was taken to Pharaoh’s house. 16 He (DD)treated Abram well for her sake. He (DE)had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male and female servants, female donkeys, and camels.

17 But the Lord (DF)plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife. 18 And Pharaoh called Abram and said, (DG)“What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’? I might have taken her as my wife. Now therefore, here is your wife; take her and go your way.” 20 (DH)So Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him; and they sent him away, with his wife and all that he had.

God’s Covenant With Noah

Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth.(A) The fear and dread of you will fall on all the beasts of the earth, and on all the birds in the sky, on every creature that moves along the ground, and on all the fish in the sea; they are given into your hands.(B) Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you.(C) Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.(D)

“But you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it.(E) And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting.(F) I will demand an accounting from every animal.(G) And from each human being, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of another human being.(H)

“Whoever sheds human blood,
by humans shall their blood be shed;(I)
for in the image of God(J)
    has God made mankind.

As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it.”(K)

Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: “I now establish my covenant with you(L) and with your descendants after you 10 and with every living creature that was with you—the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you—every living creature on earth. 11 I establish my covenant(M) with you:(N) Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.(O)

12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant(P) I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come:(Q) 13 I have set my rainbow(R) in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow(S) appears in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant(T) between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life.(U) 16 Whenever the rainbow(V) appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant(W) between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”

17 So God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant(X) I have established between me and all life on the earth.”

The Sons of Noah

18 The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Japheth.(Y) (Ham was the father of Canaan.)(Z) 19 These were the three sons of Noah,(AA) and from them came the people who were scattered over the whole earth.(AB)

20 Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded[a] to plant a vineyard. 21 When he drank some of its wine,(AC) he became drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent. 22 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father naked(AD) and told his two brothers outside. 23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it across their shoulders; then they walked in backward and covered their father’s naked body. Their faces were turned the other way so that they would not see their father naked.

24 When Noah awoke from his wine and found out what his youngest son had done to him, 25 he said,

“Cursed(AE) be Canaan!(AF)
    The lowest of slaves
will he be to his brothers.(AG)

26 He also said,

“Praise be to the Lord, the God of Shem!(AH)
May Canaan be the slave(AI) of Shem.
27 May God extend Japheth’s[b] territory;(AJ)
may Japheth live in the tents of Shem,(AK)
and may Canaan be the slave of Japheth.”

28 After the flood Noah lived 350 years. 29 Noah lived a total of 950 years, and then he died.(AL)

The Table of Nations

10 This is the account(AM) of Shem, Ham and Japheth,(AN) Noah’s sons,(AO) who themselves had sons after the flood.

The Japhethites(AP)

The sons[c] of Japheth:

Gomer,(AQ) Magog,(AR) Madai, Javan,(AS) Tubal,(AT) Meshek(AU) and Tiras.

The sons of Gomer:

Ashkenaz,(AV) Riphath and Togarmah.(AW)

The sons of Javan:

Elishah,(AX) Tarshish,(AY) the Kittites(AZ) and the Rodanites.[d] (From these the maritime peoples spread out into their territories by their clans within their nations, each with its own language.)(BA)

The Hamites(BB)

The sons of Ham:

Cush,(BC) Egypt, Put(BD) and Canaan.(BE)

The sons of Cush:

Seba,(BF) Havilah,(BG) Sabtah, Raamah(BH) and Sabteka.

The sons of Raamah:

Sheba(BI) and Dedan.(BJ)

Cush was the father[e] of Nimrod,(BK) who became a mighty warrior on the earth. He was a mighty(BL) hunter(BM) before the Lord; that is why it is said, “Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the Lord.” 10 The first centers of his kingdom were Babylon,(BN) Uruk,(BO) Akkad and Kalneh,(BP) in[f] Shinar.[g](BQ) 11 From that land he went to Assyria,(BR) where he built Nineveh,(BS) Rehoboth Ir,[h] Calah 12 and Resen, which is between Nineveh and Calah—which is the great city.

13 Egypt was the father of

the Ludites, Anamites, Lehabites, Naphtuhites, 14 Pathrusites, Kasluhites (from whom the Philistines(BT) came) and Caphtorites.(BU)

15 Canaan(BV) was the father of

Sidon(BW) his firstborn,[i](BX) and of the Hittites,(BY) 16 Jebusites,(BZ) Amorites,(CA) Girgashites,(CB) 17 Hivites,(CC) Arkites, Sinites, 18 Arvadites,(CD) Zemarites and Hamathites.(CE)

Later the Canaanite(CF) clans scattered 19 and the borders of Canaan(CG) reached from Sidon(CH) toward Gerar(CI) as far as Gaza,(CJ) and then toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboyim,(CK) as far as Lasha.

20 These are the sons of Ham by their clans and languages, in their territories and nations.

The Semites(CL)

21 Sons were also born to Shem, whose older brother was[j] Japheth; Shem was the ancestor of all the sons of Eber.(CM)

22 The sons of Shem:

Elam,(CN) Ashur,(CO) Arphaxad,(CP) Lud and Aram.(CQ)

23 The sons of Aram:

Uz,(CR) Hul, Gether and Meshek.[k]

24 Arphaxad was the father of[l] Shelah,

and Shelah the father of Eber.(CS)

25 Two sons were born to Eber:

One was named Peleg,[m] because in his time the earth was divided; his brother was named Joktan.

26 Joktan was the father of

Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, 27 Hadoram, Uzal,(CT) Diklah, 28 Obal, Abimael, Sheba,(CU) 29 Ophir,(CV) Havilah and Jobab. All these were sons of Joktan.

30 The region where they lived stretched from Mesha toward Sephar, in the eastern hill country.

31 These are the sons of Shem by their clans and languages, in their territories and nations.

32 These are the clans of Noah’s sons,(CW) according to their lines of descent, within their nations. From these the nations spread out over the earth(CX) after the flood.

The Tower of Babel

11 Now the whole world had one language(CY) and a common speech. As people moved eastward,[n] they found a plain in Shinar[o](CZ) and settled there.

They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks(DA) and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone,(DB) and tar(DC) for mortar. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens,(DD) so that we may make a name(DE) for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered(DF) over the face of the whole earth.”(DG)

But the Lord came down(DH) to see the city and the tower the people were building. The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language(DI) they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us(DJ) go down(DK) and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”(DL)

So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth,(DM) and they stopped building the city. That is why it was called Babel[p](DN)—because there the Lord confused the language(DO) of the whole world.(DP) From there the Lord scattered(DQ) them over the face of the whole earth.

From Shem to Abram(DR)

10 This is the account(DS) of Shem’s family line.

Two years after the flood, when Shem was 100 years old, he became the father[q] of Arphaxad.(DT) 11 And after he became the father of Arphaxad, Shem lived 500 years and had other sons and daughters.

12 When Arphaxad had lived 35 years, he became the father of Shelah.(DU) 13 And after he became the father of Shelah, Arphaxad lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.[r]

14 When Shelah had lived 30 years, he became the father of Eber.(DV) 15 And after he became the father of Eber, Shelah lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.

16 When Eber had lived 34 years, he became the father of Peleg.(DW) 17 And after he became the father of Peleg, Eber lived 430 years and had other sons and daughters.

18 When Peleg had lived 30 years, he became the father of Reu.(DX) 19 And after he became the father of Reu, Peleg lived 209 years and had other sons and daughters.

20 When Reu had lived 32 years, he became the father of Serug.(DY) 21 And after he became the father of Serug, Reu lived 207 years and had other sons and daughters.

22 When Serug had lived 30 years, he became the father of Nahor.(DZ) 23 And after he became the father of Nahor, Serug lived 200 years and had other sons and daughters.

24 When Nahor had lived 29 years, he became the father of Terah.(EA) 25 And after he became the father of Terah, Nahor lived 119 years and had other sons and daughters.

26 After Terah had lived 70 years, he became the father of Abram,(EB) Nahor(EC) and Haran.(ED)

Abram’s Family

27 This is the account(EE) of Terah’s family line.

Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor(EF) and Haran. And Haran became the father of Lot.(EG) 28 While his father Terah was still alive, Haran died in Ur of the Chaldeans,(EH) in the land of his birth. 29 Abram and Nahor(EI) both married. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai,(EJ) and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milkah;(EK) she was the daughter of Haran, the father of both Milkah and Iskah. 30 Now Sarai was childless because she was not able to conceive.(EL)

31 Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot(EM) son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law(EN) Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and together they set out from Ur of the Chaldeans(EO) to go to Canaan.(EP) But when they came to Harran,(EQ) they settled there.

32 Terah(ER) lived 205 years, and he died in Harran.

The Call of Abram

12 The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household(ES) to the land(ET) I will show you.(EU)

“I will make you into a great nation,(EV)
    and I will bless you;(EW)
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing.[s](EX)
I will bless those who bless you,
and whoever curses you I will curse;(EY)
and all peoples on earth
    will be blessed through you.(EZ)[t]

So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot(FA) went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old(FB) when he set out from Harran.(FC) He took his wife Sarai,(FD) his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated(FE) and the people(FF) they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan,(FG) and they arrived there.

Abram traveled through the land(FH) as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh(FI) at Shechem.(FJ) At that time the Canaanites(FK) were in the land. The Lord appeared to Abram(FL) and said, “To your offspring[u] I will give this land.(FM)(FN) So he built an altar there to the Lord,(FO) who had appeared to him.

From there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel(FP) and pitched his tent,(FQ) with Bethel on the west and Ai(FR) on the east. There he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.(FS)

Then Abram set out and continued toward the Negev.(FT)

Abram in Egypt(FU)

10 Now there was a famine in the land,(FV) and Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe.(FW) 11 As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai,(FX) “I know what a beautiful woman(FY) you are. 12 When the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me but will let you live. 13 Say you are my sister,(FZ) so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared because of you.”

14 When Abram came to Egypt, the Egyptians saw that Sarai was a very beautiful woman.(GA) 15 And when Pharaoh’s officials saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh, and she was taken into his palace. 16 He treated Abram well for her sake, and Abram acquired sheep and cattle, male and female donkeys, male and female servants, and camels.(GB)

17 But the Lord inflicted(GC) serious diseases on Pharaoh and his household(GD) because of Abram’s wife Sarai. 18 So Pharaoh summoned Abram. “What have you done to me?”(GE) he said. “Why didn’t you tell me she was your wife?(GF) 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’(GG) so that I took her to be my wife? Now then, here is your wife. Take her and go!” 20 Then Pharaoh gave orders about Abram to his men, and they sent him on his way, with his wife and everything he had.

John the Baptist Prepares the Way(A)

Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, (B)Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, [a]while (C)Annas and Caiaphas were high priests, the word of God came to (D)John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. (E)And he went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance (F)for the remission of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying:

(G)“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord;
Make His paths straight.
Every valley shall be filled
And every mountain and hill brought low;
The crooked places shall be made straight
And the rough ways smooth;
And (H)all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’ ”

John Preaches to the People(I)

Then he said to the multitudes that came out to be baptized by him, (J)“Brood[b] of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Therefore bear fruits (K)worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore (L)every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

10 So the people asked him, saying, (M)“What shall we do then?”

11 He answered and said to them, (N)“He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, (O)let him do likewise.”

12 Then (P)tax collectors also came to be baptized, and said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?”

13 And he said to them, (Q)“Collect no more than what is appointed for you.”

14 Likewise the soldiers asked him, saying, “And what shall we do?”

So he said to them, “Do not [c]intimidate anyone (R)or accuse falsely, and be content with your wages.”

15 Now as the people were in expectation, and all reasoned in their hearts about John, whether he was the Christ or not, 16 John answered, saying to all, (S)“I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will (T)baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and (U)gather the wheat into His barn; but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire.”

18 And with many other exhortations he preached to the people. 19 (V)But Herod the tetrarch, being rebuked by him concerning Herodias, his [d]brother Philip’s wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, 20 also added this, above all, that he shut John up in prison.

John Baptizes Jesus(W)

21 When all the people were baptized, (X)it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. 22 And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am (Y)well pleased.”

John the Baptist Prepares the Way(A)(B)

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate(C) was governor of Judea, Herod(D) tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas,(E) the word of God came to John(F) son of Zechariah(G) in the wilderness. He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.(H) As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:

“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
    make straight paths for him.
Every valley shall be filled in,
every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight,
    the rough ways smooth.
And all people will see God’s salvation.’”[a](I)

John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers!(J) Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?(K) Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’(L) For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”(M)

10 “What should we do then?”(N) the crowd asked.

11 John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”(O)

12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized.(P) “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”

13 “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,”(Q) he told them.

14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”

He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely(R)—be content with your pay.”

15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John(S) might possibly be the Messiah.(T) 16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with[b] water.(U) But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with[c] the Holy Spirit and fire.(V) 17 His winnowing fork(W) is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”(X) 18 And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them.

19 But when John rebuked Herod(Y) the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done, 20 Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.(Z)
