The Flood Subsides

But (A)God remembered Noah and all the animals and all the livestock that were with him in the ark; and (B)God caused a wind to pass over the earth, and the water subsided. Also (C)the fountains of the deep and the [a]floodgates of the sky were closed, and (D)the rain from the sky was restrained; and the water receded steadily from the earth, and at the end (E)of 150 days the water decreased. Then in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, (F)the ark rested upon the mountains of Ararat. And the water decreased steadily until the tenth month; in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the tops of the mountains became visible.

Then it came about at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the (G)window of the ark which he had made; and he sent out a raven, and it [b]flew here and there until the water was dried up [c]from the earth. Then he sent out a [d]dove, to see if the water was low on the [e]surface of the land; but the dove found no resting place for the sole of its foot, so it returned to him in the ark, for the water was on the [f]surface of all the earth. Then he put out his hand and took it, and brought it into the ark to himself. 10 So he waited another seven days longer; and again he sent out the dove from the ark. 11 And the dove came to him in [g]the evening, and behold, in its [h]beak was a fresh olive leaf. So Noah knew that the water was low on the earth. 12 Then he waited another seven days longer, and sent out (H)the dove; but it did not return to him again.

13 Now it came about in the (I)six hundred and first year, in the first month, on the first of the month, that the water was dried up [i]from the earth. Then Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and behold, the [j]surface of the ground had dried up. 14 And in the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dry. 15 Then God spoke to Noah, saying, 16 “Go out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and your sons’ wives with you. 17 Bring out with you every living thing of all flesh that is with you, birds and animals and every crawling thing that crawls on the earth, that they may [k](J)breed abundantly on the earth, and (K)be fruitful and multiply on the earth.” 18 So Noah went out, and his sons and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him. 19 Every animal, every crawling thing, and every bird, everything that moves on the earth, went out [l]by their families from the ark.

20 Then Noah built (L)an altar to the Lord, and took some of every kind of (M)clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered (N)burnt offerings on the altar. 21 The Lord (O)smelled the soothing aroma, and the Lord said [m]to Himself, “I will never again (P)curse the ground on account of man, for (Q)the [n]intent of man’s heart is evil from his youth; (R)and I will never again [o]destroy every living thing, as I have done.

22 While the earth remains,
Seedtime and harvest,
Cold and heat,
(S)Summer and winter,
And (T)day and night
Shall not cease.”

Covenant of the Rainbow

Then God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them, “(U)Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth. The fear of you and the terror of you will be on every animal of the earth and on every bird of the sky; on everything that crawls on the ground, and on all the fish of the sea. They are handed over to you. Every moving thing that is alive shall be food for you; I have given everything to you, (V)as I gave the green plant. But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, (W)its blood. I certainly will require [p](X)your lifeblood; [q](Y)from every animal I will require it. And [r]from every person, [s]from every man as his brother I will require the life of a person.

(Z)Whoever sheds human blood,
By man his blood shall be shed,
For (AA)in the image of God
He made mankind.
As for you, (AB)be fruitful and multiply;
[t]Populate the earth abundantly and multiply in it.”

Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying, “Now behold, (AC)I Myself am establishing My covenant with you, and with your [u]descendants after you; 10 and with every living creature that is with you: the birds, the livestock, and every animal of the earth with you; of all that comes out of the ark, every animal of the earth. 11 I establish My covenant with you; and all flesh shall (AD)never again be eliminated by the waters of a flood, (AE)nor shall there again be a flood to destroy the earth.” 12 God said, “This is (AF)the sign of the covenant which I am making between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for [v]all future generations; 13 I have set My (AG)rainbow in the cloud, and it shall [w]serve as a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth. 14 It shall come about, when I make a cloud appear over the earth, that the rainbow will be seen in the cloud, 15 and (AH)I will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and (AI)never again shall the water become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 When the rainbow is in the cloud, then I will look at it, to remember the (AJ)everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” 17 And God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth.”

18 Now the sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth; and (AK)Ham was the father of Canaan. 19 These three were the sons of Noah, and (AL)from these the whole earth was [x]populated.

20 Then Noah began [y]farming and planted a vineyard. 21 He drank some of the wine and (AM)became drunk, and uncovered himself inside his tent. 22 Ham, the father of Canaan, (AN)saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside. 23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it on both their shoulders and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were [z]turned away, so that they did not see their father’s nakedness. 24 When Noah awoke from his wine, he knew what his youngest son had done to him. 25 So he said,

(AO)Cursed be Canaan;
[aa](AP)A servant of servants
He shall be to his brothers.”

26 He also said,

(AQ)Blessed be the Lord,
The God of Shem;
And may Canaan be [ab]his servant.
27 (AR)May God enlarge Japheth,
And may he live in the tents of Shem;
And may Canaan be [ac]his servant.”

28 Noah lived 350 years after the flood. 29 So all the days of Noah were 950 years, and he died.

Descendants of Noah

10 Now these are the records of the generations of the sons of Noah: Shem, Ham, and Japheth; and sons were born to them after the flood.

(AS)The sons of Japheth were (AT)Gomer, Magog, (AU)Madai, (AV)Javan, Tubal, (AW)Meshech, and Tiras. The sons of Gomer were (AX)Ashkenaz, [ad]Riphath, and (AY)Togarmah. The sons of Javan were Elishah, (AZ)Tarshish, Kittim, and [ae]Dodanim. From these the people of the coastlands of the nations [af]were separated into their lands, every one according to his language, according to their families, into their nations.

(BA)The sons of Ham were Cush, Mizraim, Put, and Canaan. The sons of Cush were (BB)Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, (BC)Raamah, and Sabteca; and the sons of Raamah were (BD)Sheba and (BE)Dedan. Now Cush fathered Nimrod; he [ag]became a mighty one on the earth. He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the Lord.” 10 And the beginning of his kingdom was [ah](BF)Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of (BG)Shinar. 11 From that land he went (BH)to Assyria, and built Nineveh, Rehoboth-Ir, Calah, 12 and Resen between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city. 13 Mizraim fathered (BI)Ludim, Anamim, Lehabim, Naphtuhim, 14 (BJ)Pathrusim, Casluhim (from whom came the Philistines), and Caphtorim.

15 Canaan fathered (BK)Sidon, his firstborn, and (BL)Heth, 16 (BM)the Jebusite, the Amorite, the Girgashite, 17 the Hivite, the Arkite, the Sinite, 18 the Arvadite, the Zemarite, and the Hamathite; and afterward the families of the Canaanite were spread abroad. 19 (BN)The territory of the Canaanite [ai]extended from Sidon [aj]going toward Gerar, as far as Gaza; and [ak]going toward (BO)Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha. 20 These are the sons of Ham, according to their families, according to their languages, by their lands, and by their nations.

21 Also to Shem, the father of all the children of Eber, and the older brother of Japheth, children were born. 22 (BP)The sons of Shem were (BQ)Elam, Asshur, (BR)Arpachshad, (BS)Lud, and Aram. 23 The sons of Aram were (BT)Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash. 24 Arpachshad fathered (BU)Shelah; and Shelah fathered Eber. 25 (BV)Two sons were born to Eber; the name of the one was [al]Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan. 26 Joktan fathered Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, 27 Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, 28 [am]Obal, Abimael, Sheba, 29 Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab; all of these were the sons of Joktan. 30 Now their [an]settlement [ao]extended from Mesha [ap]going toward Sephar, the hill country of the east. 31 These are the sons of Shem, according to their families, according to their languages, by their lands, and according to their nations.

32 These are the families of the sons of Noah, according to their descendants, by their nations; and (BW)out of these the nations were separated on the earth after the flood.

The Tower of Babel

11 Now all the earth [aq]used the same language and [ar]the same words. And it came about, as they journeyed [as]east, that they found a plain in the land (BX)of Shinar and [at]settled there. Then they said to one another, “Come, let’s make bricks and [au]fire them thoroughly.” And they used brick for stone, and they used (BY)tar for mortar. And they said, “Come, let’s build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top (BZ)will reach into heaven, and let’s make (CA)a name for ourselves; otherwise we (CB)will be scattered abroad over the face of all the earth.” Now (CC)the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the [av]men had built. And the Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have [aw](CD)the same language. And this is what they have started to do, and now nothing which they plan to do will be [ax]impossible for them. Come, [ay](CE)let Us go down and there (CF)confuse their [az]language, so that they will not understand one another’s [ba]speech.” So the Lord (CG)scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth; and they stopped building the city. Therefore it was named [bb](CH)Babel, because there the Lord confused the [bc]language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.

Descendants of Shem

10 (CI)These are the records of the generations of Shem. Shem was a hundred years old when he fathered Arpachshad, two years after the flood; 11 and Shem lived five hundred years after he fathered Arpachshad, and he fathered other sons and daughters.

12 Arpachshad lived thirty-five years, and fathered Shelah; 13 and Arpachshad lived 403 years after he fathered Shelah, and he fathered other sons and daughters.

14 Shelah lived thirty years, and fathered Eber; 15 and Shelah lived 403 years after he fathered Eber, and he fathered other sons and daughters.

16 Eber lived thirty-four years, and fathered Peleg; 17 and Eber lived 430 years after he fathered Peleg, and he fathered other sons and daughters.

18 Peleg lived thirty years, and fathered Reu; 19 and Peleg lived 209 years after he fathered Reu, and he fathered other sons and daughters.

20 Reu lived thirty-two years, and fathered Serug; 21 and Reu lived 207 years after he fathered Serug, and he fathered other sons and daughters.

22 Serug lived thirty years, and fathered Nahor; 23 and Serug lived two hundred years after he fathered Nahor, and he fathered other sons and daughters.

24 Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and fathered (CJ)Terah; 25 and Nahor lived 119 years after he fathered Terah, and he fathered other sons and daughters.

26 Terah lived seventy years, and (CK)fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

27 Now these are the records of the generations of Terah. Terah fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and (CL)Haran fathered (CM)Lot. 28 Haran died [bd]during the lifetime of his father Terah in the land of his birth, in (CN)Ur of the Chaldeans. 29 Abram and (CO)Nahor took wives for themselves. The name of Abram’s wife was (CP)Sarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife was (CQ)Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah [be]and Iscah. 30 (CR)Sarai was unable to conceive; she did not have a child.

31 Now Terah took his son Abram, and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Abram’s wife, and they departed [bf]together from (CS)Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan; and they went as far as Haran and [bg]settled there. 32 The days of Terah were 205 years; and Terah died in Haran.

Abram Journeys to Egypt

12 Now (CT)the Lord said to Abram,

“Go from your country,
And from your relatives
And from your father’s house,
To the land which I will show you;
And (CU)I will make you into a great nation,
And (CV)I will bless you,
And make your name great;
And you shall (CW)be a blessing;
And (CX)I will bless those who bless you,
And the one who [bh]curses you I will [bi]curse.
(CY)And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”

So Abram went away as the Lord had spoken to him; and (CZ)Lot went with him. Now Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. Abram took his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot, and all their (DA)possessions which they had accumulated, and (DB)the [bj]people which they had acquired in Haran, and they [bk]set out for the land of Canaan; (DC)so they came to the land of Canaan. Abram passed through the land as far as the site of (DD)Shechem, to the [bl]oak of Moreh. Now the Canaanites were in the land at that time. And the Lord (DE)appeared to Abram and said, “(DF)To your [bm]descendants I will give this land.” So he built (DG)an altar there to the Lord who had appeared to him. Then he proceeded from there to the mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent with (DH)Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; and there he built an altar to the Lord and (DI)called upon the name of the Lord. Then Abram journeyed on, continuing toward (DJ)the [bn]Negev.

10 Now there was (DK)a famine in the land; so Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a time, because the famine was (DL)severe in the land. 11 It came about, when he [bo]was approaching Egypt, that he said to his wife Sarai, “See now, I know that you are a [bp](DM)beautiful woman; 12 (DN)and when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife’; and they will kill me, but they will let you live. 13 Please say that you are (DO)my sister so that it may go well for me because of you, and that [bq](DP)I may live on account of you.” 14 Now it came about, when Abram entered Egypt, that the Egyptians [br]saw that the woman was very beautiful. 15 Pharaoh’s officials saw her and praised her to Pharaoh; and (DQ)the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house. 16 Therefore (DR)he treated Abram well for her sake; and [bs](DS)he gave him sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male servants and female servants, female donkeys, and camels.

17 But the Lord (DT)struck Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife. 18 Then Pharaoh called Abram and said, “(DU)What is this that you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her for myself as a wife? Now then, [bt]here is your wife, take her and go!” 20 And Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him; and they [bu]escorted him away, with his wife and all that belonged to him.

Abram and Lot

13 So Abram went up from Egypt to (DV)the [bv]Negev, he and his wife and all that belonged to him, and Lot with him.

Now Abram was (DW)very rich in livestock, silver, and gold. And he went [bw]on his journeys from the [bx]Negev as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, (DX)between Bethel and Ai, to the place of the (DY)altar which he had made there previously; and there Abram called on the name of the Lord. Now (DZ)Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks, herds, and tents. And (EA)the land could not [by]support both of them [bz]while living together, (EB)for their possessions were so great that they were not able to remain together. (EC)And there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. Now (ED)the Canaanites and the Perizzites were living in the land at that time.

(EE)So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no strife between you and me, nor between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are relatives! Is the entire land not before you? Please separate from me; if you choose the left, then I will go to the right; or if you choose the right, then I will go to the left.” 10 Lot raised his eyes and saw all the [ca]vicinity of the (EF)Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere—this was before the Lord (EG)destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah—like (EH)the garden of the Lord, (EI)like the land of Egypt [cb]going toward (EJ)Zoar. 11 So Lot chose for himself all the [cc]vicinity of the Jordan, and Lot journeyed eastward. So they separated from each other. 12 Abram [cd]settled in the land of Canaan, while Lot [ce]settled in (EK)the cities of the [cf]vicinity of the Jordan, and moved his tents as far as Sodom. 13 Now (EL)the men of Sodom were [cg]exceedingly wicked (EM)sinners against the Lord.

14 The Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, “(EN)Now raise your eyes and look from the place where you are, (EO)northward and southward, and eastward and westward; 15 (EP)for all the land which you see (EQ)I will give to you and to your [ch]descendants forever. 16 I will make your [ci]descendants (ER)as plentiful as the dust of the earth, so that if anyone can count the dust of the earth, then your [cj]descendants could also be counted. 17 Arise, (ES)walk about in the land through its length and width; for (ET)I will give it to you.” 18 Then Abram moved his tent and came and lived by the [ck](EU)oaks of Mamre, which are in Hebron; and there he built (EV)an altar to the Lord.

War of the Kings

14 And it came about in the days of Amraphel king of (EW)Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of (EX)Elam, and Tidal king of [cl]Goiim, that they made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of (EY)Admah, and Shemeber king of (EZ)Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, (FA)Zoar). All these kings [cm]came as allies to (FB)the Valley of Siddim (that is, (FC)the Salt Sea). For twelve years they had served Chedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled. And in the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him came and [cn]defeated the (FD)Rephaim in (FE)Ashteroth-karnaim, and the Zuzim in Ham, and the Emim in [co](FF)Shaveh-kiriathaim, and the (FG)Horites on their Mount Seir, as far as (FH)El-paran, which is by the wilderness. Then they turned back and came to En-mishpat (that is, (FI)Kadesh), and [cp]conquered all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, who lived in (FJ)Hazazon-tamar. And the king of Sodom and the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah and the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) came out; and they lined up for battle against them in (FK)the Valley of Siddim, against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of [cq]Goiim, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar—four kings against five. 10 Now the Valley of Siddim was full of tar pits; and (FL)the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and they fell [cr]into them. But those who survived fled to the (FM)hill country. 11 Then they took all the possessions of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food supply, and departed. 12 They also took Lot, (FN)Abram’s nephew, and his possessions and departed, (FO)for he was living in Sodom.

13 Then [cs]a survivor came and told Abram the (FP)Hebrew. Now he was residing by the [ct](FQ)oaks of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and brother of Aner, and they were [cu](FR)allies with Abram. 14 When Abram heard that (FS)his relative had been taken captive, he [cv]led out his trained men, (FT)born in his house, numbering 318, and went in pursuit as far as (FU)Dan. 15 Then (FV)he divided [cw]his forces against them by night, he and his servants, and [cx]defeated them, and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is [cy]north of (FW)Damascus. 16 He (FX)brought back all the possessions, and also brought back (FY)his relative Lot with his possessions, and also the women, and the other people.

God’s Promise to Abram

17 Then after his return from the [cz]defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, (FZ)the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, (GA)the King’s Valley). 18 And (GB)Melchizedek the king of Salem brought out (GC)bread and wine; now he was a (GD)priest of [da]God Most High. 19 And he blessed him and said,

“Blessed be Abram of [db]God Most High,
[dc](GE)Possessor of heaven and earth;
20 And blessed be [dd]God Most High,
Who has handed over your enemies to you.”

And (GF)he gave him a tenth of everything. 21 Then the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give the [de]people to me and take the possessions for yourself.” 22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have [df]sworn to the Lord [dg](GG)God Most High, [dh](GH)Possessor of heaven and earth, 23 that (GI)I will not take a thread or a sandal strap or anything that is yours, so that you do not say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’ 24 [di]I will take nothing except what the young men have eaten, and the share of the men who went with me, (GJ)Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their share.”

But God remembered(A) Noah and all the wild animals and the livestock that were with him in the ark, and he sent a wind over the earth,(B) and the waters receded. Now the springs of the deep and the floodgates of the heavens(C) had been closed, and the rain(D) had stopped falling from the sky. The water receded steadily from the earth. At the end of the hundred and fifty days(E) the water had gone down, and on the seventeenth day of the seventh month(F) the ark came to rest on the mountains(G) of Ararat.(H) The waters continued to recede until the tenth month, and on the first day of the tenth month the tops of the mountains became visible.

After forty days(I) Noah opened a window he had made in the ark and sent out a raven,(J) and it kept flying back and forth until the water had dried up from the earth.(K) Then he sent out a dove(L) to see if the water had receded from the surface of the ground. But the dove could find nowhere to perch because there was water over all the surface of the earth; so it returned to Noah in the ark. He reached out his hand and took the dove and brought it back to himself in the ark. 10 He waited seven more days and again sent out the dove from the ark. 11 When the dove returned to him in the evening, there in its beak was a freshly plucked olive leaf! Then Noah knew that the water had receded from the earth.(M) 12 He waited seven more days and sent the dove out again, but this time it did not return to him.

13 By the first day of the first month of Noah’s six hundred and first year,(N) the water had dried up from the earth. Noah then removed the covering from the ark and saw that the surface of the ground was dry. 14 By the twenty-seventh day of the second month(O) the earth was completely dry.

15 Then God said to Noah, 16 “Come out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and their wives.(P) 17 Bring out every kind of living creature that is with you—the birds, the animals, and all the creatures that move along the ground—so they can multiply on the earth and be fruitful and increase in number on it.”(Q)

18 So Noah came out, together with his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives.(R) 19 All the animals and all the creatures that move along the ground and all the birds—everything that moves on land—came out of the ark, one kind after another.

20 Then Noah built an altar to the Lord(S) and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean(T) birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings(U) on it. 21 The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma(V) and said in his heart: “Never again will I curse the ground(W) because of humans, even though[a] every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood.(X) And never again will I destroy(Y) all living creatures,(Z) as I have done.

22 “As long as the earth endures,
seedtime and harvest,(AA)
cold and heat,
summer and winter,(AB)
day and night
will never cease.”(AC)

God’s Covenant With Noah

Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth.(AD) The fear and dread of you will fall on all the beasts of the earth, and on all the birds in the sky, on every creature that moves along the ground, and on all the fish in the sea; they are given into your hands.(AE) Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you.(AF) Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.(AG)

“But you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it.(AH) And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting.(AI) I will demand an accounting from every animal.(AJ) And from each human being, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of another human being.(AK)

“Whoever sheds human blood,
by humans shall their blood be shed;(AL)
for in the image of God(AM)
    has God made mankind.

As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it.”(AN)

Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: “I now establish my covenant with you(AO) and with your descendants after you 10 and with every living creature that was with you—the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you—every living creature on earth. 11 I establish my covenant(AP) with you:(AQ) Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.(AR)

12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant(AS) I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come:(AT) 13 I have set my rainbow(AU) in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow(AV) appears in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant(AW) between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life.(AX) 16 Whenever the rainbow(AY) appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant(AZ) between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”

17 So God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant(BA) I have established between me and all life on the earth.”

The Sons of Noah

18 The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Japheth.(BB) (Ham was the father of Canaan.)(BC) 19 These were the three sons of Noah,(BD) and from them came the people who were scattered over the whole earth.(BE)

20 Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded[b] to plant a vineyard. 21 When he drank some of its wine,(BF) he became drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent. 22 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father naked(BG) and told his two brothers outside. 23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it across their shoulders; then they walked in backward and covered their father’s naked body. Their faces were turned the other way so that they would not see their father naked.

24 When Noah awoke from his wine and found out what his youngest son had done to him, 25 he said,

“Cursed(BH) be Canaan!(BI)
    The lowest of slaves
will he be to his brothers.(BJ)

26 He also said,

“Praise be to the Lord, the God of Shem!(BK)
May Canaan be the slave(BL) of Shem.
27 May God extend Japheth’s[c] territory;(BM)
may Japheth live in the tents of Shem,(BN)
and may Canaan be the slave of Japheth.”

28 After the flood Noah lived 350 years. 29 Noah lived a total of 950 years, and then he died.(BO)

The Table of Nations

10 This is the account(BP) of Shem, Ham and Japheth,(BQ) Noah’s sons,(BR) who themselves had sons after the flood.

The Japhethites(BS)

The sons[d] of Japheth:

Gomer,(BT) Magog,(BU) Madai, Javan,(BV) Tubal,(BW) Meshek(BX) and Tiras.

The sons of Gomer:

Ashkenaz,(BY) Riphath and Togarmah.(BZ)

The sons of Javan:

Elishah,(CA) Tarshish,(CB) the Kittites(CC) and the Rodanites.[e] (From these the maritime peoples spread out into their territories by their clans within their nations, each with its own language.)(CD)

The Hamites(CE)

The sons of Ham:

Cush,(CF) Egypt, Put(CG) and Canaan.(CH)

The sons of Cush:

Seba,(CI) Havilah,(CJ) Sabtah, Raamah(CK) and Sabteka.

The sons of Raamah:

Sheba(CL) and Dedan.(CM)

Cush was the father[f] of Nimrod,(CN) who became a mighty warrior on the earth. He was a mighty(CO) hunter(CP) before the Lord; that is why it is said, “Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the Lord.” 10 The first centers of his kingdom were Babylon,(CQ) Uruk,(CR) Akkad and Kalneh,(CS) in[g] Shinar.[h](CT) 11 From that land he went to Assyria,(CU) where he built Nineveh,(CV) Rehoboth Ir,[i] Calah 12 and Resen, which is between Nineveh and Calah—which is the great city.

13 Egypt was the father of

the Ludites, Anamites, Lehabites, Naphtuhites, 14 Pathrusites, Kasluhites (from whom the Philistines(CW) came) and Caphtorites.(CX)

15 Canaan(CY) was the father of

Sidon(CZ) his firstborn,[j](DA) and of the Hittites,(DB) 16 Jebusites,(DC) Amorites,(DD) Girgashites,(DE) 17 Hivites,(DF) Arkites, Sinites, 18 Arvadites,(DG) Zemarites and Hamathites.(DH)

Later the Canaanite(DI) clans scattered 19 and the borders of Canaan(DJ) reached from Sidon(DK) toward Gerar(DL) as far as Gaza,(DM) and then toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboyim,(DN) as far as Lasha.

20 These are the sons of Ham by their clans and languages, in their territories and nations.

The Semites(DO)

21 Sons were also born to Shem, whose older brother was[k] Japheth; Shem was the ancestor of all the sons of Eber.(DP)

22 The sons of Shem:

Elam,(DQ) Ashur,(DR) Arphaxad,(DS) Lud and Aram.(DT)

23 The sons of Aram:

Uz,(DU) Hul, Gether and Meshek.[l]

24 Arphaxad was the father of[m] Shelah,

and Shelah the father of Eber.(DV)

25 Two sons were born to Eber:

One was named Peleg,[n] because in his time the earth was divided; his brother was named Joktan.

26 Joktan was the father of

Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, 27 Hadoram, Uzal,(DW) Diklah, 28 Obal, Abimael, Sheba,(DX) 29 Ophir,(DY) Havilah and Jobab. All these were sons of Joktan.

30 The region where they lived stretched from Mesha toward Sephar, in the eastern hill country.

31 These are the sons of Shem by their clans and languages, in their territories and nations.

32 These are the clans of Noah’s sons,(DZ) according to their lines of descent, within their nations. From these the nations spread out over the earth(EA) after the flood.

The Tower of Babel

11 Now the whole world had one language(EB) and a common speech. As people moved eastward,[o] they found a plain in Shinar[p](EC) and settled there.

They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks(ED) and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone,(EE) and tar(EF) for mortar. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens,(EG) so that we may make a name(EH) for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered(EI) over the face of the whole earth.”(EJ)

But the Lord came down(EK) to see the city and the tower the people were building. The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language(EL) they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us(EM) go down(EN) and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”(EO)

So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth,(EP) and they stopped building the city. That is why it was called Babel[q](EQ)—because there the Lord confused the language(ER) of the whole world.(ES) From there the Lord scattered(ET) them over the face of the whole earth.

From Shem to Abram(EU)

10 This is the account(EV) of Shem’s family line.

Two years after the flood, when Shem was 100 years old, he became the father[r] of Arphaxad.(EW) 11 And after he became the father of Arphaxad, Shem lived 500 years and had other sons and daughters.

12 When Arphaxad had lived 35 years, he became the father of Shelah.(EX) 13 And after he became the father of Shelah, Arphaxad lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.[s]

14 When Shelah had lived 30 years, he became the father of Eber.(EY) 15 And after he became the father of Eber, Shelah lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.

16 When Eber had lived 34 years, he became the father of Peleg.(EZ) 17 And after he became the father of Peleg, Eber lived 430 years and had other sons and daughters.

18 When Peleg had lived 30 years, he became the father of Reu.(FA) 19 And after he became the father of Reu, Peleg lived 209 years and had other sons and daughters.

20 When Reu had lived 32 years, he became the father of Serug.(FB) 21 And after he became the father of Serug, Reu lived 207 years and had other sons and daughters.

22 When Serug had lived 30 years, he became the father of Nahor.(FC) 23 And after he became the father of Nahor, Serug lived 200 years and had other sons and daughters.

24 When Nahor had lived 29 years, he became the father of Terah.(FD) 25 And after he became the father of Terah, Nahor lived 119 years and had other sons and daughters.

26 After Terah had lived 70 years, he became the father of Abram,(FE) Nahor(FF) and Haran.(FG)

Abram’s Family

27 This is the account(FH) of Terah’s family line.

Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor(FI) and Haran. And Haran became the father of Lot.(FJ) 28 While his father Terah was still alive, Haran died in Ur of the Chaldeans,(FK) in the land of his birth. 29 Abram and Nahor(FL) both married. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai,(FM) and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milkah;(FN) she was the daughter of Haran, the father of both Milkah and Iskah. 30 Now Sarai was childless because she was not able to conceive.(FO)

31 Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot(FP) son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law(FQ) Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and together they set out from Ur of the Chaldeans(FR) to go to Canaan.(FS) But when they came to Harran,(FT) they settled there.

32 Terah(FU) lived 205 years, and he died in Harran.

The Call of Abram

12 The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household(FV) to the land(FW) I will show you.(FX)

“I will make you into a great nation,(FY)
    and I will bless you;(FZ)
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing.[t](GA)
I will bless those who bless you,
and whoever curses you I will curse;(GB)
and all peoples on earth
    will be blessed through you.(GC)[u]

So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot(GD) went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old(GE) when he set out from Harran.(GF) He took his wife Sarai,(GG) his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated(GH) and the people(GI) they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan,(GJ) and they arrived there.

Abram traveled through the land(GK) as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh(GL) at Shechem.(GM) At that time the Canaanites(GN) were in the land. The Lord appeared to Abram(GO) and said, “To your offspring[v] I will give this land.(GP)(GQ) So he built an altar there to the Lord,(GR) who had appeared to him.

From there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel(GS) and pitched his tent,(GT) with Bethel on the west and Ai(GU) on the east. There he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.(GV)

Then Abram set out and continued toward the Negev.(GW)

Abram in Egypt(GX)

10 Now there was a famine in the land,(GY) and Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe.(GZ) 11 As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai,(HA) “I know what a beautiful woman(HB) you are. 12 When the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me but will let you live. 13 Say you are my sister,(HC) so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared because of you.”

14 When Abram came to Egypt, the Egyptians saw that Sarai was a very beautiful woman.(HD) 15 And when Pharaoh’s officials saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh, and she was taken into his palace. 16 He treated Abram well for her sake, and Abram acquired sheep and cattle, male and female donkeys, male and female servants, and camels.(HE)

17 But the Lord inflicted(HF) serious diseases on Pharaoh and his household(HG) because of Abram’s wife Sarai. 18 So Pharaoh summoned Abram. “What have you done to me?”(HH) he said. “Why didn’t you tell me she was your wife?(HI) 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’(HJ) so that I took her to be my wife? Now then, here is your wife. Take her and go!” 20 Then Pharaoh gave orders about Abram to his men, and they sent him on his way, with his wife and everything he had.

Abram and Lot Separate

13 So Abram went up from Egypt(HK) to the Negev,(HL) with his wife and everything he had, and Lot(HM) went with him. Abram had become very wealthy(HN) in livestock(HO) and in silver and gold.

From the Negev(HP) he went from place to place until he came to Bethel,(HQ) to the place between Bethel and Ai(HR) where his tent had been earlier and where he had first built an altar.(HS) There Abram called on the name of the Lord.(HT)

Now Lot,(HU) who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together.(HV) And quarreling(HW) arose between Abram’s herders and Lot’s. The Canaanites(HX) and Perizzites(HY) were also living in the land(HZ) at that time.

So Abram said to Lot,(IA) “Let’s not have any quarreling between you and me,(IB) or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives.(IC) Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.”(ID)

10 Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain(IE) of the Jordan toward Zoar(IF) was well watered, like the garden of the Lord,(IG) like the land of Egypt.(IH) (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom(II) and Gomorrah.)(IJ) 11 So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company: 12 Abram lived in the land of Canaan,(IK) while Lot(IL) lived among the cities of the plain(IM) and pitched his tents near Sodom.(IN) 13 Now the people of Sodom(IO) were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.(IP)

14 The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west.(IQ) 15 All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring[w] forever.(IR) 16 I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted.(IS) 17 Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land,(IT) for I am giving it to you.”(IU)

18 So Abram went to live near the great trees of Mamre(IV) at Hebron,(IW) where he pitched his tents. There he built an altar to the Lord.(IX)

Abram Rescues Lot

14 At the time when Amraphel was king of Shinar,[x](IY) Arioch king of Ellasar, Kedorlaomer(IZ) king of Elam(JA) and Tidal king of Goyim, these kings went to war against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboyim,(JB) and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar).(JC) All these latter kings joined forces in the Valley of Siddim(JD) (that is, the Dead Sea Valley(JE)). For twelve years they had been subject to Kedorlaomer,(JF) but in the thirteenth year they rebelled.

In the fourteenth year, Kedorlaomer(JG) and the kings allied with him went out and defeated the Rephaites(JH) in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzites in Ham, the Emites(JI) in Shaveh Kiriathaim and the Horites(JJ) in the hill country of Seir,(JK) as far as El Paran(JL) near the desert. Then they turned back and went to En Mishpat (that is, Kadesh),(JM) and they conquered the whole territory of the Amalekites,(JN) as well as the Amorites(JO) who were living in Hazezon Tamar.(JP)

Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah,(JQ) the king of Admah, the king of Zeboyim(JR) and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar)(JS) marched out and drew up their battle lines in the Valley of Siddim(JT) against Kedorlaomer(JU) king of Elam,(JV) Tidal king of Goyim, Amraphel king of Shinar and Arioch king of Ellasar—four kings against five. 10 Now the Valley of Siddim(JW) was full of tar(JX) pits, and when the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah(JY) fled, some of the men fell into them and the rest fled to the hills.(JZ) 11 The four kings seized all the goods(KA) of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food; then they went away. 12 They also carried off Abram’s nephew Lot(KB) and his possessions, since he was living in Sodom.

13 A man who had escaped came and reported this to Abram the Hebrew.(KC) Now Abram was living near the great trees of Mamre(KD) the Amorite, a brother[y] of Eshkol(KE) and Aner, all of whom were allied with Abram. 14 When Abram heard that his relative(KF) had been taken captive, he called out the 318 trained(KG) men born in his household(KH) and went in pursuit as far as Dan.(KI) 15 During the night Abram divided his men(KJ) to attack them and he routed them, pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.(KK) 16 He recovered(KL) all the goods(KM) and brought back his relative Lot and his possessions, together with the women and the other people.

17 After Abram returned from defeating Kedorlaomer(KN) and the kings allied with him, the king of Sodom(KO) came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).(KP)

18 Then Melchizedek(KQ) king of Salem(KR) brought out bread(KS) and wine.(KT) He was priest of God Most High,(KU) 19 and he blessed Abram,(KV) saying,

“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,(KW)
    Creator of heaven and earth.(KX)
20 And praise be to God Most High,(KY)
who delivered your enemies into your hand.”

Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.(KZ)

21 The king of Sodom(LA) said to Abram, “Give me the people and keep the goods(LB) for yourself.”

22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom,(LC) “With raised hand(LD) I have sworn an oath to the Lord, God Most High,(LE) Creator of heaven and earth,(LF) 23 that I will accept nothing belonging to you,(LG) not even a thread or the strap of a sandal, so that you will never be able to say, ‘I made Abram rich.’ 24 I will accept nothing but what my men have eaten and the share that belongs to the men who went with me—to Aner, Eshkol and Mamre.(LH) Let them have their share.”
