⁶ At the end of forty days Noah opened the window of the ark that he had made ⁷ and sent forth a raven. It went to and fro until the waters were dried up from the earth. ⁸ Then he sent forth a dove from him, to see if the waters had subsided from the face of the ground. ⁹ But the dove found no place to set her foot, and she returned to him to the ark, for the waters were still on the face of the whole earth. So he put out his hand and took her and brought her into the ark with him. ¹⁰ He waited another seven days, and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark. ¹¹ And the dove came back to him in the evening, and behold, in her mouth was a freshly plucked olive leaf. So Noah knew that the waters had subsided from the earth. ¹² Then he waited another seven days and sent forth the dove, and she did not return to him anymore.

¹³ In the six hundred and first year, in the first month, the first day of the month, the waters were dried from off the earth. And Noah removed the covering of the ark and looked, and behold, the face of the ground was dry. ¹⁴ In the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth had dried out. ¹⁵ Then God said to Noah, ¹⁶ “Go out from the ark, ^(A)you and your wife, and your sons and your sons' wives with you. ¹⁷ Bring out with you every living thing that is with you of all flesh—birds and animals and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth—that they may swarm on the earth, and ^(B)be fruitful and multiply on the earth.” ¹⁸ So Noah went out, and his sons and his wife and his sons' wives with him. ¹⁹ Every beast, every creeping thing, and every bird, everything that moves on the earth, went out by families from the ark.

God's Covenant with Noah

²⁰ Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and took some of every clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar. ²¹ And when the Lord smelled ^(C)the pleasing aroma, the Lord said in his heart, “I will never again ^(D)curse^[a] the ground because of man, for ^(E)the intention of man's heart is evil from his youth. ^(F)Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done. ^22 (G)While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, ^(H)day and night, shall not cease.”

Jesus the Great High Priest

¹⁴ Since then we have ^(A)a great high priest ^(B)who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, ^(C)let us hold fast our confession. ¹⁵ For we do not have a high priest ^(D)who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been ^(E)tempted as we are, ^(F)yet without sin. ^16 (G)Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

5 For every high priest chosen from among men ^(H)is appointed to act on behalf of men ^(I)in relation to God, ^(J)to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. ^2 (K)He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself ^(L)is beset with weakness. ³ Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins ^(M)just as he does for those of the people. ⁴ And ^(N)no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, ^(O)just as Aaron was.

⁵ So also Christ ^(P)did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him,

²³ Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name ^(A)when they saw the signs that he was doing. ²⁴ But Jesus ^(B)on his part did not entrust himself to them, because ^(C)he knew all people ²⁵ and needed no one to bear witness about man, for ^(D)he himself knew what was in man.

You Must Be Born Again

3 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named ^(E)Nicodemus, ^(F)a ruler of the Jews. ² This man came to Jesus^{[a] (G)}by night and said to him, ^(H)“Rabbi, ^(I)we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do ^(J)unless God is with him.” ³ Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is ^(K)born ^(L)again^[b] he cannot ^(M)see the kingdom of God.” ⁴ Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?” ⁵ Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born ^(N)of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. ^6 (O)That which is born of the flesh is ^(P)flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.^{[c] 7 (Q)}Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You^[d] must be born ^(R)again.’ ^8 (S)The wind^[e] blows ^(T)where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

⁹ Nicodemus said to him, ^(U)“How can these things be?” ¹⁰ Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel ^(V)and yet you do not understand these things? ¹¹ Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(W)we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but ^(X)you^[f] do not receive our testimony. ¹² If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? ^13 (Y)No one has ^(Z)ascended into heaven except ^(AA)he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.^{[g] 14} And ^(AB)as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man ^(AC)be lifted up, ¹⁵ that whoever believes ^(AD)in him ^(AE)may have eternal life.^[h]
