14 After burying his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, together with his brothers and all the others who had gone with him to bury his father.(A)

Joseph Reassures His Brothers

15 When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “What if Joseph holds a grudge(B) against us and pays us back for all the wrongs we did to him?”(C) 16 So they sent word to Joseph, saying, “Your father left these instructions(D) before he died: 17 ‘This is what you are to say to Joseph: I ask you to forgive your brothers the sins(E) and the wrongs they committed in treating you so badly.’(F) Now please forgive the sins of the servants of the God of your father.(G)” When their message came to him, Joseph wept.(H)

18 His brothers then came and threw themselves down before him.(I) “We are your slaves,”(J) they said.

Joseph Reassures His Brothers

14 After burying Jacob, Joseph returned to Egypt with his brothers and all who had accompanied him to his father’s burial. 15 But now that their father was dead, Joseph’s brothers became fearful. “Now Joseph will show his anger and pay us back for all the wrong we did to him,” they said.

16 So they sent this message to Joseph: “Before your father died, he instructed us 17 to say to you: ‘Please forgive your brothers for the great wrong they did to you—for their sin in treating you so cruelly.’ So we, the servants of the God of your father, beg you to forgive our sin.” When Joseph received the message, he broke down and wept. 18 Then his brothers came and threw themselves down before Joseph. “Look, we are your slaves!” they said.

15 And when Joseph's brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, Joseph will peradventure hate us, and will certainly requite us all the evil which we did unto him.

16 And they sent a messenger unto Joseph, saying, Thy father did command before he died, saying,

17 So shall ye say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren, and their sin; for they did unto thee evil: and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spake unto him.

18 And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy servants.

15 When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, (A)they said, “Perhaps Joseph will hate us, and may [a]actually repay us for all the evil which we did to him.” 16 So they sent messengers to Joseph, saying, “Before your father died he commanded, saying, 17 ‘Thus you shall say to Joseph: “I beg you, please forgive the trespass of your brothers and their sin; (B)for they did evil to you.” ’ Now, please, forgive the trespass of the servants of (C)the God of your father.” And Joseph wept when they spoke to him.

18 Then his brothers also went and (D)fell down before his face, and they said, “Behold, we are your servants.”
