¹⁰ When they reached the threshing floor of Atad, which is across the Jordan, they lamented and wept loudly, and Joseph mourned seven days for his father. ¹¹ When the Canaanite inhabitants of the land saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a solemn mourning on the part of the Egyptians.” Therefore the place is named Abel-mizraim.^[a] It is across the Jordan.

Introduction

1 These are the words Moses spoke to all Israel across the Jordan in the wilderness,^(A) in the Arabah^(B) opposite Suph,^[a] between Paran^(C) and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth,^(D) and Di-zahab.

⁵ Across the Jordan in the land of Moab, Moses began to explain this law, saying:

¹⁴ Your wives, dependents, and livestock may remain in the land Moses gave you on this side of the Jordan. But your best soldiers must cross over in battle formation^[a] ahead of your brothers and help them ¹⁵ until the Lord gives your brothers rest, as he has given you, and they too possess the land the Lord your God is giving them. You may then return to the land of your inheritance^(A) and take possession of what Moses the Lord’s servant^(B) gave you on the east side of the Jordan.”
