29 And (A)when the time drew near that Israel must die, he called his son Joseph and said to him, “If now (B)I have found favor in your sight, (C)put your hand under my thigh and (D)promise to deal kindly and truly with me. (E)Do not bury me in Egypt, 30 but let me lie with my fathers. Carry me out of Egypt and (F)bury me in their burying place.” He answered, “I will do as you have said.” 31 And he said, “Swear to me”; and he swore to him. Then (G)Israel bowed himself upon the head of his bed.[a]

Jacob Blesses Ephraim and Manasseh

48 After this, Joseph was told, “Behold, your father is ill.” So he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. And it was told to Jacob, “Your son Joseph has come to you.” Then Israel summoned his strength and sat up in bed. And Jacob said to Joseph, (H)“God Almighty[b] appeared to me at (I)Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me, and said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will make of you a company of peoples and will give this land to your offspring after you (J)for an everlasting possession.’ And now your (K)two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, (L)are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine, as Reuben and Simeon are. And the children that you fathered after them shall be yours. They shall be called by the name of their brothers in their inheritance. As for me, when I came from Paddan, to my sorrow (M)Rachel died in the land of Canaan on the way, when there was still some distance[c] to go to Ephrath, and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).”

When Israel saw Joseph's sons, he said, “Who are these?” Joseph said to his father, (N)“They are my sons, whom God has given me here.” And he said, “Bring them to me, please, that (O)I may bless them.” 10 Now (P)the eyes of Israel were dim with age, so that he could not see. So Joseph brought them near him, (Q)and he kissed them and embraced them. 11 And Israel said to Joseph, (R)“I never expected to see your face; and behold, God has let me see your offspring also.” 12 Then Joseph removed them from his knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the earth. 13 And Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel's left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel's right hand, and brought them near him. 14 (S)And Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on the head of Ephraim, who was the younger, and his left hand on the head of Manasseh, (T)crossing his hands (for Manasseh was the firstborn). 15 And he blessed Joseph and said,

“The God (U)before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked,
    the God who has been my shepherd all my life long to this day,
16 (V)the angel who has (W)redeemed me from all evil, bless the boys;
    and in them let (X)my name be carried on, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac;
    and let them (Y)grow into a multitude[d] in the midst of the earth.”

29 When the time drew near for Israel(A) to die,(B) he called for his son Joseph and said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes,(C) put your hand under my thigh(D) and promise that you will show me kindness(E) and faithfulness.(F) Do not bury me in Egypt, 30 but when I rest with my fathers,(G) carry me out of Egypt and bury me where they are buried.”(H)

“I will do as you say,” he said.

31 “Swear to me,”(I) he said. Then Joseph swore to him,(J) and Israel(K) worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.[a](L)

Manasseh and Ephraim

48 Some time later Joseph was told, “Your father is ill.” So he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim(M) along with him. When Jacob was told, “Your son Joseph has come to you,” Israel(N) rallied his strength and sat up on the bed.

Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty[b](O) appeared to me at Luz(P) in the land of Canaan, and there he blessed me(Q) and said to me, ‘I am going to make you fruitful and increase your numbers.(R) I will make you a community of peoples, and I will give this land(S) as an everlasting possession to your descendants after you.’(T)

“Now then, your two sons born to you in Egypt(U) before I came to you here will be reckoned as mine; Ephraim and Manasseh will be mine,(V) just as Reuben(W) and Simeon(X) are mine. Any children born to you after them will be yours; in the territory they inherit they will be reckoned under the names of their brothers. As I was returning from Paddan,[c](Y) to my sorrow(Z) Rachel died in the land of Canaan while we were still on the way, a little distance from Ephrath. So I buried her there beside the road to Ephrath” (that is, Bethlehem).(AA)

When Israel(AB) saw the sons of Joseph,(AC) he asked, “Who are these?”

“They are the sons God has given me here,”(AD) Joseph said to his father.

Then Israel said, “Bring them to me so I may bless(AE) them.”

10 Now Israel’s eyes were failing because of old age, and he could hardly see.(AF) So Joseph brought his sons close to him, and his father kissed them(AG) and embraced them.(AH)

11 Israel(AI) said to Joseph, “I never expected to see your face again,(AJ) and now God has allowed me to see your children too.”(AK)

12 Then Joseph removed them from Israel’s knees(AL) and bowed down with his face to the ground.(AM) 13 And Joseph took both of them, Ephraim on his right toward Israel’s left hand and Manasseh on his left toward Israel’s right hand,(AN) and brought them close to him. 14 But Israel(AO) reached out his right hand and put it on Ephraim’s head,(AP) though he was the younger,(AQ) and crossing his arms, he put his left hand on Manasseh’s head, even though Manasseh was the firstborn.(AR)

15 Then he blessed(AS) Joseph and said,

“May the God before whom my fathers
    Abraham and Isaac walked faithfully,(AT)
the God who has been my shepherd(AU)
    all my life to this day,
16 the Angel(AV) who has delivered me from all harm(AW)
    —may he bless(AX) these boys.(AY)
May they be called by my name
    and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac,(AZ)
and may they increase greatly
    on the earth.”(BA)
