⁵⁵ When all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread. Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph; what he says to you, do.” ⁵⁶ And since the famine had spread over all the land, Joseph opened all the storehouses^[a] and sold to the Egyptians, for the famine was severe in the land of Egypt.^{(A) 57} Moreover, all the world came to Joseph in Egypt to buy grain, because the famine became severe throughout the world.

¹⁷ Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Say to your brothers, ‘Do this: load your animals and go back to the land of Canaan. ¹⁸ Take your father and your households and come to me, so that I may give you the best of the land of Egypt, and you may enjoy the fat of the land.’^{(A) 19} You are further charged to say, ‘Do this: take wagons from the land of Egypt for your little ones and for your wives, and bring your father, and come. ²⁰ Give no thought to your possessions, for the best of all the land of Egypt is yours.’ ”

⁵ Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you.

⁶ The land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and your brothers in the best part of the land; let them live in the land of Goshen; and if you know that there are capable men among them, put them in charge of my livestock.”^(A)

The Israelites Are Oppressed

⁸ Now a new king arose over Egypt who did not know Joseph.^(A)
