Jacob’s Return to Bethel
35 Then God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to (A)Bethel and dwell there; and make an altar there to God, (B)who appeared to you (C)when you fled from the face of Esau your brother.”
2 And Jacob said to his (D)household and to all who were with him, “Put away (E)the foreign gods that are among you, (F)purify yourselves, and change your garments. 3 Then let us arise and go up to Bethel; and I will make an altar there to God, (G)who answered me in the day of my distress (H)and has been with me in the way which I have gone.” 4 So they gave Jacob all the foreign [a]gods which were in their hands, and the (I)earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under (J)the terebinth tree which was by Shechem.
5 And they journeyed, and (K)the terror of God was upon the cities that were all around them, and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob. 6 So Jacob came to (L)Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him. 7 And he (M)built an altar there and called the place [b]El Bethel, because (N)there God appeared to him when he fled from the face of his brother.
8 Now (O)Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, and she was buried below Bethel under the terebinth tree. So the name of it was called [c]Allon Bachuth.
9 Then (P)God appeared to Jacob again, when he came from Padan Aram, and (Q)blessed him. 10 And God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; (R)your name shall not be called Jacob anymore, (S)but Israel shall be your name.” So He called his name Israel. 11 Also God said to him: (T)“I am God Almighty. (U)Be fruitful and multiply; (V)a nation and a company of nations shall proceed from you, and kings shall come from your body. 12 The (W)land which I gave Abraham and Isaac I give to you; and to your descendants after you I give this land.” 13 Then God (X)went[d] up from him in the place where He talked with him. 14 So Jacob (Y)set up a pillar in the place where He talked with him, a pillar of stone; and he poured a drink offering on it, and he poured oil on it. 15 And Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, (Z)Bethel.
Death of Rachel
16 Then they journeyed from Bethel. And when there was but a little distance to go to Ephrath, Rachel labored in childbirth, and she had hard labor. 17 Now it came to pass, when she was in hard labor, that the midwife said to her, “Do not fear; (AA)you will have this son also.” 18 And so it was, as her soul was departing (for she died), that she called his name [e]Ben-Oni; but his father called him [f]Benjamin. 19 So (AB)Rachel died and was buried on the way to (AC)Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). 20 And Jacob set a pillar on her grave, which is the pillar of Rachel’s grave (AD)to this day.
21 Then Israel journeyed and pitched his tent beyond (AE)the tower of Eder. 22 And it happened, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and (AF)lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine; and Israel heard about it.
Jacob’s Twelve Sons
Now the sons of Jacob were twelve: 23 the sons of Leah were (AG)Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, and Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun; 24 the sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin; 25 the sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s maidservant, were Dan and Naphtali; 26 and the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s maidservant, were Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Padan Aram.
Death of Isaac
27 Then Jacob came to his father Isaac at (AH)Mamre, or (AI)Kirjath Arba[g] (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had dwelt. 28 Now the days of Isaac were one hundred and eighty years. 29 So Isaac breathed his last and died, and (AJ)was [h]gathered to his people, being old and full of days. And (AK)his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
The Family of Esau(AL)
36 Now this is the genealogy of Esau, (AM)who is Edom. 2 (AN)Esau took his wives from the daughters of Canaan: Adah the daughter of Elon the (AO)Hittite; (AP)Aholibamah[i] the daughter of Anah, the daughter of Zibeon the Hivite; 3 and (AQ)Basemath, Ishmael’s daughter, sister of Nebajoth. 4 Now (AR)Adah bore Eliphaz to Esau, and Basemath bore Reuel. 5 And [j]Aholibamah bore Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah. These were the sons of Esau who were born to him in the land of Canaan.
6 Then Esau took his wives, his sons, his daughters, and all the persons of his household, his cattle and all his animals, and all his goods which he had gained in the land of Canaan, and went to a country away from the presence of his brother Jacob. 7 (AS)For their possessions were too great for them to dwell together, and (AT)the land where they were strangers could not support them because of their livestock. 8 So Esau dwelt in (AU)Mount Seir. (AV)Esau is Edom.
9 And this is the genealogy of Esau the father of the Edomites in Mount Seir. 10 These were the names of Esau’s sons: (AW)Eliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau, and Reuel the son of Basemath the wife of Esau. 11 And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, [k]Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz.
12 Now Timna was the concubine of Eliphaz, Esau’s son, and she bore (AX)Amalek to Eliphaz. These were the sons of Adah, Esau’s wife.
13 These were the sons of Reuel: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. These were the sons of Basemath, Esau’s wife.
14 These were the sons of [l]Aholibamah, Esau’s wife, the daughter of Anah, the daughter of Zibeon. And she bore to Esau: Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah.
The Chiefs of Edom
15 These were the chiefs of the sons of Esau. The sons of Eliphaz, the firstborn son of Esau, were Chief Teman, Chief Omar, Chief Zepho, Chief Kenaz, 16 [m]Chief Korah, Chief Gatam, and Chief Amalek. These were the chiefs of Eliphaz in the land of Edom. They were the sons of Adah.
17 These were the sons of Reuel, Esau’s son: Chief Nahath, Chief Zerah, Chief Shammah, and Chief Mizzah. These were the chiefs of Reuel in the land of Edom. These were the sons of Basemath, Esau’s wife.
18 And these were the sons of [n]Aholibamah, Esau’s wife: Chief Jeush, Chief Jaalam, and Chief Korah. These were the chiefs who descended from Aholibamah, Esau’s wife, the daughter of Anah. 19 These were the sons of Esau, who is Edom, and these were their chiefs.
The Sons of Seir
20 (AY)These were the sons of Seir (AZ)the Horite who inhabited the land: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, 21 Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. These were the chiefs of the Horites, the sons of Seir, in the land of Edom.
22 And the sons of Lotan were Hori and [o]Hemam. Lotan’s sister was Timna.
23 These were the sons of Shobal: [p]Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, [q]Shepho, and Onam.
24 These were the sons of Zibeon: both Ajah and Anah. This was the Anah who found the [r]water in the wilderness as he pastured (BA)the donkeys of his father Zibeon. 25 These were the children of Anah: Dishon and [s]Aholibamah the daughter of Anah.
26 These were the sons of [t]Dishon: [u]Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Cheran. 27 These were the sons of Ezer: Bilhan, Zaavan, and [v]Akan. 28 These were the sons of Dishan: (BB)Uz and Aran.
29 These were the chiefs of the Horites: Chief Lotan, Chief Shobal, Chief Zibeon, Chief Anah, 30 Chief Dishon, Chief Ezer, and Chief Dishan. These were the chiefs of the Horites, according to their chiefs in the land of Seir.
The Kings of Edom
31 (BC)Now these were the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before any king reigned over the children of Israel: 32 Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom, and the name of his city was Dinhabah. 33 And when Bela died, Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his place. 34 When Jobab died, Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his place. 35 And when Husham died, Hadad the son of Bedad, who attacked Midian in the field of Moab, reigned in his place. And the name of his city was Avith. 36 When Hadad died, Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his place. 37 And when Samlah died, Saul of (BD)Rehoboth-by-the-River reigned in his place. 38 When Saul died, Baal-Hanan the son of Achbor reigned in his place. 39 And when Baal-Hanan the son of Achbor died, [w]Hadar reigned in his place; and the name of his city was [x]Pau. His wife’s name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Mezahab.
The Chiefs of Esau
40 And these were the names of the chiefs of Esau, according to their families and their places, by their names: Chief Timnah, Chief [y]Alvah, Chief Jetheth, 41 Chief [z]Aholibamah, Chief Elah, Chief Pinon, 42 Chief Kenaz, Chief Teman, Chief Mibzar, 43 Chief Magdiel, and Chief Iram. These were the chiefs of Edom, according to their dwelling places in the land of their possession. Esau was the father of [aa]the Edomites.
Joseph Dreams of Greatness
37 Now Jacob dwelt in the land (BE)where his father was a [ab]stranger, in the land of Canaan. 2 This is the history of Jacob.
Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers. And the lad was with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives; and Joseph brought (BF)a bad report of them to his father.
3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was (BG)the son of his old age. Also he (BH)made him a tunic of many colors. 4 But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they (BI)hated him and could not speak peaceably to him.
5 Now Joseph had a dream, and he told it to his brothers; and they hated him even more. 6 So he said to them, “Please hear this dream which I have dreamed: 7 (BJ)There we were, binding sheaves in the field. Then behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and indeed your sheaves stood all around and bowed down to my sheaf.”
8 And his brothers said to him, “Shall you indeed reign over us? Or shall you indeed have dominion over us?” So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words.
9 Then he dreamed still another dream and told it to his brothers, and said, “Look, I have dreamed another dream. And this time, (BK)the sun, the moon, and the eleven stars bowed down to me.”
10 So he told it to his father and his brothers; and his father rebuked him and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall your mother and I and (BL)your brothers indeed come to bow down to the earth before you?” 11 And (BM)his brothers envied him, but his father (BN)kept the matter in mind.
Joseph Sold by His Brothers
12 Then his brothers went to feed their father’s flock in (BO)Shechem. 13 And Israel said to Joseph, “Are not your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem? Come, I will send you to them.”
So he said to him, “Here I am.”
14 Then he said to him, “Please go and see if it is well with your brothers and well with the flocks, and bring back word to me.” So he sent him out of the Valley of (BP)Hebron, and he went to Shechem.
15 Now a certain man found him, and there he was, wandering in the field. And the man asked him, saying, “What are you seeking?”
16 So he said, “I am seeking my brothers. (BQ)Please tell me where they are feeding their flocks.”
17 And the man said, “They have departed from here, for I heard them say, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’ ” So Joseph went after his brothers and found them in (BR)Dothan.
18 Now when they saw him afar off, even before he came near them, (BS)they conspired against him to kill him. 19 Then they said to one another, “Look, this [ac]dreamer is coming! 20 (BT)Come therefore, let us now kill him and cast him into some pit; and we shall say, ‘Some wild beast has devoured him.’ We shall see what will become of his dreams!”
21 But (BU)Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands, and said, “Let us not kill him.” 22 And Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit which is in the wilderness, and do not lay a hand on him”—that he might deliver him out of their hands, and bring him back to his father.
23 So it came to pass, when Joseph had come to his brothers, that they (BV)stripped Joseph of his tunic, the tunic of many colors that was on him. 24 Then they took him and cast him into a pit. And the pit was empty; there was no water in it.
25 (BW)And they sat down to eat a meal. Then they lifted their eyes and looked, and there was a company of (BX)Ishmaelites, coming from Gilead with their camels, bearing spices, (BY)balm, and myrrh, on their way to carry them down to Egypt. 26 So Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is there if we kill our brother and (BZ)conceal his blood? 27 Come and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and (CA)let not our hand be upon him, for he is (CB)our brother and (CC)our flesh.” And his brothers listened. 28 Then (CD)Midianite traders passed by; so the brothers pulled Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, (CE)and sold him to the Ishmaelites for (CF)twenty shekels of silver. And they took Joseph to Egypt.
29 Then Reuben returned to the pit, and indeed Joseph was not in the pit; and he (CG)tore his clothes. 30 And he returned to his brothers and said, “The lad (CH)is no more; and I, where shall I go?”
31 So they took (CI)Joseph’s tunic, killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the tunic in the blood. 32 Then they sent the tunic of many colors, and they brought it to their father and said, “We have found this. Do you know whether it is your son’s tunic or not?”
33 And he recognized it and said, “It is my son’s tunic. A (CJ)wild beast has devoured him. Without doubt Joseph is torn to pieces.” 34 Then Jacob (CK)tore his clothes, put sackcloth on his waist, and (CL)mourned for his son many days. 35 And all his sons and all his daughters (CM)arose to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted, and he said, “For (CN)I shall go down into the grave to my son in mourning.” Thus his father wept for him.
36 Now (CO)the [ad]Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard.
Judah and Tamar
38 It came to pass at that time that Judah departed from his brothers, and (CP)visited a certain Adullamite whose name was Hirah. 2 And Judah (CQ)saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was (CR)Shua, and he married her and went in to her. 3 So she conceived and bore a son, and he called his name (CS)Er. 4 She conceived again and bore a son, and she called his name (CT)Onan. 5 And she conceived yet again and bore a son, and called his name (CU)Shelah. He was at Chezib when she bore him.
6 Then Judah (CV)took a wife for Er his firstborn, and her name was (CW)Tamar. 7 But (CX)Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord, (CY)and the Lord killed him. 8 And Judah said to Onan, “Go in to (CZ)your brother’s wife and marry her, and raise up an heir to your brother.” 9 But Onan knew that the heir would not be (DA)his; and it came to pass, when he went in to his brother’s wife, that he emitted on the ground, lest he should give an heir to his brother. 10 And the thing which he did [ae]displeased the Lord; therefore He killed (DB)him also.
11 Then Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, (DC)“Remain a widow in your father’s house till my son Shelah is grown.” For he said, “Lest he also die like his brothers.” And Tamar went and dwelt (DD)in her father’s house.
12 Now in the process of time the daughter of Shua, Judah’s wife, died; and Judah (DE)was comforted, and went up to his sheepshearers at Timnah, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite. 13 And it was told Tamar, saying, “Look, your father-in-law is going up (DF)to Timnah to shear his sheep.” 14 So she took off her widow’s garments, covered herself with a veil and wrapped herself, and (DG)sat in an open place which was on the way to Timnah; for she saw (DH)that Shelah was grown, and she was not given to him as a wife. 15 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a harlot, because she had covered her face. 16 Then he turned to her by the way, and said, “Please let me come in to you”; for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law.
So she said, “What will you give me, that you may come in to me?”
17 And he said, (DI)“I will send a young goat from the flock.”
So she said, (DJ)“Will you give me a pledge till you send it?”
18 Then he said, “What pledge shall I give you?”
So she said, (DK)“Your signet and cord, and your staff that is in your hand.” Then he gave them to her, and went in to her, and she conceived by him. 19 So she arose and went away, and (DL)laid aside her veil and put on the garments of her widowhood.
20 And Judah sent the young goat by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman’s hand, but he did not find her. 21 Then he asked the men of that place, saying, “Where is the harlot who was [af]openly by the roadside?”
And they said, “There was no harlot in this place.”
22 So he returned to Judah and said, “I cannot find her. Also, the men of the place said there was no harlot in this place.”
23 Then Judah said, “Let her take them for herself, lest we be shamed; for I sent this young goat and you have not found her.”
24 And it came to pass, about three months after, that Judah was told, saying, “Tamar your daughter-in-law has (DM)played the harlot; furthermore she is [ag]with child by harlotry.”
So Judah said, “Bring her out (DN)and let her be burned!”
25 When she was brought out, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, “By the man to whom these belong, I am with child.” And she said, (DO)“Please determine whose these are—the signet and cord, and staff.”
26 So Judah (DP)acknowledged them and said, (DQ)“She has been more righteous than I, because (DR)I did not give her to Shelah my son.” And he (DS)never knew her again.
27 Now it came to pass, at the time for giving birth, that behold, twins were in her womb. 28 And so it was, when she was giving birth, that the one put out his hand; and the midwife took a scarlet thread and bound it on his hand, saying, “This one came out first.” 29 Then it happened, as he drew back his hand, that his brother came out unexpectedly; and she said, “How did you break through? This breach be upon you!” Therefore his name was called (DT)Perez.[ah] 30 Afterward his brother came out who had the scarlet thread on his hand. And his name was called (DU)Zerah.
Joseph a Slave in Egypt
39 Now Joseph had been taken (DV)down to Egypt. And (DW)Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, (DX)bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him down there. 2 (DY)The Lord was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. 3 And his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord (DZ)made all he did [ai]to prosper in his hand. 4 So Joseph (EA)found favor in his sight, and served him. Then he made him (EB)overseer of his house, and all that he had he put [aj]under his authority. 5 So it was, from the time that he had made him overseer of his house and all that he had, that (EC)the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the Lord was on all that he had in the house and in the field. 6 Thus he left all that he had in Joseph’s [ak]hand, and he did not know what he had except for the [al]bread which he ate.
Now Joseph (ED)was handsome in form and appearance.
7 And it came to pass after these things that his master’s wife [am]cast longing eyes on Joseph, and she said, (EE)“Lie with me.”
8 But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Look, my master does not know what is with me in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my hand. 9 There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. (EF)How then can I do this great wickedness, and (EG)sin against God?”
10 So it was, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he (EH)did not heed her, to lie with her or to be with her.
11 But it happened about this time, when Joseph went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the house was inside, 12 that she (EI)caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me.” But he left his garment in her hand, and fled and ran outside. 13 And so it was, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and fled outside, 14 that she called to the men of her house and spoke to them, saying, “See, he has brought in to us a (EJ)Hebrew to [an]mock us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice. 15 And it happened, when he heard that I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me, and fled and went outside.”
16 So she kept his garment with her until his master came home. 17 Then she (EK)spoke to him with words like these, saying, “The Hebrew servant whom you brought to us came in to me to mock me; 18 so it happened, as I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me and fled outside.”
19 So it was, when his master heard the words which his wife spoke to him, saying, “Your servant did to me after this manner,” that his (EL)anger was aroused. 20 Then Joseph’s master took him and (EM)put him into the (EN)prison, a place where the king’s prisoners were confined. And he was there in the prison. 21 But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him mercy, and He (EO)gave[ao] him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison. 22 And the keeper of the prison (EP)committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison; whatever they did there, it was his doing. 23 The keeper of the prison did not look into anything that was under [ap]Joseph’s authority, because (EQ)the Lord was with him; and whatever he did, the Lord made it prosper.
The Prisoners’ Dreams
40 It came to pass after these things that the (ER)butler and the baker of the king of Egypt offended their lord, the king of Egypt. 2 And Pharaoh was (ES)angry with his two officers, the chief butler and the chief baker. 3 (ET)So he put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the prison, the place where Joseph was confined. 4 And the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served them; so they were in custody for a while.
5 Then the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison, (EU)had a dream, both of them, each man’s dream in one night and each man’s dream with its own interpretation. 6 And Joseph came in to them in the morning and looked at them, and saw that they were [aq]sad. 7 So he asked Pharaoh’s officers who were with him in the custody of his lord’s house, saying, (EV)“Why do you look so sad today?”
8 And they said to him, (EW)“We each have had a dream, and there is no interpreter of it.”
So Joseph said to them, (EX)“Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell them to me, please.”
9 Then the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, “Behold, in my dream a vine was before me, 10 and in the vine were three branches; it was as though it budded, its blossoms shot forth, and its clusters brought forth ripe grapes. 11 Then Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.”
12 And Joseph said to him, (EY)“This is the interpretation of it: The three branches (EZ)are three days. 13 Now within three days Pharaoh will (FA)lift up your head and restore you to your [ar]place, and you will put Pharaoh’s cup in his hand according to the former manner, when you were his butler. 14 But (FB)remember me when it is well with you, and (FC)please show kindness to me; make mention of me to Pharaoh, and get me out of this house. 15 For indeed I was (FD)stolen away from the land of the Hebrews; (FE)and also I have done nothing here that they should put me into the dungeon.”
16 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said to Joseph, “I also was in my dream, and there were three [as]white baskets on my head. 17 In the uppermost basket were all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, and the birds ate them out of the basket on my head.”
18 So Joseph answered and said, (FF)“This is the interpretation of it: The three baskets are three days. 19 (FG)Within three days Pharaoh will lift [at]off your head from you and (FH)hang you on a tree; and the birds will eat your flesh from you.”
20 Now it came to pass on the third day, which was Pharaoh’s (FI)birthday, that he (FJ)made a feast for all his servants; and he (FK)lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants. 21 Then he (FL)restored the chief butler to his butlership again, and (FM)he placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand. 22 But he (FN)hanged the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted to them. 23 Yet the chief butler did not remember Joseph, but (FO)forgot him.

Jacob Returns to Bethel
35 Then God said to Jacob, “Go up to Bethel(A) and settle there, and build an altar(B) there to God,(C) who appeared to you(D) when you were fleeing from your brother Esau.”(E)
2 So Jacob said to his household(F) and to all who were with him, “Get rid of the foreign gods(G) you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes.(H) 3 Then come, let us go up to Bethel, where I will build an altar to God,(I) who answered me in the day of my distress(J) and who has been with me wherever I have gone.(K)” 4 So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears,(L) and Jacob buried them under the oak(M) at Shechem.(N) 5 Then they set out, and the terror of God(O) fell on the towns all around them so that no one pursued them.(P)
6 Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz(Q) (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan.(R) 7 There he built an altar,(S) and he called the place El Bethel,[a](T) because it was there that God revealed himself to him(U) when he was fleeing from his brother.(V)
8 Now Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse,(W) died and was buried under the oak(X) outside Bethel.(Y) So it was named Allon Bakuth.[b]
9 After Jacob returned from Paddan Aram,[c](Z) God appeared to him again and blessed him.(AA) 10 God said to him, “Your name is Jacob,[d] but you will no longer be called Jacob; your name will be Israel.[e]”(AB) So he named him Israel.
11 And God said to him, “I am God Almighty[f];(AC) be fruitful and increase in number.(AD) A nation(AE) and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will be among your descendants.(AF) 12 The land I gave to Abraham and Isaac I also give to you, and I will give this land to your descendants after you.(AG)”(AH) 13 Then God went up from him(AI) at the place where he had talked with him.
14 Jacob set up a stone pillar(AJ) at the place where God had talked with him, and he poured out a drink offering(AK) on it; he also poured oil on it.(AL) 15 Jacob called the place where God had talked with him Bethel.[g](AM)
The Deaths of Rachel and Isaac(AN)
16 Then they moved on from Bethel. While they were still some distance from Ephrath,(AO) Rachel(AP) began to give birth and had great difficulty. 17 And as she was having great difficulty in childbirth, the midwife(AQ) said to her, “Don’t despair, for you have another son.”(AR) 18 As she breathed her last—for she was dying—she named her son Ben-Oni.[h](AS) But his father named him Benjamin.[i](AT)
19 So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath(AU) (that is, Bethlehem(AV)). 20 Over her tomb Jacob set up a pillar, and to this day(AW) that pillar marks Rachel’s tomb.(AX)
21 Israel moved on again and pitched his tent beyond Migdal Eder.(AY) 22 While Israel was living in that region, Reuben went in and slept with his father’s concubine(AZ) Bilhah,(BA) and Israel heard of it.
Jacob had twelve sons:
23 The sons of Leah:(BB)
Reuben the firstborn(BC) of Jacob,
Simeon, Levi, Judah,(BD) Issachar and Zebulun.(BE)
24 The sons of Rachel:
25 The sons of Rachel’s servant Bilhah:(BH)
Dan and Naphtali.(BI)

These were the sons of Jacob,(BM) who were born to him in Paddan Aram.(BN)
27 Jacob came home to his father Isaac(BO) in Mamre,(BP) near Kiriath Arba(BQ) (that is, Hebron),(BR) where Abraham and Isaac had stayed.(BS) 28 Isaac lived a hundred and eighty years.(BT) 29 Then he breathed his last and died and was gathered to his people,(BU) old and full of years.(BV) And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.(BW)
Esau’s Descendants(BX)(BY)
36 This is the account(BZ) of the family line of Esau (that is, Edom).(CA)
2 Esau took his wives from the women of Canaan:(CB) Adah daughter of Elon the Hittite,(CC) and Oholibamah(CD) daughter of Anah(CE) and granddaughter of Zibeon the Hivite(CF)— 3 also Basemath(CG) daughter of Ishmael and sister of Nebaioth.(CH)
4 Adah bore Eliphaz to Esau, Basemath bore Reuel,(CI) 5 and Oholibamah bore Jeush, Jalam and Korah.(CJ) These were the sons of Esau, who were born to him in Canaan.
6 Esau took his wives and sons and daughters and all the members of his household, as well as his livestock and all his other animals and all the goods he had acquired in Canaan,(CK) and moved to a land some distance from his brother Jacob.(CL) 7 Their possessions were too great for them to remain together; the land where they were staying could not support them both because of their livestock.(CM) 8 So Esau(CN) (that is, Edom)(CO) settled in the hill country of Seir.(CP)
9 This is the account(CQ) of the family line of Esau the father of the Edomites(CR) in the hill country of Seir.
10 These are the names of Esau’s sons:
Eliphaz, the son of Esau’s wife Adah, and Reuel, the son of Esau’s wife Basemath.(CS)

Teman,(CU) Omar, Zepho, Gatam and Kenaz.(CV)
12 Esau’s son Eliphaz also had a concubine(CW) named Timna, who bore him Amalek.(CX) These were grandsons of Esau’s wife Adah.(CY)

The sons of Eliphaz the firstborn of Esau:

19 These were the sons of Esau(DM) (that is, Edom),(DN) and these were their chiefs.(DO)
20 These were the sons of Seir the Horite,(DP) who were living in the region:
Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah,(DQ) 21 Dishon, Ezer and Dishan. These sons of Seir in Edom were Horite chiefs.(DR)
22 The sons of Lotan:
Hori and Homam.[k] Timna was Lotan’s sister.
23 The sons of Shobal:
Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho and Onam.
24 The sons of Zibeon:(DS)
Aiah and Anah. This is the Anah who discovered the hot springs[l](DT) in the desert while he was grazing the donkeys(DU) of his father Zibeon.
25 The children of Anah:(DV)
Dishon and Oholibamah(DW) daughter of Anah.
26 The sons of Dishon[m]:
Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran and Keran.
27 The sons of Ezer:
Bilhan, Zaavan and Akan.
28 The sons of Dishan:
Uz and Aran.
29 These were the Horite chiefs:
Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah,(DX) 30 Dishon, Ezer and Dishan. These were the Horite chiefs,(DY) according to their divisions, in the land of Seir.
The Rulers of Edom(DZ)
31 These were the kings who reigned in Edom before any Israelite king(EA) reigned:
32 Bela son of Beor became king of Edom. His city was named Dinhabah.
33 When Bela died, Jobab son of Zerah from Bozrah(EB) succeeded him as king.
34 When Jobab died, Husham from the land of the Temanites(EC) succeeded him as king.
35 When Husham died, Hadad son of Bedad, who defeated Midian(ED) in the country of Moab,(EE) succeeded him as king. His city was named Avith.
36 When Hadad died, Samlah from Masrekah succeeded him as king.
37 When Samlah died, Shaul from Rehoboth(EF) on the river succeeded him as king.
38 When Shaul died, Baal-Hanan son of Akbor succeeded him as king.
39 When Baal-Hanan son of Akbor died, Hadad[n] succeeded him as king. His city was named Pau, and his wife’s name was Mehetabel daughter of Matred, the daughter of Me-Zahab.
40 These were the chiefs(EG) descended from Esau, by name, according to their clans and regions:
Timna, Alvah, Jetheth, 41 Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon, 42 Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar, 43 Magdiel and Iram. These were the chiefs of Edom, according to their settlements in the land they occupied.
This is the family line of Esau, the father of the Edomites.(EH)
Joseph’s Dreams
37 Jacob lived in the land where his father had stayed,(EI) the land of Canaan.(EJ)
2 This is the account(EK) of Jacob’s family line.
Joseph,(EL) a young man of seventeen,(EM) was tending the flocks(EN) with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah(EO) and the sons of Zilpah,(EP) his father’s wives, and he brought their father a bad report(EQ) about them.
3 Now Israel(ER) loved Joseph more than any of his other sons,(ES) because he had been born to him in his old age;(ET) and he made an ornate[o] robe(EU) for him.(EV) 4 When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him(EW) and could not speak a kind word to him.
5 Joseph had a dream,(EX) and when he told it to his brothers,(EY) they hated him all the more.(EZ) 6 He said to them, “Listen to this dream I had: 7 We were binding sheaves(FA) of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.”(FB)
8 His brothers said to him, “Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?”(FC) And they hated him all the more(FD) because of his dream and what he had said.
9 Then he had another dream,(FE) and he told it to his brothers. “Listen,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars(FF) were bowing down to me.”(FG)
10 When he told his father as well as his brothers,(FH) his father rebuked(FI) him and said, “What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?”(FJ) 11 His brothers were jealous of him,(FK) but his father kept the matter in mind.(FL)
Joseph Sold by His Brothers
12 Now his brothers had gone to graze their father’s flocks near Shechem,(FM) 13 and Israel(FN) said to Joseph, “As you know, your brothers are grazing the flocks near Shechem.(FO) Come, I am going to send you to them.”
“Very well,” he replied.
14 So he said to him, “Go and see if all is well with your brothers(FP) and with the flocks, and bring word back to me.” Then he sent him off from the Valley of Hebron.(FQ)
When Joseph arrived at Shechem, 15 a man found him wandering around in the fields and asked him, “What are you looking for?”
16 He replied, “I’m looking for my brothers. Can you tell me where they are grazing their flocks?”
17 “They have moved on from here,” the man answered. “I heard them say, ‘Let’s go to Dothan.(FR)’”
So Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan. 18 But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him.(FS)
19 “Here comes that dreamer!(FT)” they said to each other. 20 “Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns(FU) and say that a ferocious animal(FV) devoured him.(FW) Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.”(FX)
21 When Reuben(FY) heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. “Let’s not take his life,” he said.(FZ) 22 “Don’t shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern(GA) here in the wilderness, but don’t lay a hand on him.” Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father.(GB)
23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe—the ornate robe(GC) he was wearing— 24 and they took him and threw him into the cistern.(GD) The cistern was empty; there was no water in it.
25 As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites(GE) coming from Gilead.(GF) Their camels were loaded with spices, balm(GG) and myrrh,(GH) and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt.(GI)
26 Judah(GJ) said to his brothers, “What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood?(GK) 27 Come, let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all, he is our brother,(GL) our own flesh and blood.(GM)” His brothers agreed.
28 So when the Midianite(GN) merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern(GO) and sold(GP) him for twenty shekels[p] of silver(GQ) to the Ishmaelites,(GR) who took him to Egypt.(GS)
29 When Reuben returned to the cistern and saw that Joseph was not there, he tore his clothes.(GT) 30 He went back to his brothers and said, “The boy isn’t there! Where can I turn now?”(GU)
31 Then they got Joseph’s robe,(GV) slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood.(GW) 32 They took the ornate robe(GX) back to their father and said, “We found this. Examine it to see whether it is your son’s robe.”
33 He recognized it and said, “It is my son’s robe! Some ferocious animal(GY) has devoured him. Joseph has surely been torn to pieces.”(GZ)
34 Then Jacob tore his clothes,(HA) put on sackcloth(HB) and mourned for his son many days.(HC) 35 All his sons and daughters came to comfort him,(HD) but he refused to be comforted.(HE) “No,” he said, “I will continue to mourn until I join my son(HF) in the grave.(HG)” So his father wept for him.
36 Meanwhile, the Midianites[q](HH) sold Joseph(HI) in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard.(HJ)
Judah and Tamar
38 At that time, Judah(HK) left his brothers and went down to stay with a man of Adullam(HL) named Hirah.(HM) 2 There Judah met the daughter of a Canaanite man named Shua.(HN) He married her and made love to her; 3 she became pregnant and gave birth to a son, who was named Er.(HO) 4 She conceived again and gave birth to a son and named him Onan.(HP) 5 She gave birth to still another son and named him Shelah.(HQ) It was at Kezib that she gave birth to him.
6 Judah got a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.(HR) 7 But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the Lord’s sight;(HS) so the Lord put him to death.(HT)
8 Then Judah said to Onan, “Sleep with your brother’s wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to raise up offspring for your brother.”(HU) 9 But Onan knew that the child would not be his; so whenever he slept with his brother’s wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from providing offspring for his brother. 10 What he did was wicked in the Lord’s sight; so the Lord put him to death also.(HV)
11 Judah then said to his daughter-in-law(HW) Tamar,(HX) “Live as a widow in your father’s household(HY) until my son Shelah(HZ) grows up.”(IA) For he thought, “He may die too, just like his brothers.” So Tamar went to live in her father’s household.
12 After a long time Judah’s wife, the daughter of Shua,(IB) died. When Judah had recovered from his grief, he went up to Timnah,(IC) to the men who were shearing his sheep,(ID) and his friend Hirah the Adullamite(IE) went with him.
13 When Tamar(IF) was told, “Your father-in-law is on his way to Timnah to shear his sheep,”(IG) 14 she took off her widow’s clothes,(IH) covered herself with a veil(II) to disguise herself, and then sat down(IJ) at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah.(IK) For she saw that, though Shelah(IL) had now grown up, she had not been given to him as his wife.
15 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute,(IM) for she had covered her face. 16 Not realizing(IN) that she was his daughter-in-law,(IO) he went over to her by the roadside and said, “Come now, let me sleep with you.”(IP)
“And what will you give me to sleep with you?”(IQ) she asked.
17 “I’ll send you a young goat(IR) from my flock,” he said.
“Will you give me something as a pledge(IS) until you send it?” she asked.
18 He said, “What pledge should I give you?”
“Your seal(IT) and its cord, and the staff(IU) in your hand,” she answered. So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she became pregnant by him.(IV) 19 After she left, she took off her veil and put on her widow’s clothes(IW) again.
20 Meanwhile Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite(IX) in order to get his pledge(IY) back from the woman, but he did not find her. 21 He asked the men who lived there, “Where is the shrine prostitute(IZ) who was beside the road at Enaim?”
“There hasn’t been any shrine prostitute here,” they said.
22 So he went back to Judah and said, “I didn’t find her. Besides, the men who lived there said, ‘There hasn’t been any shrine prostitute here.’”
23 Then Judah said, “Let her keep what she has,(JA) or we will become a laughingstock.(JB) After all, I did send her this young goat, but you didn’t find her.”
24 About three months later Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar is guilty of prostitution, and as a result she is now pregnant.”
Judah said, “Bring her out and have her burned to death!”(JC)
25 As she was being brought out, she sent a message to her father-in-law. “I am pregnant by the man who owns these,” she said. And she added, “See if you recognize whose seal and cord and staff these are.”(JD)
26 Judah recognized them and said, “She is more righteous than I,(JE) since I wouldn’t give her to my son Shelah.(JF)” And he did not sleep with her again.
27 When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb.(JG) 28 As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand; so the midwife(JH) took a scarlet thread and tied it on his wrist(JI) and said, “This one came out first.” 29 But when he drew back his hand, his brother came out,(JJ) and she said, “So this is how you have broken out!” And he was named Perez.[r](JK) 30 Then his brother, who had the scarlet thread on his wrist,(JL) came out. And he was named Zerah.[s](JM)
Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife
39 Now Joseph(JN) had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard,(JO) bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.(JP)
2 The Lord was with Joseph(JQ) so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. 3 When his master saw that the Lord was with him(JR) and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did,(JS) 4 Joseph found favor in his eyes(JT) and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household,(JU) and he entrusted to his care everything he owned.(JV) 5 From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the household(JW) of the Egyptian because of Joseph.(JX) The blessing of the Lord was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field.(JY) 6 So Potiphar left everything he had in Joseph’s care;(JZ) with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate.
Now Joseph was well-built and handsome,(KA) 7 and after a while his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me!”(KB)
8 But he refused.(KC) “With me in charge,” he told her, “my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care.(KD) 9 No one is greater in this house than I am.(KE) My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?”(KF) 10 And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused(KG) to go to bed with her or even be with her.
11 One day he went into the house to attend to his duties,(KH) and none of the household servants(KI) was inside. 12 She caught him by his cloak(KJ) and said, “Come to bed with me!”(KK) But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.(KL)
13 When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house, 14 she called her household servants.(KM) “Look,” she said to them, “this Hebrew(KN) has been brought to us to make sport of us!(KO) He came in here to sleep with me, but I screamed.(KP) 15 When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”(KQ)
16 She kept his cloak beside her until his master came home. 17 Then she told him this story:(KR) “That Hebrew(KS) slave(KT) you brought us came to me to make sport of me. 18 But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”
19 When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, “This is how your slave treated me,” he burned with anger.(KU) 20 Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison,(KV) the place where the king’s prisoners were confined.
But while Joseph was there in the prison, 21 the Lord was with him;(KW) he showed him kindness(KX) and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.(KY) 22 So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there.(KZ) 23 The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s(LA) care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.(LB)
The Cupbearer and the Baker
40 Some time later, the cupbearer(LC) and the baker(LD) of the king of Egypt offended their master, the king of Egypt. 2 Pharaoh was angry(LE) with his two officials,(LF) the chief cupbearer and the chief baker, 3 and put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard,(LG) in the same prison where Joseph was confined. 4 The captain of the guard(LH) assigned them to Joseph,(LI) and he attended them.
After they had been in custody(LJ) for some time, 5 each of the two men—the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were being held in prison—had a dream(LK) the same night, and each dream had a meaning of its own.(LL)
6 When Joseph came to them the next morning, he saw that they were dejected. 7 So he asked Pharaoh’s officials who were in custody(LM) with him in his master’s house, “Why do you look so sad today?”(LN)
8 “We both had dreams,” they answered, “but there is no one to interpret them.”(LO)
Then Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God?(LP) Tell me your dreams.”
9 So the chief cupbearer(LQ) told Joseph his dream. He said to him, “In my dream I saw a vine in front of me, 10 and on the vine were three branches. As soon as it budded, it blossomed,(LR) and its clusters ripened into grapes. 11 Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes, squeezed them into Pharaoh’s cup and put the cup in his hand.”
12 “This is what it means,(LS)” Joseph said to him. “The three branches are three days.(LT) 13 Within three days(LU) Pharaoh will lift up your head(LV) and restore you to your position, and you will put Pharaoh’s cup in his hand, just as you used to do when you were his cupbearer.(LW) 14 But when all goes well with you, remember me(LX) and show me kindness;(LY) mention me to Pharaoh(LZ) and get me out of this prison. 15 I was forcibly carried off from the land of the Hebrews,(MA) and even here I have done nothing to deserve being put in a dungeon.”(MB)
16 When the chief baker(MC) saw that Joseph had given a favorable interpretation,(MD) he said to Joseph, “I too had a dream: On my head were three baskets(ME) of bread.[t] 17 In the top basket were all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating them out of the basket on my head.”
18 “This is what it means,” Joseph said. “The three baskets are three days.(MF) 19 Within three days(MG) Pharaoh will lift off your head(MH) and impale your body on a pole.(MI) And the birds will eat away your flesh.”(MJ)
20 Now the third day(MK) was Pharaoh’s birthday,(ML) and he gave a feast for all his officials.(MM) He lifted up the heads of the chief cupbearer and the chief baker(MN) in the presence of his officials: 21 He restored the chief cupbearer(MO) to his position,(MP) so that he once again put the cup into Pharaoh’s hand(MQ)— 22 but he impaled the chief baker,(MR) just as Joseph had said to them in his interpretation.(MS)
23 The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot him.(MT)
