⁷ Now the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it; and the men were grieved, and they were very angry because he had done a ^[a](A)disgraceful thing in Israel ^[b]by lying with Jacob’s daughter, for such a thing ought not to be done.

²⁹ ‘^(A)Do not ^[a]profane your daughter by making her a harlot, so that the land will not fall to harlotry and the land become full of lewdness.

^9 (A)Also the daughter of any priest, if she profanes herself by harlotry, she profanes her father; she shall be burned with fire.

¹⁷ “^(A)None of the daughters of Israel shall be a cult prostitute, ^(B)nor shall any of the sons of Israel be a cult prostitute. ¹⁸ You shall not bring the hire of a harlot or the wages of a ^[a](C)dog into the house of Yahweh your God for any votive offering, for both of these are an abomination to Yahweh your God.

⁵ Then the ^(A)men of Gibeah rose up against me and surrounded the house at night because of me. They intended to kill me; instead, they ^(B)violated my concubine, and she died. ⁶ And I ^(C)seized my concubine and cut her in pieces and sent her throughout the land of Israel’s inheritance; for ^(D)they have committed a lewd and disgraceful act in Israel. ⁷ Behold, all you sons of Israel, ^(E)give your advice and counsel here.”

⁸ Then all the people arose as one man, saying, “Not one of us will go to his tent, nor will any of us turn aside to his house. ⁹ But now this is the thing which we will do to Gibeah; we will go up against it by lot. ¹⁰ And we will take 10 men out of 100 throughout the tribes of Israel, and 100 out of 1,000, and 1,000 out of 10,000 in order to take up provisions for the people, that when they come to ^[a]Gibeah of Benjamin, they may do to them according to all the disgraceful acts that they have done in Israel.”
