Genesis 3:8-19

New Living Translation

⁸When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man^[a] and his wife heard the Lord God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the Lord God among the trees. ⁹Then the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”

¹⁰He replied, “I heard you walking in the garden, so I hid. I was afraid because I was naked.”

¹¹“Who told you that you were naked?” the Lord God asked. “Have you eaten from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat?”

¹²The man replied, “It was the woman you gave me who gave me the fruit, and I ate it.”

¹³Then the Lord God asked the woman, “What have you done?”

“The serpent deceived me,” she replied. “That’s why I ate it.”

¹⁴Then the Lord God said to the serpent,

“Because you have done this, you are cursed
    more than all animals, domestic and wild.
You will crawl on your belly,
    groveling in the dust as long as you live.
¹⁵And I will cause hostility between you and the woman,
    and between your offspring and her offspring.
He will strike^[b] your head,
    and you will strike his heel.”

¹⁶Then he said to the woman,

“I will sharpen the pain of your pregnancy,
and in pain you will give birth.
And you will desire to control your husband,
but he will rule over you.^[c]”

¹⁷And to the man he said,

“Since you listened to your wife and ate from the tree
    whose fruit I commanded you not to eat,
the ground is cursed because of you.
    All your life you will struggle to scratch a living from it.
¹⁸It will grow thorns and thistles for you,
    though you will eat of its grains.
¹⁹By the sweat of your brow
    will you have food to eat
until you return to the ground
    from which you were made.
For you were made from dust,
    and to dust you will return.”

⁸And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool^[a] of the day, and the man and his wife ^(A)hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. ⁹But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”^[b] ¹⁰And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, ^(B)because I was naked, and I hid myself.” ¹¹He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” ¹²The man said, ^(C)“The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” ¹³Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, ^(D)“The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

¹⁴The Lord God said to the serpent,

“Because you have done this,
    cursed are you above all livestock
    and above all beasts of the field;
on your belly you shall go,
    and ^(E)dust you shall eat
    all the days of your life.
¹⁵I will put enmity between you and the woman,
    and between your offspring^[c] and ^(F)her offspring;
^(G)he shall bruise your head,
    and you shall bruise his heel.”

¹⁶To the woman he said,

“I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing;
^(H)in pain you shall bring forth children.
^(I)Your desire shall be contrary to^[d] your husband,
but he shall ^(J)rule over you.”

¹⁷And to Adam he said,

“Because you have listened to the voice of your wife
    and have eaten of the tree
^(K)of which I commanded you,
    ‘You shall not eat of it,’
^(L)cursed is the ground because of you;
    ^(M)in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life;
¹⁸thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you;
    and you shall eat the plants of the field.
¹⁹By the sweat of your face
    you shall eat bread,
till you return to the ground,
    for out of it you were taken;
^(N)for you are dust,
    and ^(O)to dust you shall return.”

⁸Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking^(A) in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid^(B) from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. ⁹But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”^(C)

¹⁰He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid^(D) because I was naked;^(E) so I hid.”

¹¹And he said, “Who told you that you were naked?^(F) Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?^(G)”

¹²The man said, “The woman you put here with me^(H)—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

¹³Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”

The woman said, “The serpent deceived me,^(I) and I ate.”

¹⁴So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this,

“Cursed^(J) are you above all livestock
    and all wild animals!
You will crawl on your belly
    and you will eat dust^(K)
    all the days of your life.
¹⁵And I will put enmity
    between you and the woman,
    and between your offspring^[a]^(L) and hers;^(M)
he will crush^[b] your head,^(N)
    and you will strike his heel.”

¹⁶To the woman he said,

“I will make your pains in childbearing very severe;
with painful labor you will give birth to children.^(O)
Your desire will be for your husband,
and he will rule over you.^(P)”

¹⁷To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’^(Q)

“Cursed^(R) is the ground^(S) because of you;
    through painful toil^(T) you will eat food from it
    all the days of your life.^(U)
¹⁸It will produce thorns and thistles^(V) for you,
    and you will eat the plants of the field.^(W)
¹⁹By the sweat of your brow^(X)
    you will eat your food^(Y)
until you return to the ground,
    since from it you were taken;
for dust you are
    and to dust you will return.”^(Z)
