17 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’;

(A)Cursed is the ground because of you;
(B)In [a]toil you will eat of it
All the days of your life.
18 “Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you;
And you will eat the [b]plants of the field;
19 By the sweat of your face
You will eat bread,
Till you (C)return to the ground,
Because (D)from it you were taken;
For you are dust,
And to dust you shall return.”

20 Now the man called his wife’s name [c](E)Eve, because she was the mother of all the living. 21 The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them.

22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of (F)Us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might stretch out his hand, and take also from (G)the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”— 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken. 24 So (H)He drove the man out; and at the (I)east of the garden of Eden He stationed the (J)cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to (K)the tree of life.

22 “Now the generation to come, your sons who rise up after you and (A)the foreigner who comes from a distant land, when they see the plagues of the land and the diseases with which the Lord has [a]afflicted it, will say, 23 ‘All its land is (B)brimstone and salt, (C)a burning waste, [b]unsown and unproductive, and no grass grows in it, like the overthrow of (D)Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the Lord overthrew in His anger and in His wrath.’ 24 All the nations will say, ‘(E)Why has the Lord done thus to this land? Why this great [c]outburst of anger?’ 25 Then men will say, ‘(F)Because they forsook the covenant of the Lord, the God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt. 26 They went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods whom they have not known and whom He had not [d]allotted to them. 27 Therefore, the anger of the Lord burned against that land, (G)to bring upon it every curse which is written in this book; 28 and (H)the Lord uprooted them from their land in anger and in fury and in great wrath, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.’

29 (I)The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but (J)the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may observe all the words of this law.
