11 At sunset he came to a holy place[a] and camped there. He lay down to sleep, resting his head on a stone. 12 (A)He dreamed that he saw a stairway reaching from earth to heaven, with angels going up and coming down on it. 13 (B)And there was the Lord standing beside him.[b] “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham and Isaac,” he said. “I will give to you and to your descendants this land on which you are lying. 14 (C)They will be as numerous as the specks of dust on the earth. They will extend their territory in all directions, and through you and your descendants I will bless all the nations.[c] 15 Remember, I will be with you and protect you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done all that I have promised you.”

16 Jacob woke up and said, “The Lord is here! He is in this place, and I didn't know it!” 17 He was afraid and said, “What a terrifying place this is! It must be the house of God; it must be the gate that opens into heaven.”

11 When he reached a certain place,(A) he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head(B) and lay down to sleep. 12 He had a dream(C) in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.(D) 13 There above it[a] stood the Lord,(E) and he said: “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac.(F) I will give you and your descendants the land(G) on which you are lying.(H) 14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you(I) will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south.(J) All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.[b](K) 15 I am with you(L) and will watch over you(M) wherever you go,(N) and I will bring you back to this land.(O) I will not leave you(P) until I have done what I have promised you.(Q)(R)

16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep,(S) he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” 17 He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place!(T) This is none other than the house of God;(U) this is the gate of heaven.”
