The Promise Reaffirmed to Isaac

26 There was another famine in the land in addition to the one that had occurred in Abraham’s time.(A) And Isaac went to Abimelech, king of the Philistines, at Gerar.(B) The Lord appeared to him and said, “Do not go down to Egypt. Live in the land that I tell you about; stay in this land as an alien, and I will be with you and bless you.(C) For I will give all these lands to you and your offspring,(D) and I will confirm the oath that I swore to your father Abraham.(E) I will make your offspring as numerous as the stars of the sky, I will give your offspring all these lands, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed[a] by your offspring,(F) because Abraham listened to me and kept my mandate, my commands, my statutes, and my instructions.”(G) So Isaac settled in Gerar.

Isaac’s Deception

When the men of the place asked about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,”(H) for he was afraid to say “my wife,” thinking,(I) “The men of the place will kill me on account of Rebekah, for she is a beautiful woman.”(J) When Isaac had been there for some time, Abimelech king of the Philistines looked down from the window and was surprised to see[b] Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah.

Abimelech sent for Isaac and said, “So she is really your wife! How could you say, ‘She is my sister’?”

Isaac answered him, “Because I thought I might die on account of her.”

10 Then Abimelech said, “What have you done to us? One of the people could easily have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt on us.”(K) 11 So Abimelech warned all the people, “Whoever harms this man or his wife will certainly be put to death.”

Conflicts over Wells

12 Isaac sowed seed in that land, and in that year he reaped[c] a hundred times what was sown. The Lord blessed him,(L) 13 and the man became rich and kept getting richer until he was very wealthy. 14 He had flocks of sheep, herds of cattle, and many slaves, and the Philistines were envious of him. 15 Philistines stopped up all the wells that his father’s servants had dug in the days of his father Abraham,(M) filling them with dirt. 16 And Abimelech said to Isaac, “Leave us, for you are much too powerful for us.”[d]

17 So Isaac left there, camped in the Gerar Valley, and lived there. 18 Isaac reopened the wells that had been dug in the days of his father Abraham and that the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died. He gave them the same names his father had given them. 19 Then Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and found a well of spring[e] water there. 20 But the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac’s herdsmen and said, “The water is ours!” So he named the well Esek[f] because they argued with him.(N) 21 Then they dug another well and quarreled over that one also, so he named it Sitnah.[g] 22 He moved from there and dug another, and they did not quarrel over it. He named it Rehoboth[h] and said, “For now the Lord has made space for us, and we will be fruitful in the land.”

The Lord Appears to Isaac

23 From there he went up to Beer-sheba, 24 and the Lord appeared to him that night and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham.(O) Do not be afraid, for I am with you.(P) I will bless you and multiply your offspring because of my servant Abraham.”

25 So he built an altar there,(Q) called on the name of the Lord, and pitched his tent there. Isaac’s servants also dug a well there.(R)

Covenant with Abimelech

26 Now Abimelech came to him from Gerar with Ahuzzath his adviser and Phicol the commander of his army.(S) 27 Isaac said to them, “Why have you come to me? You hated me and sent me away from you.”

28 They replied, “We have clearly seen how the Lord has been with you. We think there should be an oath between two parties—between us and you. Let us make a covenant with you: 29 You will not harm us, just as we have not harmed you but have done only what was good to you, sending you away in peace. You are now blessed by the Lord.”(T)

30 So he prepared a banquet for them, and they ate and drank. 31 They got up early in the morning and swore an oath to each other.[i](U) Isaac sent them on their way, and they left him in peace. 32 On that same day Isaac’s servants came to tell him about the well they had dug, saying to him, “We have found water!” (V) 33 He called it Sheba.[j] Therefore the name of the city is still Beer-sheba[k](W) today.

Esau’s Wives

34 When Esau was forty years old, he took as his wives Judith daughter of Beeri the Hethite, and Basemath daughter of Elon the Hethite.(X) 35 They made life bitter[l] for Isaac and Rebekah.(Y)

The Stolen Blessing

27 When Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he could not see,(Z) he called his older son Esau and said to him, “My son.”

And he answered, “Here I am.”

He said, “Look, I am old and do not know the day of my death. So now take your hunting gear, your quiver and bow, and go out in the field to hunt some game for me.(AA) Then make me a delicious meal that I love and bring it to me to eat, so that I can bless you before I die.”(AB)

Now Rebekah was listening to what Isaac said to his son Esau. So while Esau went to the field to hunt some game to bring in, Rebekah said to her son Jacob, “Listen! I heard your father talking with your brother Esau. He said, ‘Bring me game and make a delicious meal for me to eat so that I can bless you in the Lord’s presence before I die.’ Now, my son, listen to me and do what I tell you. Go to the flock and bring me two choice young goats, and I will make them into a delicious meal for your father—the kind he loves. 10 Then take it to your father to eat so that he may bless you before he dies.”

11 Jacob answered Rebekah his mother, “Look, my brother Esau is a hairy man, but I am a man with smooth skin.(AC) 12 Suppose my father touches me. Then I will be revealed to him as a deceiver and bring a curse rather than a blessing on myself.”

13 His mother said to him, “Your curse be on me, my son. Just obey me and go get them for me.”

14 So he went and got the goats and brought them to his mother, and his mother made the delicious food his father loved. 15 Then Rebekah took the best clothes of her older son Esau, which were in the house, and had her younger son Jacob wear them. 16 She put the skins of the young goats on his hands and the smooth part of his neck. 17 Then she handed the delicious food and the bread she had made to her son Jacob.

18 When he came to his father, he said, “My father.”

And he answered, “Here I am. Who are you, my son?”

19 Jacob replied to his father, “I am Esau, your firstborn. I have done as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game so that you may bless me.”

20 But Isaac said to his son, “How did you ever find it so quickly, my son?”

He replied, “Because the Lord your God made it happen for me.”

21 Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come closer so I can touch you, my son. Are you really my son Esau or not?”

22 So Jacob came closer to his father Isaac. When he touched him, he said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” 23 He did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau; so he blessed him. 24 Again he asked, “Are you really my son Esau?”

And he replied, “I am.”

25 Then he said, “Bring it closer to me, and let me eat some of my son’s game so that I can bless you.” Jacob brought it closer to him, and he ate; he brought him wine, and he drank.

26 Then his father Isaac said to him, “Please come closer and kiss me, my son.” 27 So he came closer and kissed him. When Isaac smelled[m] his clothes, he blessed him and said:

Ah, the smell of my son
is like the smell of a field
that the Lord has blessed.
28 May God give to you—
from the dew of the sky(AD)
and from the richness of the land(AE)
an abundance of grain and new wine.(AF)
29 May peoples serve you(AG)
and nations bow in homage to you.
Be master over your relatives;
may your mother’s sons bow in homage to you.
Those who curse you will be cursed,
and those who bless you will be blessed.(AH)

30 As soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob and Jacob had left the presence of his father Isaac, his brother Esau arrived from his hunting. 31 He had also made some delicious food and brought it to his father. He said to his father, “Let my father get up and eat some of his son’s game, so that you may bless me.”

32 But his father Isaac said to him, “Who are you?”

He answered, “I am Esau your firstborn son.”

33 Isaac began to tremble uncontrollably. “Who was it then,” he said, “who hunted game and brought it to me? I ate it all before you came in, and I blessed him. Indeed, he will be blessed!”

34 When Esau heard his father’s words, he cried out with a loud and bitter cry and said to his father, “Bless me too, my father!” (AI)

35 But he replied, “Your brother came deceitfully and took your blessing.”

36 So he said, “Isn’t he rightly named Jacob?[n](AJ) For he has cheated me twice now. He took my birthright, and look, now he has taken my blessing.” Then he asked, “Haven’t you saved a blessing for me?”

37 But Isaac answered Esau, “Look, I have made him a master over you, have given him all of his relatives as his servants, and have sustained him with grain and new wine. What then can I do for you, my son?”

38 Esau said to his father, “Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me too, my father!” And Esau wept loudly.[o]

39 His father Isaac answered him,

Look, your dwelling place will be
away from the richness of the land,
away from the dew of the sky above.
40 You will live by your sword,
and you will serve your brother.
But when you rebel,[p]
you will break his yoke from your neck.

Esau’s Anger

41 Esau held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him. And Esau determined in his heart, “The days of mourning for my father are approaching; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”

42 When the words of her older son Esau were reported to Rebekah, she summoned her younger son Jacob and said to him, “Listen, your brother Esau is consoling himself by planning to kill you. 43 So now, my son, listen to me. Flee at once to my brother Laban in Haran, 44 and stay with him for a few days until your brother’s anger subsides— 45 until your brother’s rage turns away from you and he forgets what you have done to him. Then I will send for you and bring you back from there. Why should I lose you both in one day?”

46 So Rebekah said to Isaac, “I’m sick of my life because of these Hethite girls.(AK) If Jacob marries someone from around here,[q] like these Hethite girls, what good is my life?” (AL)

Jacob’s Departure

28 So Isaac summoned Jacob, blessed him, and commanded him, “Do not marry a Canaanite girl. Go at once to Paddan-aram, to the house of Bethuel, your mother’s father. Marry one of the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother. May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you(AM) so that you become an assembly of peoples.(AN) May God give you and your offspring the blessing of Abraham(AO) so that you may possess the land where you live as a foreigner, the land God gave to Abraham.”(AP) So Isaac sent Jacob to Paddan-aram, to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, the mother of Jacob and Esau.

Esau noticed that Isaac blessed Jacob and sent him to Paddan-aram to get a wife there. When he blessed him, Isaac commanded Jacob, “Do not marry a Canaanite girl.” And Jacob listened to his father and mother and went to Paddan-aram. Esau realized that his father Isaac disapproved of the Canaanite women,(AQ) so Esau went to Ishmael and married, in addition to his other wives, Mahalath daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son. She was the sister of Nebaioth.

Jacob at Bethel

10 Jacob left Beer-sheba and went toward Haran. 11 He reached a certain place and spent the night there because the sun had set. He took one of the stones from the place, put it there at his head, and lay down in that place. 12 And he dreamed:(AR) A stairway was set on the ground with its top reaching the sky, and God’s angels were going up and down on it.(AS) 13 The Lord was standing there beside him,[r] saying, “I am the Lord,(AT) the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your offspring the land on which you are lying. 14 Your offspring will be like the dust of the earth,(AU) and you will spread out toward the west, the east, the north, and the south. All the peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.(AV) 15 Look, I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go. I will bring you back to this land,(AW) for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.”(AX) 17 He was afraid and said, “What an awesome place this is! This is none other than the house of God. This is the gate of heaven.”

18 Early in the morning Jacob took the stone that was near his head and set it up as a marker. He poured oil on top of it 19 and named the place Bethel,[s] though previously the city was named Luz.(AY) 20 Then Jacob made a vow:(AZ) “If God will be with me and watch over me during this journey I’m making, if he provides me with food to eat and clothing to wear, 21 and if I return safely to my father’s family,(BA) then the Lord will be my God.(BB) 22 This stone that I have set up as a marker will be God’s house, and I will give to you a tenth of all that you give me.”(BC)

Jacob Meets Rachel

29 Jacob resumed his journey[t] and went to the eastern country.[u](BD) He looked and saw a well in a field. Three flocks of sheep were lying there beside it because the sheep were watered from this well. But a large stone covered the opening of the well. The shepherds would roll the stone from the opening of the well and water the sheep when all the flocks[v] were gathered there. Then they would return the stone to its place over the well’s opening.

Jacob asked the men at the well, “My brothers! Where are you from?”

“We’re from Haran,” they answered.

“Do you know Laban, Nahor’s grandson?” Jacob asked them.

They answered, “We know him.”

“Is he well?” Jacob asked.

“Yes,” they said, “and here is his daughter Rachel, coming with his sheep.”

Then Jacob said, “Look, it is still broad daylight. It’s not time for the animals to be gathered. Water the flock, then go out and let them graze.”

But they replied, “We can’t until all the flocks have been gathered and the stone is rolled from the well’s opening. Then we will water the sheep.”

While he was still speaking with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep, for she was a shepherdess. 10 As soon as Jacob saw his uncle Laban’s daughter Rachel with his sheep,[w] he went up and rolled the stone from the opening and watered his uncle Laban’s sheep. 11 Then Jacob kissed Rachel and wept loudly.[x] 12 He told Rachel that he was her father’s relative, Rebekah’s son. She ran and told her father.

Jacob Deceived

13 When Laban heard the news about his sister’s son Jacob, he ran to meet him, hugged him, and kissed him. Then he took him to his house, and Jacob told him all that had happened.

14 Laban said to him, “Yes, you are my own flesh and blood.”[y](BE)

After Jacob had stayed with him a month, 15 Laban said to him, “Just because you’re my relative, should you work for me for nothing? Tell me what your wages should be.”

16 Now Laban had two daughters: the older was named Leah, and the younger was named Rachel. 17 Leah had tender eyes, but Rachel was shapely and beautiful. 18 Jacob loved Rachel, so he answered Laban, “I’ll work for you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel.”(BF)

19 Laban replied, “Better that I give her to you than to some other man. Stay with me.” 20 So Jacob worked seven years for Rachel, and they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.

21 Then Jacob said to Laban, “Since my time is complete, give me my wife, so I can sleep with[z] her.” 22 So Laban invited all the men of the place and sponsored a feast. 23 That evening, Laban took his daughter Leah and gave her to Jacob, and he slept with her. 24 And Laban gave his slave Zilpah to his daughter Leah as her slave.

25 When morning came, there was Leah! So he said to Laban, “What have you done to me? Wasn’t it for Rachel that I worked for you? Why have you deceived me?”

26 Laban answered, “It is not the custom in our country to give the younger daughter in marriage before the firstborn. 27 Complete this week of wedding celebration, and we will also give you this younger one in return for working yet another seven years for me.”

28 And Jacob did just that. He finished the week of celebration, and Laban gave him his daughter Rachel as his wife. 29 And Laban gave his slave Bilhah to his daughter Rachel as her slave. 30 Jacob slept with Rachel also, and indeed, he loved Rachel more than Leah. And he worked for Laban another seven years.(BG)

Jacob’s Sons

31 When the Lord saw that Leah was neglected,(BH) he opened her womb;(BI) but Rachel was unable to conceive.(BJ) 32 Leah conceived, gave birth to a son, and named him Reuben,[aa] for she said, “The Lord has seen my affliction;(BK) surely my husband will love me now.”

33 She conceived again, gave birth to a son, and said, “The Lord heard that I am neglected and has given me this son also.” So she named him Simeon.[ab]

34 She conceived again, gave birth to a son, and said, “At last, my husband will become attached to me because I have borne three sons for him.” Therefore he was named Levi.[ac]

35 And she conceived again, gave birth to a son, and said, “This time I will praise the Lord.” Therefore she named him Judah.[ad](BL) Then Leah stopped having children.

30 When Rachel saw that she was not bearing Jacob any children, she envied her sister. “Give me sons, or I will die!” (BM) she said to Jacob.

Jacob became angry with Rachel and said, “Am I in the place of God? He has withheld offspring[ae] from you!”

Then she said, “Here is my maid Bilhah. Go sleep with her, and she’ll bear children for me[af](BN) so that through her I too can build a family.” So Rachel gave her slave Bilhah to Jacob as a wife, and he slept with her. Bilhah conceived and bore Jacob a son. Rachel said, “God has vindicated me; yes, he has heard me and given me a son,” so she named him Dan.[ag]

Rachel’s slave Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son. Rachel said, “In my wrestlings with God,[ah] I have wrestled with my sister and won,” and she named him Naphtali.[ai]

When Leah saw that she had stopped having children, she took her slave Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as a wife. 10 Leah’s slave Zilpah bore Jacob a son. 11 Then Leah said, “What good fortune!” [aj] and she named him Gad.[ak]

12 When Leah’s slave Zilpah bore Jacob a second son, 13 Leah said, “I am happy that the women call me happy,”(BO) so she named him Asher.[al]

14 Reuben went out during the wheat harvest and found some mandrakes in the field.(BP) When he brought them to his mother Leah, Rachel asked, “Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”

15 But Leah replied to her, “Isn’t it enough that you have taken my husband? Now you also want to take my son’s mandrakes?”

“Well then,” Rachel said, “he can sleep with you tonight in exchange for your son’s mandrakes.”

16 When Jacob came in from the field that evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, “You must come with me, for I have hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” So Jacob slept with her that night.

17 God listened to Leah, and she conceived and bore Jacob a fifth son. 18 Leah said, “God has rewarded me for giving my slave to my husband,” and she named him Issachar.[am]

19 Then Leah conceived again and bore Jacob a sixth son. 20 “God has given me a good gift,” Leah said. “This time my husband will honor me because I have borne six sons for him,” and she named him Zebulun.[an] 21 Later, Leah bore a daughter and named her Dinah.

22 Then God remembered Rachel. He listened to her and opened her womb.(BQ) 23 She conceived and bore a son, and she said, “God has taken away my disgrace.”(BR) 24 She named him Joseph[ao] and said, “May the Lord add another son to me.”(BS)

Jacob’s Flocks Multiply

25 After Rachel gave birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, “Send me on my way so that I can return to my homeland. 26 Give me my wives and my children that I have worked for, and let me go.(BT) You know how hard I have worked for you.”

27 But Laban said to him, “If I have found favor with you, stay. I have learned by divination that the Lord has blessed me because of you.” 28 Then Laban said, “Name your wages, and I will pay them.”(BU)

29 So Jacob said to him, “You know how I have served you and how your herds have fared with me.(BV) 30 For you had very little before I came, but now your wealth has increased. The Lord has blessed you because of me. And now, when will I also do something for my own family?”

31 Laban asked, “What should I give you?”

And Jacob said, “You don’t need to give me anything. If you do this one thing for me, I will continue to shepherd and keep your flock. 32 Let me go through all your sheep today and remove every sheep that is speckled or spotted, every dark-colored sheep among the lambs, and the spotted and speckled among the female goats. Such will be my wages. 33 In the future when you come to check on my wages, my honesty will testify for me. If I have any female goats that are not speckled or spotted, or any lambs that are not black, they will be considered stolen.”

34 “Good,” said Laban. “Let it be as you have said.”

35 That day Laban removed the streaked and spotted male goats and all the speckled and spotted female goats—every one that had any white on it—and every dark-colored one among the lambs, and he placed his sons in charge of them. 36 He put a three-day journey between himself and Jacob. Jacob, meanwhile, was shepherding the rest of Laban’s flock.

37 Jacob then took branches of fresh poplar, almond, and plane wood, and peeled the bark, exposing white stripes on the branches. 38 He set the peeled branches in the troughs in front of the sheep—in the water channels where the sheep came to drink. And the sheep bred when they came to drink. 39 The flocks bred in front of the branches and bore streaked, speckled, and spotted young.(BW) 40 Jacob separated the lambs and made the flocks face the streaked sheep and the completely dark sheep in Laban’s flocks. Then he set his own stock apart and didn’t put them with Laban’s sheep.

41 Whenever the stronger of the flock were breeding, Jacob placed the branches in the troughs, in full view of the flocks, and they would breed in front of the branches. 42 As for the weaklings of the flocks, he did not put out the branches. So it turned out that the weak sheep belonged to Laban and the stronger ones to Jacob. 43 And the man became very rich.[ap] He had many flocks, female and male slaves, and camels and donkeys.(BX)

Isaac and Abimelek(A)

26 Now there was a famine in the land(B)—besides the previous famine in Abraham’s time—and Isaac went to Abimelek king of the Philistines(C) in Gerar.(D) The Lord appeared(E) to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt;(F) live in the land where I tell you to live.(G) Stay in this land for a while,(H) and I will be with you(I) and will bless you.(J) For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands(K) and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham.(L) I will make your descendants(M) as numerous as the stars in the sky(N) and will give them all these lands,(O) and through your offspring[a] all nations on earth will be blessed,[b](P) because Abraham obeyed me(Q) and did everything I required of him, keeping my commands, my decrees(R) and my instructions.(S) So Isaac stayed in Gerar.(T)

When the men of that place asked him about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,(U)” because he was afraid to say, “She is my wife.” He thought, “The men of this place might kill me on account of Rebekah, because she is beautiful.”

When Isaac had been there a long time, Abimelek king of the Philistines(V) looked down from a window and saw Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah. So Abimelek summoned Isaac and said, “She is really your wife! Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’?(W)

Isaac answered him, “Because I thought I might lose my life on account of her.”

10 Then Abimelek said, “What is this you have done to us?(X) One of the men might well have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.”

11 So Abimelek gave orders to all the people: “Anyone who harms(Y) this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”(Z)

12 Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold,(AA) because the Lord blessed him.(AB) 13 The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy.(AC) 14 He had so many flocks and herds and servants(AD) that the Philistines envied him.(AE) 15 So all the wells(AF) that his father’s servants had dug in the time of his father Abraham, the Philistines stopped up,(AG) filling them with earth.

16 Then Abimelek said to Isaac, “Move away from us;(AH) you have become too powerful for us.(AI)

17 So Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar,(AJ) where he settled. 18 Isaac reopened the wells(AK) that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them.

19 Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there. 20 But the herders of Gerar quarreled(AL) with those of Isaac and said, “The water is ours!”(AM) So he named the well Esek,[c] because they disputed with him. 21 Then they dug another well, but they quarreled(AN) over that one also; so he named it Sitnah.[d] 22 He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth,[e](AO) saying, “Now the Lord has given us room(AP) and we will flourish(AQ) in the land.”

23 From there he went up to Beersheba.(AR) 24 That night the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham.(AS) Do not be afraid,(AT) for I am with you;(AU) I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants(AV) for the sake of my servant Abraham.”(AW)

25 Isaac built an altar(AX) there and called on the name of the Lord.(AY) There he pitched his tent, and there his servants dug a well.(AZ)

26 Meanwhile, Abimelek had come to him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his personal adviser and Phicol the commander of his forces.(BA) 27 Isaac asked them, “Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?(BB)

28 They answered, “We saw clearly that the Lord was with you;(BC) so we said, ‘There ought to be a sworn agreement between us’—between us and you. Let us make a treaty(BD) with you 29 that you will do us no harm,(BE) just as we did not harm you but always treated you well and sent you away peacefully. And now you are blessed by the Lord.”(BF)

30 Isaac then made a feast(BG) for them, and they ate and drank. 31 Early the next morning the men swore an oath(BH) to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they went away peacefully.

32 That day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well(BI) they had dug. They said, “We’ve found water!” 33 He called it Shibah,[f] and to this day the name of the town has been Beersheba.[g](BJ)

Jacob Takes Esau’s Blessing

34 When Esau was forty years old,(BK) he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and also Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite.(BL) 35 They were a source of grief to Isaac and Rebekah.(BM)

27 When Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he could no longer see,(BN) he called for Esau his older son(BO) and said to him, “My son.”

“Here I am,” he answered.

Isaac said, “I am now an old man and don’t know the day of my death.(BP) Now then, get your equipment—your quiver and bow—and go out to the open country(BQ) to hunt some wild game for me. Prepare me the kind of tasty food I like(BR) and bring it to me to eat, so that I may give you my blessing(BS) before I die.”(BT)

Now Rebekah was listening as Isaac spoke to his son Esau. When Esau left for the open country(BU) to hunt game and bring it back, Rebekah said to her son Jacob,(BV) “Look, I overheard your father say to your brother Esau, ‘Bring me some game and prepare me some tasty food to eat, so that I may give you my blessing in the presence of the Lord before I die.’(BW) Now, my son, listen carefully and do what I tell you:(BX) Go out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats,(BY) so I can prepare some tasty food for your father, just the way he likes it.(BZ) 10 Then take it to your father to eat, so that he may give you his blessing(CA) before he dies.”

11 Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “But my brother Esau is a hairy man(CB) while I have smooth skin. 12 What if my father touches me?(CC) I would appear to be tricking him and would bring down a curse(CD) on myself rather than a blessing.”

13 His mother said to him, “My son, let the curse fall on me.(CE) Just do what I say;(CF) go and get them for me.”

14 So he went and got them and brought them to his mother, and she prepared some tasty food, just the way his father liked it.(CG) 15 Then Rebekah took the best clothes(CH) of Esau her older son,(CI) which she had in the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob. 16 She also covered his hands and the smooth part of his neck with the goatskins.(CJ) 17 Then she handed to her son Jacob the tasty food and the bread she had made.

18 He went to his father and said, “My father.”

“Yes, my son,” he answered. “Who is it?”(CK)

19 Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn.(CL) I have done as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game,(CM) so that you may give me your blessing.”(CN)

20 Isaac asked his son, “How did you find it so quickly, my son?”

“The Lord your God gave me success,(CO)” he replied.

21 Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Come near so I can touch you,(CP) my son, to know whether you really are my son Esau or not.”

22 Jacob went close to his father Isaac,(CQ) who touched(CR) him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” 23 He did not recognize him, for his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau;(CS) so he proceeded to bless him. 24 “Are you really my son Esau?” he asked.

“I am,” he replied.

25 Then he said, “My son, bring me some of your game to eat, so that I may give you my blessing.”(CT)

Jacob brought it to him and he ate; and he brought some wine and he drank. 26 Then his father Isaac said to him, “Come here, my son, and kiss me.”

27 So he went to him and kissed(CU) him(CV). When Isaac caught the smell of his clothes,(CW) he blessed him and said,

“Ah, the smell of my son
is like the smell of a field
    that the Lord has blessed.(CX)
28 May God give you heaven’s dew(CY)
    and earth’s richness(CZ)
an abundance of grain(DA) and new wine.(DB)
29 May nations serve you
and peoples bow down to you.(DC)
Be lord over your brothers,
and may the sons of your mother bow down to you.(DD)
May those who curse you be cursed
and those who bless you be blessed.(DE)

30 After Isaac finished blessing him, and Jacob had scarcely left his father’s presence, his brother Esau came in from hunting. 31 He too prepared some tasty food and brought it to his father. Then he said to him, “My father, please sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may give me your blessing.”(DF)

32 His father Isaac asked him, “Who are you?”(DG)

“I am your son,” he answered, “your firstborn, Esau.(DH)

33 Isaac trembled violently and said, “Who was it, then, that hunted game and brought it to me?(DI) I ate it just before you came and I blessed him—and indeed he will be blessed!(DJ)

34 When Esau heard his father’s words, he burst out with a loud and bitter cry(DK) and said to his father, “Bless(DL) me—me too, my father!”

35 But he said, “Your brother came deceitfully(DM) and took your blessing.”(DN)

36 Esau said, “Isn’t he rightly named Jacob[h]?(DO) This is the second time he has taken advantage of(DP) me: He took my birthright,(DQ) and now he’s taken my blessing!”(DR) Then he asked, “Haven’t you reserved any blessing for me?”

37 Isaac answered Esau, “I have made him lord over you and have made all his relatives his servants, and I have sustained him with grain and new wine.(DS) So what can I possibly do for you, my son?”

38 Esau said to his father, “Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me too, my father!” Then Esau wept aloud.(DT)

39 His father Isaac answered him,(DU)

“Your dwelling will be
    away from the earth’s richness,
away from the dew(DV) of heaven above.(DW)
40 You will live by the sword
and you will serve(DX) your brother.(DY)
But when you grow restless,
    you will throw his yoke
    from off your neck.(DZ)

41 Esau held a grudge(EA) against Jacob(EB) because of the blessing his father had given him. He said to himself, “The days of mourning(EC) for my father are near; then I will kill(ED) my brother Jacob.”(EE)

42 When Rebekah was told what her older son Esau(EF) had said, she sent for her younger son Jacob and said to him, “Your brother Esau is planning to avenge himself by killing you.(EG) 43 Now then, my son, do what I say:(EH) Flee at once to my brother Laban(EI) in Harran.(EJ) 44 Stay with him for a while(EK) until your brother’s fury subsides. 45 When your brother is no longer angry with you and forgets what you did to him,(EL) I’ll send word for you to come back from there.(EM) Why should I lose both of you in one day?”

46 Then Rebekah said to Isaac, “I’m disgusted with living because of these Hittite(EN) women. If Jacob takes a wife from among the women of this land,(EO) from Hittite women like these, my life will not be worth living.”(EP)

28 So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed(EQ) him. Then he commanded him: “Do not marry a Canaanite woman.(ER) Go at once to Paddan Aram,[i](ES) to the house of your mother’s father Bethuel.(ET) Take a wife for yourself there, from among the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother.(EU) May God Almighty[j](EV) bless(EW) you and make you fruitful(EX) and increase your numbers(EY) until you become a community of peoples. May he give you and your descendants the blessing given to Abraham,(EZ) so that you may take possession of the land(FA) where you now reside as a foreigner,(FB) the land God gave to Abraham.” Then Isaac sent Jacob on his way,(FC) and he went to Paddan Aram,(FD) to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean,(FE) the brother of Rebekah,(FF) who was the mother of Jacob and Esau.

Now Esau learned that Isaac had blessed Jacob and had sent him to Paddan Aram to take a wife from there, and that when he blessed him he commanded him, “Do not marry a Canaanite woman,”(FG) and that Jacob had obeyed his father and mother and had gone to Paddan Aram. Esau then realized how displeasing the Canaanite women(FH) were to his father Isaac;(FI) so he went to Ishmael(FJ) and married Mahalath, the sister of Nebaioth(FK) and daughter of Ishmael son of Abraham, in addition to the wives he already had.(FL)

Jacob’s Dream at Bethel

10 Jacob left Beersheba(FM) and set out for Harran.(FN) 11 When he reached a certain place,(FO) he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head(FP) and lay down to sleep. 12 He had a dream(FQ) in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.(FR) 13 There above it[k] stood the Lord,(FS) and he said: “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac.(FT) I will give you and your descendants the land(FU) on which you are lying.(FV) 14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you(FW) will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south.(FX) All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.[l](FY) 15 I am with you(FZ) and will watch over you(GA) wherever you go,(GB) and I will bring you back to this land.(GC) I will not leave you(GD) until I have done what I have promised you.(GE)(GF)

16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep,(GG) he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” 17 He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place!(GH) This is none other than the house of God;(GI) this is the gate of heaven.”

18 Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head(GJ) and set it up as a pillar(GK) and poured oil on top of it.(GL) 19 He called that place Bethel,[m](GM) though the city used to be called Luz.(GN)

20 Then Jacob made a vow,(GO) saying, “If God will be with me and will watch over me(GP) on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear(GQ) 21 so that I return safely(GR) to my father’s household,(GS) then the Lord[n] will be my God(GT) 22 and[o] this stone that I have set up as a pillar(GU) will be God’s house,(GV) and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.(GW)

Jacob Arrives in Paddan Aram

29 Then Jacob continued on his journey and came to the land of the eastern peoples.(GX) There he saw a well in the open country, with three flocks of sheep lying near it because the flocks were watered from that well.(GY) The stone(GZ) over the mouth of the well was large. When all the flocks were gathered there, the shepherds would roll the stone(HA) away from the well’s mouth and water the sheep.(HB) Then they would return the stone to its place over the mouth of the well.

Jacob asked the shepherds, “My brothers, where are you from?”(HC)

“We’re from Harran,(HD)” they replied.

He said to them, “Do you know Laban, Nahor’s grandson?”(HE)

“Yes, we know him,” they answered.

Then Jacob asked them, “Is he well?”

“Yes, he is,” they said, “and here comes his daughter Rachel(HF) with the sheep.(HG)

“Look,” he said, “the sun is still high; it is not time for the flocks to be gathered. Water the sheep and take them back to pasture.”

“We can’t,” they replied, “until all the flocks are gathered and the stone(HH) has been rolled away from the mouth of the well. Then we will water(HI) the sheep.”

While he was still talking with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep,(HJ) for she was a shepherd. 10 When Jacob saw Rachel(HK) daughter of his uncle Laban, and Laban’s sheep, he went over and rolled the stone(HL) away from the mouth of the well and watered(HM) his uncle’s sheep.(HN) 11 Then Jacob kissed(HO) Rachel and began to weep aloud.(HP) 12 He had told Rachel that he was a relative(HQ) of her father and a son of Rebekah.(HR) So she ran and told her father.(HS)

13 As soon as Laban(HT) heard the news about Jacob, his sister’s son, he hurried to meet him. He embraced him(HU) and kissed him and brought him to his home, and there Jacob told him all these things. 14 Then Laban said to him, “You are my own flesh and blood.”(HV)

Jacob Marries Leah and Rachel

After Jacob had stayed with him for a whole month, 15 Laban said to him, “Just because you are a relative(HW) of mine, should you work for me for nothing? Tell me what your wages(HX) should be.”

16 Now Laban had two daughters; the name of the older was Leah,(HY) and the name of the younger was Rachel.(HZ) 17 Leah had weak[p] eyes, but Rachel(IA) had a lovely figure and was beautiful.(IB) 18 Jacob was in love with Rachel(IC) and said, “I’ll work for you seven years in return for your younger daughter Rachel.”(ID)

19 Laban said, “It’s better that I give her to you than to some other man. Stay here with me.” 20 So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel,(IE) but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.(IF)

21 Then Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife. My time is completed, and I want to make love to her.(IG)

22 So Laban brought together all the people of the place and gave a feast.(IH) 23 But when evening came, he took his daughter Leah(II) and brought her to Jacob, and Jacob made love to her. 24 And Laban gave his servant Zilpah(IJ) to his daughter as her attendant.(IK)

25 When morning came, there was Leah! So Jacob said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me?(IL) I served you for Rachel, didn’t I? Why have you deceived me?(IM)

26 Laban replied, “It is not our custom here to give the younger daughter in marriage before the older one.(IN) 27 Finish this daughter’s bridal week;(IO) then we will give you the younger one also, in return for another seven years of work.(IP)

28 And Jacob did so. He finished the week with Leah, and then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel to be his wife.(IQ) 29 Laban gave his servant Bilhah(IR) to his daughter Rachel as her attendant.(IS) 30 Jacob made love to Rachel also, and his love for Rachel was greater than his love for Leah.(IT) And he worked for Laban another seven years.(IU)

Jacob’s Children

31 When the Lord saw that Leah was not loved,(IV) he enabled her to conceive,(IW) but Rachel remained childless. 32 Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son.(IX) She named him Reuben,[q](IY) for she said, “It is because the Lord has seen my misery.(IZ) Surely my husband will love me now.”

33 She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “Because the Lord heard that I am not loved,(JA) he gave me this one too.” So she named him Simeon.[r](JB)

34 Again she conceived, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “Now at last my husband will become attached to me,(JC) because I have borne him three sons.” So he was named Levi.[s](JD)

35 She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “This time I will praise the Lord.” So she named him Judah.[t](JE) Then she stopped having children.(JF)

30 When Rachel saw that she was not bearing Jacob any children,(JG) she became jealous of her sister.(JH) So she said to Jacob, “Give me children, or I’ll die!”

Jacob became angry with her and said, “Am I in the place of God,(JI) who has kept you from having children?”(JJ)

Then she said, “Here is Bilhah,(JK) my servant.(JL) Sleep with her so that she can bear children for me and I too can build a family through her.”(JM)

So she gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife.(JN) Jacob slept with her,(JO) and she became pregnant and bore him a son. Then Rachel said, “God has vindicated me;(JP) he has listened to my plea and given me a son.”(JQ) Because of this she named him Dan.[u](JR)

Rachel’s servant Bilhah(JS) conceived again and bore Jacob a second son. Then Rachel said, “I have had a great struggle with my sister, and I have won.”(JT) So she named him Naphtali.[v](JU)

When Leah(JV) saw that she had stopped having children,(JW) she took her servant Zilpah(JX) and gave her to Jacob as a wife.(JY) 10 Leah’s servant Zilpah(JZ) bore Jacob a son. 11 Then Leah said, “What good fortune!”[w] So she named him Gad.[x](KA)

12 Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son. 13 Then Leah said, “How happy I am! The women will call me(KB) happy.”(KC) So she named him Asher.[y](KD)

14 During wheat harvest,(KE) Reuben went out into the fields and found some mandrake plants,(KF) which he brought to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, “Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”

15 But she said to her, “Wasn’t it enough(KG) that you took away my husband? Will you take my son’s mandrakes too?”

“Very well,” Rachel said, “he can sleep with you tonight in return for your son’s mandrakes.”(KH)

16 So when Jacob came in from the fields that evening, Leah went out to meet him. “You must sleep with me,” she said. “I have hired you with my son’s mandrakes.”(KI) So he slept with her that night.

17 God listened to Leah,(KJ) and she became pregnant and bore Jacob a fifth son. 18 Then Leah said, “God has rewarded me for giving my servant to my husband.”(KK) So she named him Issachar.[z](KL)

19 Leah conceived again and bore Jacob a sixth son. 20 Then Leah said, “God has presented me with a precious gift. This time my husband will treat me with honor,(KM) because I have borne him six sons.” So she named him Zebulun.[aa](KN)

21 Some time later she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.(KO)

22 Then God remembered Rachel;(KP) he listened to her(KQ) and enabled her to conceive.(KR) 23 She became pregnant and gave birth to a son(KS) and said, “God has taken away my disgrace.”(KT) 24 She named him Joseph,[ab](KU) and said, “May the Lord add to me another son.”(KV)

Jacob’s Flocks Increase

25 After Rachel gave birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, “Send me on my way(KW) so I can go back to my own homeland.(KX) 26 Give me my wives and children, for whom I have served you,(KY) and I will be on my way. You know how much work I’ve done for you.”

27 But Laban said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes,(KZ) please stay. I have learned by divination(LA) that the Lord has blessed me because of you.”(LB) 28 He added, “Name your wages,(LC) and I will pay them.”

29 Jacob said to him, “You know how I have worked for you(LD) and how your livestock has fared under my care.(LE) 30 The little you had before I came has increased greatly, and the Lord has blessed you wherever I have been.(LF) But now, when may I do something for my own household?(LG)

31 “What shall I give you?” he asked.

“Don’t give me anything,” Jacob replied. “But if you will do this one thing for me, I will go on tending your flocks and watching over them: 32 Let me go through all your flocks today and remove from them every speckled or spotted sheep, every dark-colored lamb and every spotted or speckled goat.(LH) They will be my wages.(LI) 33 And my honesty will testify for me in the future, whenever you check on the wages you have paid me. Any goat in my possession that is not speckled or spotted, or any lamb that is not dark-colored,(LJ) will be considered stolen.(LK)

34 “Agreed,” said Laban. “Let it be as you have said.” 35 That same day he removed all the male goats that were streaked or spotted, and all the speckled or spotted female goats (all that had white on them) and all the dark-colored lambs,(LL) and he placed them in the care of his sons.(LM) 36 Then he put a three-day journey(LN) between himself and Jacob, while Jacob continued to tend the rest of Laban’s flocks.

37 Jacob, however, took fresh-cut branches from poplar, almond(LO) and plane trees(LP) and made white stripes on them by peeling the bark and exposing the white inner wood of the branches.(LQ) 38 Then he placed the peeled branches(LR) in all the watering troughs,(LS) so that they would be directly in front of the flocks when they came to drink. When the flocks were in heat(LT) and came to drink, 39 they mated in front of the branches.(LU) And they bore young that were streaked or speckled or spotted.(LV) 40 Jacob set apart the young of the flock by themselves, but made the rest face the streaked and dark-colored animals(LW) that belonged to Laban. Thus he made separate flocks for himself and did not put them with Laban’s animals. 41 Whenever the stronger females were in heat,(LX) Jacob would place the branches in the troughs in front of the animals so they would mate near the branches,(LY) 42 but if the animals were weak, he would not place them there. So the weak animals went to Laban and the strong ones to Jacob.(LZ) 43 In this way the man grew exceedingly prosperous and came to own large flocks, and female and male servants, and camels and donkeys.(MA)
