23 Then he went up from there to (A)Beersheba. 24 The Lord (B)appeared to him the same night and said,

(C)I am the God of your father Abraham;
(D)Do not fear, for I am with you.
I (E)will bless you, and multiply your [a]descendants,
For the sake of My servant Abraham.”

25 So he built an (F)altar there and called upon the name of the Lord, and pitched his tent there; and there Isaac’s servants dug a well.

Covenant with Abimelech

26 Then (G)Abimelech came to him from Gerar [b]with his adviser Ahuzzath and Phicol the commander of his army. 27 Isaac said to them, “(H)Why have you come to me, since you hate me and have sent me away from you?” 28 They said, “We see plainly (I)that the Lord has been with you; so we said, ‘Let there now be an oath between us, even between [c]you and us, and let us make a covenant with you, 29 that you will do us no harm, just as we have not touched you [d]and have done to you nothing but good and have sent you away in peace. You are now the (J)blessed of the Lord.’” 30 Then (K)he made them a feast, and they ate and drank. 31 In the morning they arose early and [e](L)exchanged oaths; then Isaac sent them away and they departed from him in peace. 32 Now it came about on the same day, that Isaac’s servants came in and told him about the well which they had dug, and said to him, “We have found water.” 33 So he called it Shibah; therefore the name of the city is (M)Beersheba to this day.

34 When Esau was forty years old (N)he [f]married Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite;

28 They answered, “We saw clearly that the Lord was with you;(L) so we said, ‘There ought to be a sworn agreement between us’—between us and you. Let us make a treaty(M) with you 29 that you will do us no harm,(N) just as we did not harm you but always treated you well and sent you away peacefully. And now you are blessed by the Lord.”(O)

30 Isaac then made a feast(P) for them, and they ate and drank. 31 Early the next morning the men swore an oath(Q) to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they went away peacefully.

32 That day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well(R) they had dug. They said, “We’ve found water!” 33 He called it Shibah,[a] and to this day the name of the town has been Beersheba.[b](S)
