Esau Sells His Birthright

And the boys grew up; Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the field, but Jacob was a [a]peaceful man, [b](A)living in tents. 28 Isaac loved Esau because [c]he had (B)an appetite for hunted game, (C)but Rebekah loved Jacob.

And Jacob had cooked (D)stew. And Esau came in from the field, and he was [d]famished. 30 Then Esau said to Jacob, “Please give me a swallow from the red stuff—[e]this red stuff, for I am [f]famished.” Therefore his name was called [g]Edom. 31 But Jacob said, “[h]First sell me your (E)birthright.” 32 And Esau said, “Behold, I am about to die; so of what use then is the birthright to me?” 33 And Jacob said, “[i]First swear to me”; so he swore to him and (F)sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 So Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; and he ate and drank and rose and went away. Thus Esau despised his birthright.

Once when Jacob was cooking some stew,(E) Esau came in from the open country,(F) famished. 30 He said to Jacob, “Quick, let me have some of that red stew!(G) I’m famished!” (That is why he was also called Edom.[a])(H)

Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.(I)

“Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?”

But Jacob said, “Swear(J) to me first.” So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright(K) to Jacob.

Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew.(L) He ate and drank, and then got up and left.
