Sarah Turns against Hagar

⁹Now [as time went on] Sarah saw [Ishmael] the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, ^[a]mocking [Isaac].^(A) ¹⁰Therefore she said to Abraham, “Drive out this maid and her son, for the son of this maid shall not be an heir with my son Isaac.”^(B) ¹¹The situation ^[b]distressed Abraham greatly because of his son [Ishmael]. ¹²God said to Abraham, “Do not let it distress you because of Ishmael and your maid; whatever Sarah tells you, listen to her and do what she asks, for your descendants will be named through Isaac.^(C)

New International Version

⁹But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham^(A) was mocking,^(B) ¹⁰and she said to Abraham, “Get rid of that slave woman^(C) and her son, for that woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac.”^(D)

¹¹The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son.^(E) ¹²But God said to him, “Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring^[a] will be reckoned.^(F)
