24 Then the Lord (A)rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven, 25 and (B)He overthrew those cities, and all the [a]valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. 26 But his wife, from behind him, (C)looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

27 Now Abraham arose early in the morning and went to (D)the place where he had stood before the Lord; 28 and he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the [b]valley, and he saw, and behold, (E)the smoke of the land ascended like the smoke of a [c]furnace.

29 Thus it came about, when God destroyed the cities of the [d]valley, that (F)God remembered Abraham, and (G)sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when He overthrew the cities in which Lot lived.

Lot Is Debased

30 Lot went up from Zoar, and [e](H)stayed in the [f]mountains, and his two daughters with him; for he was afraid to [g]stay in Zoar; and he [h]stayed in a cave, he and his two daughters. 31 Then the firstborn said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is not a man [i]on earth to (I)come in to us after the manner of the earth. 32 Come, (J)let us make our father drink wine, and let us lie with him that we may preserve [j]our family through our father.” 33 So they made their father drink wine that night, and the firstborn went in and lay with her father; and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose. 34 On the following day, the firstborn said to the younger, “Behold, I lay last night with my father; let us make him drink wine tonight also; then you go in and lie with him, that we may preserve [k]our family through our father.” 35 So they made their father drink wine that night also, and the younger arose and lay with him; and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose. 36 Thus both the daughters of Lot were with child by their father. 37 The firstborn bore a son, and called his name (K)Moab; he is the father of the Moabites to this day. 38 As for the younger, she also bore a son, and called his name Ben-ammi; he is the father of the [l]sons of (L)Ammon to this day.

24 Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur(A) on Sodom and Gomorrah(B)—from the Lord out of the heavens.(C) 25 Thus he overthrew those cities(D) and the entire plain,(E) destroying all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land.(F) 26 But Lot’s wife looked back,(G) and she became a pillar of salt.(H)

27 Early the next morning Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood before the Lord.(I) 28 He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, toward all the land of the plain, and he saw dense smoke rising from the land, like smoke from a furnace.(J)

29 So when God destroyed the cities of the plain,(K) he remembered(L) Abraham, and he brought Lot out of the catastrophe(M) that overthrew the cities where Lot had lived.(N)

Lot and His Daughters

30 Lot and his two daughters left Zoar(O) and settled in the mountains,(P) for he was afraid to stay in Zoar. He and his two daughters lived in a cave. 31 One day the older daughter said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man around here to give us children—as is the custom all over the earth. 32 Let’s get our father to drink wine and then sleep with him and preserve our family line(Q) through our father.”(R)

33 That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and slept with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.(S)

34 The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Last night I slept with my father. Let’s get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and sleep with him so we can preserve our family line through our father.”(T) 35 So they got their father to drink wine(U) that night also, and the younger daughter went in and slept with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.(V)

36 So both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father.(W) 37 The older daughter had a son, and she named him Moab[a];(X) he is the father of the Moabites(Y) of today. 38 The younger daughter also had a son, and she named him Ben-Ammi[b]; he is the father of the Ammonites[c](Z) of today.
