² So Sarai said to Abram, “Now behold, Yahweh has shut my womb from bearing children. ^(A)Please go in to my servant-woman; perhaps I will ^[a]obtain children through her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.

⁴ So he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. Then she saw that she had conceived, so her mistress became ^[a]contemptible in her sight.

⁸ Then Judah said to Onan, “^(A)Go in to your brother’s wife, and perform your duty as a brother-in-law to her, and raise up a seed for your brother.”

⁵ “If brothers live together and one of them dies and has no son, then the wife of the one who died shall not be married outside the family to a strange man. ^(A)Her husband’s brother shall go in to her and take her to himself as wife and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her.
