12 Now when the sun was going down, (A)a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, [a]terror and great darkness fell upon him. 13 Then God said to Abram, “Know for certain that (B)your [b]descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, [c]where (C)they will be enslaved and oppressed for (D)four hundred years. 14 But I will also judge the nation whom they will serve, and afterward they will come out (E)with [d]many possessions. 15 As for you, (F)you shall go to your fathers in peace; you will be buried at a good old age. 16 Then in (G)the fourth generation they will return here, for (H)the wrongdoing of the Amorite is not yet complete.”

17 Now it came about, when the sun had set, that it was very dark, and behold, a smoking oven and a flaming torch appeared which (I)passed between these pieces. 18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying,

(J)To your [e]descendants I have given this land,
From (K)the river of Egypt as far as the great river, the river Euphrates:

19 (L)the land of the Kenite, the Kenizzite, the Kadmonite, 20 the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Rephaim, 21 the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Girgashite, and the Jebusite.”

Warnings

(A)When the Lord your God brings you into the land where you are entering to take possession of it, and He drives away many nations from before you, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, (B)seven nations greater and mightier than you, and when the Lord your God turns them over to you and you [a]defeat them, (C)you shall [b]utterly destroy them. (D)You shall not make a covenant with them (E)nor be gracious to them. Furthermore, (F)you shall not intermarry with them: you shall not give your [c]daughters to [d]their sons, nor shall you take [e]their daughters for your [f]sons.
