God's Covenant with Abram

15 After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: (A)“Fear not, Abram, I am (B)your shield; your reward shall be very great.” But Abram said, “O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue[a] childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and (C)a member of my household will be my heir.” And behold, the word of the Lord came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; (D)your very own son[b] shall be your heir.” And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and (E)number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, (F)“So shall your offspring be.” And (G)he believed the Lord, and (H)he counted it to him as righteousness.

And he said to him, “I am the Lord who (I)brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans (J)to give you this land to possess.”

The Lord’s Covenant With Abram

15 After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram(A) in a vision:(B)

“Do not be afraid,(C) Abram.
    I am your shield,[a](D)
    your very great reward.[b](E)

But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord,(F) what can you give me since I remain childless(G) and the one who will inherit[c] my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?(H) And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant(I) in my household(J) will be my heir.”

Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.(K) He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars(L)—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring[d] be.”(M)

Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.(N)

He also said to him, “I am the Lord, who brought you out(O) of Ur of the Chaldeans(P) to give you this land to take possession of it.”(Q)

And God said to Abraham, “As for you, you shall keep my covenant, you and your offspring after you throughout their generations. 10 This is my covenant, which you shall keep, between me and you and your offspring after you: Every male among you shall be circumcised. 11 You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a (E)sign of the covenant between me and you. 12 He who is (F)eight days old among you shall be circumcised. Every male throughout your generations, whether born in your house or (G)bought with your money from any foreigner who is not of your offspring, 13 both he who is born in your house and he who is bought with your money, shall surely be circumcised. So shall my covenant be in your flesh an everlasting covenant. 14 Any uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin shall be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant.”

I will establish my covenant(A) as an everlasting covenant(B) between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God(C) and the God of your descendants after you.(D) The whole land of Canaan,(E) where you now reside as a foreigner,(F) I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you;(G) and I will be their God.(H)

Then God said to Abraham, “As for you, you must keep my covenant,(I) you and your descendants after you for the generations to come.(J) 10 This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised.(K) 11 You are to undergo circumcision,(L) and it will be the sign of the covenant(M) between me and you. 12 For the generations to come(N) every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised,(O) including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner—those who are not your offspring. 13 Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised.(P) My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant.(Q) 14 Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised(R) in the flesh, will be cut off from his people;(S) he has broken my covenant.(T)
