Kings of the Valley Take Lot

14 And it happened in the days of Amraphel king of (A)Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of (B)Elam, and Tidal king of [a]Goiim, that they made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of (C)Admah, and Shemeber king of (D)Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, (E)Zoar). All these [b]came as allies to (F)the valley of Siddim (that is, (G)the Salt Sea). Now for twelve years they had served Chedorlaomer, but the thirteenth year they rebelled. So in the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer and the kings that were with him, came and struck the (H)Rephaim in (I)Ashteroth-karnaim and the Zuzim in Ham and the Emim in [c](J)Shaveh-kiriathaim, and the (K)Horites in their Mount Seir, as far as (L)El-paran, which is by the wilderness. Then they turned back and came to En-mishpat (that is, (M)Kadesh). And they struck all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, who were living in (N)Hazazon-tamar. And the king of Sodom and the king of Gomorrah and the king of Admah and the king of Zeboiim and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) came out; and they arranged themselves for battle against them in (O)the valley of Siddim, against Chedorlaomer king of Elam and Tidal king of [d]Goiim and Amraphel king of Shinar and Arioch king of Ellasar, four kings against five— 10 now the valley of Siddim was full of tar pits—and (P)the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and they fell [e]into them; but those who remained behind fled to the (Q)hill country. 11 Then they took all the possessions of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food supply and departed. 12 They also took Lot, (R)Abram’s nephew, and his possessions and departed; (S)now he was living in Sodom.

13 Then [f]a fugitive came and told Abram the (T)Hebrew. Now he was dwelling by the [g](U)oaks of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and brother of Aner, and these were [h](V)in a covenant with Abram. 14 So Abram heard that (W)his [i]relative had been taken captive, and he [j]led out his trained men, (X)born in his house, 318 in number, and went in pursuit as far as (Y)Dan. 15 (Z)And he divided [k]his men against them by night, he and his servants, and struck them and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is [l]north of (AA)Damascus. 16 And he (AB)brought back all the possessions, and he also brought back (AC)his [m]relative Lot with his possessions and also the women and the people.

Melchizedek Blesses Abram

17 Then after he came back from striking down Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, (AD)the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the valley of Shaveh (that is, (AE)the King’s Valley). 18 And (AF)Melchizedek king of Salem brought out (AG)bread and wine; now he was a (AH)priest of [n]God Most High. 19 Then he blessed him and said,

“Blessed be Abram of [o]God Most High,
[p](AI)Possessor of heaven and earth;
20 And blessed be [q]God Most High,
Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.”

(AJ)Then he gave him a tenth of all. 21 And the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give the [r]people to me, but take the possessions for yourself.” 22 Then Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have [s]raised my hand to Yahweh [t](AK)God Most High, [u](AL)possessor of heaven and earth, 23 that (AM)I will not take a thread or a sandal strap or anything that is yours, so that you would not say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’ 24 [v]I will take nothing except what the young men have eaten, and the share of the men who went with me, (AN)Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their share.”

Lot’s Captivity and Rescue

14 In the days of King Amraphel of Shinar, King Arioch of Ellasar, King Chedorlaomer of Elam, and King Tidal of Goiim,(A) these kings made war with King Bera of Sodom, King Birsha of Gomorrah, King Shinab of Admah, King Shemeber of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela, that is, Zoar.(B) All these joined forces in the Valley of Siddim, that is, the Dead Sea.[a](C) Twelve years they had served Chedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled. In the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him came and subdued the Rephaim in Ashteroth-karnaim, the Zuzim in Ham, the Emim in Shaveh-kiriathaim,(D) and the Horites in the hill country of Seir as far as El-paran on the edge of the wilderness;(E) then they turned back and came to En-mishpat, that is, Kadesh, and subdued all the country of the Amalekites and also the Amorites who lived in Hazazon-tamar.(F) Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela, that is, Zoar, went out, and they joined battle in the Valley of Siddim with King Chedorlaomer of Elam, King Tidal of Goiim, King Amraphel of Shinar, and King Arioch of Ellasar, four kings against five. 10 Now the Valley of Siddim was full of bitumen pits, and as the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some fell into them, and the rest fled to the hill country. 11 So the enemy took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their provisions and went their way;(G) 12 they also took Lot, the son of Abram’s brother, who lived in Sodom, and his goods and departed.(H)

13 Then one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew, who was living by the oaks[b] of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and of Aner; these were allies of Abram.(I) 14 When Abram heard that his nephew had been taken captive, he led forth his trained men, born in his house, three hundred eighteen of them, and went in pursuit as far as Dan.(J) 15 He divided his forces against them by night, he and his servants, and routed them and pursued them to Hobah, north of Damascus. 16 Then he brought back all the goods and also brought back his nephew Lot with his goods and the women and the people.(K)

Abram Blessed by Melchizedek

17 After his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh, that is, the King’s Valley.(L) 18 And King Melchizedek of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was priest of God Most High.[c](M) 19 He blessed him and said,

“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,[d]
    maker of heaven and earth,(N)
20 and blessed be God Most High,[e]
    who has delivered your enemies into your hand!”

And Abram gave him one-tenth of everything.(O) 21 Then the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, but take the goods for yourself.” 22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have sworn to God[f] Most High,[g] maker of heaven and earth,(P) 23 that I would not take a thread or a sandal strap or anything that is yours, so that you might not say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’(Q) 24 I will take nothing but what the young men have eaten and the share of the men who went with me: Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre. Let them take their share.”
