26 Then God said, “[a]Let (A)Us make (B)mankind in Our image, according to Our likeness; and [b]let them (C)rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the livestock and over all the earth, and over every crawling thing that crawls on the earth.” 27 So God created man (D)in His own image, in the image of God He created him; (E)male and female He created them. 28 God blessed them; and God said to them, “(F)Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that [c]moves on the earth.” 29 Then God said, “Behold, (G)I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the [d]surface of all the earth, and every tree [e]which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you; 30 and (H)to every animal of the earth and to every bird of the sky and to everything that [f]moves on the earth [g]which has life, I have given every green plant for food”; and it was so. 31 And God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very (I)good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

And so the heavens and the earth were completed, and all (J)their heavenly [h]lights. By (K)the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and (L)He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on it He rested from all His work which God had created [i]and made.

The Creation of Man and Woman

[j](M)This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in (N)the day that the Lord God made earth and heaven. (O)Now no shrub of the field was yet on the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, (P)for the Lord God had not sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to [k]cultivate the ground. But a [l]mist used to rise from the earth and water the whole [m]surface of the ground. Then the Lord God formed the man of (Q)dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the (R)man became a living [n]person. The Lord God planted a (S)garden toward the east, in Eden; and there He placed the man whom He had formed. Out of the ground the Lord God caused (T)every tree to grow that is pleasing to the sight and good for food; (U)the tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

10 Now a (V)river [o]flowed out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it divided and became four [p]rivers. 11 The name of the first is Pishon; it [q]flows around the whole land of (W)Havilah, where there is gold. 12 The gold of that land is good; the bdellium and the onyx stone are there as well. 13 The name of the second river is Gihon; it [r]flows around the whole land of Cush. 14 The name of the third river is [s](X)Tigris; it [t]flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the [u](Y)Euphrates.

15 Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate it and tend it. 16 The Lord God (Z)commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may freely eat; 17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not [v]eat, for on the day that you eat from it (AA)you will certainly die.”

18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; (AB)I will make him a helper [w]suitable for him.” 19 (AC)And out of the ground the Lord God formed every animal of the field and every bird of the sky, and (AD)brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all the livestock, and to the birds of the sky, and to every animal of the field, but for [x]Adam there was not found (AE)a helper [y]suitable for him. 21 So the Lord God caused a (AF)deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. 22 And the Lord God [z]fashioned into a woman (AG)the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said,

(AH)At last this is bone of my bones,
And flesh of my flesh;
[aa]She shall be called [ab]‘woman,’
Because [ac]she was taken out of [ad]man.”

24 (AI)For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. 25 (AJ)And the man and his wife were both naked, but they were not ashamed.

26 Then God said, “Let us(A) make mankind(B) in our image,(C) in our likeness,(D) so that they may rule(E) over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky,(F) over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

27 So God created(G) mankind(H) in his own image,(I)
    in the image of God(J) he created them;
    male and female(K) he created them.(L)

28 God blessed them and said to them,(M) “Be fruitful and increase in number;(N) fill the earth(O) and subdue it. Rule over(P) the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.(Q)

29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.(R) 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life(S) in it—I give every green plant for food.(T)” And it was so.

31 God saw all that he had made,(U) and it was very good.(V) And there was evening, and there was morning(W)—the sixth day.

Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.(X)

By the seventh day(Y) God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.(Z) Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy,(AA) because on it he rested(AB) from all the work of creating(AC) that he had done.

Adam and Eve

This is the account(AD) of the heavens and the earth when they were created,(AE) when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth[b] and no plant had yet sprung up,(AF) for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth(AG) and there was no one to work the ground, but streams[c] came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. Then the Lord God formed(AH) a man[d](AI) from the dust(AJ) of the ground(AK) and breathed into his nostrils the breath(AL) of life,(AM) and the man became a living being.(AN)

Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden;(AO) and there he put the man he had formed. The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees(AP) that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life(AQ) and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.(AR)

10 A river(AS) watering the garden flowed from Eden;(AT) from there it was separated into four headwaters. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah,(AU) where there is gold. 12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin[e](AV) and onyx are also there.) 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush.[f] 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris;(AW) it runs along the east side of Ashur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.(AX)

15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden(AY) to work it and take care of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;(AZ) 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,(BA) for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”(BB)

18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”(BC)

19 Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals(BD) and all the birds in the sky.(BE) He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called(BF) each living creature,(BG) that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.

But for Adam[g] no suitable helper(BH) was found. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep;(BI) and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs[h] and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib[i](BJ) he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

23 The man said,

“This is now bone of my bones
    and flesh of my flesh;(BK)
she shall be called(BL) ‘woman,’
    for she was taken out of man.(BM)

24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united(BN) to his wife, and they become one flesh.(BO)

25 Adam and his wife were both naked,(BP) and they felt no shame.
