Giacobbe a Betel

35 Dio disse a Giacobbe: «Alzati, và a Betel e abita là; costruisci in quel luogo un altare al Dio che ti è apparso quando fuggivi Esaù, tuo fratello». 2 Allora Giacobbe disse alla sua famiglia e a quanti erano con lui: «Eliminate gli dei stranieri che avete con voi, purificatevi e cambiate gli abiti. 3 Poi alziamoci e andiamo a Betel, dove io costruirò un altare al Dio che mi ha esaudito al tempo della mia angoscia e che è stato con me nel cammino che ho percorso». 4 Essi consegnarono a Giacobbe tutti gli dei stranieri che possedevano e i pendenti che avevano agli orecchi; Giacobbe li sotterrò sotto la quercia presso Sichem.

5 Poi levarono l'accampamento e un terrore molto forte assalì i popoli che stavano attorno a loro, così che non inseguirono i figli di Giacobbe. 6 Giacobbe e tutta la gente ch'era con lui arrivarono a Luz, cioè Betel, che è nel paese di Canaan. 7 Qui egli costruì un altare e chiamò quel luogo «El-Betel», perché là Dio gli si era rivelato, quando sfuggiva al fratello. 8 Allora morì Dèbora, la nutrice di Rebecca, e fu sepolta al disotto di Betel, ai piedi della quercia, che perciò si chiamò Quercia del Pianto.

9 Dio apparve un'altra volta a Giacobbe, quando tornava da Paddan-Aram, e lo benedisse. 10 Dio gli disse:

«Il tuo nome è Giacobbe.
Non ti chiamerai più Giacobbe,
ma Israele sarà il tuo nome».

Così lo si chiamò Israele. 11 Dio gli disse:

«Io sono Dio onnipotente.
Sii fecondo e diventa numeroso,
popolo e assemblea di popoli
verranno da te,
re usciranno dai tuoi fianchi.
12 Il paese che ho concesso
ad Abramo e a Isacco
darò a te
e alla tua stirpe dopo di te
darò il paese».

13 Dio scomparve da lui, nel luogo dove gli aveva parlato. 14 Allora Giacobbe eresse una stele, dove gli aveva parlato, una stele di pietra, e su di essa fece una libazione e versò olio. 15 Giacobbe chiamò Betel il luogo dove Dio gli aveva parlato.

Nascita di Beniamino e morte di Rachele

16 Poi levarono l'accampamento da Betel. Mancava ancora un tratto di cammino per arrivare ad Efrata, quando Rachele partorì ed ebbe un parto difficile. 17 Mentre penava a partorire, la levatrice le disse: «Non temere: anche questo è un figlio!». 18 Mentre esalava l'ultimo respiro, perché stava morendo, essa lo chiamò Ben-Oni, ma suo padre lo chiamò Beniamino. 19 Così Rachele morì e fu sepolta lungo la strada verso Efrata, cioè Betlemme. 20 Giacobbe eresse sulla sua tomba una stele. Questa stele della tomba di Rachele esiste fino ad oggi.

Incesto di Ruben

21 Poi Israele levò l'accampamento e piantò la tenda al di là di Migdal-Eder. 22 Mentre Israele abitava in quel paese, Ruben andò a unirsi con Bila, concubina del padre, e Israele lo venne a sapere.

I dodici figli di Giacobbe

I figli di Giacobbe furono dodici. 23 I figli di Lia: il primogenito di Giacobbe, Ruben, poi Simeone, Levi, Giuda, Issacar e Zàbulon. 24 I figli di Rachele: Giuseppe e Beniamino. 25 I figli di Bila, schiava di Rachele: Dan e Nèftali. 26 I figli di Zilpa, schiava di Lia: Gad e Aser. Questi sono i figli di Giacobbe che gli nacquero in Paddan-Aram.

Morte di Isacco

27 Poi Giacobbe venne da suo padre Isacco a Mamre, a Kiriat-Arba, cioè Ebron, dove Abramo e Isacco avevano soggiornato come forestieri. 28 Isacco raggiunse l'età di centottat'anni. 29 Poi Isacco spirò, morì e si riunì al suo parentado, vecchio e sazio di giorni. Lo seppellirono i suoi figli Esaù e Giacobbe.

Jacob Moves to Bethel

35 Then God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to (A)Bethel and [a]live there, and make an altar there to (B)God, who appeared to you (C)when you fled [b]from your brother Esau.” 2 So Jacob said to his (D)household and to all who were with him, “Put away (E)the foreign gods which are among you, and (F)purify yourselves and change your garments; 3 and let us arise and go up to Bethel, and I will make (G)an altar there to God, (H)who answered me in the day of my distress and (I)has been with me [c]wherever I have gone.” 4 So they gave to Jacob all the foreign gods which [d]they had and the rings which were in their ears, and Jacob hid them under the [e]oak which was near Shechem.

5 As they journeyed, there was [f](J)a great terror upon the cities which were around them, and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob. 6 So Jacob came to (K)Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him. 7 (L)He built an altar there, and called the place [g]El-bethel, because there God had revealed Himself to him when he fled [h]from his brother. 8 Now (M)Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, and she was buried below Bethel under the oak; it was named [i]Allon-bacuth.

Jacob Is Named Israel

9 Then God appeared to Jacob again when he came from Paddan-aram, and He (N)blessed him. 10 (O)God said to him,

“Your name is Jacob;
[j]You shall no longer be called Jacob,
But Israel shall be your name.”

Thus He called [k]him Israel. 11 God also said to him,

“I am [l](P)God Almighty;
(Q)Be fruitful and multiply;
A nation and a (R)company of nations shall [m]come from you,
And (S)kings shall [n]come forth from [o]you.
12 “(T)The land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac,
I will give it to you,
And I will give the land to your [p]descendants after you.”

13 Then (U)God went up from him in the place where He had spoken with him. 14 Jacob set up (V)a pillar in the place where He had spoken with him, a pillar of stone, and he poured out a drink offering on it; he also poured oil on it. 15 So Jacob named the place where God had spoken with him, [q](W)Bethel.

16 Then they journeyed from Bethel; and when there was still some distance to go to (X)Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth and she [r]suffered severe labor. 17 When she was in severe labor the midwife said to her, “Do not fear, for now (Y)you have another son.” 18 It came about as her soul was departing (for she died), that she named him [s]Ben-oni; but his father called him [t]Benjamin. 19 So (Z)Rachel died and was buried on the way to (AA)Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). 20 Jacob set up a pillar over her grave; that is the (AB)pillar of Rachel’s grave to this day. 21 Then Israel journeyed on and pitched his tent beyond the [u](AC)tower of [v]Eder.

22 It came about while Israel was dwelling in that land, that (AD)Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine, and Israel heard of it.

The Sons of Israel

Now there were twelve sons of Jacob— 23 (AE)the sons of Leah: Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, then Simeon and Levi and Judah and Issachar and Zebulun; 24 (AF)the sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin; 25 and (AG)the sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s maid: Dan and Naphtali; 26 and (AH)the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s maid: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Paddan-aram.

27 Jacob came to his father Isaac at (AI)Mamre of (AJ)Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had sojourned.

28 Now the days of Isaac were (AK)one hundred and eighty years. 29 Isaac breathed his last and died and was (AL)gathered to his people, an (AM)old man [w]of ripe age; and (AN)his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

Jacob Returns to Bethel

35 Then God said to Jacob, “Go up to Bethel(A) and settle there, and build an altar(B) there to God,(C) who appeared to you(D) when you were fleeing from your brother Esau.”(E)

2 So Jacob said to his household(F) and to all who were with him, “Get rid of the foreign gods(G) you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes.(H) 3 Then come, let us go up to Bethel, where I will build an altar to God,(I) who answered me in the day of my distress(J) and who has been with me wherever I have gone.(K)” 4 So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears,(L) and Jacob buried them under the oak(M) at Shechem.(N) 5 Then they set out, and the terror of God(O) fell on the towns all around them so that no one pursued them.(P)

6 Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz(Q) (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan.(R) 7 There he built an altar,(S) and he called the place El Bethel,[a](T) because it was there that God revealed himself to him(U) when he was fleeing from his brother.(V)

8 Now Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse,(W) died and was buried under the oak(X) outside Bethel.(Y) So it was named Allon Bakuth.[b]

9 After Jacob returned from Paddan Aram,[c](Z) God appeared to him again and blessed him.(AA) 10 God said to him, “Your name is Jacob,[d] but you will no longer be called Jacob; your name will be Israel.[e]”(AB) So he named him Israel.

11 And God said to him, “I am God Almighty[f];(AC) be fruitful and increase in number.(AD) A nation(AE) and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will be among your descendants.(AF) 12 The land I gave to Abraham and Isaac I also give to you, and I will give this land to your descendants after you.(AG)”(AH) 13 Then God went up from him(AI) at the place where he had talked with him.

14 Jacob set up a stone pillar(AJ) at the place where God had talked with him, and he poured out a drink offering(AK) on it; he also poured oil on it.(AL) 15 Jacob called the place where God had talked with him Bethel.[g](AM)

The Deaths of Rachel and Isaac(AN)

16 Then they moved on from Bethel. While they were still some distance from Ephrath,(AO) Rachel(AP) began to give birth and had great difficulty. 17 And as she was having great difficulty in childbirth, the midwife(AQ) said to her, “Don’t despair, for you have another son.”(AR) 18 As she breathed her last—for she was dying—she named her son Ben-Oni.[h](AS) But his father named him Benjamin.[i](AT)

19 So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath(AU) (that is, Bethlehem(AV)). 20 Over her tomb Jacob set up a pillar, and to this day(AW) that pillar marks Rachel’s tomb.(AX)

21 Israel moved on again and pitched his tent beyond Migdal Eder.(AY) 22 While Israel was living in that region, Reuben went in and slept with his father’s concubine(AZ) Bilhah,(BA) and Israel heard of it.

Jacob had twelve sons:

23 The sons of Leah:(BB)

Reuben the firstborn(BC) of Jacob,

Simeon, Levi, Judah,(BD) Issachar and Zebulun.(BE)

24 The sons of Rachel:

Joseph(BF) and Benjamin.(BG)

25 The sons of Rachel’s servant Bilhah:(BH)

Dan and Naphtali.(BI)

26 The sons of Leah’s servant Zilpah:(BJ)

Gad(BK) and Asher.(BL)

These were the sons of Jacob,(BM) who were born to him in Paddan Aram.(BN)

27 Jacob came home to his father Isaac(BO) in Mamre,(BP) near Kiriath Arba(BQ) (that is, Hebron),(BR) where Abraham and Isaac had stayed.(BS) 28 Isaac lived a hundred and eighty years.(BT) 29 Then he breathed his last and died and was gathered to his people,(BU) old and full of years.(BV) And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.(BW)
