Giacobbe arriva presso Làbano
29 Poi Giacobbe si mise in cammino e andò nel paese degli orientali. 2 Vide nella campagna un pozzo e tre greggi di piccolo bestiame, accovacciati vicino, perché a quel pozzo si abbeveravano i greggi, ma la pietra sulla bocca del pozzo era grande. 3 Quando tutti i greggi si erano radunati là, i pastori rotolavano la pietra dalla bocca del pozzo e abbeveravano il bestiame; poi rimettevano la pietra al posto sulla bocca del pozzo. 4 Giacobbe disse loro: «Fratelli miei, di dove siete?». Risposero: «Siamo di Carran». 5 Disse loro: «Conoscete Làbano, figlio di Nacor?». Risposero: «Lo conosciamo». 6 Disse loro: «Sta bene?». Risposero: «Sì; ecco la figlia Rachele che viene con il gregge». 7 Riprese: «Eccoci ancora in pieno giorno: non è tempo di radunare il bestiame. Date da bere al bestiame e andate a pascolare!». 8 Risposero: «Non possiamo, finché non siano radunati tutti i greggi e si rotoli la pietra dalla bocca del pozzo; allora faremo bere il gregge».
9 Egli stava ancora parlando con loro, quando arrivò Rachele con il bestiame del padre, perché era una pastorella. 10 Quando Giacobbe vide Rachele, figlia di Làbano, fratello di sua madre, insieme con il bestiame di Làbano, fratello di sua madre, Giacobbe, fattosi avanti, rotolò la pietra dalla bocca del pozzo e fece bere le pecore di Làbano, fratello di sua madre. 11 Poi Giacobbe baciò Rachele e pianse ad alta voce. 12 Giacobbe rivelò a Rachele che egli era parente del padre di lei, perché figlio di Rebecca. Allora essa corse a riferirlo al padre. 13 Quando Làbano seppe che era Giacobbe, il figlio di sua sorella, gli corse incontro, lo abbracciò, lo baciò e lo condusse nella sua casa. Ed egli raccontò a Làbano tutte le sue vicende. 14 Allora Làbano gli disse: «Davvero tu sei mio osso e mia carne!». Così dimorò presso di lui per un mese.
I due matrimoni di Giacobbe
15 Poi Làbano disse a Giacobbe: «Poiché sei mio parente, mi dovrai forse servire gratuitamente? Indicami quale deve essere il tuo salario». 16 Ora Làbano aveva due figlie; la maggiore si chiamava Lia e la più piccola si chiamava Rachele. 17 Lia aveva gli occhi smorti, mentre Rachele era bella di forme e avvenente di aspetto, 18 perciò Giacobbe amava Rachele. Disse dunque: «Io ti servirò sette anni per Rachele, tua figlia minore». 19 Rispose Làbano: «Preferisco darla a te piuttosto che a un estraneo. Rimani con me». 20 Così Giacobbe servì sette anni per Rachele: gli sembrarono pochi giorni tanto era il suo amore per lei. 21 Poi Giacobbe disse a Làbano: «Dammi la mia sposa, perché il mio tempo è compiuto e voglio unirmi a lei». 22 Allora Làbano radunò tutti gli uomini del luogo e diede un banchetto. 23 Ma quando fu sera, egli prese la figlia Lia e la condusse da lui ed egli si unì a lei. 24 Làbano diede la propria schiava Zilpa alla figLia, come schiava. 25 Quando fu mattina... ecco era Lia! Allora Giacobbe disse a Làbano: «Che mi hai fatto? Non è forse per Rachele che sono stato al tuo servizio? Perché mi hai ingannato?». 26 Rispose Làbano: «Non si usa far così nel nostro paese, dare, cioè, la più piccola prima della maggiore. 27 Finisci questa settimana nuziale, poi ti darò anche quest'altra per il servizio che tu presterai presso di me per altri sette anni». 28 Giacobbe fece così: terminò la settimana nuziale e allora Làbano gli diede in moglie la figlia Rachele. 29 Làbano diede alla figlia Rachele la propria schiava Bila, come schiava. 30 Egli si unì anche a Rachele e amò Rachele più di Lia. Fu ancora al servizio di lui per altri sette anni.
I figli di Giacobbe
31 Ora il Signore, vedendo che Lia veniva trascurata, la rese feconda, mentre Rachele rimaneva sterile. 32 Così Lia concepì e partorì un figlio e lo chiamò Ruben, perché disse: «Il Signore ha visto la mia umiliazione; certo, ora mio marito mi amerà». 33 Poi concepì ancora un figlio e disse: «Il Signore ha udito che io ero trascurata e mi ha dato anche questo». E lo chiamò Simeone. 34 Poi concepì ancora e partorì un figlio e disse: «Questa volta mio marito mi si affezionerà, perché gli ho partorito tre figli». Per questo lo chiamò Levi. 35 Concepì ancora e partorì un figlio e disse: «Questa volta loderò il Signore». Per questo lo chiamò Giuda. Poi cessò di avere figli.

Giacobbe a Caran
29 (A)Poi Giacobbe si mise in cammino e andò nel paese degli Orientali. 2 Egli vide nei campi un pozzo e tre greggi di pecore, accovacciate lì vicino; a quel pozzo infatti si abbeveravano le greggi; ma la pietra sulla bocca del pozzo era grande. 3 Dopo che tutte le greggi si erano radunate là, i pastori rotolavano la pietra dalla bocca del pozzo, abbeveravano le pecore, poi rimettevano la pietra al suo posto, sulla bocca del pozzo.
4 Giacobbe disse ai pastori: «Fratelli miei, di dove siete?» Quelli risposero: «Siamo di Caran». 5 Egli disse loro: «Conoscete Labano, figlio di Naor?» Ed essi: «Lo conosciamo». 6 Egli disse loro: «Sta bene?» Quelli risposero: «Sta bene; ecco Rachele, sua figlia, che viene con le pecore». 7 Egli disse: «Ecco, è ancora pieno giorno, e non è tempo di radunare il bestiame; abbeverate le pecore e portatele al pascolo». 8 Quelli risposero: «Non possiamo, finché non siano radunate tutte le greggi; allora si rotola la pietra dalla bocca del pozzo e abbeveriamo le pecore».
9 Mentre egli parlava ancora con loro, giunse Rachele con le pecore di suo padre; perché era lei che le portava al pascolo. 10 Quando Giacobbe vide Rachele figlia di Labano, fratello di sua madre, e le pecore di Labano, fratello di sua madre, si avvicinò, rotolò la pietra dalla bocca del pozzo e abbeverò il gregge di Labano, fratello di sua madre. 11 Poi Giacobbe baciò Rachele, alzò la voce e pianse. 12 Giacobbe fece sapere a Rachele che egli era parente del padre di lei e che era figlio di Rebecca. Ed ella corse a dirlo a suo padre. 13 Appena Labano ebbe udito le notizie di Giacobbe figlio di sua sorella, gli corse incontro, l’abbracciò, lo baciò e lo condusse a casa sua. Giacobbe raccontò a Labano tutte queste cose; 14 e Labano gli disse: «Tu sei proprio mie ossa e mia carne!» Così abitò presso di lui per un mese.
Lea e Rachele
15 (B)Poi Labano disse a Giacobbe: «Perché sei mio parente devi forse servirmi per nulla? Dimmi quale dev’essere il tuo salario». 16 Or Labano aveva due figlie: la maggiore si chiamava Lea e la minore Rachele. 17 Lea aveva gli occhi delicati[a], ma Rachele era avvenente e di bell’aspetto. 18 Giacobbe amava Rachele e disse a Labano: «Io ti servirò sette anni, per Rachele tua figlia minore». 19 Labano rispose: «È meglio che io la dia a te piuttosto che a un altro uomo; resta con me».
20 Giacobbe servì sette anni per Rachele; e gli parvero pochi giorni, a causa del suo amore per lei. 21 Poi Giacobbe disse a Labano: «Dammi mia moglie, perché il mio tempo è compiuto, e io andrò da lei». 22 Allora Labano radunò tutta la gente del luogo e fece un banchetto. 23 Ma, la sera, prese sua figlia Lea e la condusse da Giacobbe, il quale si unì a lei. 24 Labano diede la sua serva Zilpa per serva a Lea, sua figlia.
25 L’indomani mattina ecco che era Lea! Giacobbe disse a Labano: «Che mi hai fatto? Non è per Rachele che ti ho servito? Perché mi hai ingannato?» 26 Labano rispose: «Non è usanza da noi dare la minore prima della maggiore. Finisci la settimana nuziale con questa 27 e ti daremo anche l’altra, per il servizio che presterai da me per altri sette anni». 28 Giacobbe fece così, e finì la settimana di quello sposalizio; poi Labano gli diede in moglie sua figlia Rachele. 29 Labano diede la sua serva Bila per serva a Rachele, sua figlia.
30 Giacobbe si unì pure a Rachele e amò Rachele più di Lea, e servì Labano per altri sette anni.
I figli di Giacobbe
31 (C)Il Signore, vedendo che Lea era odiata, la rese feconda; ma Rachele era sterile. 32 Lea concepì, partorì un figlio e lo chiamò Ruben[b], perché disse: «Il Signore ha visto la mia afflizione; ora mio marito mi amerà». 33 Poi concepì di nuovo e partorì un figlio, e disse: «Il Signore ha udito che io ero odiata, e mi ha dato anche questo figlio». E lo chiamò Simeone[c]. 34 Concepì di nuovo e partorì un figlio, e disse: «Questa volta mio marito sarà ben unito a me, perché gli ho partorito tre figli». Per questo fu chiamato Levi[d]. 35 E concepì di nuovo, partorì un figlio e disse: «Questa volta celebrerò il Signore». Perciò lo chiamò Giuda[e]. Poi cessò d’aver figli.

Jacob Arrives in Northwest Mesopotamia
29 Then Jacob continued his journey. He came to the land of the people of the East. 2 He looked and saw a well in the field. Three flocks of sheep were lying nearby, because they drank water from this well. A large stone covered the mouth of the well. 3 All the flocks would gather there. The shepherds would roll the stone away from the well and water the sheep. Then they would put the stone back in its place.
4 Jacob said to the shepherds there, “My brothers, where are you from?”
They answered, “We are from Haran.”
5 Then Jacob asked, “Do you know Laban grandson of Nahor?”
They answered, “We know him.”
6 Then Jacob asked, “How is he?”
They answered, “He is well. Look, his daughter Rachel is coming now with his sheep.”
7 Jacob said, “But look, it is still the middle part of the day. It is not time for the sheep to be gathered for the night. So give them water and let them go back into the pasture.”
8 But they said, “We cannot do that until all the flocks are gathered. Then we will roll away the stone from the mouth of the well and water the sheep.”
9 While Jacob was talking with the shepherds, Rachel came with her father’s sheep. It was her job to take care of the sheep. 10 Then Jacob saw Laban’s daughter Rachel and Laban’s sheep. So he went to the well and rolled the stone from its mouth. Then he watered Laban’s sheep. Now Laban was the brother of Rebekah, Jacob’s mother. 11 Then Jacob kissed Rachel and cried. 12 He told her that he was from her father’s family. He said that he was the son of Rebekah. So Rachel ran home and told her father.
13 When Laban heard the news about his sister’s son Jacob, Laban ran to meet him. Laban hugged him and kissed him and brought him to his house. Jacob told Laban everything that had happened.
14 Then Laban said, “You are my own flesh and blood.”
Jacob Is Tricked
So Jacob stayed there a month. 15 Then Laban said to Jacob, “You are my relative. But it is not right for you to keep on working for me without pay. What would you like me to pay you?”
16 Now Laban had two daughters. The older was Leah, and the younger was Rachel. 17 Leah had weak eyes, but Rachel was very beautiful. 18 Jacob loved Rachel. So he said to Laban, “Let me marry your younger daughter Rachel. If you will, I will work seven years for you.”
19 Laban said, “It would be better for her to marry you than someone else. So stay here with me.” 20 So Jacob worked for Laban seven years so he could marry Rachel. But they seemed to him like just a few days. This was because he loved Rachel very much.
21 After seven years Jacob said to Laban, “Give me Rachel so that I may marry her. The time I promised to work for you is over.”
22 So Laban gave a feast for all the people there. 23 That evening Laban brought his daughter Leah to Jacob. Jacob and Leah had intimate relations together. 24 (Laban gave his slave girl Zilpah to his daughter to be her servant.) 25 In the morning Jacob saw that he had had intimate relations with Leah! He said to Laban, “What have you done to me? I worked hard for you so that I could marry Rachel! Why did you trick me?”
26 Laban said, “In our country we do not allow the younger daughter to marry before the older daughter. 27 But complete the full week of the marriage ceremony with Leah. I will give you Rachel to marry also. But you must serve me another seven years.”
28 So Jacob did this and completed the week with Leah. Then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel as a wife. 29 (Laban gave his slave girl Bilhah to his daughter Rachel to be her servant.) 30 So Jacob had intimate relations with Rachel also. And Jacob loved Rachel more than Leah. Jacob worked for Laban for another seven years.
Jacob’s Family Grows
31 The Lord saw that Jacob loved Rachel more than Leah. So the Lord made it possible for Leah to have children. But Rachel did not have any children. 32 Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben,[a] because she said, “The Lord has seen my troubles. Surely now my husband will love me.”
33 Leah became pregnant again and gave birth to another son. She named him Simeon.[b] She said, “The Lord has heard that I am not loved. So he gave me this son.”
34 Leah became pregnant again and gave birth to another son. She named him Levi.[c] Leah said, “Now, surely my husband will be close to me. I have given him three sons.”
35 Then Leah gave birth to another son. She named him Judah.[d] Leah named him this because she said, “Now I will praise the Lord.” Then Leah stopped having children.

Jacob Arrives in Paddan Aram
29 Then Jacob continued on his journey and came to the land of the eastern peoples.(A) 2 There he saw a well in the open country, with three flocks of sheep lying near it because the flocks were watered from that well.(B) The stone(C) over the mouth of the well was large. 3 When all the flocks were gathered there, the shepherds would roll the stone(D) away from the well’s mouth and water the sheep.(E) Then they would return the stone to its place over the mouth of the well.
4 Jacob asked the shepherds, “My brothers, where are you from?”(F)
“We’re from Harran,(G)” they replied.
5 He said to them, “Do you know Laban, Nahor’s grandson?”(H)
“Yes, we know him,” they answered.
6 Then Jacob asked them, “Is he well?”
“Yes, he is,” they said, “and here comes his daughter Rachel(I) with the sheep.(J)”
7 “Look,” he said, “the sun is still high; it is not time for the flocks to be gathered. Water the sheep and take them back to pasture.”
8 “We can’t,” they replied, “until all the flocks are gathered and the stone(K) has been rolled away from the mouth of the well. Then we will water(L) the sheep.”
9 While he was still talking with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep,(M) for she was a shepherd. 10 When Jacob saw Rachel(N) daughter of his uncle Laban, and Laban’s sheep, he went over and rolled the stone(O) away from the mouth of the well and watered(P) his uncle’s sheep.(Q) 11 Then Jacob kissed(R) Rachel and began to weep aloud.(S) 12 He had told Rachel that he was a relative(T) of her father and a son of Rebekah.(U) So she ran and told her father.(V)
13 As soon as Laban(W) heard the news about Jacob, his sister’s son, he hurried to meet him. He embraced him(X) and kissed him and brought him to his home, and there Jacob told him all these things. 14 Then Laban said to him, “You are my own flesh and blood.”(Y)
Jacob Marries Leah and Rachel
After Jacob had stayed with him for a whole month, 15 Laban said to him, “Just because you are a relative(Z) of mine, should you work for me for nothing? Tell me what your wages(AA) should be.”
16 Now Laban had two daughters; the name of the older was Leah,(AB) and the name of the younger was Rachel.(AC) 17 Leah had weak[a] eyes, but Rachel(AD) had a lovely figure and was beautiful.(AE) 18 Jacob was in love with Rachel(AF) and said, “I’ll work for you seven years in return for your younger daughter Rachel.”(AG)
19 Laban said, “It’s better that I give her to you than to some other man. Stay here with me.” 20 So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel,(AH) but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.(AI)
21 Then Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife. My time is completed, and I want to make love to her.(AJ)”
22 So Laban brought together all the people of the place and gave a feast.(AK) 23 But when evening came, he took his daughter Leah(AL) and brought her to Jacob, and Jacob made love to her. 24 And Laban gave his servant Zilpah(AM) to his daughter as her attendant.(AN)
25 When morning came, there was Leah! So Jacob said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me?(AO) I served you for Rachel, didn’t I? Why have you deceived me?(AP)”
26 Laban replied, “It is not our custom here to give the younger daughter in marriage before the older one.(AQ) 27 Finish this daughter’s bridal week;(AR) then we will give you the younger one also, in return for another seven years of work.(AS)”
28 And Jacob did so. He finished the week with Leah, and then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel to be his wife.(AT) 29 Laban gave his servant Bilhah(AU) to his daughter Rachel as her attendant.(AV) 30 Jacob made love to Rachel also, and his love for Rachel was greater than his love for Leah.(AW) And he worked for Laban another seven years.(AX)
Jacob’s Children
31 When the Lord saw that Leah was not loved,(AY) he enabled her to conceive,(AZ) but Rachel remained childless. 32 Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son.(BA) She named him Reuben,[b](BB) for she said, “It is because the Lord has seen my misery.(BC) Surely my husband will love me now.”
33 She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “Because the Lord heard that I am not loved,(BD) he gave me this one too.” So she named him Simeon.[c](BE)
34 Again she conceived, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “Now at last my husband will become attached to me,(BF) because I have borne him three sons.” So he was named Levi.[d](BG)
35 She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, “This time I will praise the Lord.” So she named him Judah.[e](BH) Then she stopped having children.(BI)
