Isacco a Gerar
26 Venne una carestia nel paese oltre la prima che era avvenuta ai tempi di Abramo, e Isacco andò a Gerar presso Abimèlech, re dei Filistei. 2 Gli apparve il Signore e gli disse: «Non scendere in Egitto, abita nel paese che io ti indicherò. 3 Rimani in questo paese e io sarò con te e ti benedirò, perché a te e alla tua discendeza io concederò tutti questi territori, e manterrò il giuramento che ho fatto ad Abramo tuo padre. 4 Renderò la tua discendenza numerosa come le stelle del cielo e concederò alla tua discendenza tutti questi territori: tutte le nazioni della terra saranno benedette per la tua discendenza; 5 per il fatto che Abramo ha obbedito alla mia voce e ha osservato ciò che io gli avevo prescritto: i miei comandamenti, le mie istituzioni e le mie leggi».
6 Così Isacco dimorò in Gerar. 7 Gli uomini del luogo lo interrogarono intorno alla moglie ed egli disse: «E' mia sorella»; infatti aveva timore di dire: «E' mia moglie», pensando che gli uomini del luogo lo uccidessero per causa di Rebecca, che era di bell'aspetto.
8 Era là da molto tempo, quando Abimèlech, re dei Filistei, si affacciò alla finestra e vide Isacco scherzare con la propria moglie Rebecca. 9 Abimèlech chiamò Isacco e disse: «Sicuramente essa è tua moglie. E perché tu hai detto: E' mia sorella?». Gli rispose Isacco: «Perché mi son detto: io non muoia per causa di lei!». 10 Riprese Abimèlech: «Che ci hai fatto? Poco ci mancava che qualcuno del popolo si unisse a tua moglie e tu attirassi su di noi una colpa». 11 Abimèlech diede quest'ordine a tutto il popolo: «Chi tocca questo uomo o la sua moglie sarà messo a morte!».
12 Poi Isacco fece una semina in quel paese e raccolse quell'anno il centuplo. Il Signore infatti lo aveva benedetto. 13 E l'uomo divenne ricco e crebbe tanto in ricchezze fino a divenire ricchissimo: 14 possedeva greggi di piccolo e di grosso bestiame e numerosi schiavi e i Filistei cominciarono ad invidiarlo.
I pozzi tra Gerar e Bersabea
15 Tutti i pozzi che avevano scavati i servi di suo padre ai tempi del padre Abramo, i Filistei li avevano turati riempiendoli di terra. 16 Abimèlech disse ad Isacco: «Vàttene via da noi, perché tu sei molto più potente di noi». 17 Isacco andò via di là, si accampò sul torrente di Gerar e vi si stabilì. 18 Isacco tornò a scavare i pozzi d'acqua, che avevano scavati i servi di suo padre, Abramo, e che i Filistei avevano turati dopo la morte di Abramo, e li chiamò come li aveva chiamati suo padre. 19 I servi di Isacco scavarono poi nella valle e vi trovarono un pozzo di acqua viva. 20 Ma i pastori di Gerar litigarono con i pastori di Isacco, dicendo: «L'acqua è nostra!».
Allora egli chiamò Esech il pozzo, perché quelli avevano litigato con lui. 21 Scavarono un altro pozzo, ma quelli litigarono anche per questo ed egli lo chiamò Sitna. 22 Allora si mosse di là e scavò un altro pozzo, per il quale non litigarono; allora egli lo chiamò Recobòt e disse: «Ora il Signore ci ha dato spazio libero perché noi prosperiamo nel paese». 23 Di là andò a Bersabea. 24 E in quella notte gli apparve il Signore e disse:
«Io sono il Dio di Abramo, tuo padre;
non temere perché io sono con te.
Ti benedirò
e moltiplicherò la tua discendenza
per amore di Abramo, mio servo».
25 Allora egli costruì in quel luogo un altare e invocò il nome del Signore; lì piantò la tenda. E i servi di Isacco scavarono un pozzo.
Alleanza con Abimèlech
26 Intanto Abimèlech da Gerar era andato da lui, insieme con Acuzzat, suo amico, e Picol, capo del suo esercito. 27 Isacco disse loro: «Perché siete venuti da me, mentre voi mi odiate e mi avete scacciato da voi?». 28 Gli risposero: «Abbiamo visto che il Signore è con te e abbiamo detto: vi sia un giuramento tra di noi, tra noi e te, e concludiamo un'alleanza con te: 29 tu non ci farai alcun male, come noi non ti abbiamo toccato e non ti abbiamo fatto se non il bene e ti abbiamo lasciato andare in pace. Tu sei ora un uomo benedetto dal Signore». 30 Allora imbandì loro un convito e mangiarono e bevvero. 31 Alzatisi di buon mattino, si prestarono giuramento l'un l'altro, poi Isacco li congedò e partirono da lui in pace. 32 Proprio in quel giorno arrivarono i servi di Isacco e lo informarono a proposito del pozzo che avevano scavato e gli dissero: «Abbiamo trovato l'acqua». 33 Allora egli lo chiamò Sibea: per questo la città si chiama Bersabea fino ad oggi.

34 Quando Esaù ebbe quarant'anni, prese in moglie Giudit, figlia di Beeri l'Hittita, e Basemat, figlia di Elon l'Hittita. 35 Esse furono causa d'intima amarezza per Isacco e per Rebecca.

26 Después hubo hambre en la tierra, además de la primera hambre que hubo en los días de Abraham; y se fue Isaac a Abimelec rey de los filisteos, en Gerar. 2 Y se le apareció Jehová, y le dijo: No desciendas a Egipto; habita en la tierra que yo te diré. 3 Habita como forastero en esta tierra, y estaré contigo, y te bendeciré; porque a ti y a tu descendencia daré todas estas tierras, y confirmaré el juramento que hice a Abraham tu padre. 4 Multiplicaré tu descendencia como las estrellas del cielo, y daré a tu descendencia todas estas tierras; y todas las naciones de la tierra serán benditas en tu simiente,(A) 5 por cuanto oyó Abraham mi voz, y guardó mi precepto, mis mandamientos, mis estatutos y mis leyes.
6 Habitó, pues, Isaac en Gerar. 7 Y los hombres de aquel lugar le preguntaron acerca de su mujer; y él respondió: Es mi hermana;(B) porque tuvo miedo de decir: Es mi mujer; pensando que tal vez los hombres del lugar lo matarían por causa de Rebeca, pues ella era de hermoso aspecto. 8 Sucedió que después que él estuvo allí muchos días, Abimelec, rey de los filisteos, mirando por una ventana, vio a Isaac que acariciaba a Rebeca su mujer. 9 Y llamó Abimelec a Isaac, y dijo: He aquí ella es de cierto tu mujer. ¿Cómo, pues, dijiste: Es mi hermana? E Isaac le respondió: Porque dije: Quizá moriré por causa de ella. 10 Y Abimelec dijo: ¿Por qué nos has hecho esto? Por poco hubiera dormido alguno del pueblo con tu mujer, y hubieras traído sobre nosotros el pecado. 11 Entonces Abimelec mandó a todo el pueblo, diciendo: El que tocare a este hombre o a su mujer, de cierto morirá.
12 Y sembró Isaac en aquella tierra, y cosechó aquel año ciento por uno; y le bendijo Jehová. 13 El varón se enriqueció, y fue prosperado, y se engrandeció hasta hacerse muy poderoso. 14 Y tuvo hato de ovejas, y hato de vacas, y mucha labranza; y los filisteos le tuvieron envidia. 15 Y todos los pozos que habían abierto los criados de Abraham su padre en sus días, los filisteos los habían cegado y llenado de tierra. 16 Entonces dijo Abimelec a Isaac: Apártate de nosotros, porque mucho más poderoso que nosotros te has hecho.
17 E Isaac se fue de allí, y acampó en el valle de Gerar, y habitó allí. 18 Y volvió a abrir Isaac los pozos de agua que habían abierto en los días de Abraham su padre, y que los filisteos habían cegado después de la muerte de Abraham; y los llamó por los nombres que su padre los había llamado. 19 Pero cuando los siervos de Isaac cavaron en el valle, y hallaron allí un pozo de aguas vivas, 20 los pastores de Gerar riñeron con los pastores de Isaac, diciendo: El agua es nuestra. Por eso llamó el nombre del pozo Esek,[a] porque habían altercado con él. 21 Y abrieron otro pozo, y también riñeron sobre él; y llamó su nombre Sitna.[b] 22 Y se apartó de allí, y abrió otro pozo, y no riñeron sobre él; y llamó su nombre Rehobot,[c] y dijo: Porque ahora Jehová nos ha prosperado, y fructificaremos en la tierra.
23 Y de allí subió a Beerseba. 24 Y se le apareció Jehová aquella noche, y le dijo: Yo soy el Dios de Abraham tu padre; no temas, porque yo estoy contigo, y te bendeciré, y multiplicaré tu descendencia por amor de Abraham mi siervo. 25 Y edificó allí un altar, e invocó el nombre de Jehová, y plantó allí su tienda; y abrieron allí los siervos de Isaac un pozo.
26 Y Abimelec(C) vino a él desde Gerar, y Ahuzat, amigo suyo, y Ficol, capitán de su ejército. 27 Y les dijo Isaac: ¿Por qué venís a mí, pues que me habéis aborrecido, y me echasteis de entre vosotros? 28 Y ellos respondieron: Hemos visto que Jehová está contigo; y dijimos: Haya ahora juramento entre nosotros, entre tú y nosotros, y haremos pacto contigo, 29 que no nos hagas mal, como nosotros no te hemos tocado, y como solamente te hemos hecho bien, y te enviamos en paz; tú eres ahora bendito de Jehová. 30 Entonces él les hizo banquete, y comieron y bebieron. 31 Y se levantaron de madrugada, y juraron el uno al otro; e Isaac los despidió, y ellos se despidieron de él en paz. 32 En aquel día sucedió que vinieron los criados de Isaac, y le dieron nuevas acerca del pozo que habían abierto, y le dijeron: Hemos hallado agua. 33 Y lo llamó Seba; por esta causa el nombre de aquella ciudad es Beerseba hasta este día.
34 Y cuando Esaú era de cuarenta años, tomó por mujer a Judit hija de Beeri heteo, y a Basemat hija de Elón heteo; 35 y fueron amargura de espíritu para Isaac y para Rebeca.

Isaac and Abimelek(A)
26 Now there was a famine in the land(B)—besides the previous famine in Abraham’s time—and Isaac went to Abimelek king of the Philistines(C) in Gerar.(D) 2 The Lord appeared(E) to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt;(F) live in the land where I tell you to live.(G) 3 Stay in this land for a while,(H) and I will be with you(I) and will bless you.(J) For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands(K) and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham.(L) 4 I will make your descendants(M) as numerous as the stars in the sky(N) and will give them all these lands,(O) and through your offspring[a] all nations on earth will be blessed,[b](P) 5 because Abraham obeyed me(Q) and did everything I required of him, keeping my commands, my decrees(R) and my instructions.(S)” 6 So Isaac stayed in Gerar.(T)
7 When the men of that place asked him about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,(U)” because he was afraid to say, “She is my wife.” He thought, “The men of this place might kill me on account of Rebekah, because she is beautiful.”
8 When Isaac had been there a long time, Abimelek king of the Philistines(V) looked down from a window and saw Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah. 9 So Abimelek summoned Isaac and said, “She is really your wife! Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’?(W)”
Isaac answered him, “Because I thought I might lose my life on account of her.”
10 Then Abimelek said, “What is this you have done to us?(X) One of the men might well have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.”
11 So Abimelek gave orders to all the people: “Anyone who harms(Y) this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”(Z)
12 Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold,(AA) because the Lord blessed him.(AB) 13 The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy.(AC) 14 He had so many flocks and herds and servants(AD) that the Philistines envied him.(AE) 15 So all the wells(AF) that his father’s servants had dug in the time of his father Abraham, the Philistines stopped up,(AG) filling them with earth.
16 Then Abimelek said to Isaac, “Move away from us;(AH) you have become too powerful for us.(AI)”
17 So Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar,(AJ) where he settled. 18 Isaac reopened the wells(AK) that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them.
19 Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there. 20 But the herders of Gerar quarreled(AL) with those of Isaac and said, “The water is ours!”(AM) So he named the well Esek,[c] because they disputed with him. 21 Then they dug another well, but they quarreled(AN) over that one also; so he named it Sitnah.[d] 22 He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth,[e](AO) saying, “Now the Lord has given us room(AP) and we will flourish(AQ) in the land.”
23 From there he went up to Beersheba.(AR) 24 That night the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham.(AS) Do not be afraid,(AT) for I am with you;(AU) I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants(AV) for the sake of my servant Abraham.”(AW)
25 Isaac built an altar(AX) there and called on the name of the Lord.(AY) There he pitched his tent, and there his servants dug a well.(AZ)
26 Meanwhile, Abimelek had come to him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his personal adviser and Phicol the commander of his forces.(BA) 27 Isaac asked them, “Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?(BB)”
28 They answered, “We saw clearly that the Lord was with you;(BC) so we said, ‘There ought to be a sworn agreement between us’—between us and you. Let us make a treaty(BD) with you 29 that you will do us no harm,(BE) just as we did not harm you but always treated you well and sent you away peacefully. And now you are blessed by the Lord.”(BF)
30 Isaac then made a feast(BG) for them, and they ate and drank. 31 Early the next morning the men swore an oath(BH) to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they went away peacefully.
32 That day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well(BI) they had dug. They said, “We’ve found water!” 33 He called it Shibah,[f] and to this day the name of the town has been Beersheba.[g](BJ)
Jacob Takes Esau’s Blessing
34 When Esau was forty years old,(BK) he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and also Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite.(BL) 35 They were a source of grief to Isaac and Rebekah.(BM)
