Matrimonio di Isacco
24 Abramo era ormai vecchio, avanti negli anni, e il Signore lo aveva benedetto in ogni cosa. 2 Allora Abramo disse al suo servo, il più anziano della sua casa, che aveva potere su tutti i suoi beni: «Metti la mano sotto la mia coscia 3 e ti farò giurare per il Signore, Dio del cielo e Dio della terra, che non prenderai per mio figlio una moglie tra le figlie dei Cananei, in mezzo ai quali abito, 4 ma che andrai al mio paese, nella mia patria, a scegliere una moglie per mio figlio Isacco». 5 Gli disse il servo: «Se la donna non mi vuol seguire in questo paese, dovrò forse ricondurre tuo figlio al paese da cui tu sei uscito?». 6 Gli rispose Abramo: «Guardati dal ricondurre là mio figlio! 7 Il Signore, Dio del cielo e Dio della terra, che mi ha tolto dalla casa di mio padre e dal mio paese natio, che mi ha parlato e mi ha giurato: Alla tua discendenza darò questo paese, egli stesso manderà il suo angelo davanti a te, perché tu possa prendere di là una moglie per il mio figlio. 8 Se la donna non vorrà seguirti, allora sarai libero dal giuramento a me fatto; ma non devi ricondurre là il mio figlio».
9 Allora il servo mise la mano sotto la coscia di Abramo, suo padrone, e gli prestò giuramento riguardo a questa cosa. 10 Il servo prese dieci cammelli del suo padrone e, portando ogni sorta di cose preziose del suo padrone, si mise in viaggio e andò nel Paese dei due fiumi, alla città di Nacor. 11 Fece inginocchiare i cammelli fuori della città, presso il pozzo d'acqua, nell'ora della sera, quando le donne escono ad attingere. 12 E disse: «Signore, Dio del mio padrone Abramo, concedimi un felice incontro quest'oggi e usa benevolenza verso il mio padrone Abramo! 13 Ecco, io sto presso la fonte dell'acqua, mentre le fanciulle della città escono per attingere acqua. 14 Ebbene, la ragazza alla quale dirò: Abbassa l'anfora e lasciami bere, e che risponderà: Bevi, anche ai tuoi cammelli darò da bere, sia quella che tu hai destinata al tuo servo Isacco; da questo riconoscerò che tu hai usato benevolenza al mio padrone». 15 Non aveva ancora finito di parlare, quand'ecco Rebecca, che era nata a Betuèl figlio di Milca, moglie di Nacor, fratello di Abramo, usciva con l'anfora sulla spalla. 16 La giovinetta era molto bella d'aspetto, era vergine, nessun uomo le si era unito. Essa scese alla sorgente, riempì l'anfora e risalì. 17 Il servo allora le corse incontro e disse: «Fammi bere un pò d'acqua dalla tua anfora». 18 Rispose: «Bevi, mio signore». In fretta calò l'anfora sul braccio e lo fece bere. 19 Come ebbe finito di dargli da bere, disse: «Anche per i tuoi cammelli ne attingerò, finché finiranno di bere». 20 In fretta vuotò l'anfora nell'abbeveratoio, corse di nuovo ad attingere al pozzo e attinse per tutti i cammelli di lui. 21 Intanto quell'uomo la contemplava in silenzio, in attesa di sapere se il Signore avesse o no concesso buon esito al suo viaggio. 22 Quando i cammelli ebbero finito di bere, quell'uomo prese un pendente d'oro del peso di mezzo siclo e glielo pose alle narici e le pose sulle braccia due braccialetti del peso di dieci sicli d'oro. 23 E disse: «Di chi sei figlia? Dimmelo. C'è posto per noi in casa di tuo padre, per passarvi la notte?». 24 Gli rispose: «Io sono figlia di Betuèl, il figlio che Milca partorì a Nacor». 25 E soggiunse: «C'è paglia e foraggio in quantità da noi e anche posto per passare la notte».
26 Quell'uomo si inginocchiò e si prostrò al Signore 27 e disse: «Sia benedetto il Signore, Dio del mio padrone Abramo, che non ha cessato di usare benevolenza e fedeltà verso il mio padrone. Quanto a me, il Signore mi ha guidato sulla via fino alla casa dei fratelli del mio padrone». 28 La giovinetta corse ad annunziare alla casa di sua madre tutte queste cose. 29 Ora Rebecca aveva un fratello chiamato Làbano e Làbano corse fuori da quell'uomo al pozzo. 30 Egli infatti, visti il pendente e i braccialetti alle braccia della sorella e udite queste parole di Rebecca, sua sorella: «Così mi ha parlato quell'uomo», venne da costui che ancora stava presso i cammelli vicino al pozzo. 31 Gli disse: «Vieni, benedetto dal Signore! Perché te ne stai fuori, mentre io ho preparato la casa e un posto per i cammelli?». 32 Allora l'uomo entrò in casa e quegli tolse il basto ai cammelli, fornì paglia e foraggio ai cammelli e acqua per lavare i piedi a lui e ai suoi uomini. 33 Quindi gli fu posto davanti da mangiare, ma egli disse; «Non mangerò, finché non avrò detto quello che devo dire». Gli risposero: «Dì pure». 34 E disse: «Io sono un servo di Abramo. 35 Il Signore ha benedetto molto il mio padrone, che è diventato potente: gli ha concesso greggi e armenti, argento e oro, schiavi e schiave, cammelli e asini. 36 Sara, la moglie del mio padrone, gli ha partorito un figlio, quando ormai era vecchio, al quale egli ha dato tutti i suoi beni. 37 E il mio padrone mi ha fatto giurare: Non devi prendere per mio figlio una moglie tra le figlie dei Cananei, in mezzo ai quali abito, 38 ma andrai alla casa di mio padre, alla mia famiglia, a prendere una moglie per mio figlio. 39 Io dissi al mio padrone: Forse la donna non mi seguirà. 40 Mi rispose: Il Signore, alla cui presenza io cammino, manderà con te il suo angelo e darà felice esito al tuo viaggio, così che tu possa prendere una moglie per il mio figlio dalla mia famiglia e dalla casa di mio padre. 41 Solo quando sarai andato alla mia famiglia, sarai esente dalla mia maledizione; se non volessero cedertela, sarai esente dalla mia maledizione. 42 Così oggi sono arrivato alla fonte e ho detto: Signore, Dio del mio padrone Abramo, se stai per dar buon esito al viaggio che sto compiendo, 43 ecco, io sto presso la fonte d'acqua; ebbene, la giovane che uscirà ad attingere, alla quale io dirò: Fammi bere un pò d'acqua dalla tua anfora, 44 e mi risponderà: Bevi tu; anche per i tuoi cammelli attingerò, quella sarà la moglie che il Signore ha destinata al figlio del mio padrone. 45 Io non avevo ancora finito di pensare, quand'ecco Rebecca uscire con l'anfora sulla spalla; scese alla fonte, attinse; io allora le dissi: Fammi bere. 46 Subito essa calò l'anfora e disse: Bevi; anche ai tuoi cammelli darò da bere. Così io bevvi ed essa diede da bere anche ai cammelli. 47 E io la interrogai: Di chi sei figlia? Rispose: Sono figlia di Betuèl, il figlio che Milca ha partorito a Nacor. Allora le posi il pendente alle narici e i braccialetti alle braccia. 48 Poi mi inginocchiai e mi prostrai al Signore e benedissi il Signore, Dio del mio padrone Abramo, il quale mi aveva guidato per la via giusta a prendere per suo figlio la figlia del fratello del mio padrone. 49 Ora, se intendete usare benevolenza e lealtà verso il mio padrone, fatemelo sapere; se no, fatemelo sapere ugualmente, perché io mi rivolga altrove».
50 Allora Làbano e Betuèl risposero: «Dal Signore la cosa procede, non possiamo dirti nulla. 51 Ecco Rebecca davanti a te: prendila e và e sia la moglie del figlio del tuo padrone, come ha parlato il Signore».
52 Quando il servo di Abramo udì le loro parole, si prostrò a terra davanti al Signore. 53 Poi il servo tirò fuori oggetti d'argento e oggetti d'oro e vesti e li diede a Rebecca; doni preziosi diede anche al fratello e alla madre di lei. 54 Poi mangiarono e bevvero lui e i suoi uomini e passarono la notte. Quando si alzarono alla mattina, egli disse: «Lasciatemi andare dal mio padrone». 55 Ma il fratello e la madre di lei dissero: «Rimanga la giovinetta con noi qualche tempo, una decina di giorni; dopo, te ne andrai». 56 Rispose loro: «Non trattenetemi, mentre il Signore ha concesso buon esito al mio viaggio. Lasciatemi partire per andare dal mio padrone!». 57 Dissero allora: «Chiamiamo la giovinetta e domandiamo a lei stessa». 58 Chiamarono dunque Rebecca e le dissero: «Vuoi partire con quest'uomo?». Essa rispose: «Andrò». 59 Allora essi lasciarono partire Rebecca con la nutrice, insieme con il servo di Abramo e i suoi uomini. 60 Benedissero Rebecca e le dissero:
«Tu, sorella nostra,
diventa migliaia di miriadi
e la tua stirpe conquisti
la porta dei suoi nemici!».
61 Così Rebecca e le sue ancelle si alzarono, montarono sui cammelli e seguirono quell'uomo. Il servo prese con sé Rebecca e partì. 62 Intanto Isacco rientrava dal pozzo di Lacai-Roi; abitava infatti nel territorio del Negheb. 63 Isacco uscì sul fare della sera per svagarsi in campagna e, alzando gli occhi, vide venire i cammelli. 64 Alzò gli occhi anche Rebecca, vide Isacco e scese subito dal cammello. 65 E disse al servo: «Chi è quell'uomo che viene attraverso la campagna incontro a noi?». Il servo rispose: «E' il mio padrone». Allora essa prese il velo e si coprì. 66 Il servo raccontò ad Isacco tutte le cose che aveva fatte. 67 Isacco introdusse Rebecca nella tenda che era stata di sua madre Sara; si prese in moglie Rebecca e l'amò. Isacco trovò conforto dopo la morte della madre.

24 (A)Or Abraamo era diventato vecchio, d’età avanzata, e il Signore lo aveva benedetto in ogni cosa.
2 Abraamo disse al più anziano dei servi di casa sua, che aveva il governo di tutti i suoi beni: «Metti la tua mano sotto la mia coscia 3 e io ti farò giurare per il Signore, il Dio dei cieli e il Dio della terra, che tu non prenderai per mio figlio una moglie tra le figlie dei Cananei in mezzo ai quali abito; 4 ma andrai al mio paese, dai miei parenti, e vi prenderai una moglie per mio figlio, per Isacco». 5 Il servo gli rispose: «Forse quella donna non vorrà seguirmi in questo paese; dovrò allora ricondurre tuo figlio nel paese dal quale tu sei uscito?» 6 Abraamo gli disse: «Guàrdati dal far tornare là mio figlio! 7 Il Signore, il Dio dei cieli, che mi fece uscire dalla casa di mio padre e dal mio paese natale – e mi parlò e mi giurò dicendo: “Io darò alla tua discendenza questo paese” –, egli stesso manderà il suo angelo davanti a te e tu prenderai di là una moglie per mio figlio. 8 Se la donna non vorrà seguirti, allora sarai sciolto da questo giuramento che ti faccio fare; soltanto, non ricondurre là mio figlio». 9 E il servo pose la mano sotto la coscia di Abraamo, suo signore, e gli giurò di fare queste cose.
10 Poi il servo prese dieci cammelli, tra i cammelli del suo signore, e partì, avendo a sua disposizione tutti i beni del suo signore; e, messosi in viaggio, giunse in Mesopotamia, alla città di Naor[a]. 11 Dopo aver fatto riposare sulle ginocchia i cammelli fuori della città presso un pozzo d’acqua, verso sera, all’ora in cui le donne escono ad attingere acqua, disse: 12 «O Signore, Dio del mio signore Abraamo, ti prego, fammi fare quest’oggi un felice incontro; usa bontà verso Abraamo mio signore! 13 Ecco, io sto qui presso questa sorgente; e le figlie degli abitanti della città usciranno ad attingere acqua. 14 Fa’ che la fanciulla alla quale dirò: “Abbassa, ti prego, la tua brocca perché io beva”, e che mi risponderà: “Bevi, e darò da bere anche ai tuoi cammelli”, sia quella che tu hai destinata al tuo servo Isacco. Da questo comprenderò che tu hai usato bontà verso il mio signore».
15 Non aveva ancora finito di parlare, quand’ecco uscire, con la sua brocca sulla spalla, Rebecca, figlia di Betuel figlio di Milca, moglie di Naor fratello di Abraamo. 16 La fanciulla era molto bella d’aspetto, vergine; nessun uomo l’aveva conosciuta. Lei scese alla sorgente, riempì la brocca e risalì. 17 Il servo le corse incontro e le disse: «Ti prego, fammi bere un po’ d’acqua della tua brocca». 18 Lei rispose: «Bevi, mio signore»; e s’affrettò a calare la brocca sulla mano e gli diede da bere. 19 Quand’ebbe finito di dargli da bere, disse: «Io ne attingerò anche per i tuoi cammelli finché abbiano bevuto a sufficienza». 20 E presto vuotò la sua brocca nell’abbeveratoio, corse di nuovo al pozzo ad attingere acqua e ne attinse per tutti i cammelli di lui.
21 Quell’uomo la contemplava in silenzio, per sapere se il Signore avesse o no dato successo al suo viaggio. 22 Quando i cammelli ebbero finito di bere, l’uomo prese un anello d’oro del peso di mezzo siclo, e due braccialetti del peso di dieci sicli d’oro, per i polsi di lei, e disse: 23 «Di chi sei figlia? Dimmelo, ti prego. V’è posto in casa di tuo padre per alloggiarci?» 24 Rispose a lui: «Sono figlia di Betuel, figlio di Milca, che lei partorì a Naor». 25 E aggiunse: «C’è da noi paglia e foraggio in abbondanza e anche posto da alloggiare». 26 Allora l’uomo s’inchinò, adorò il Signore, e disse: 27 «Benedetto sia il Signore, il Dio di Abraamo mio signore, che non ha cessato di essere buono e fedele verso il mio signore! Quanto a me, il Signore mi ha messo sulla via della casa dei fratelli del mio signore».
28 E la fanciulla corse a raccontare queste cose a casa di sua madre.
29 Rebecca aveva un fratello chiamato Labano. Labano corse fuori da quell’uomo alla sorgente. 30 Com’ebbe veduto l’anello e i braccialetti ai polsi di sua sorella ed ebbe udito le parole di Rebecca sua sorella che diceva: «Quell’uomo mi ha parlato così», andò da quell’uomo, che se ne stava presso ai cammelli, vicino alla sorgente, 31 e disse: «Entra, benedetto dal Signore! Perché stai fuori? Io ho preparato la casa e un luogo per i cammelli». 32 L’uomo entrò in casa e Labano scaricò i cammelli, diede paglia e foraggio ai cammelli e portò acqua per lavare i piedi a lui e a quelli che erano con lui. 33 Poi gli fu posto davanti da mangiare, ma egli disse: «Non mangerò finché non abbia fatto la mia ambasciata». E l’altro disse: «Parla».
34 Egli disse: «Io sono servo di Abraamo. 35 Il Signore ha benedetto abbondantemente il mio signore, che è diventato ricco; gli ha dato pecore e buoi, argento e oro, servi e serve, cammelli e asini. 36 Or Sara, moglie del mio signore, ha partorito nella sua vecchiaia un figlio al mio padrone, il quale gli ha dato tutto quello che possiede. 37 Il mio signore mi ha fatto giurare, dicendo: “Non prenderai per mio figlio una moglie tra le figlie dei Cananei, nel paese dei quali abito; 38 ma andrai alla casa di mio padre, alla mia famiglia, a prendervi una moglie per mio figlio”. 39 E io dissi al mio padrone: “Forse quella donna non vorrà seguirmi”. 40 Egli rispose: “Il Signore, davanti al quale ho camminato, manderà con te il suo angelo e darà successo al tuo viaggio; così tu potrai prendere per mio figlio una moglie dalla mia famiglia e dalla casa di mio padre. 41 Sarai sciolto dal giuramento che ti faccio fare solo quando sarai andato alla mia famiglia; e, se non vorranno dartela, allora sarai sciolto dal giuramento che mi fai”. 42 Oggi sono arrivato alla sorgente e ho detto: “Signore, Dio del mio signore Abraamo, se gradisci dar successo al viaggio che ho intrapreso, 43 ecco, io mi fermo presso questa sorgente; fa’ che la fanciulla che uscirà ad attingere acqua, alla quale dirò: ‘Ti prego, dammi da bere un po’ d’acqua della tua brocca’, 44 e che mi dirà: ‘Bevi pure, e ne attingerò anche per i tuoi cammelli’, sia la moglie che il Signore ha destinata al figlio del mio signore”. 45 E, prima che avessi finito di parlare in cuor mio, ecco uscire Rebecca con la sua brocca sulla spalla, scendere alla sorgente e attingere l’acqua. Allora io le ho detto: 46 “Ti prego, fammi bere!” Ed ella si è affrettata a calare la brocca dalla spalla e mi ha risposto: “Bevi! E darò da bere anche ai tuoi cammelli”. Così ho bevuto io, e lei ha abbeverato anche i cammelli. 47 Poi l’ho interrogata e le ho detto: “Di chi sei figlia?” Lei ha risposto: “Son figlia di Betuel, il figlio che Milca partorì a Naor”. Allora io le ho messo l’anello al naso e i braccialetti ai polsi. 48 Mi sono inchinato, ho adorato il Signore e ho benedetto il Signore, il Dio di Abraamo mio signore, che mi ha guidato sulla giusta via a prendere per suo figlio la figlia del fratello del mio signore. 49 Ora, se volete usare bontà e fedeltà verso il mio signore, ditemelo; e se no, ditemelo lo stesso, e io mi volgerò a destra o a sinistra».
50 Allora Labano e Betuel risposero: «La cosa procede dal Signore; noi non possiamo dirti né male né bene. 51 Ecco, Rebecca ti sta davanti: prendila, va’, e sia moglie del figlio del tuo signore, come il Signore ha detto». 52 Quando il servo di Abraamo udì le loro parole, si prostrò a terra davanti al Signore. 53 Poi il servo tirò fuori oggetti d’argento, oggetti d’oro, vesti e li diede a Rebecca; donò anche delle cose preziose al fratello e alla madre di lei. 54 Poi mangiarono e bevvero, egli e gli uomini che erano con lui, e passarono lì la notte. La mattina, quando si furono alzati, il servo disse: «Lasciatemi tornare dal mio signore». 55 E il fratello e la madre di Rebecca dissero: «Rimanga la fanciulla ancora alcuni giorni con noi, almeno una decina; poi se ne andrà». 56 Ma egli rispose loro: «Non mi trattenete, giacché il Signore ha dato successo al mio viaggio; lasciatemi partire, perché io me ne torni dal mio signore». 57 Allora dissero: «Chiamiamo la fanciulla e sentiamo lei stessa». 58 Chiamarono Rebecca e le dissero: «Vuoi andare con quest’uomo?» Ed ella rispose: «Sì, andrò». 59 Così lasciarono andare Rebecca, loro sorella, e la sua nutrice con il servo di Abraamo e la sua gente. 60 Benedissero Rebecca e le dissero: «Sorella nostra, possa tu divenire migliaia di miriadi e possa la tua discendenza impadronirsi delle città dei suoi nemici!» 61 Rebecca si levò con le sue serve, montarono sui cammelli e seguirono quell’uomo. Il servo prese Rebecca e se ne andò.
62 Isacco era tornato dal pozzo di Lacai-Roi[b] e abitava nella regione meridionale. 63 Isacco era uscito, sul far della sera, per meditare nella campagna; e, alzando gli occhi, guardò e vide venire dei cammelli. 64 Anche Rebecca alzò gli occhi, vide Isacco, saltò giù dal cammello, 65 e disse al servo: «Chi è quell’uomo che viene per la campagna incontro a noi?» Il servo rispose: «È il mio signore». Ed ella, preso il velo, si coprì. 66 Il servo raccontò a Isacco tutto quello che aveva fatto. 67 E Isacco condusse Rebecca nella tenda di Sara sua madre, la prese, ed ella divenne sua moglie, ed egli l’amò. Così Isacco fu consolato dopo la morte di sua madre.

1 Now Abraham was old, and [a]stricken in years, and the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things.
2 Therefore Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, which had the rule over all that he had, (A)[b]Put now thine hand under my thigh,
3 And I will make thee [c]swear by the Lord God of the heaven, and God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I dwell:
4 But thou shalt go unto my [d]country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac.
5 And the servant said to him, What if the woman will not come with me to this land? shall I bring thy son again unto the land from whence thou camest?
6 To whom Abraham answered, Beware that thou bring not my son [e]thither again.
7 ¶ The Lord God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house, and from the land where I was born, and that spake unto me, and that swear unto me, saying, (B)Unto thy seed will I give this land, he shall send his Angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from thence.
8 Nevertheless if the woman will not follow thee, then shalt thou be [f]discharged of this mine oath: only bring not my son thither again.
9 Then the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and sware to him for this matter.
10 ¶ So the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master, and departed: (for he had all his master’s goods in his hand:) and so he arose, and went to [g]Aram Naharaim, unto the [h]city of Nahor.
11 And he made his camels to [i]lie down without the city by a well of water, at eventide about the time that the women come out to draw water.
12 And he said, O [j]Lord God of my master Abraham, I beseech thee, [k]send me good speed this day, and show mercy unto my master Abraham.
13 Lo, I stand by the well of water while the men’s daughters of this city come out to draw water.
14 [l]Grant therefore that the maid, to whom I say: Bow down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink: if she say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: may be she that thou hast ordained for thy servant Isaac: and thereby shall I know that thou hast showed mercy on my master.
15 ¶ And now yet he had left speaking, behold, [m]Rebekah came out, the daughter of Bethuel, son of Milcah the wife of Nahor Abraham’s brother, and her Pitcher upon her shoulder.
16 (And the maid was very fair to look upon, a virgin and unknown of man) and she [n]went down to the well, and filled her pitcher and came up.
17 Then the servant ran to meet her, and said, Let me drink, I pray thee, a little water of thy pitcher.
18 And she said, Drink [o]sir: and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand and gave him drink.
19 And when she had given him drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also until they [p]have drunken enough.
20 And she poured out her pitcher into the trough speedily, and ran again unto the well to draw water, and she drew for all his camels.
21 So the man wondered at her, and held his peace, to know whether the Lord had made his journey prosperous or not.
22 And when the camels had left drinking, the man took a golden [q][r]abillement of [s]half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands, of ten shekels weight of gold:
23 And he said, Whose daughter art thou? tell me, I pray thee, Is there room in thy father’s house for us to lodge in?
24 Then she said to him, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah whom she bare unto Nahor.
25 Moreover she said unto him, We have litter also and provender enough, and room to lodge in.
26 And the man bowed himself and worshipped the Lord,
27 And said, Blessed be the Lord God of my master Abraham, which hath not withdrawn his mercy [t]and his truth from my master: for when I was in the way, the Lord brought me to my master’s brethren’s house.
28 And the maid ran and told them of her mother’s house according to these words.
29 ¶ Now Rebekah had a brother called Laban, and Laban ran unto the man to the well.
30 For when he had seen the earrings and bracelets in his sister’s hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, Thus said the man unto me, then he went to the man, and lo, [u]he stood by the camels at the well.
31 And he said, Come in thou blessed of the Lord: wherefore standest thou without, seeing I have prepared the house, and room for the camels?
32 ¶ Then the man came into the house, and [v]he unsaddled the [w]camels, and brought litter and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet, and the men’s feet that were with him.
33 Afterward the meat was set before him: but he said, I [x]will not eat, until I have said my message. And he said: Speak on.
34 Then he said, I am Abraham’s servant,
35 And the Lord hath [y]blessed my master wonderfully, that he is become great: for he hath given him sheep, and beeves, and silver, and gold, and men servants, and maid servants, and camels, and asses.
36 And Sarah my master’s wife hath borne a son to my master, when she was old, and unto him hath he given all that he hath.
37 Now my master made me swear, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the [z]Canaanites, in whose land I dwell:
38 But thou shalt go unto my [aa]father’s house and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son.
39 Then I said unto my master, What if the woman will not follow me?
40 Who answered me, The Lord, before who I walk, will send his Angel with thee, and prosper thy journey, and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my kindred and my father’s house.
41 Then shalt thou be discharged of [ab]mine oath, when thou comest to my kindred: and if they give thee not one, thou shalt be free from mine oath.
42 So I came this day to the well, and said, O Lord, the God of my master Abraham, if thou now prosper my [ac]journey which I go,
43 Behold, (C)I stand by the well of water when a virgin cometh forth to draw water, and I say to her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water of thy pitcher to drink,
44 And she said to me, Drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels, let her be the wife, which the Lord hath [ad]prepared for thy master’s son.
45 And before I had made an end of speaking in mine [ae]heart, behold, Rebekah came forth and her pitcher on her shoulder, and she went down to the well, and drew water. Then I said unto her, Give me drink, I pray thee.
46 And she made haste, and took down her pitcher from her shoulder, and said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also. So I drank, and she gave the camels drink also.
47 Then I asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou? And she answered, The daughter of Bethuel Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bare unto him. Then I put the abillement upon her face, and the bracelets upon her hands:
48 [af]And I bowed down and worshipped the Lord, and blessed the Lord God of my master Abraham, which had brought me the [ag]right way to take my master’s brother’s daughter unto his son.
49 Now therefore, if ye will deal [ah]mercifully and truly with my master, tell me: and if not, tell me, that I may turn me to the [ai]right hand or to the left.
50 Then answered Laban and Bethuel, and said, [aj]This thing is proceeded of the Lord: we cannot therefore say unto thee, neither evil nor good.
51 Behold, Rebekah is [ak]before thee, take her and go, that she may be thy master’s son’s wife, even as the Lord hath [al]said.
52 And when Abraham’s servant heard their words, he bowed himself toward the earth unto the Lord.
53 Then the servant took forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave to Rebekah: also unto her brother and to her mother he gave gifts.
54 Afterward they did eat and drink, both he, and the men that were with him, and tarried all night, and when they rose up in the morning, he said, (D)Let me depart unto my master.
55 Then her brother and her mother answered, Let the maid abide with us, at the least [am]ten days: then shall she go.
56 But he said unto them, Hinder you me not, seeing the Lord hath prospered my journey: send me away, that I may go to my master.
57 Then they said, We will call the maid, and ask [an]her consent.
58 And they called Rebekah, and said unto her: Wilt thou go with this man? And [ao]she answered, I will go.
59 So they let Rebekah their sister go, and her nurse, with Abraham’s servant and his men.
60 And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Thou art our sister, grow into thousand thousand’s, and thy seed possess the [ap]gate of his enemies.
61 ¶ Then Rebekah arose, and her maids, and rode upon the camels, and followed the man, and the servant took Rebekah and departed.
62 Now Isaac came from the way of (E)Beer Lahai Roi, (for he dwelt in the South country.)
63 And Isaac went out to [aq]pray in the field toward the evening: who lift up his eyes and looked, and behold, the camels came.
64 Also Rebekah lift up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted down from the camel.
65 (For she had said to the servant, Who is yonder man, that cometh in the field to meet us? and the servant had said, It is my master) So she took [ar]a veil, and covered her.
66 And the servant told Isaac all things, that he had done.
67 Afterward Isaac brought her into the tent, of Sarah his mother, and he took Rebekah, and she was his wife, and he loved her: So Isaac was [as]comforted after his mother’s death.
