2 (A)Così furono compiuti i cieli e la terra e tutto l’esercito loro. 2 Il settimo giorno Dio compì l’opera che aveva fatta, e si riposò il settimo giorno da tutta l’opera che aveva fatta[a]. 3 Dio benedisse il settimo giorno e lo santificò, perché in esso Dio si riposò da tutta l’opera che aveva creata e fatta.

4 (B)Queste sono le origini dei cieli e della terra quando furono creati. Nel giorno che Dio il Signore fece la terra e i cieli, 5 non c’era ancora sulla terra alcun arbusto della campagna. Nessuna erba della campagna era ancora spuntata, perché Dio il Signore non aveva fatto piovere sulla terra, e non c’era alcun uomo per coltivare il suolo; 6 ma un vapore saliva dalla terra e bagnava tutta la superficie del suolo.

7 Dio il Signore formò l’uomo[b] dalla polvere della terra, gli soffiò nelle narici un alito vitale e l’uomo divenne un’anima vivente[c].

8 (C)Dio il Signore piantò un giardino in Eden[d], a oriente, e vi pose l’uomo che aveva formato. 9 Dio il Signore fece spuntare dal suolo ogni sorta di alberi piacevoli a vedersi e buoni per nutrirsi, tra i quali l’albero della vita in mezzo al giardino e l’albero della conoscenza del bene e del male. 10 Un fiume usciva da Eden per irrigare il giardino, e di là si divideva in quattro bracci. 11 Il nome del primo è Pison, ed è quello che circonda tutto il paese di Avila, dove c’è l’oro; 12 e l’oro di quel paese è puro; qui si trovano pure il bdellio[e] e l’ònice. 13 Il nome del secondo fiume è Ghion, ed è quello che circonda tutto il paese di Cus[f]. 14 Il nome del terzo fiume è Chiddechel[g], ed è quello che scorre a oriente dell’Assiria. Il quarto fiume è l’Eufrate.

15 Dio il Signore prese dunque l’uomo e lo pose nel giardino di Eden perché lo lavorasse e lo custodisse. 16 Dio il Signore ordinò all’uomo: «Mangia pure da ogni albero del giardino, 17 ma dell’albero della conoscenza del bene e del male non ne mangiare; perché nel giorno che tu ne mangerai, certamente morirai».

18 (D)Poi Dio il Signore disse: «Non è bene che l’uomo sia solo; io gli farò un aiuto che sia adatto a lui». 19 Dio il Signore, avendo formato dalla terra tutti gli animali dei campi e tutti gli uccelli del cielo, li condusse all’uomo per vedere come li avrebbe chiamati, e perché ogni essere vivente portasse il nome che l’uomo gli avrebbe dato. 20 L’uomo diede dei nomi a tutto il bestiame, agli uccelli del cielo e ad ogni animale dei campi; ma per l’uomo non si trovò un aiuto che fosse adatto a lui. 21 Allora Dio il Signore fece cadere un profondo sonno sull’uomo, che si addormentò; prese una delle costole di lui e richiuse la carne al posto d’essa. 22 Dio il Signore, con la costola che aveva tolta all’uomo, formò una donna e la condusse all’uomo. 23 L’uomo disse: «Questa, finalmente, è ossa delle mie ossa e carne della mia carne. Ella sarà chiamata donna[h] perché è stata tratta dall’uomo[i]». 24 Perciò l’uomo lascerà suo padre e sua madre e si unirà a sua moglie, e saranno una stessa carne[j].

25 L’uomo e sua moglie erano entrambi nudi e non ne avevano vergogna.

The Seventh Day, God Rests

2 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and (A)all the host of them. 2 And (B)on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. 3 So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.

The Creation of Man and Woman

4 (C)These are the generations
of the heavens and the earth when they were created,
in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

5 When no (D)bush of the field[a] was yet in the land[b] and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man (E)to work the ground, 6 and a mist[c] was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground— 7 then the Lord God formed the man of (F)dust from the ground and (G)breathed into his (H)nostrils the breath of life, and (I)the man became a living creature. 8 And the Lord God planted a (J)garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9 And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. (K)The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, (L)and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

10 A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became four rivers. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of (M)Havilah, where there is gold. 12 And the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there. 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Cush. 14 And the name of the third river is the (N)Tigris, which flows east of Assyria.[d] And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

15 The Lord God took the man (O)and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (P)you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat[e] of it you (Q)shall surely die.”

18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; (R)I will make him a helper fit for[f] him.” 19 (S)Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed[g] every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and (T)brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam[h] there was not found a helper fit for him. 21 So the Lord God caused a (U)deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made[i] into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said,

“This at last is (V)bone of my bones
    and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman,
    because she was (W)taken out of Man.”[j]

24 (X)Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

2 The heavens, the earth, and all their vast array were finished. 2 On the seventh day God finished his work which he had done; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done. 3 God blessed the seventh day, and made it holy, because he rested in it from all his work of creation which he had done.

4 This is the history of the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that Yahweh[a] God made the earth and the heavens. 5 No plant of the field was yet in the earth, and no herb of the field had yet sprung up; for Yahweh God had not caused it to rain on the earth. There was not a man to till the ground, 6 but a mist went up from the earth, and watered the whole surface of the ground. 7 Yahweh God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. 8 Yahweh God planted a garden eastward, in Eden, and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9 Out of the ground Yahweh God made every tree to grow that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food, including the tree of life in the middle of the garden and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 10 A river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it was parted, and became the source of four rivers. 11 The name of the first is Pishon: it flows through the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; 12 and the gold of that land is good. Bdellium[b] and onyx stone are also there. 13 The name of the second river is Gihon. It is the same river that flows through the whole land of Cush. 14 The name of the third river is Hiddekel. This is the one which flows in front of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates. 15 Yahweh God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it. 16 Yahweh God commanded the man, saying, “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; 17 but you shall not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.”

18 Yahweh God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make him a helper comparable to[c] him.” 19 Out of the ground Yahweh God formed every animal of the field, and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. Whatever the man called every living creature became its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock, and to the birds of the sky, and to every animal of the field; but for man there was not found a helper comparable to him. 21 Yahweh God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. As the man slept, he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 Yahweh God made a woman from the rib which he had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. 23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh. She will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken out of Man.” 24 Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh. 25 The man and his wife were both naked, and they were not ashamed.

2 Así fueron acabados los cielos y la tierra y todas sus huestes(A). 2 En el séptimo día ya Dios había completado la[a] obra que había estado haciendo(B), y reposó en el día séptimo de toda la[b] obra que había hecho(C). 3 Dios bendijo el séptimo día y lo santificó, porque en él reposó de toda la[c] obra que Él había creado y hecho[d].

El huerto del Edén

4 Estos son los orígenes[e] de los cielos y de la tierra cuando fueron creados(D), el día en que el Señor Dios hizo la tierra y los cielos(E). 5 Aún no había ningún arbusto del campo en la tierra, ni había aún brotado ninguna planta[f] del campo(F), porque el Señor Dios no había enviado lluvia sobre la tierra(G), ni había hombre para labrar[g] la tierra. 6 Pero se levantaba de la tierra un vapor[h] que regaba toda la superficie[i] del suelo.

7 Entonces el Señor Dios formó al hombre del polvo de la tierra(H), y sopló en su nariz el aliento de vida, y fue el hombre un ser[j] viviente(I). 8 Y el Señor Dios plantó un huerto hacia el oriente, en Edén(J), y puso allí al hombre que había formado. 9 El Señor Dios hizo brotar de la tierra todo árbol agradable a la vista y bueno para comer(K). Asimismo, en medio del huerto, hizo brotar el árbol de la vida y el árbol del conocimiento[k] del bien y del mal(L).

10 Del Edén salía un río(M) para regar el huerto, y de allí se dividía y se convertía en otros cuatro ríos[l]. 11 El nombre del primero es Pisón. Este es el que rodea toda la tierra de Havila(N), donde hay oro. 12 El oro de aquella tierra es bueno; allí hay bedelio y ónice. 13 El nombre del segundo río es Gihón. Este es el que rodea la tierra de Cus. 14 El nombre del tercer río es Tigris[m](O). Este es el que corre[n] al oriente de Asiria. Y el cuarto río es el Éufrates[o](P).

15 El Señor Dios tomó al hombre y lo puso en el huerto del Edén para que lo cultivara y lo cuidara. 16 Y el Señor Dios ordenó al hombre: «De todo árbol del huerto podrás comer(Q), 17 pero del árbol del conocimiento[p] del bien y del mal no comerás[q], porque el día que de él comas, ciertamente morirás(R)».

Formación de la mujer

18 Entonces el Señor Dios dijo: «No es bueno que el hombre esté solo; le haré una ayuda adecuada[r](S)». 19 Y el Señor Dios formó de la tierra todo animal del campo y toda ave del cielo(T), y los trajo al hombre(U) para ver cómo los llamaría. Como el hombre llamó a cada ser viviente, ese fue su nombre. 20 El hombre puso nombre a todo ganado y a las aves del cielo y a todo animal del campo, pero para Adán[s] no se encontró una ayuda que fuera adecuada para él[t](V). 21 Entonces el Señor Dios hizo caer un sueño profundo(W) sobre el hombre, y este se durmió. Y Dios tomó una de sus costillas, y cerró la carne en ese lugar. 22 De la costilla que el Señor Dios había tomado del hombre(X), formó[u] una mujer y la trajo al hombre. 23 Y el hombre dijo:

«Esta es ahora hueso de mis huesos,
Y carne de mi carne(Y).
Ella[v] será llamada mujer[w],
Porque del hombre[x] fue tomada».

24 Por tanto el hombre dejará a su padre y a su madre y se unirá a su mujer, y serán una sola carne(Z). 25 Ambos estaban desnudos, el hombre y su mujer, pero no se avergonzaban(AA).

5 Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth[a] and no plant had yet sprung up,(I) for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth(J) and there was no one to work the ground, 6 but streams[b] came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. 7 Then the Lord God formed(K) a man[c](L) from the dust(M) of the ground(N) and breathed into his nostrils the breath(O) of life,(P) and the man became a living being.(Q)

8 Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden;(R) and there he put the man he had formed. 9 The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees(S) that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life(T) and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.(U)

10 A river(V) watering the garden flowed from Eden;(W) from there it was separated into four headwaters. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah,(X) where there is gold. 12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin[d](Y) and onyx are also there.) 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush.[e] 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris;(Z) it runs along the east side of Ashur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.(AA)

15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden(AB) to work it and take care of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;(AC) 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,(AD) for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”(AE)

18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”(AF)

19 Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals(AG) and all the birds in the sky.(AH) He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called(AI) each living creature,(AJ) that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.

But for Adam[f] no suitable helper(AK) was found. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep;(AL) and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs[g] and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib[h](AM) he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

23 The man said,

“This is now bone of my bones
    and flesh of my flesh;(AN)
she shall be called(AO) ‘woman,’
    for she was taken out of man.(AP)”

24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united(AQ) to his wife, and they become one flesh.(AR)

25 Adam and his wife were both naked,(AS) and they felt no shame.
