18 (A)Il Signore apparve ad Abraamo alle querce di Mamre, mentre egli sedeva all’ingresso della sua tenda nell’ora più calda del giorno. 2 Abraamo alzò gli occhi e vide che tre uomini stavano davanti a lui. Come li ebbe visti, corse loro incontro dall’ingresso della tenda, si prostrò fino a terra e disse: 3 «Ti prego, mio Signore, se ho trovato grazia ai tuoi occhi, non passar oltre senza fermarti dal tuo servo! 4 Lasciate che si porti un po’ d’acqua, lavatevi i piedi e riposatevi sotto quest’albero. 5 Io andrò a prendere del pane e vi ristorerete; poi continuerete il vostro cammino; poiché è per questo che siete passati dal vostro servo». Quelli dissero: «Fa’ pure come hai detto». 6 Allora Abraamo andò in fretta nella tenda da Sara e le disse: «Prendi subito tre misure di fior di farina, impastala e fa’ delle focacce». 7 Poi Abraamo corse alla mandria, prese un vitello tenero e buono e lo diede a un suo servo, il quale si affrettò a prepararlo. 8 Prese del burro, del latte e il vitello che era stato preparato, e li pose davanti a loro. Egli se ne stette in piedi presso di loro, sotto l’albero, e quelli mangiarono.
9 Poi essi gli dissero: «Dov’è Sara, tua moglie?» Ed egli rispose: «È là nella tenda». 10 E l’altro: «Tornerò certamente da te fra un anno; allora Sara, tua moglie, avrà un figlio[a]». Sara intanto stava ad ascoltare all’ingresso della tenda, che era dietro di lui.
11 Abraamo e Sara erano vecchi, ben avanti negli anni, e Sara non aveva più i corsi ordinari delle donne. 12 Sara rise dentro di sé, dicendo: «Vecchia come sono, dovrei avere tali piaceri? Anche il mio signore è vecchio!» 13 Il Signore disse ad Abraamo: «Perché mai ha riso Sara, dicendo: “Partorirei io per davvero, vecchia come sono?” 14 Vi è forse qualcosa che sia troppo difficile per il Signore? Al tempo fissato, l’anno prossimo, tornerò e Sara avrà un figlio». 15 Allora Sara negò, dicendo: «Non ho riso»; perché ebbe paura. Ma egli disse: «Invece hai riso!»
Intercessione di Abraamo in favore di Sodoma
16 (B)Poi quegli uomini si alzarono e volsero gli sguardi verso Sodoma; e Abraamo andò con loro per congedarli.
17 Il Signore disse: «Dovrei forse nascondere ad Abraamo quanto sto per fare, 18 dato che Abraamo deve diventare una nazione grande e potente e in lui saranno benedette tutte le nazioni della terra? 19 Infatti, io l’ho prescelto perché ordini ai suoi figli, e alla sua casa dopo di lui, che seguano la via del Signore per praticare la giustizia e il diritto, affinché il Signore compia in favore di Abraamo quello che gli ha promesso». 20 Il Signore disse: «Siccome il grido che sale da Sodoma e Gomorra è grande e siccome il loro peccato è molto grave, 21 io scenderò e vedrò se hanno veramente agito secondo il grido che è giunto fino a me; e, se così non è, lo saprò».
22 Quegli uomini partirono di là e si avviarono verso Sodoma; ma Abraamo rimase ancora davanti al Signore. 23 Abraamo gli si avvicinò e disse: «Farai dunque perire il giusto insieme con l’empio? 24 Forse ci sono cinquanta giusti nella città; davvero farai perire anche quelli? Non perdonerai a quel luogo per amore dei cinquanta giusti che vi sono? 25 Non sia mai che tu faccia una cosa simile! Far morire il giusto con l’empio, in modo che il giusto sia trattato come l’empio! Non sia mai! Il giudice di tutta la terra non farà forse giustizia?» 26 Il Signore disse: «Se trovo nella città di Sodoma cinquanta giusti, perdonerò a tutto il luogo per amor di loro».
27 Abraamo riprese e disse: «Ecco, prendo l’ardire di parlare al Signore, benché io non sia che polvere e cenere. 28 Forse, a quei cinquanta giusti ne mancheranno cinque; distruggerai tutta la città per cinque di meno?» E il Signore: «Se ve ne trovo quarantacinque, non la distruggerò».
29 Abraamo continuò a parlargli e disse: «Forse se ne troveranno quaranta». E il Signore: «Non lo farò, per amore dei quaranta».
30 Abraamo disse: «Non si adiri il Signore e io parlerò. Forse se ne troveranno trenta». E il Signore: «Non lo farò, se ne trovo trenta».
31 Abraamo disse: «Ecco, prendo l’ardire di parlare al Signore. Forse se ne troveranno venti». E il Signore: «Non la distruggerò per amore di venti».
32 Abraamo disse: «Non si adiri il Signore, e io parlerò ancora questa volta soltanto. Forse se ne troveranno dieci». E il Signore: «Non la distruggerò per amore dei dieci».
33 Quando il Signore ebbe finito di parlare ad Abraamo, se ne andò. E Abraamo ritornò alla sua abitazione.

L'apparizione di Mamre
18 Poi il Signore apparve a lui alle Querce di Mamre, mentre egli sedeva all'ingresso della tenda nell'ora più calda del giorno. 2 Egli alzò gli occhi e vide che tre uomini stavano in piedi presso di lui. Appena li vide, corse loro incontro dall'ingresso della tenda e si prostrò fino a terra, 3 dicendo: «Mio signore, se ho trovato grazia ai tuoi occhi, non passar oltre senza fermarti dal tuo servo. 4 Si vada a prendere un pò di acqua, lavatevi i piedi e accomodatevi sotto l'albero. 5 Permettete che vada a prendere un boccone di pane e rinfrancatevi il cuore; dopo, potrete proseguire, perché è ben per questo che voi siete passati dal vostro servo». Quelli dissero: «Fà pure come hai detto». 6 Allora Abramo andò in fretta nella tenda, da Sara, e disse: «Presto, tre staia di fior di farina, impastala e fanne focacce». 7 All'armento corse lui stesso, Abramo, prese un vitello tenero e buono e lo diede al servo, che si affrettò a prepararlo. 8 Prese latte acido e latte fresco insieme con il vitello, che aveva preparato, e li porse a loro. Così, mentr'egli stava in piedi presso di loro sotto l'albero, quelli mangiarono.
9 Poi gli dissero: «Dov'è Sara, tua moglie?». Rispose: «E' là nella tenda». 10 Il Signore riprese: «Tornerò da te fra un anno a questa data e allora Sara, tua moglie, avrà un figlio». Intanto Sara stava ad ascoltare all'ingresso della tenda ed era dietro di lui. 11 Abramo e Sara erano vecchi, avanti negli anni; era cessato a Sara ciò che avviene regolarmente alle donne. 12 Allora Sara rise dentro di sé e disse: «Avvizzita come sono dovrei provare il piacere, mentre il mio signore è vecchio!». 13 Ma il Signore disse ad Abramo: «Perché Sara ha riso dicendo: Potrò davvero partorire, mentre sono vecchia? 14 C'è forse qualche cosa impossibile per il Signore? Al tempo fissato tornerò da te alla stessa data e Sara avrà un figlio». 15 Allora Sara negò: «Non ho riso!», perché aveva paura; ma quegli disse: «Sì, hai proprio riso».
L'intercessione di Abramo
16 Quegli uomini si alzarono e andarono a contemplare Sòdoma dall'alto, mentre Abramo li accompagnava per congedarli. 17 Il Signore diceva: «Devo io tener nascosto ad Abramo quello che sto per fare, 18 mentre Abramo dovrà diventare una nazione grande e potente e in lui si diranno benedette tutte le nazioni della terra? 19 Infatti io l'ho scelto, perché egli obblighi i suoi figli e la sua famiglia dopo di lui ad osservare la via del Signore e ad agire con giustizia e diritto, perché il Signore realizzi per Abramo quanto gli ha promesso». 20 Disse allora il Signore: «Il grido contro Sòdoma e Gomorra è troppo grande e il loro peccato è molto grave. 21 Voglio scendere a vedere se proprio hanno fatto tutto il male di cui è giunto il grido fino a me; lo voglio sapere!».
22 Quegli uomini partirono di lì e andarono verso Sòdoma, mentre Abramo stava ancora davanti al Signore. 23 Allora Abramo gli si avvicinò e gli disse: «Davvero sterminerai il giusto con l'empio? 24 Forse vi sono cinquanta giusti nella città: davvero li vuoi sopprimere? E non perdonerai a quel luogo per riguardo ai cinquanta giusti che vi si trovano? 25 Lungi da te il far morire il giusto con l'empio, così che il giusto sia trattato come l'empio; lungi da te! Forse il giudice di tutta la terra non praticherà la giustizia?». 26 Rispose il Signore: «Se a Sòdoma troverò cinquanta giusti nell'ambito della città, per riguardo a loro perdonerò a tutta la città».
27 Abramo riprese e disse: «Vedi come ardisco parlare al mio Signore, io che sono polvere e cenere... 28 Forse ai cinquanta giusti ne mancheranno cinque; per questi cinque distruggerai tutta la città?». Rispose: «Non la distruggerò, se ve ne trovo quarantacinque». 29 Abramo riprese ancora a parlargli e disse: «Forse là se ne troveranno quaranta». Rispose: «Non lo farò, per riguardo a quei quaranta». 30 Riprese: «Non si adiri il mio Signore, se parlo ancora: forse là se ne troveranno trenta». Rispose: «Non lo farò, se ve ne troverò trenta». 31 Riprese: «Vedi come ardisco parlare al mio Signore! Forse là se ne troveranno venti». Rispose: «Non la distruggerò per riguardo a quei venti». 32 Riprese: «Non si adiri il mio Signore, se parlo ancora una volta sola; forse là se ne troveranno dieci». Rispose: «Non la distruggerò per riguardo a quei dieci». 33 Poi il Signore, come ebbe finito di parlare con Abramo, se ne andò e Abramo ritornò alla sua abitazione.

18 2 Abraham receiveth three Angels into his house. 10 Isaac is promised again. 12 Sarah laugheth. 18 Christ is promised to all nations. 19 Abraham taught his family to know God. 21 The destruction of Sodom is declared unto Abraham. 23 Abraham prayeth for them.
1 Again the Lord (A)appeared unto him in the [a]plain of Mamre, as he sat in his tent door about the heat of the day.
2 And he lifted up his eyes, and looked: and lo, three [b]men stood by him, and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself to the ground.
3 And he said, [c]Lord, if I have now found favor in thy sight, go not, I pray thee, from thy servant.
4 Let a little water, I pray you, be brought, and [d]wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree.
5 And I will bring a morsel of bread, that you may comfort your hearts, afterward ye shall go your ways: for therefore are ye [e]come to your servant. And they said, Do even as thou hast said.
6 Then Abraham made haste into the tent unto Sarah, and said, Make ready at once three [f]measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth.
7 And Abraham ran to the beasts, and took a tender and good calf, and gave it to the servant, who hasted to make it ready.
8 And he took butter and milk, and the calf which he had prepared, and set before them, and stood himself by them under the tree: and [g]they did eat.
9 ¶ Then they said unto him, Where is Sarah thy wife? And he answered, Behold, she is in the tent.
10 And he said, (B)I will certainly come again unto thee according to the time of [h]life: and lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son: and Sarah heard in the tent door, which was behind him.
11 (Now Abraham and Sarah were old and stricken in age, and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.)
12 Therefore Sarah [i]laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old, (C)and my lord also, shall I have lust?
13 And the Lord said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah thus laugh, saying, Shall I certainly bear a child, which am old?
14 (Shall anything be [j](D)hard to the Lord? as the time appointed will I return unto thee, even according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.)
15 But Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not: for she was afraid. And he said, [k]It is not so: for thou laughedst.
16 ¶ Afterward, the men did rise up from thence, and looked toward Sodom: and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way.
17 And the [l]Lord said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do,
18 Seeing that Abraham shall be indeed a great and a mighty nation, and (E)all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?
19 For I know him [m]that he will command his sons and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord to do righteousness and judgment, that the Lord may bring upon Abraham, that he hath spoken unto him.
20 Then the Lord said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is exceedingly grievous,
21 I will [n]go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to that [o]cry, which is come unto me: and if not, that I may know.
22 And the men turned thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the Lord.
23 Then Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?
24 If there be fifty righteous within the city, wilt thou destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein?
25 Be it far from thee from doing this thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be even as the wicked, be it far from thee. Shall not the Judge of all the world [p]do right?
26 And the Lord answered, If I shall find in Sodom [q]fifty righteous within the city, then will I spare all the place for their sakes.
27 Then Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have begun to speak unto my Lord, and I am [r]but dust and ashes,
28 If there shall lack five of fifty righteous, wilt thou destroy all the city for five? And he said, If I find there five and forty, I will not destroy it.
29 And he yet spake to him again, and said, What if there shall be found forty there? Then he answered, I will not do it for forty’s sake.
30 Again he said, Let not my Lord now be angry that I speak, What if thirty be found there? Then he said, I will not do it, if I find thirty there.
31 Moreover he said, Behold now, I have begun to speak unto my Lord, What if twenty be found there? And he answered, I will not destroy it for twenty’s sake.
32 Then he said, Let not my Lord be now angry, and I will speak but this [s]once, What if ten be found there? And he answered, I will not destroy it for ten’s sake.
33 ¶ And the Lord went his way, when he had left communing with Abraham, and Abraham returned unto his place.

- Genesis 18:32 If God refused not the prayer for the wicked Sodomites, even to the sixth request, how much more will he grant the prayers of the godly for the afflicted Church?
